Search

The list of interesting electrical properties exhibited by transition metal dichalcogenides has grown with the discovery of extremely large magnetoresistance (MR) and type-II Weyl semimetal behaviour in WTe$_2$ and MoTe$_2$. The extremely large MR in WTe$_2$ is still not adequately understood. Here, we systematically study the effect of Mo substitution on the quantum oscillations in the MR in WTe$_2$. The MR decreases with Mo substitution, however, the carrier concentrations extracted from the quantum oscillations show that the charge compensation improves. We believe that earlier interpretations based on the two-band theory, which attribute the decrease in MR to charge imbalance, could be incorrect due to over-parametrization. We attribute the decrease in MR in the presence of charge compensation to a fall in transport mobility, which is evident from the residual resistivity ratio data. We present an experimental investigation of the magnetic ground state in Ba$_4$NbIr$_3$O$_{12}$, a fractional valent trimer iridate. X-ray absorption and photoemission spectroscopy show that the Ir valence lies between 3+ and 4+ while Nb is pentavalent. Combined dc/ac magnetization, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements reveal no magnetic phase transition down to 0.05~K. Despite a significant Weiss temperature ($\Theta_{\mathrm{W}} \sim -15$ to $-25$~K) indicating antiferromagnetic correlations, a quantum spin-liquid (QSL) phase emerges and persists down to 0.1~K. This state likely arises from geometric frustration in the edge-sharing equilateral triangle Ir network. Our $\mu$SR analysis reveals a two-component depolarization, arising from the coexistence of rapidly (90\%) and slowly (10\%) fluctuating Ir moments. Powder x-ray diffraction and Ir-L$_3$edge x-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy identify ~8-10\% Nb/Ir site-exchange, reducing frustration within part of the Ir network, and likely leading to the faster muon spin relaxation, while the structurally ordered Ir ions remain highly geometrically frustrated, giving rise to the rapidly spin-fluctuating QSL ground state. At low temperatures, the magnetic specific heat varies as $\gamma T + \alpha T^2$, indicating gapless spinon excitations, and possible Dirac QSL features with linear spinon dispersion, respectively., Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures

Pyrrhotite, Fe$_7$S$_8$, provides an example of exceptionally strong magnetoelastic coupling through pinning of ferromagnetic domains by ferroelastic twins. Using direct imaging of both magnetic and ferroelastic domains by magnetic force microscopy (MFM), the mechanism by which this coupling controls local magnetic switching behaviour of regions on the pyrrhotite surface is revealed, and leads to quantitative fitting of field dependent MFM phase shifts with bulk magnetometry data. It is shown that characteristic inflection points in the magnetometry data along certain direction, in particular $[\overline 120]^*_h$ of the hexagonal parent structure, are in fact caused by ferroelastic pinning of the magnetic moments.

Frustrated magnets offer a plethora of exotic magnetic ground states, including quantum spin liquids (QSLs), in which enhanced quantum fluctuations prevent a long-range magnetic ordering of the strongly correlated spins down to lowest temperature. Here we have investigated the trimer based mixed valence hexagonal rhodate Ba$_4$NbRh$_3$O$_{12}$ using a combination of dc and ac magnetization, electrical resistivity, specific heat, and muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements. Despite the substantial antiferromagnetic exchange interactions, as evident from the Weiss temperature ($\theta_{\mathrm{W}}\sim -35$ to -45 K), among the Rh-local moments, neither long-range magnetic ordering nor spin-freezing is observed down to at least 50 mK, in ac-susceptibility, specific heat and ZF-$\mu$SR measurements (down to 0.26 K). We ascribe the absence of any magnetic transition to enhanced quantum fluctuations as a result of geometrical frustration arising out of the edge-sharing equilateral Rh-triangular network in the structure. Our longitudinal-field $\mu$SR result evidences persistent spin fluctuations down to 0.26~K, thus stabilizing a dynamic QSL ground state in Ba$_4$NbRh$_3$O$_{12}$. Furthermore, the magnetic specific heat ($C_{\mathrm{m}}$) data at low-$T$ reveal a significant $T$-linear contribution plus a quadratic $T$-dependence. A $T$-linear behavior is evocative of gapless spin excitations, while the $T^2$-term of $C_{\mathrm{m}}$ may indicate the Dirac QSL phenomenology of the spinon excitations with a linear dispersion., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

$\text{GdRu}_{\text{2}}\text{Si}_{\text{2}}$ is a centrosymmetric magnet in which a skyrmion lattice has recently been discovered. Here, we investigate the magnetic structure of the zero field ground state using neutron diffraction on single crystal and polycrystalline $^{\text{160}}\text{GdRu}_{\text{2}}\text{Si}_{\text{2}}$. In addition to observing the principal propagation vectors $\mathbf{q}_{1}$ and $\mathbf{q}_{2}$, we discover higher order magnetic satellites, notably $\mathbf{q}_{1} + 2\mathbf{q}_{2}$. The appearance of these satellites are explained within the framework of a new double-$Q$ constant-moment solution. Using powder diffraction we implement a quantitative refinement of this model. We investigate the superconducting properties of Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ using low-temperature resistivity, magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements. We find that Sc$_{5}$Co$_{4}$Si$_{10}$ {exhibits type-II} superconductivity with a superconducting transition temperature $T_\mathrm{C}= 3.5 (1)$\,K. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density obtained from transverse-field $\mu$SR spectra is best modeled using an isotropic Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer type $s$-wave gap symmetry with $2\Delta/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C} = 2.84(2)$. However, the zero-field muon-spin relaxation asymmetry reveals the appearance of a spontaneous magnetic field below $T_\mathrm{C}$, indicating that time-reversal symmetry (TRS) is broken in the superconducting state. Although this behavior is commonly associated with non-unitary or mixed singlet-triplet pairing, our group-theoretical analysis of the Ginzburg-Landau free energy alongside density functional theory calculations indicates that unconventional mechanisms are pretty unlikely. Therefore, we have hypothesized that TRS breaking may occur via a conventional electron-phonon process., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$ is a transition metal dichalcogenide that has been of significant interest due to its ability to host a magnetic chiral soliton lattice. Conventional and planar Hall measurements provide valuable insight into the detection of exotic spin structures in chiral magnets. We show that the presence of a giant planar Hall effect can be attributed to a tilted soliton lattice in Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_{2}$. Our detailed angular dependent study shows the planar Hall effect and anisotropic magnetoresistance are intrinsically linked in complex non-coplanar magnets. From the conventional Hall signal we show the presence of a giant unconventional, likely topological Hall component, that is the fingerprint of non-coplanar spin textures., Comment: 23 + 3 pages, 5 + 3 figures. Elemental rhenium exhibiting type-II superconductivity has been previously reported to break time-reversal symmetry in the superconducting state. We have investigated an arc-melted sample of rhenium exhibiting type-I superconductivity. Low temperature zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements indicate that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state. Muon diffusion is observed, which is due to quantum mechanical tunneling between interstitial sites. The normal state behavior is characterized by the conduction electrons screening the muons and thermal broadening, and is typical for a metal. Energy asymmetries between muon trapping sites and the superconducting energy gap also characterize the superconducting state behavior., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

We present magnetization and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements of N\'{e}el skyrmion-host GaV$_4$S$_8$ under the application of hydrostatic pressures up to $P=2.29$ GPa. Our results suggest that the magnetic phase diagram is altered with pressure via a reduction in the crossover temperature from the cycloidal (C) to ferromagnetic-like state with increasing $P$, such that, by 2.29 GPa, the C state appears to persist down to the lowest measured temperatures. With the aid of micromagnetic simulations, we propose that the driving mechanism behind this change is a reduction in the magnetic anisotropy of the system, and suggest that this could lead to an increase in stability of the skyrmion lattice., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ is a two-dimensional van der Waals material with a ferromagnetic ground state and a maximum transition temperature $T_{\mathrm{c}}\sim225$ K. However, when Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ is synthesized lower values of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ are often reported. This is attributed to a deficiency in the Fe at the 2c site in the crystal structure. Here we investigate the effect of Fe deficiency and the substitution of Co for Fe on the magnetic properties of this system. We have synthesized both polycrystalline material and single crystals by chemical vapor transport and the flux method, with the largest crystals obtained using the flux method. Cobalt substitution at the Fe site is found to significantly reduce the magnetic transition temperature. Crystals of Fe$_{3}$GeTe$_{2}$ grown by chemical vapor transport with $\sim 8\%$ excess Fe in the starting materials display an optimum Fe content and magnetic transition temperature., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Polycrystalline La$_{7}$Ir$_{3}$ is reported to show superconductivity breaking time-reversal symmetry while also having an isotropic $s$-wave gap. Single crystals of this noncentrosymmetric superconductor are highly desirable to understand the nature of the electron pairing mechanism in this system. Here we report the growth of high-quality single crystals of La$_{7}$Ir$_{3}$ by the Czochralski method. The structural and superconducting properties of these large crystals have been investigated using x-rays, magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity measurements. We observe a clear anisotropy in the lower and upper critical fields for magnetic fields applied parallel and perpendicular to the hexagonal $c$ axis. We also report the presence of a robust electronic critical field, that diverges from the upper critical field derived from heat capacity, which is the hallmark of surface superconductivity., Comment: 20 + 5 pages, 6 + 4 figures, 1 + 1 tables. Skyrmions in confined geometries have been a subject of increasing interest due to the different properties that they exhibit compared to their bulk counterparts. In this study, nanoparticles of skyrmion-hosting $\text{Cu}_{2}\text{OSeO}_{3}$ have been synthesised using a precipitation method followed by thermal treatment. This enables us to produce nanoparticles whose mean size varies from tens of nanometers to a few micrometers by varying the temperature and duration of the thermal decomposition of the precursor. These sizes span the $\sim 63$~nm diameter of skyrmions in $\text{Cu}_{2}\text{OSeO}_{3}$, allowing investigations into how the magnetic state changes when the size of the geometrical confinement is similar to and smaller than the size of an isolated magnetic skyrmion. AC susceptibility measurements performed on nanoparticles with a size distribution from 15 to 250 nm show a change in the magnetic phase diagram compared to bulk $\text{Cu}_{2}\text{OSeO}_{3}$., Comment: 16 pages, 7 figures

We report a systematic study of the $5d$-electron-doped system Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.15$). With increasing $x$, the orthorhombic $b$~axis decreases slightly while accompanying changes in $a$ and $c$ leave the unit cell volume almost unchanged. Inelastic neutron scattering, along with thermal and transport measurements, reveal that for the Kondo semiconductor CeFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, the low-temperature energy gap which is proposed to be a consequence of strong $c \mhyphen f$ hybridization, is suppressed by a small amount of Ir substitution for Fe, and that the system adopts a metallic ground state with an increase in the density of states at the Fermi level. The charge or transport gap collapses (at $x=$~0.04) faster than the spin gap with Ir substitution. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation measurements demonstrate that the system undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic order below a N\'eel temperature, $T_{\mathrm{N}}$, of 3.1(2)~K for $x = 0.15$. The ordered moment is estimated to be smaller than 0.07(1)~$\mu_\mathrm{B}$/Ce although the trivalent state of Ce is confirmed by Ce L$_3$-edge x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. It is suggested that the $c \mhyphen f$ hybridization gap, which plays an important role in the unusually high ordering temperatures observed in Ce$T_2$Al$_{10}$ ($T$ = Ru and Os), may not be necessary for the onset of magnetic order with a low $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ seen here in Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

The magnetic ground state of polycrystalline N\'eel skyrmion hosting material GaV$_4$S$_8$ has been investigated using ac susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction. In the absence of an applied magnetic field GaV$_4$S$_8$ undergoes a transition from a paramagnetic to a cycloidal state below 13~K and then to a ferromagnetic-like state below 6~K. With evidence from ac susceptibility and powder neutron diffraction, we have identified the commensurate magnetic structure at 1.5 K, with ordered magnetic moments of $0.23(2)~\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ on the V1 sites and $0.22(1)~\mu_{\mathrm{B}}$ on the V2 sites. These moments have ferromagnetic-like alignment but with a 39(8)$^{\circ}$ canting of the magnetic moments on the V2 sites away from the V$_4$ cluster. In the incommensurate magnetic phase that exists between 6 and 13 K, we provide a thorough and careful analysis of the cycloidal magnetic structure exhibited by this material using powder neutron diffraction., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Frustration in magnetic systems is fertile ground for complex behaviour, including unconventional ground states with emergent symmetries, topological properties, and exotic excitations. A canonical example is the emergence of magnetic-charge-carrying quasiparticles in spin-ice compounds. Despite extensive work, a reliable experimental indicator of the density of these magnetic monopoles in spin-ice systems is yet to be found. Here, using measurements on single crystals of Ho$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ in combination with dipolar Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the magnetoresistance is highly sensitive to the density of monopoles. Moreover, we find that for the orientations of magnetic field in which the monopole density is enhanced, a strong coupling emerges between the magnetic charges on the holmium sublattice and the antiferromagnetically ordered iridium ions, leading to an ability to manipulate the antiferromagnetic domains via a uniform external field. Our results pave the way to a quantitative experimental measure of monopole density and provide a powerful illustration of the interplay between the various magnetic and electronic degrees of freedom in the frustrated pyrochlore iridates. This interdependence holds promise for potential functional properties arising from the link between magnetic and electric charges, as well as for the control of antiferromagnetic domain walls, a key goal in the design of next-generation spintronic devices., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures

Topological superconductors (SCs) are novel phases of matter with nontrivial bulk topology. They host at their boundaries and vortex cores zero-energy Majorana bound states, potentially useful in fault-tolerant quantum computation. Chiral SCs are particular examples of topological SCs with finite angular momentum Cooper pairs circulating around a unique chiral axis, thus spontaneously breaking time-reversal symmetry (TRS). They are rather scarce and usually feature triplet pairing: best studied examples in bulk materials are UPt3 and Sr2RuO4 proposed to be f-wave and p-wave SCs respectively, although many open questions still remain. Chiral triplet SCs are, however, topologically fragile with the gapless Majorana modes weakly protected against symmetry preserving perturbations in contrast to chiral singlet SCs. Using muon spin relaxation (muSR) measurements, here we report that the weakly correlated pnictide compound LaPt3P has the two key features of a chiral SC: spontaneous magnetic fields inside the superconducting state indicating broken TRS and low temperature linear behaviour in the superfluid density indicating line nodes in the order parameter. Using symmetry analysis, first principles band structure calculation and mean-field theory, we unambiguously establish that the superconducting ground state of LaPt3P is chiral d-wave singlet., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

The superconducting gap structure of a topological crystalline insulator (TCI) candidate ZrRuAs ($T^{\rm on}_{\rm c}$ = 7.9(1) K) with a noncentrosymmetric crystal structure has been investigated using muon spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements in transverse-field (TF) and zero-field (ZF) geometries. We also present the results of magnetization, electrical resistivity and heat capacity measurements on ZrRuAs, which reveal bulk superconductivity below 7.9~K. The temperature dependence of the effective penetration depth obtained from the analysis of the TF-$\mu$SR spectra below $T_{\rm c}$ is well described by an isotropic $s$-wave gap model as also inferred from an analysis of the heat capacity in the superconducting state. ZF $\mu$SR data do not show any significant change in the muon spin relaxation rate above and below the superconducting transition temperature indicating that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of this material., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Time-reversal symmetry breaking (TRSB) with a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) -like superconductivity occurs in a small, but growing number of noncentrosymmetric (NCS) materials, although the mechanism is poorly understood. We present heat capacity, magnetization, resistivity, and muon spin resonance/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements on polycrystalline samples of NCS La$_{7}$Pd$_{3}$. Transverse-field $\mu$SR and heat capacity data show La$_{7}$Pd$_{3}$ is a type-II superconductor with a BCS-like gap structure, while zero-field $\mu$SR results provide evidence of TRSB. We discuss the implications of these results for both the La$_{7}X_{3}$ (where $X=$ Ni, Pd, Rh, Ir) group of superconductors and other CS and NCS superconductors for which TRSB has been observed., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures and 2 tables. Polycrystalline members of the GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_y$ family of materials with small levels of substitution between $0 \leq y \leq 0.5$ and $7.5 \leq y\leq 8$ have been synthesized in order to investigate their magnetic and structural properties. Substitutions to the skyrmion hosting parent compounds GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$, are found to suppress the temperature of the cubic to rhombohedral structural phase transition that occurs in both end compounds and to create a temperature region around the transition where there is a coexistence of these two phases. Similarly, the magnitude of the magnetization and temperature of the magnetic transition are both suppressed in all substituted compounds until a glassy-like magnetic state is realized. There is evidence from the $ac$ susceptibility data that skyrmion lattices with similar dynamics to those in GaV$_4$S$_8$ and GaV$_4$Se$_8$ are present in compounds with very low levels of substitution, $0 < y< 0.2$ and $7.8 < y < 8$, however, these states vanish at higher levels of substitution. The magnetic properties of these substituted materials are affected by the substitution altering exchange pathways and resulting in the creation of increasingly disordered magnetic states., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

We present an investigation of the influence of low-levels of chemical substitution on the magnetic ground state and N{\' e}el skyrmion lattice (SkL) state in GaV$_4$S$_{8-y}$Se$_y$, where $y =0, 0.1, 7.9$, and $8$. Muon-spin spectroscopy ($\mu$SR) measurements on $y=0$ and 0.1 materials reveal the magnetic ground state consists of microscopically coexisting incommensurate cycloidal and ferromagnetic environments, while chemical substitution leads to the growth of localized regions of increased spin density. $\mu$SR measurements of emergent low-frequency skyrmion dynamics show that the SkL exists under low-levels of substitution at both ends of the series. Skyrmionic excitations persist to temperatures below the equilibrium SkL in substituted samples, suggesting the presence of skyrmion precursors over a wide range of temperatures., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We have investigated the bulk and microscopic properties of the rhombohedral intermediate valence superconductor CeIr$_3$ by employing magnetization, heat capacity, and muon spin rotation and relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements. The magnetic susceptibility indicates bulk superconductivity below $T_\mathrm{C} = 3.1$~K. Heat capacity data also reveal a bulk superconducting transition at $T_\mathrm{C} = 3.1$~K with a second weak anomaly near 1.6~K. At $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, the jump in heat capacity $\Delta C$/$\gamma T_{\mathrm{C}} \sim 1.39(1)$, is slightly less than the BCS weak coupling limit of 1.43. Transverse-field $\mu$SR measurements suggest a fully gapped, isotropic, $s$-wave superconductivity with 2$\Delta(0)/k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{C}} = 3.76(3)$, very close to 3.56, the BCS gap value for weak-coupling superconductors. From the temperature variation of magnetic penetration depth, we have also determined the London penetration depth $\lambda_{\mathrm{L}}(0) = 435(2)$~nm, the carriers' effective mass enhancement $m^{*} = 1.69(1)m_{\mathrm{e}}$ and the superconducting carrier density $n_{\mathrm{s}} = 2.5(1)\times 10^{26}$ carriers m$^{-3}$. The fact that LaIr$_3$, with no $4f$-electrons, and CeIr$_3$ with $4f^{n}$ electrons where $n \le 1$-electron (Ce ion in a valence fluctuating state), both exhibit the same $s$-wave gap symmetry indicates that the physics of these two compounds is governed by the Ir-$d$ band near the Fermi-level, which is in agreement with previous band structure calculations., Comment: 8 pages 4 figures

Superconductors usually display either type-I or type-II superconductivity and the coexistence of these two types in the same material, for example at different temperatures is rare in nature. We the employed muon spin rotation (muSR) technique to unveil the superconducting phase diagram of the dodecaboride ZrB12 and obtained clear evidence of both type-I and type-II characteristics. Most importantly, we found a region showing unusual behavior where the usually mutually exclusive muSR signatures of type-I and type-II superconductivity coexist. We reproduced that behavior in theoretical modeling that required taking into account multiple bands and multiple coherence lengths, which suggests that material has one coherence length larger and another smaller than the magnetic field penetration length (the type-1.5 regime). At stronger fields, a footprint of the type-II mixed state showing square flux-line lattice was also obtained using neutron diffraction.

NbRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$ crystallises in a chiral noncentrosymmetric structure and exhibits bulk type-II superconductivity below $7.46(5)$~K. Here we show that the temperature dependence of the upper critical field deviates from the behaviour expected for both Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg and the Ginzburg-Landau models and that $\mu_{0}H_{\mathrm{c2}}\left(0\right)\approx 18$~T exceeds the Pauli paramagnetic limit, $\mu_{0}H_{\mathrm{P}}=13.9$~T. We explore the reasons for this enhancement. Transverse-field muon spectroscopy measurements suggest that the superconducting gap is either $s$-wave or $\left(s+s\right)$-wave, and the pressure dependence of $T_{\mathrm{c}}$ reveals the superconducting gap is primarily $s$-wave in character. The magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(0) = 595(5)$~nm. Heat capacity measurements reveal the presence of a multigap $\left(s+s\right)$-wave superconducting order parameter and moderate electron-phonon coupling., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Appearance of strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is apparent in ternary equiatomic compounds with 5$d$-electrons due to the large atomic radii of transition metals. SOC plays a significant role in the emergence of unconventional superconductivity. Here we examined the superconducting state of HfIrSi using magnetization, specific heat, zero and transverse-field (ZF/TF) muon spin relaxation/rotation ($\mu$SR) measurements. Superconductivity is observed at $T_\mathrm{C}$ = 3.6 K as revealed by specific heat and magnetization measurements. From the TF$-\mu$SR analysis it is clear that superfluid density well described by an isotropic BCS type $s$-wave gap structure. Furthermore, from TF$-\mu$SR data we have also estimated the superconducting carrier density $n_\mathrm{s}$ = 6.6 $\times$10$^{26}$m$^{-3}$, London penetration depth $\lambda_{L}(0)$ = 259.59 nm and effective mass $m^{*}$ = 1.57 $m_{e}$. Our zero-field muon spin relaxation data indicate no clear sign of spontaneous internal field below $T_\mathrm{C}$, which implies that the time-reversal symmetry is preserved in HfIrSi. Theoretical investigation suggests Hf and Ir atoms hybridize strongly along the $c$-axis of the lattice, which is responsible for the strong three-dimensionality of this system which screens the Coulomb interaction. The superconducting ground state of newly reported ZrIrSi is probed by means of $\mu$SR technique along with resistivity measurement. The occurrence of superconductivity at $T_\mathrm{C}$ = 1.7 K is confirmed by resistivity measurement. ZF-$\mu$SR study revealed that below $T_\mathrm{C}$, there is no spontaneous magnetic field in the superconducting state, indicates TRS is preserved in case of ZrIrSi. From TF-$\mu$SR measurement, we have estimated the superfluid density as a function of temperature, which is described by an isotropic $s-$wave model with a superconducting gap $2\Delta(0)/k_\mathrm{B}T_\mathrm{C}$ = 5.1, indicates the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling. {\it Ab-initio} electronic structure calculation indicates that there are four bands passing through the Fermi level, forming four Fermi surface pockets. We find that the low-energy bands are dominated by the $4d$-orbitals of transition metal Zr, with substantially lesser weight from the $5d$-orbitals of the Ir-atoms., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We have studied the superconducting properties of LaIr$_3$ with a rhombohedral structure using magnetization, heat capacity, and muon-spin rotation/relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements. The zero-field cooled and field cooled susceptibility measurements exhibit a superconducting transition below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K. Magnetization measurements indicate bulk type-II superconductivity with upper critical field $\mu_0H_{\mathrm{c2}}(0)$ = 3.84 T. Two successive transitions are observed in heat capacity data, one at $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 2.5 K and a second at 1.2 K below $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ whose origin remain unclear. The heat capacity jump reveals $\Delta C$/$\gamma T_{\mathrm{C}} \sim$ 1.0 which is lower than 1.43 expected for BCS weak coupling limit. Transverse field-$\mu$SR measurements reveal a fully gapped $s-$wave superconductivity with 2$\Delta(0)/k_{\mathrm{B}}T_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 3.31, which is small compared to BCS value 3.56, suggesting weak coupling superconductivity. Moreover the study of the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth estimated using the transverse field-$\mu$SR measurements gives a zero temperature value of the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda_{\mathrm{L}}(0)$ = 386(3) nm, superconducting carrier density $n_{\mathrm{s}}$ = 2.9(1) $\times$10$^{27}$ carriers $m^{-3}$ and the carriers' effective-mass enhancement $m^{*}$ = 1.53(1) $m_{\mathrm{e}}$. Our zero-field-$\mu$SR measurements do not reveal the spontaneous appearance of an internal magnetic field below the transition temperature, which indicates that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state of LaIr$_3$., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Superconductivity in the pseudo-binary pnictides Ru0.55Rh0.45P and Ru0.75Rh0.25As is probed by muon spin relaxation and rotation (muSR) measurements in conjuction with magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and electrical resistivity measurements. Powder x-ray diffraction confirmed the MnP-type orthorhombic structure (space group Pnma) and showed a nearly single phase nature with small impurity phase(s) of about 5% for both the samples. The occurence of bulk superconductivity is confirmed with Tc = 3.7 K for Ru0.55Rh0.45P and T = 1.6 K for Ru0.75Rh0.25As. The superconducting state electronic heat capacity data reveal weak-coupling single-band isotropic s-wave gap BCS superconductivity. Various normal and superconducting state parameters are determined which reveal a weak-coupling electron-phonon driven type-II dirty-limit superconductivity for both the compounds. The upper critical field shows a linear temperature dependence down to the lowest measured temperatures which is quite unusual for a single-band superconductor. We present an investigation into the structural and magnetic properties of Zn-substituted Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$, a system in which the skyrmion lattice (SkL) phase in the magnetic field-temperature phase diagram was previously seen to split as a function of increasing Zn concentration. We find that splitting of the SkL is only observed in polycrystalline samples and reflects the occurrence of several coexisting phases with different Zn content, each distinguished by different magnetic behaviour. We report the first observation of multigap superconductivity in TaRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$. We show TaRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$ is a bulk type-II superconductor with a transition temperature, $T_{\mathrm{c}} = 6.00(5)$ K. We present transverse-field muon spin relaxation data where the superconducting gap can be fit using a two-gap $\left(s+s\right)$-wave model. We also report the zero-field electronic specific heat in the superconducting state that is best described by the same $\left(s+s\right)$ model providing further evidence of multiband behavior in this superconductor. Zero-field muon spin relaxation measurements show time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting state. We demonstrate that TaRh$_{2}$B$_{2}$ has an upper critical field of $15.2(1)$ T, which is significantly higher than previously reported and exceeds the Pauli limit., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. We present magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron diffraction measurements of polycrystalline Nd2Ru2O7 down to 0.4 K. Three anomalies in the magnetic susceptibility measurements at 146, 21 and 1.8 K are associated with an antiferromagnetic ordering of the Ru4+ moments, a weak ferromagnetic signal attributed to a canting of the Ru4+ and Nd3+ moments, and a long-range-ordering of the Nd3+ moments, respectively. The long-range order of the Nd3+ moments was observed in all the measurements, indicating that the ground state of the compound is not a spin glass. The magnetic entropy of Rln2 accumulated up to 5 K, suggests the Nd3+ has a doublet ground state. Lattice distortions accompany the transitions, as revealed by neutron diffraction measurements, and in agreement with earlier synchrotron x-ray studies. The magnetic moment of the Nd3+ ion at 0.4 K is estimated to be 1.54(2){\mu}B and the magnetic structure is all-in all-out as determined by our neutron diffraction measurements., Comment: 21 pages, 6 figures

The search for two dimensional quantum spin liquids, exotic magnetic states with an entangled ground state remaining disordered down to zero temperature, has been a great challenge in frustrated magnetism during the last decades. Recently, fractionalized excitations, called spinons, emerging from these states, have been evidenced in kagome and triangular antiferromagnets. In contrast, quantum ferromagnetic spin liquids in two dimensions, namely quantum kagome ices, have been less investigated, yet their classical counterparts exhibit amazing properties, magnetic monopole crystals as well as magnetic fragmentation. Here we show that, by applying a magnetic field on the pyrochlore oxide Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$, which has been shown to develop three dimensional quantum magnetic fragmentation in zero field, we are able to reduce the dimension of the system and to create a dynamic kagome ice state. We systematically investigate the normal and superconducting properties of non-centrosymmetric Re$_{6}$Zr using magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity measurements. Resistivity measurements indicate Re$_{6}$Zr has poor metallic behavior and is dominated by disorder. Re$_6$Zr undergoes a superconducting transition at $T_{\mathrm{c}} = \left(6.75\pm0.05\right)$ K. Magnetization measurements give a lower critical field, $\mu_{0}H_{\mathrm{c1}} = \left(10.3 \pm 0.1\right)$ mT. The Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg model is used to approximate the upper critical field $\mu_{0}H_{\mathrm{c2}} = \left(11.2 \pm 0.2\right)$ T which is close to the Pauli limiting field of 12.35 T and which could indicate singlet-triplet mixing. However, low-temperature specific-heat data suggest that Re$_{6}$Zr is an isotropic, fully gapped s-wave superconductor with enhanced electron-phonon coupling. Unusual flux pinning resulting in a peak effect is observed in the magnetization data, indicating an unconventional vortex state., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

VSe2 is a transition metal dichaclogenide which has a charge-density wave transition that has been well studied. We report on a low-temperature upturn in the resistivity and, at temperatures below this resistivity minimum, an unusual magnetoresistance which is negative at low fields and positive at higher fields, in single crystals of VSe2. The negative magnetoresistance has a parabolic dependence on the magnetic field and shows little angular dependence. The magnetoresistance at temperatures above the resistivity minimum is always positive. We interpret these results as signatures of the Kondo effect in VSe2. An upturn in the susceptibility indicates the presence of interlayer V ions which can provide the localized magnetic moments required for scattering the conduction electrons in the Kondo effect. The low-temperature behaviour of the heat capacity, including a high value of gamma, along with a deviation from a Curie-Weiss law observed in the low-temperature magnetic susceptibility, are consistent with the presence of magnetic interactions between the paramagnetic interlayer V ions and a Kondo screening of these V moments., Comment: Accepted for publication in Scientific Reports. 13 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables

We present a detailed investigation of the temperature and depth dependence of the magnetic properties of 3D topological Kondo insulator SmB6 , in particular near its surface. We find that local magnetic field fluctuations detected in the bulk are suppressed rapidly with decreasing depths, disappearing almost completely at the surface. We attribute the magnetic excitations to spin excitons in bulk SmB6 , which produce local magnetic fields of about ~1.8 mT fluctuating on a time scale of ~60 ns. We find that the excitonic fluctuations are suppressed when approaching the surface on a length scale of 40-90 nm, accompanied by a small enhancement in static magnetic fields. When an electronic system has strong correlations and a large spin-orbit interaction, it often exhibits a plethora of mutually competing quantum phases. How a particular quantum ground state is selected out of several possibilities is a very interesting question. However, equally fascinating is how such a quantum entangled state breaks up due to perturbation. This important question has relevance in very diverse fields of science from strongly correlated electron physics to quantum information. Here we report that a quantum entangled dimerized state or valence bond crystal (VBC) phase of Li2RuO3 shows nontrivial doping dependence as we perturb the Ru honeycomb lattice by replacing Ru with Li. Through extensive experimental studies, we demonstrate that the VBC phase melts into a valence bond liquid phase of the RVB (resonating valence bond) type. This system offers an interesting playground where one can test and refine our current understanding of the quantum competing phases in a single compound., Comment: Scientific Reports (in press)

Fractionalised excitations that emerge from a many body system have revealed rich physics and concepts, from composite fermions in two-dimensional electron systems, revealed through the fractional quantum Hall effect, to spinons in antiferromagnetic chains and, more recently, fractionalisation of Dirac electrons in graphene and magnetic monopoles in spin ice. Even more surprising is the fragmentation of the degrees of freedom themselves, leading to coexisting and a priori independent ground states. This puzzling phenomenon was recently put forward in the context of spin ice, in which the magnetic moment field can fragment, resulting in a dual ground state consisting of a fluctuating spin liquid, a so-called Coulomb phase, on top of a magnetic monopole crystal. Here we show, by means of neutron scattering measurements, that such fragmentation occurs in the spin ice candidate Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. We observe the spectacular coexistence of an antiferromagnetic order induced by the monopole crystallisation and a fluctuating state with ferromagnetic correlations. Experimentally, this fragmentation manifests itself via the superposition of magnetic Bragg peaks, characteristic of the ordered phase, and a pinch point pattern, characteristic of the Coulomb phase. These results highlight the relevance of the fragmentation concept to describe the physics of systems that are simultaneously ordered and fluctuating., Comment: accepted in Nature Physics

The superconducting ground state of the newly discovered superconductor Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ with a quasi-one-dimensional crystal structure ($T_{\bf c}\sim$ 2.1(1) K) has been investigated using magnetization and muon-spin relaxation or rotation ($\mu$SR), both zero-field (ZF) and transverse-field (TF), measurements. Our ZF $\mu$SR measurements reveal the presence of spin fluctuations below 4 K and the ZF relaxation rate ($\lambda$) shows enhancement below $T_{\bf c}\sim$ 2.1 K, which might indicate that the superconducting state is unconventional. This observation suggests that the electrons are paired via unconventional channels such as spin fluctuations, as proposed on the basis of theoretical models. Our analysis of the TF $\mu$SR results shows that the temperature dependence of the superfluid density is fitted better with a nodal gap structure than an isotropic s-wave model for the superconducting gap. The observation of a nodal gap in Cs$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ is consistent with that observed in the isostructural K$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ compound through TF $\mu$SR measurements. We report an experimental and computational study of magnetic and electronic properties of the layered Ru(V) oxide SrRu2O6 (hexagonal, P-3 1m), which shows antiferromagnetic order with a N\'eel temperature of 563(2) K, among the highest for 4d oxides. Magnetic order occurs both within edge-shared octahedral sheets and between layers and is accompanied by anisotropic thermal expansivity that implies strong magnetoelastic coupling of Ru(V) centers. Electrical transport measurements using focused ion beam induced deposited contacts on a micron-scale crystallite as a function of temperature show p-type semiconductivity. The calculated electronic structure using hybrid density functional theory successfully accounts for the experimentally observed magnetic and electronic structure and Monte Carlo simulations reveals how strong intralayer as well as weaker interlayer interactions are a defining feature of the high temperature magnetic order in the material., Comment: Physical Review B 2015 accepted for publication

We present an experimental study of the pyrochlore coumpound Nd2Zr2O7 by means of neutron scattering and magnetization measurements down to 90 mK. The Nd$^{3+}$ magnetic moments exhibit a strong local $\langle$111$\rangle$ Ising anisotropy together with a dipolar-octupolar nature, different from the standard Kramers-doublet studied so far. We show that, despite the positive Curie-Weiss temperature, \ndzr\ undergoes a transition around 285 mK towards an all-in$-$all-out antiferromagnetic state. We establish the $(H,T)$ phase diagram in the three directions of the applied field and reveal a metamagnetic transition around 0.1 T. The strongly reduced ordered magnetic moment as well as the unexpected shape of the magnetization curves demonstrate that Nd2Zr2O7 , is not a standard Ising antiferromagnet. We propose that the peculiar nature of the Nd doublet combined with competing interactions explain these findings.

We report structural and magnetic properties studies of large high quality single-crystals of the frustrated magnet, Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$. Powder x-ray diffraction analysis confirms that Nd$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ adopts the pyrochlore structure. Room-temperature x-ray diffraction and time-of-flight neutron scattering experiments show that the crystals are stoichiometric in composition with no measurable site disorder. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility shows no magnetic ordering at temperatures down to 0.5 K. Fits to the magnetic susceptibility data using a Curie-Weiss law reveal a ferromagnetic coupling between the Nd moments. Magnetization versus field measurements show a local Ising anisotropy along the <111> axes of the Nd$^{3+}$ ions in the ground state. Specific heat versus temperature measurements in zero applied magnetic field indicate the presence of a thermal anomaly below $T\sim7$ K, but no evidence of magnetic ordering is observed down to 0.5 K. The experimental temperature dependence of the single-crystal bulk dc susceptibility and isothermal magnetization are analyzed using crystal field theory and the crystal field parameters and exchange coupling constants determined., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables. Inelastic neutron scattering (INS) and specific heat measurements have been performed on the intermediate valence compound CeRuSi$_3$, which is isostructural to the noncentrosymmetric pressure-induced superconductors CeRhSi$_3$, CeIrSi$_3$ and CeCoGe$_3$. INS measurements at 7~K reveal a broad peak at (58.5~$\pm$~1.4)~meV, while at 300~K, broad quasielastic scattering is observed. This indicates a large Kondo temperature of $T_{\rm K}~\sim~680$~K. The magnetic contribution to the specific heat ($C_{\rm mag}$) has a value of $\gamma~=~62.5(1)$~mJ/mol~K$^2$ at low temperatures and above about 100~K can be well accounted for by the Coqlbin-Schrieffer model with a characteristic temperature of $T_0$~=~680~K, which is further evidence that CeRuSi$_3$ is in the intermediate valence regime., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures. The crystal structures of Ni$X_2$(pyz)$_2$ ($X$ = Cl (\textbf{1}), Br (\textbf{2}), I (\textbf{3}) and NCS (\textbf{4})) were determined at 298~K by synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. All four compounds consist of two-dimensional (2D) square arrays self-assembled from octahedral NiN$_4$$X_2$ units that are bridged by pyz ligands. The 2D layered motifs displayed by \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} are relevant to bifluoride-bridged [Ni(HF$_2$)(pyz)$_2$]$Z$F$_6$ ($Z$ = P, Sb) which also possess the same 2D layers. In contrast, terminal $X$ ligands occupy axial positions in \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} and cause a staggering of adjacent layers. Long-range antiferromagnetic order occurs below 1.5 (Cl), 1.9 (Br and NCS) and 2.5~K (I) as determined by heat capacity and muon-spin relaxation. The single-ion anisotropy and $g$ factor of \textbf{2}, \textbf{3} and \textbf{4} are measured by electron spin resonance where no zero--field splitting was found. The magnetism of \textbf{1}-\textbf{4} crosses a spectrum from quasi-two-dimensional to three-dimensional antiferromagnetism. An excellent agreement was found between the pulsed-field magnetization, magnetic susceptibility and $T_\textrm{N}$ of \textbf{2} and \textbf{4}. Magnetization curves for \textbf{2} and \textbf{4} calculated by quantum Monte Carlo simulation also show excellent agreement with the pulsed-field data. \textbf{3} is characterized as a three-dimensional antiferromagnet with the interlayer interaction ($J_\perp$) slightly stronger than the interaction within the two-dimensional [Ni(pyz)$_2$]$^{2+}$ square planes ($J_\textrm{pyz}$)., Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures

A study of the magnetic properties of the frustrated rare earth oxide SrGd2O4 has been completed using bulk property measurements of magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat on single crystal samples. Two zero-field phase transitions have been identified at 2.73 and 0.48 K. For the field, H, applied along the a and b axes, a single boundary is identified that delineates the transition from a low field, low temperature magnetically ordered regime to a high field, high temperature paramagnetic phase. Several field-induced transitions, however, have been observed with H || c. The measurements have been used to map out the magnetic phase diagram of SrGd2O4, suggesting that it is a complex system with several competing magnetic interactions. The low-temperature magnetic behavior of SrGd2O4 is very different compared to the other SrLn2O4 (Ln = Lanthanide) compounds, even though all of the SrLn2O4 compounds are isostructural, with the magnetic ions forming a low-dimensional lattice of zigzag chains that run along the c axis. The differences are likely to be due to the fact that in the ground state Gd3+ has zero orbital angular momentum and therefore the spin-orbit interactions, which are crucial for other SrLn2O4 compounds, can largely be neglected. Instead, given the relatively short Gd3+-Gd3+ distances in SrGd2O4, dipolar interactions must be taken into account for this antiferromagnet alongside the Heisenberg exchange terms., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

The superconducting properties of Sn1-xInxTe (x = 0.38 to 0.45) have been studied using magnetization and muon-spin rotation or relaxation (muSR) measurements. These measurements show that the superconducting critical temperature Tc of Sn1-xInxTe increases with increasing x, reaching a maximum at around 4.8 K for x = 0.45. Zero-field muSR results indicate that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in this material. Transverse-field muon-spin rotation has been used to study the temperature dependence of the magnetic penetration depth lambda(T) in the mixed state. For all the compositions studied, lambda(T) can be well described using a single-gap s-wave BCS model. The magnetic penetration depth at zero temperature lambda(0) ranges from 500 to 580 nm. Both the superconducting gap Delta(0) at 0 K and the gap ratio Delta(0)/kBTc indicate that Sn1-xInxTe (x = 0.38 to 0.45) should be considered as a superconductor with intermediate to strong coupling., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables
