An important question for parents and educators alike is how to promote adolescents' academic identity and school performance. This study investigated relations among parental education, parents' attitudes toward their adolescents' school, parental support for learning at home, and adolescents' academic identity and school performance over time and in different national contexts. Longitudinal data were collected from adolescents and their parents in nine countries (China, Colombia, Italy, Jordan, Kenya, the Philippines, Sweden, Thailand, and the United States). When adolescents were 16 years old, their mothers (N = 1083) and fathers (N = 859) provided data. When adolescents were 17 years old, 1049 adolescents (50% girls) and their mothers (N = 1001) and fathers (N = 749) provided data. Multiple-group path analyses indicated that, across cultures, higher parent education was associated with better adolescent school performance. Parents' attitudes toward their adolescents' school and parent support for learning in the home were not associated with adolescents' school performance but were associated with academic identity. The findings suggest somewhat different pathways to school performance versus academic identity. Implications for helping parents and educators in different countries promote adolescents' academic identity and achievement are discussed.

Plastic mulch is widely used in agriculture, providing significant benefits. However, improper use can harm farmland ecosystems and threaten food security, especially in black soil regions, which are primary grain-producing areas. Timely and accurate monitoring of spatial and temporal changes in plastic-mulched farmland (PMF) is crucial for controlling mulch pollution and promoting sustainable development. However, dynamic changes of PMF, diversity of background environment, and cloud cover seriously hinder the long-term and large-scale monitoring of PMF. Therefore, this article proposed a new process for monitoring PMF based on Google Earth Engine and multitemporal random forest probability synthesis (MRFPS) algorithms. Taking three typical black soil mulched areas, the random forest performance was compared in five feature scenarios by combining spectral bands, spectral indices, and texture information. The key features and combinations were optimized, and then the MRFPS algorithm was used to minimize the impact of cloud contamination and map the distribution of PMF. The results showed that the sowing period and vigorous growth period were the key periods for PMF identification; the red edge bands, BSI, retrogressive plastic greenhouse index, plastic-mulched citrus index, NDBBI, and EVI were the important features for PMF identification while the texture information had less influence. The classification results had high accuracy with an OA of more than 90%, outperforming other methods. Analysis of the spatial distribution from 2017 to 2023 revealed a continued shrinkage in PMF area, with regional differences in the frequency of PMF, which may be closely related to farming practices and government policies. This study provides essential support for exploring PMF distribution change patterns.

Abstract Phosphorus (P) is essential for basic natural processes and can limit the productivity of entire ecosystems. However, agricultural lands worldwide currently suffer from P deficiency. The application of P fertilizers is not only poorly utilized, but also results in the gradual accumulation of P. Biochar, a substance produced by the pyrolysis of biomass under low oxygen levels, is frequently used as a soil amendment. It provides P in a form that is readily available for plant uptake, and thus addresses both short- and long-term soil P deficiencies. In this paper, we systematically reviewed relevant studies on “biochar and soil” or “biochar and soil P” published in the past decade (2013–2023). A synthesis of the reported results revealed that analyzing the effect of biochar on soil P through changes in soil physicochemical properties and microbial communities has gradually emerged as a prominent area of research in recent years. The purpose of this study was to analyze the differential effects of biochar addition on soil P availability, including the clarification of the underlying mechanisms. The results showed that although biochar application generally exerts a positive effect on soil P availability, there are differences in the extent of effects based on application conditions. Shifting to mechanisms, biochar application not only directly increases the available phosphorus (AP) content of soil, but also indirectly influences soil P availability via changes in soil physical, chemical, and biological properties. To summarize, biochar application can affect soil P availability to different degrees through direct or indirect pathways. Graphical Abstract

Background Given the increasing prevalence of the high incidence of bone and joint diseases in the elderly population, and significantly associated with higher mortality, more disability, decline in functional status and lower quality of life, this creates a large disease burden. There is currently no research on the prevalence and influencing factors of this disease in Henan Province. Objective To provide scientific basis for understanding the epidemic characteristics and influencing factors of bone and joint diseases in the elderly population in Henan Province and implementing precise prevention and control. Methods The multi-stage random cluster sampling method was used to obtain the demographic characteristics, past disease history, physical activity and physical indicators of permanent residents aged≥18 years old in Henan Province in 2018 through questionnaires, medical physical examination, laboratory testing and other methods. 1 055 people aged ≥60 years old were included in this study. Multivariate Logistic regression was used to analyze the characteristics and influencing factors of bone and joint diseases in the elderly population with different characteristics in Henan Province. Results The incidence rate of bone and joint diseases among the elderly population in Henan Province in 2018 was 28.13% (95%CI=28.10%-28.15%). Among them, women, urban areas, those with overweight or obesity, central obesity, dyslipidemia or hyperlipidemia, snoring history, moderate intensity activity, and non-smoking history have higher incidence rates, and the differences are statistically significant (P

Abstract TNBC, the most aggressive form of breast cancer, lacks accurate and effective therapeutic targets. Immunotherapy presents a promising approach for addressing TNBC. Anxiety and depression are frequently concurrent symptoms in TNBC patients. MDD affects the tumor immune microenvironment of TNBC, with its characteristic genes affecting the pathophysiology of MDD and potentially increasing the risk of TNBC recurrence and metastasis. This study reveals significant differences in T lymphocyte infiltration between high-risk and low-risk TNBC groups based on MDD feature genes. This finding aids in identifying TNBC patients who may benefit from immunotherapy, providing new insights for future TNBC immunotherapy strategies. Our aim is to identify MDD-related genes involved in the pathogenesis of TNBC and to provide predictive biomarkers for TNBC immunotherapy.

To solve the problem of low cementitious activity of steel slag (SS), N, N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid sodium salt (BES-Na) and triethanolamine (TEA) were used in this study to improve the hydration activity of SS. However, there are no comparative studies on the effects of BES-Na and TEA on the hydration of SS-Portland cement (PC) systems. This study compared the hydration process and strength development of SS-PC systems in the presence of BES-Na and TEA, as well as the complexing ability of BES-Na and TEA. The results showed that both BES-Na and TEA improved the early compressive strength of SS-PC mortar, but TEA did not contribute to the late compressive strength, while BES-Na still improved the late compressive strength. At the same dosage, TEA accelerated aluminates hydration more than BES-Na and retarded/inhibited silicates hydration more than BES-Na. This difference in effect on hydration can be attributed to the difference in their complexing ability. TEA has a stronger complexing ability with metal ions than BES-Na, which is beneficial for accelerating aluminates hydration, but this not only prolonged the hydration induction period but also inhibited silicates hydration. BES-Na has a weaker complexing ability relative to TEA. Although BES-Na has a weaker accelerating effect on aluminates hydration, it has a lesser effect on silicates hydration and even accelerates silicates hydration at low dosage. This study also showed that BES-Na is an alternative additive to TEA, which could help expand the application of BES-Na in cementitious materials.

Objective: To investigate the substantial changes in cell types, pathways, and cell-cell interactions occurring in the irradiation-induced alopecia and dermatitis (IRIAD) mouse model and to identify potential targets for patients experiencing skin adverse reactions to radiotherapy. Methods: Mice were irradiated at 15 ​Gy, targeting the head and neck region. After a 14-day interval, living cells were extracted from both wild-type (WT) mice and irradiated mice for single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq). The scRNA-seq data, retrieved from the GEO database (GSE201447), underwent stringent quality control using the Seurat (v4.3.0) R package. Cell type annotation relied on previously reported typical markers and CellMarker 2.0. Differentially expressed genes were calculated to perform gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses. Cell-cell interactions were evaluated using the Cellchat R package. Results: The application of single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) enabled a comprehensive characterization of the intricate cellular composition of both wild-type (WT) and irradiated mice skin. Remarkably, cells within irradiated mice skin exhibited a significant alteration in the intensity of cell-cell interactions compared to their wild-type counterparts. This change in interaction intensity was observed across various cell types, including fibroblast cells, endothelial cells, and dendritic cells. Importantly, these ''interacting cells'' shared common signaling pathways, notably the upregulation of the IL-17 pathway following irradiation. Conclusions: The modification of intercellular communication induced by irradiation primarily involves fibroblast cells, endothelial cells, and various types of immune cells. This investigation provides a novel perspective on potential targets and holds promise for enhancing the clinical management of IRIAD.

Current-voltage measurement (I–V curve) is a typical method to identify the critical current (Ic) of second-generation high-temperature superconducting tapes (2G HTS tapes). However, it is difficult to characterize the local Ic of 2G HTS tape on the millimeter (mm) scale due to the set spacing of the voltage electrodes (several centimeters), so non-contact trapped field distribution measurements have been used to define local defects in Y–Ba–Cu–O bulks and 2G HTS tapes, especially for the quality analysis for long lengths of 2G HTS tapes. In order to discuss the possible degradation of 2G HTS tape during heating and bending (both important parameters in joining process), this study used both trapped field measurement and I–V measurement to characterize the effect of heating (190 °C–230 °C) and bending (radius = 3.75 mm–22.35 mm) processes on the degradation of 2G HTS tape Ic. In addition, according to electromagnetic calculations, the local Ic (within a few millimeters) of the 2G HTS tape can be obtained from the flux density and distribution of the trapped magnetic field. Comparing the two sets of Ic measurements showed very good agreement. This study demonstrates the accuracy of optimized heating and bending parameters as well as spatial position and local Ic values of processed 2G HTS tape through non-contact trapped field measurements.

[Objective] A solid beverage with antialcoholic function was developed by the raw materials of tangerine peel, hawthorn and Pueraria lobata, which had the same origin as food and medicine, and explore its protective effect on mice with acute alcoholic liver injury. [Methods] The dry paste rate and total flavone content were used as the indexes，the extraction process was selected by orthogonal test. The single factor method was used to optimize the forming process with the indexes of sensory evaluation, shaping rate and solubility. A mouse model of acute alcoholic liver injury was established by administering 52% alcohol. The liver index, aspartate aminotransferase （AST） and serum alanine aminotransferase （ALT） in serum, as well as total cholesterol （TC）, triglyceride （TG）, superoxide dismutase （SOD）, malondialdehyde （MDA）, glutathione （GSH）, the inflammatory factor IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α in liver tissue were measured. The pathological changes of the liver were observed by hematoxylin-eosin （HE） staining. [Results] The optimal preparation process of tangerine peel composite solid beverage: three herbs were soaked for 30 minutes and extracted twice. The first solid-liquid ratio was 1∶12 （g/mL） and the extraction time was 2.0 h, and the second solid-liquid ratio was 1∶10 （g/mL） and the extraction time was 1.5 h. And then combined the two extracts. After concentration, drying and crushing, dry paste powder was obtained, mixed with maltodextrin in a 1∶1 ratio, added 1.0% mogroside, and used 90% ethanol as wetting agent for wet granulation. The results of animal experiments show that: compared with model group, the levels of AST, ALT, TG, TC, MDA, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α were reduced （P＜0.01, P＜0.05） by the pretreatments with tangerine peel composite solid beverage, and the levels of GSH, SOD were increased （P＜0.01）. The histopathological sections of the liver showed significant improvement in the degree of hepatic injury in the administered mice. [Conclusion] tangerine peel composite solid beverage has uniform color, good solubility, moderate sweetness and delicate taste, and has good protective effect on acute alcoholic liver injury.

Ovarian cancer is a highly heterogeneous tumor with a poor prognosis. The lack of reliable and efficient research models that can accurately mimic heterogeneity has impeded in-depth investigations and hindered the clinical translation of research findings in ovarian cancer. Organoid models have emerged as a promising in vitro approach, demonstrating remarkable fidelity to the histological, molecular, genomic, and transcriptomic features of their tissues of origin. In recent years, organoids have contributed to advancing our understanding of ovarian cancer initiation, metastasis, and drug resistance mechanisms, as well as facilitating clinical screening of effective therapeutic agents. The establishment of high-throughput organoid culture systems, coupled with cutting-edge technologies such as organ-on-a-chip, genetic engineering, and 3D printing, has tremendous potential for accelerating ovarian cancer research translation. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of the latest exploration of organoids in basic ovarian cancer research and clinical translation. Furthermore, we discuss the prospects and challenges associated with the use of organoids and related novel technologies in the context of ovarian cancer. This review provides insights into the application of organoids in ovarian cancer.

Objective: Chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG) is a complex and burdensome disease. However, side effects and compliance issues cannot be ignored due to the long treatment cycle. Numerous studies have confirmed the effectiveness of rutaecarpine (RUT) for treating digestive dysfunction. However, the potential mechanism of action of RUT in the context of CAG treatment remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the therapeutic effects and mechanisms of RUT in 1-methyl-3-nitro-1-nitrosoguanidine-induced CAG using network pharmacology, metabolomics, and traditional pharmacological approaches. Materials and Methods: Pathological tests and ELISA assays were used to observe the therapeutic effects of RUT treatment on CAG. Differential metabolites were identified using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, and metabolism-related target genes were enriched. The same target genes were identified between RUT and CAG diseases. The intersectional target genes were uploaded to Cytoscape for enrichment, and the nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain (NOD)-like receptor signaling pathway was selected to validate the mechanisms of the study. Finally, cell pyroptosis status was evaluated using the terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick end labeling assay, and the expressions of associated proteins of the NOD-like receptor signaling pathway were assessed by Western blotting and immunohistochemistry. Results: RUT alleviated gastric mucosal damage and significantly downregulated indicators associated with inflammation and gastric atrophy. A total of 29 intersection target genes was identified, and core pathways were obtained. The NOD-like receptor signaling pathway and pyroptosis status were selected to validate the mechanisms of RUT treatment in CAG rats. The expression of NOD-related proteins and downstream factors was downregulated in the RUT group. Conclusions: RUT exerts a pharmacological effect on relieving gastric damage in CAG rats by inhibiting NOD-like receptors and inflammasomes.

A light-front holographic model is used to illustrate an algebraic scheme for constructing a representation of a hadron's zero-skewness generalised parton distribution (GPD) from its valence-quark distribution function (DF) and electromagnetic form factor, FH, without reference to deeply virtual Compton scattering data. The hadron's mass distribution gravitational form factor, AH, calculated from this GPD is harder than FH; and, for each hadron, the associated mass-density profile is more compact than the analogous charge profile, with each pion near-core density being larger than that of its proton partner. These features are independent of the scheme employed.

Ischemic heart failure rates rise despite decreased acute myocardial infarction (MI) mortality. Excessive myofibroblast activation post-MI leads to adverse remodeling. LIM kinases (LIMK1 and LIMK2) regulate cytoskeleton homeostasis and are pro-fibrotic markers in atrial fibrillation. However, their roles and mechanisms in postinfarction fibrosis and ventricular remodeling remain unclear. This study found that the expression of LIMKs elevated in the border zone (BZ) in mice MI models. LIMK1/2 double knockout (DKO) restrained pathological remodeling and reduced mortality by suppressing myofibroblast activation. By using adeno-associated virus (AAV) with a periostin promoter to overexpress LIMK1 or LIMK2, this study found that myofibroblast-specific LIMK2 overexpression diminished these effects in DKO mice, while LIMK1 did not. LIMK2 kinase activity was critical for myofibroblast proliferation by using AAV overexpressing mutant LIMK2 lack of kinase activity. According to phosphoproteome analysis, functional rescue experiments, co-immunoprecipitation, and protein-protein docking, LIMK2 led to the phosphorylation of β-catenin at Ser 552. LIMK2 nuclear translocation also played a role in myofibroblast proliferation after MI with the help of AAV overexpressing mutant LIMK2 without nuclear location signal. Chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing identified that LIMK2 bound to Lrp6 promoter region in TGF-β treated cardiac fibroblasts, positively regulating Wnt signaling via Wnt receptor internalization. This study demonstrated that LIMK2 promoted myofibroblast proliferation and adverse cardiac remodeling after MI, by enhancing phospho-β-catenin (Ser552) and Lrp6 signaling. This suggested that LIMK2 could be a target for the treatment of postinfarction injury.

IntroductionProsocial behavior (i.e., voluntary actions aimed at benefiting others, such as helping, comforting, and sharing) has proven beneficial for individuals' adjustment during the transition to adolescence. However, less is known about the role of the broader sociocultural context in shaping prosocial development across different cultures. Thus, the present study explored the longitudinal trajectory of prosocial behavior in the transition to adolescence (from ages 9 to 16) by examining the role of the Human Development Index (HDI) in relation to prosocial development.MethodsA sample of 915 children (Time 1: 50.5% males; Mage = 9.24, SD = 0.69) across six countries (Colombia, Jordan, Italy, the Philippines, Thailand, and the United States) participated in the study. Over four time points covering 7 years, prosocial behavior was assessed using a self-report measure.ResultsA second-order Latent Growth Curve Model, controlling for child gender and family SES, showed that prosocial behavior remained stable in contexts with high HDI, whereas increases in prosocial behavior were evidenced as children moved into adolescence in contexts with low HDI. Moreover, cultural differences in the mean level of prosocial behavior were shown during late childhood and the earliest phase of adolescence, whereas the national development of a given context did not account for differences in prosocial behavior during late adolescence.DiscussionFindings underscore that national life expectancy, education, and wealth play a role in age-related changes in other-oriented behaviors during adolescence. The role of sociocultural factors in shaping trajectories of prosocial behavior across six countries is discussed.

Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, authorities worldwide imposed coercive regulations aimed at curbing the virus’s spread, often at the expense of individuals who were considered potential threats to public health. We argue that individual differences in their support for such actions can be understood from the perspective of an evolved “behavioral immune system”. We conducted two studies within the context of the “zero-COVID” policy in Mainland China. Study 1 recruited 819 Shanghai residents during a strict citywide lockdown and found that individuals’ collectivistic orientation and personal control over their lives predicted their tolerance of injustices involved in disease-control measures. Moreover, the effect of psychological collectivism was enhanced by personal control. Study 2 (N = 403) partly replicated these findings using hypothetical scenarios related to various fictitious viruses. Notably, the effects found in Study 1 only manifested in scenarios involving ambivalent pathogens, which are seldom fatal but highly contagious. Building on the functional flexibility principle of the behavioral immune system theory, we discussed the unique role of ambivalent pathogen signals in generating within-society variability and fine-tuning behavioral immune responses.

Tumor stands as one of the principal contributors to global mortality. As research into tumor treatments advances, tumor inhibitors emerge as pivotal milestones in tumor therapy. Among these inhibitors, Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK), a receptor tyrosine kinase, is critical owing to its close association with tumor cell proliferation and growth, which renders it a critical therapeutic target. This work systematically explores the relationship between the chemical structures of 36 piperidine carboxamide derivatives and their efficacy in inhibiting Karpas-299 tumor cell activity by employing a rigorous 3D-QSAR modeling approach. A robust Topomer CoMFA model was generated and was meticulously validated through ANN neural network analysis (q2 = 0.597, r2 = 0.939, F = 84.401, N = 4, SEE = 0.268). Based on the model, 60 new compounds with desirable inhibitory activities were successfully designed. Combined with Lipinski’s rule and ADMET criteria alongside molecular docking and dynamics simulations, a lead compound with high inhibitory activity and good drug-likeness was selected. Further computational analyses, encompassing free energy landscape and binding free energy calculations, provided compelling evidence of the stable binding conformation of the lead compound and the superior affinity with the target protein at the active site, underscoring its potential therapeutic utility. In summary, this investigation offers valuable insights and methodological guidance for advancing tumor therapy and underscores the promise of piperidine carboxamide derivatives as prospective ALK inhibitors.

Background: Genetic studies of ovarian cancer (OC) have historically focused on BRCA1/2 mutations, lacking other studies of homologous recombination repair (HRR). Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase inhibitors (PARPi) exploit synthetic lethality to significantly improve OC treatment outcomes, especially in BRCA1/2 deficiency patients. Objectives: Our study aims to construct a mutation map of HRR genes in OC and identify factors influencing the efficacy of PARPi. Design: A retrospective observational analysis of HRR gene variation data from 695 OC patients from March 2019 to February 2022 was performed. Methods: The HRR gene variation data of 695 OC patients who underwent next-generation sequencing (NGS) in the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University were retrospectively collected. Clinical data on the use of PARPi in these patients were also gathered to identify factors that may interfere with the efficacy of PARPi. Results: Out of 127 pathogenic variants in the BRCA1/2 genes, 104 (81.9%) were BRCA1 mutations, and 23 (18.1%) were BRCA2 mutations. Among the 59 variants of uncertain significance (VUS), 20 (33.9%) were BRCA1, while 39 (66.1%) were BRCA2 mutations. In addition to BRCA1/2, HRR gene results showed that 9 (69%) of 13 were HRR pathway pathogenic variants; and 16 (1.7%) of 116 VUS were Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved mutated HRR genes. Notably, the treatment regimen significantly influenced the effectiveness of PARPi, especially when using first-line maintenance therapy, leading to enhanced progression-free survival (PFS) compared to alternative protocols. Conclusion: Focusing on HRR gene mutations and supporting clinical research about PARPi in OC patients is crucial for developing precision treatment strategies and enhancing prognosis.

Abstract Background Lip infantile hemangiomas tend to show less volumetric regression and are more susceptible to visible sequelae in the involuted stage. Some of them still require surgical management after propranolol therapy. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of the Stepwise, Multi-Incisional, and Single-Stage (SMISS) approach applied to lip reduction for those with involuted lip hemangiomas. Methods A retrospective review was performed to evaluate patients with lip hemangioma who received previous propranolol treatment and underwent the aforementioned procedure. Demographic characteristics, lesion morphology, and medical history were reviewed. The Visual Analog Scale was applied to assess the postoperative appearance. Complications within 12 months postoperatively were recorded. Results A total of 18 patients with lip hemangioma were eligible. All patients received oral propranolol therapy before surgery, with treatment duration ranging from 6.0 to 23.0 months. Their age at surgery ranged from 2.5 to 9.0 years. The median Visual Analog Scale scores were 8.0, ranging from 4.0 to 10.0. No severe complications were reported. Conclusions This modified technique based on the SMISS approach has proven reliable and effective in improving the aesthetic outcome for involuted lip infantile hemangiomas. Practical surgical techniques still play an important part in the propranolol era.

Mulching practices have demonstrated the potential to increase crop yields and resource utilization efficiency. However, the response of different crops with various growth stages to different mulching practices remains unclear, particularly in the rainfed agroecosystem. Therefore, a two-year field experiment (2013–2015) of different crops (wheat, maize, and potato) was conducted to evaluate the effects of three different mulching treatments: straw strip mulching (SM), plastic film mulching (PM), and conventional planting without mulching as the control (CK), on soil moisture and temperature, evapotranspiration (ET), water use efficiency (WUE), crop yield and economic benefits on the Loess Plateau. The results indicated that both mulching practices significantly increased the soil water content (SM: 4.3% and PM: 3.6%) compared to CK. However, the effects on soil temperature varied between mulching practices, PM increased soil temperature by 4.9% compared to CK, while SM decreased it by 6.3%. The improved soil hydrothermal conditions, characterized by favorable temperatures and higher soil water status would lead to a higher crop daily growth rate (5.3–49.8%), as well as greater dry matter accumulation (4.7–36.7%). Furthermore, mulching practice (SM and PM) has a significant influence on crop yield and its components of various crops, as well as WUE. The mean grain yield of SM and PM was, respectively, increased by 11.4% and 27.1% for winter wheat, compared to CK, 1.8% and 24.3% for spring maize, and 23.0% and 13.9% for potato, respectively. Compared to CK, PM yielded a higher net economic benefit and WUE for winter wheat and spring maize, while SM presented the best economic benefit and WUE for potato. In conclusion, a comprehensive analysis of crop yield, economic benefits, and resource utilization efficiency suggests that straw strip mulching for potato is a more sustainable environmentally friendly mulching practice, recommended for rainfed farming systems on the Loess Plateau and areas with similar climatic conditions.

Identifying an integrative framework that could appropriately delineate underlying mechanisms and individual risk/protective factors for human health has remained elusive. Evolutionary mismatch theory provides a comprehensive, integrative model for understanding the underlying causes and mechanisms of a wide range of modern health and well-being problems, ranging from obesity to depression. Despite growing interest regarding its importance though, no psychometrically-sound measure of evolutionary mismatch yet exists to facilitate research and intervention. To construct such a scale, aimed at gauging individual differences in the extent to which people's modern lifestyles are mismatched with ancestral conditions, we conducted four studies (a pilot study, followed by 3 main studies, with a final sample of 1901 participants across the main studies). Results from exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses have produced a 36-item evolutionary mismatched lifestyle scale (EMLS) with 7 subdomains of mismatched behaviours (e.g., diet, physical activity, relationships, social media use) that is psychometrically sound. Further, the EMLS is associated with physical, mental and subjective health. We explore the potential of the EMLS as a tool for examining interpersonal and cultural variations in health and wellbeing, while also discussing the limitations of the scale and future directions in relation to further psychometric examinations.

Abstract Embryonic stem cells (ESCs) exhibit unique attributes of boundless self-renewal and pluripotency, making them invaluable for fundamental investigations and clinical endeavors. Previous examinations of microgravity effects on ESC self-renewal and differentiation have predominantly maintained a descriptive nature, constrained by limited experimental opportunities and techniques. In this investigation, we present compelling evidence derived from murine and human ESCs, demonstrating that simulated microgravity (SMG)-induced stress significantly impacts self-renewal and pluripotency through a previously unidentified conserved mechanism. Specifically, SMG induces the upregulation of heat shock protein genes, subsequently enhancing the expression of core pluripotency factors and activating the Wnt and/or LIF/STAT3 signaling pathways, thereby fostering ESC self-renewal. Notably, heightened Wnt pathway activity, facilitated by Tbx3 upregulation, prompts mesoendodermal differentiation in both murine and human ESCs under SMG conditions. Recognizing potential disparities between terrestrial SMG simulations and authentic microgravity, forthcoming space flight experiments are imperative to validate the impact of reduced gravity on ESC self-renewal and differentiation mechanisms.

Abstract Background Our previous studies demonstrated that 1-Pyrroline-5-carboxylate (P5C) released by prostate cancer cells inhibits T cell proliferation and function by increasing SHP1 expression. We designed this study to further explore the influence of P5C on T cell metabolism, and produced an antibody for targeting P5C to restore the functions of T cells. Method We co-immunoprecipated SHP1 from T cells and analyzed the proteins that were bound to it using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC/MS-MS). The influence of P5C on T cells metabolism was also detected by LC/MS-MS. Seahorse XF96 analyzer was further used to identify the effect of P5C on T cells glycolysis. We subsequently designed and produced an antibody for targeting P5C by monoclonal technique and verified its effectiveness to restore the function of T cells in vitro and in vivo. Result PKM2 and LDHB bind SHP1 in T cells, and P5C could increase the levels of p-PKM2 while having no effect on the levels of PKM2 and LDHB. We further found that P5C influences T cell energy metabolism and carbohydrate metabolism. P5C also inhibits the activity of PKM2 and decreases the content of intracellular lactic acid while increasing the activity of LDH. Using seahorse XF96 analyzer, we confirmed that P5C remarkably inhibits glycolysis in T cells. We produced an antibody for targeting P5C by monoclonal technique and verified that the antibody could oppose the influence of P5C to restore the process of glycolysis and function in T cells. Meanwhile, the antibody also inhibits the growth of prostate tumors in an animal model. Conclusion Our study revealed that P5C inhibits the process of glycolysis in T cells by targeting SHP1/PKM2/LDHB complexes. Moreover, it is important that the antibody for targeting P5C could restore the function of T cells and inhibit the growth of prostate tumors.

Abstract Background In some patients with nonischemic cardiomyopathy (NICM), left ventricular (LV) function improves with medical assistance, resulting in left ventricular reverse remodeling (LVRR). However, predictors of LVRR are not fully understood. The left atrium (LA) has been reported as a prognostic predictor in patients with heart failure (HF). The present study aimed to evaluate clinical predictors of LVRR related to LA function on cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR). Methods A total of 103 patients with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were enrolled in this retrospective study between September 2015 and July 2021. CMR parameters, including strain data, were measured in all patients. Echocardiographic data obtained approximately 2 years after enrollment were analyzed to assess LVRR. Results LVRR occurred in 46 patients (44.7%) during follow-up. The value of LA conduit strain was higher in the LVRR group than in the non-LVRR group (6.6 [interquartile range (IQR): 5.6–9.3]% versus 5.0 [IQR: 3.0-6.2]%; p 6.2% compared to those with ⩽6.2%. (log-rank test, p = 0.019). Conclusions LA conduit strain derived from CMR is an independent predictor of LVRR in patients with NICM.

The long-term heating (>60 min) of second generation high temperature superconductor (2G HTS) tape-joints at temperatures above 200 °C leads to the continuous deterioration of their superconducting properties. Previously, we proposed a resistive Joule heating process with a short heating time (∼10 min) that exhibited beneficial critical current (Ic), retention percentages (84–99 %), and joint resistances (74–697 nΩ cm2) in four independent experiments.In this study, we investigated two heating rates and three tape-joint areas. The results show that for the samples with different tape joint areas, the critical current retention percentages (97–100 %) and uniformity of specific joint resistances (82–272 nΩ cm2) were significantly improved at a high heating rate of ∼30 °C/min. The sintering of silver nanoparticles and oxidation characteristics of the copper stabilizers were observed using transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy to elucidate the effect of different heating profiles. This study opens new avenues for improving the quality of 2G HTS tape joint processes for ultrahigh magnetic field applications.

Abstract Epidemiological studies have reported a positive association between chronic inflammation and cancer risk. However, the causal association between chronic inflammation and breast cancer (BC) risk remains unclear. Here, we performed a Mendelian randomization study to investigate the etiological role of chronic inflammation in BC risk. We acquired data regarding C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin (IL)-1a, IL-1b, and IL-6 expression and BC related to single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from two larger consortia (the genome-wide association studies and the Breast Cancer Association Consortium). Next, we conducted the two-sample Mendelian randomization study to investigate the relationship of the abovementioned inflammatory factors with the incidence of BC. We found that genetically predicted CRP, IL-6, and IL-1a levels did not increase BC incidence (odds ratio (OR)CRP 1.06, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.98–1.12, P = 0.2059, ORIL-6 1.05, 95% CI 0.95–1.16, P = 0.3297 and ORIL-1a 1.01, 95% CI 0.99–1.03, P = 0.2167). However, in subgroup analysis, genetically predicted IL-1b levels increased ER + BC incidence (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.03–1.27, P = 0.0088). Our study suggested that genetically predicted IL-1b levels were found to increase ER + BC susceptibility. However, due to the support of only one SNP, heterogeneity and pleiotropy tests cannot be performed, which deserves further research.

Abstract Renal inflammation is a pivotal mechanism underlying the pathophysiology of diabetic nephropathy (DN). The Src homology phosphatase 2 (SHP2) has been demonstrated to be linked to diabetes-induced inflammation, yet its roles and explicit molecular mechanisms in DN remain unexplored. Here, we report that SHP2 activity is upregulated in both DN patients and db/db mice. In addition, pharmacological inhibition of SHP2 with its specific inhibitor PHPS1 alleviates DN in db/db mice and attenuates renal inflammation. In vitro, PHPS1 administration prevents inflammatory responses in HK-2 cells stimulated by high glucose (HG). Mechanistically, PHPS1 represses HG-induced activation of the proinflammatory ERK/NF-κB signaling pathway, and these inhibitory effects are blocked in the presence of an ERK specific inhibitor, hence demonstrating that PHPS1 suppresses ERK/NF-κB pathway-mediated inflammation. Moreover, PHPS1 retards ERK/NF-κB pathway activation in db/db mice, and histologically, SHP2 activity is positively correlated with ERK/NF-κB activation in DN patients. Taken together, these findings identify SHP2 as a potential therapeutic target and show that its pharmacological inhibition might be a promising strategy to mitigate DN. Video Abstract

Disclosure of sustainability reports is a form of corporate social and environmental responsibility. The company's quality and initiatives in disclosing sustainability reports will impact the preparation of financial reports under the concept of accounting conservatism. This study aims to provide empirical evidence of the effect of sustainability report disclosure on applying accounting conservatism principles. This study comprises manufacturing sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in 2017–2020. The number of samples used in this study was 74, based on the purposive sampling method. The data analysis method in this research is a quantitative analysis using panel data regression analysis with the Random Effect Model (REM). The results of this study indicate that disclosure of sustainability reports has a positive effect on accounting conservatism. This research's contribution is to help companies decide what their corporate responsibility efforts should prioritize. The companies should be more aware of the effects of accounting conservatism and different sustainability report disclosures.

Straw mulching cultivation technology can improve the soil environment of farmland, and it is applied in the dry farming area of Northwestern China. There are few studies on the effect of corn straw mulching on the soil temperature and yield of potato fields in dry land in Northwestern China. In this paper, three treatments, black film ridge (HM), corn straw mulching mechanized no-tillage planting (JG) and no-covering open field flat planting (CK), were set up in the period of 2022 to 2023. A field plot experiment was carried out to determine the soil temperature, growth index, and yield data during the key growth period. The statistical analysis results show that JG and HM significantly increased the potato yield, by 12.27~18.30% and 13.09~18.10%, compared with CK, but there was no significant difference between JG and HM. The yield was significantly positively correlated with tuber weight per plant at the tuber expansion stage, starch accumulation stage, and harvest stage (0.47 *~0.60 **), and significantly negatively correlated with the number of tubers at the harvest stage (−0.54 *). Compared with CK, HM increased the average soil temperature over the whole growth period by 0.27~0.92 °C. In 2022, the increase in the 5 cm soil layer in the tuber expansion period was the largest, reaching 0.83 °C. In 2023, the increase in the 5 cm soil layer in the starch accumulation period was the largest, reaching 3.08 °C. JG reduced the soil temperature over the whole growth period by 0.52 °C, and the 20 cm soil layer in the tuber formation period decreased the most, reaching 1.45 °C, which aggravated the soil temperature change over the whole growth period (the amplitude was 4.13~4.53 °C). The temperature difference between day and night in different growth periods in 2022 was 2.14~5.41 °C, and the soil temperature in some growth periods in 2022 even exceeded that with HM. The results showed that JG could regulate soil temperature and optimize the relationship between tuber weight per plant, tuber number per plant, and biomass allocation during tuber formation, which are beneficial for the improvement of the potato yield in the dry farming area of Northwestern China.

Mulching could effectively improve the soil hydrothermal environment, improve changes in the soil structure, increase entropy, and conserve soil moisture to solve the problem of grain reduction caused by perennial drought in Northwest China. Thus, a two-growing-season field experiment (2021–2022) with five treatments (PM1, biodegradable plastic film mulching; PM2, plastic film mulching; SM1, straw strip mulching; SM2, crushed corn straw full mulching; and CK, no mulching as the control) was conducted to investigate the effects of different mulching materials on the soil hydrothermal environment, soil aggregate distribution, stability, and tuber yield of rainfed potato farmland in Northwest China. Over two growing seasons, mulching planting, on average, increased (p < 0.05) the soil moisture at the 0–200 cm depth by 9.0% relative to CK (SM2 (11.6%) > SM1 (10.3%) > PM2 (8.6%) > PM1 (7.0%)). The mulching treatments significantly regulated the soil temperature during the whole growth period, in which plastic mulching significantly increased the soil temperature of the 0–25 cm soil depth during the whole growth period by 2.1 °C (PM2 (2.1 °C) > PM1 (2.0 °C)); meanwhile, straw mulching significantly reduced the soil temperature by 1.4 °C (SM2 (0.9 °C) > SM1 (0.6 °C)). All mulching treatments improved the soil macroaggregate content and soil aggregate stability in all soil depths from 0 to 40 cm, with increases of 31.4% and 27.1% in the mean weight diameter (MWD) and 22.6% and 21.2% in the geometric mean diameter (GWD) compared with CK, respectively. Straw and plastic mulching significantly increased the fresh tuber yield by 12.5% and 12.6% compared with CK, respectively. The increases were greatest in SM2 and PM2. Crushed corn straw full mulching is difficult to sow and harvest; therefore, straw strip mulching could improve the soil hydrothermal environment, increase production, and provide an environmentally friendly technology for dryland potato production.

The impact of an ice-covered environment on the local flow characteristics of a bridge pier was studied through a series of flume tests, and the dominant factors affecting the scour pattern were found to grasp the change laws of the local hydrodynamic characteristics of the bridge pier under the ice cover. At the same time, because the scour problem of the pier foundation is a technical problem throughout the life-cycle of the bridge, to determine the optimal anti-scour protection effect on the foundation of the bridge pier, active protection scour plate was used to carry out scour protection tests, and its structural shape was optimized to obtain better anti-scour performance. The test results show that the jumping movements of sediment particles in the scour hole around the pier are mainly caused by events Q2 and Q4, which are accompanied by events Q1 and Q3 and cause the particle rolling phenomenon, where Q1 and Q3 events are outward and inward interacting flow regimes, and Q2 and Q4 events are jet and sweeping flow regimes, respectively. The power spectral attenuation rate in front of the upstream pier is high without masking effects, while strong circulation at the remaining locations results in strong vorticity and high spectral density, in particular, when the sampling time series is 60 s (i.e., f = 1/60), the variance loss rates under ice-covered conditions at the front of the upstream pier, between the two piers, and at the tail end of the downstream pier are 0.5%, 4.6%, and 9.8%, respectively, suggesting a smaller contribution of ice cover to the variance loss.

Ice cover is a common phenomenon in rivers in cold regions during the winter freeze-up period, leading to the formation of unsteady bypass structures around underwater piers. To reveal the variation law of the flow field around a pier under ice, a numerical calculation method is proposed to obtain the spatial and temporal characteristics of the fluid flow environment around the pier. The verification of flow conditions and convergence showed that the numerical model constructed in this study is reliable and can meet research requirements. The simulation results showed that the ice-cover condition considerably impacted the extent of a scour hole, and in the horizontal plane Z of −0.02 m, the lateral influence of the scour hole was approximately 2.6 times the diameter of the pier, which was approximately 42% wider than that of a scour hole under open-flow conditions; in the area on the side of the pier, there was a peak in longitudinal section y/D of −0.6, and the relative turbulence intensity was 0.4 and 0.51 under open-flow and ice-cover conditions, respectively, indicating that ice cover made the peak more significant in the area.
