Abstract Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH) poses challenges for targeted delivery and retention of therapeutic proteins due to excess extracellular matrix (ECM). Here we present a new approach to treat MASH, termed “Fibrosis overexpression and retention (FORT)”. In this strategy, we design (1) retinoid-derivative lipid nanoparticle (LNP) to enable enhanced mRNA overexpression in fibrotic regions, and (2) mRNA modifications which facilitate anchoring of therapeutic proteins in ECM. LNPs containing carboxyl-retinoids, rather than alcohol- or ester-retinoids, effectively deliver mRNA with over 10-fold enhancement of protein expression in fibrotic livers. The carboxyl-retinoid rearrangement on the LNP surface improves protein binding and membrane fusion. Therapeutic proteins are then engineered with an endogenous collagen-binding domain. These fusion proteins exhibit increased retention in fibrotic lesions and reduced systemic toxicity. In vivo, fibrosis-targeting LNPs encoding fusion proteins demonstrate superior therapeutic efficacy in three clinically relevant male-animal MASH models. This approach holds promise in fibrotic diseases unsuited for protein injection.

Abstract Background This study aimed to explore the incidence of occult lymph node metastasis (OLM) in clinical T1 − 2N0M0 (cT1 − 2N0M0) small cell lung cancer (SCLC) patients and develop machine learning prediction models using preoperative intratumoral and peritumoral contrast-enhanced CT-based radiomic data. Methods By conducting a retrospective analysis involving 242 eligible patients from 4 centeres, we determined the incidence of OLM in cT1 − 2N0M0 SCLC patients. For each lesion, two ROIs were defined using the gross tumour volume (GTV) and peritumoral volume 15 mm around the tumour (PTV). By extracting a comprehensive set of 1595 enhanced CT-based radiomic features individually from the GTV and PTV, five models were constucted and we rigorously evaluated the model performance using various metrics, including the area under the curve (AUC), accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, calibration curve, and decision curve analysis (DCA). For enhanced clinical applicability, we formulated a nomogram that integrates clinical parameters and the rad_score (GTV and PTV). Results The initial investigation revealed a 33.9% OLM positivity rate in cT1 − 2N0M0 SCLC patients. Our combined model, which incorporates three radiomic features from the GTV and PTV, along with two clinical parameters (smoking status and shape), exhibited robust predictive capabilities. With a peak AUC value of 0.772 in the external validation cohort, the model outperformed the alternative models. The nomogram significantly enhanced diagnostic precision for radiologists and added substantial value to the clinical decision-making process for cT1 − 2N0M0 SCLC patients. Conclusions The incidence of OLM in SCLC patients surpassed that in non-small cell lung cancer patients. The combined model demonstrated a notable generalization effect, effectively distinguishing between positive and negative OLMs in a noninvasive manner, thereby guiding individualized clinical decisions for patients with cT1 − 2N0M0 SCLC.

Solar‐driven evaporation using hydrogels and photothermal materials is a promising freshwater harvesting technology. However, due to the difficulty of removing volatile pollutants through evaporation and the fact that the evaporation efficiency has reached its limit, further improving efficiency becomes challenging. Therefore, a material simultaneously possessing low water evaporation enthalpy as well as the ability to inhibit volatile pollutants is desired. In this work, a dense inhibitory layer on the hydrogel framework of polyacrylamide introduced into polyvinyl alcohol is designed to enhance its suppression of volatile pollutants and regulate the water state. This not only reduces the energy demand for evaporation but also makes it more effective in treating wastewater containing volatile pollutant ammonia nitrogen. Finally, a high evaporation rate of 3.0 kg m−2 h−1 and an excellent ammonium rejection rate of 90% for high concentration ammonia wastewater are obtained under 1 kW m−2 illumination. This work opens up new avenues of application for the use of photothermal materials in the use of clean solar energy for the separation of freshwater and volatile small molecules.

Stress shielding effects and bioinertia are two main problems of titanium alloy orthopedic implants, which are commonly used in clinical therapy. By adjusting the porosity of the Ti alloy, the stress shielding effects can be avoided and the strength of the titanium alloy is also significantly decreased. To improve the mechanical property and bioactivity, Ti–Mg composites were fabricated by pressureless infiltration and 3D printed. Excellent mechanical properties, biocompatibility and bioactivity of the Ti–Mg composites were demonstrated by in vitro and in vivo results. The ultimate compressive strength and compressive yield strength could be increased to 292.5 ± 10.0 MPa and 27.9 % 220.0 ± 11.5 MPa, respectively. Furthermore, the bioactivity of Ti–Mg composites was also significantly improved due to the release of Mg ions during the degradation process, which can promote osteoblast adhesion and differentiation.

ABSTRACTObjective To investigate the prognostic value of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), serum albumin (ALB) and the lactate dehydrogenase/albumin ratio (LAR) in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) before primary treatment.Methods The clinical data of 212 primary adult DLBCL patients admitted to the First People's Hospital of Lianyungang from January 2017 to December 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. The optimal cutoff values of LDH, ALB, and LAR were determined using ROC curves. Survival curves of LDH, ALB, and LAR were plotted and analyzed using the Cox regression model and Kaplan–Meier method with the log-rank test.Results Among the 212 patients admitted, the study derived the optimal cutoff values for ALB, LDH, and LAR as 38, 301, and 6, respectively. Abstract Messenger RNA (mRNA) cancer vaccines are a new class of immunotherapies that can activate the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells. However, their effectiveness in treating colorectal cancer located on the mucosal surface of the gut is limited due to the insufficient activation of mucosal immune response and inadequate infiltration of cytotoxic T cells into tumors. To address this issue, a new mRNA cancer vaccine is developed that can stimulate mucosal immune responses in the gut by co‐delivering all‐trans‐retinoic acid (ATRA) and mRNA using lipid nanoparticle (LNP). The incorporation of ATRA has not only improved the mRNA transfection efficiency of LNP but also induced high expression of gut‐homing receptors on vaccine‐activated T cells. Additionally, the use of LNP improves the aqueous solubility of ATRA, eliminating the need for toxic solvents to administer ATRA. Upon intramuscular injections, ATRA‐adjuvanted mRNA‐LNP significantly increase the infiltration of antigen‐specific, cytotoxic T cells in the lamina propria of the intestine, mesenteric lymph nodes, and orthotopic colorectal tumors, resulting in significantly improved tumor inhibition and prolonged animal survival compared to conventional mRNA‐LNP without ATRA. Overall, this study provides a promising approach for improving the therapeutic efficacy of mRNA cancer vaccines against colorectal cancer.

Aiming at the problems of low accuracy and poor real-time recognition of railway personnel intrusion, an R-YOLO track personnel target detection model was proposed based on the YOLOv4 model. Firstly, the original CSPDarknet53 network was replaced by the lightweight backbone network ResNet50, and the standard convolution in PANet was replaced by deep separable convolution, which reduces the number of network layers and model volume, and accelerates the model recognition speed. Secondly, the effective channel attention module was added to the three feature layers before and after strengthening the feature extraction network, and the K-means++ clustering algorithm was used to re-cluster and analyze the dataset to improve the accuracy of the target detection model. In terms of model training, transfer learning and hybrid dataset joint training were used to solve the problems of poor personnel identification accuracy,false detection and leakage detection. Finally, the R-YOLO track personnel target detection model was used to test the real railway personnel intrusion dataset. The experimental results show that the average recognition accuracy of the R-YOLO model on the real railway personnel intrusion dataset reaches 92 .12%, which is 1 .89% higher than that of the traditional YOLOv4 algorithm, and the frame rate increases from 38.74 f·s-1 to 47.73 f·s-1. The R-YOLO model improves the problem of false detection and leakage of railway intrusion personnel, improves the real-time and accuracy of railway personnel intrusion identification, and provides guarantee for the safe operation of railway.

This paper discusses low-cost approaches capable of ranking traffic intersections for the purpose of signal re-timing. We extracted intersections that are comprised of multiple roads, defined by alphanumeric traffic message channel segment codes per international classification standards. Each of these road segments includes a variety of metrics, including congestion, planning time index, and bottleneck ranking information provided by the Regional Integrated Transportation Information System. Our first approach was to use a ranking formula to calculate intersection rankings using a score between 0 and 10 by considering data for different times of the day and different days of the week, weighting weekdays more heavily than weekends and morning and evening commute times more heavily than other times of day. The second method was to utilize unsupervised machine learning algorithms, primarily k-means clustering, to accomplish the intersection ranking task. We first approach this by checking the performance of basic k-means clustering on our data set. We then explore the ranking problem further by utilizing data provided by traffic professionals in the state of Tennessee. This exploration involves using MATLAB to minimize the mean-squared error of intersection rankings to determine the optimum weights in the ranking formula based on a city's professional data. We then attempted an optimization of our weights via a brute-force search approach to minimize the distance from ranking formula results to the clustering results. All the ranking information was aggregated into an online SQL database hosted by Amazon web services that utilized the PHP scripting language.

Abstract Uniparental-inherited haploid genetic marker of Y­chromosome single nucleotide polymorphisms (Y-SNP) have the power to provide a deep understanding of the human evolutionary past, forensic pedigree, and bio-geographical ancestry information. Several international cross-continental or regional Y-panels instead of Y-whole sequencing have recently been developed to promote Y-tools in forensic practice. However, panels based on next-generation sequencing (NGS) explicitly developed for Chinese populations are insufficient to represent the Chinese Y-chromosome genetic diversity and complex population structures, especially for Chinese-predominant haplogroup O. We developed and validated a 639-plex panel including 633 Y-SNPs and 6 Y-Insertion/deletions, which covered 573 Y haplogroups on the Y-DNA haplogroup tree. In this panel, subgroups from haplogroup O accounted for 64.4% of total inferable haplogroups. We reported the sequencing metrics of 354 libraries sequenced with this panel, with the average sequencing depth among 226 individuals being 3,741×. We illuminated the high level of concordance, accuracy, reproducibility, and specificity of the 639-plex panel and found that 610 loci were genotyped with as little as 0.03 ng of genomic DNA in the sensitivity test. 94.05% of the 639 loci were detectable in male-female mixed DNA samples with a mix ratio of 1:500. Nearly all of the loci were genotyped correctly when no more than 25 ng/μL tannic acid, 20 ng/μL humic acid, or 37.5 μM hematin was added to the amplification mixture. More than 80% of genotypes were obtained from degraded DNA samples with a degradation index of 11.76. Individuals from the same pedigree shared identical genotypes in 11 male pedigrees. Finally, we presented the complex evolutionary history of 183 northern Chinese Hans and six other Chinese populations, and found multiple founding lineages that contributed to the northern Han Chinese gene pool. The 639-plex panel proved an efficient tool for Chinese paternal studies and forensic applications.

To clarify the influence of the serpentine nozzle configurations on the flow characteristics and aerodynamic performance of aircraft, the flow features and aerodynamic performances of the double-ducted serpentine nozzles with different aspect ratios (AR), length–diameter ratios (LDR) and shielding ratios (SR) are numerically investigated. The results show that the asymmetric nozzle flow occurs due to the curved profile of serpentine nozzles, and a local accelerating effect exists at the S-bend, causing the increase in wall shear stress. The unilateral unsymmetrical expansion of the tail jet in the upward direction interacts with the separated external flow of the afterbody, forming an obvious cross-shock wave and shear layer structure. The surface pressure of the afterbody increases along the external flow direction, and decreases sharply in the separation point of the boundary layer. With the increase in AR and LDR, the local accelerating effect of the nozzle flow weakens, while with the increase in SR, the accelerating effect increases. The total pressure recovery coefficient, flow coefficient and axial thrust coefficient all decrease with the increase in AR, LDR, and SR. The thrust vector angle decreases with the increase in AR but is less affected by LDR and SR.

ObjectiveThe Toll-like receptor (TLR) 4-mediated nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway regulates the production of inflammatory factors and plays a key role in the pathogenesis of gouty arthritis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the link among TLR4 gene polymorphisms at various loci, protein expression, and gouty arthritis susceptibility.MethodsBetween 2016 and 2021, a case-control study was used to collect a total of 1207 study subjects, including 317 male patients with gouty arthritis (gout group) and 890 healthy males (control group). The association between gout susceptibility and different genetic models was analyzed by typing three loci of the TLR4 gene (rs2149356, rs2737191, and rs10759932) using a multiplex point mutation rapid assay, and the association between protein expression and gout was confirmed by measuring TLR4 protein concentrations using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs).ResultsIn a codominant models AA and AG, the rs2737191 polymorphism in the gout group increased the risk of gout compared to the AA genotype (OR = 2.249, 95%CI 1.010~5.008), and the risk of gout was higher for those carrying the G allele compared to the A allele (OR = 2.227, 95%CI 1.006~4.932). TLR4 protein expression was different between the two groups with different locus genotypes. The differences in TLR4 protein expression between the gout group and control group were statistically significant between the following genotypes: the GG and GT genotypes of the rs2149356 polymorphism; the AA and AG genotypes of the rs2737191 polymorphism; and the TT and TC genotypes of the rs10759932 polymorphism(PConclusionThe AG genotype of the TLR4 gene rs2737191 polymorphism may be correlated with the development of gouty arthritis. The level of TLR4 protein expression is significantly higher in patients with gouty arthritis than in controls, and there is a correlation between high TLR4 protein expression and the development of gouty arthritis.

Objectives: Patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations in lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) can benefit from individualized targeted therapy. This study aims to develop, compare, analyse prediction models based on dual-energy spectral computed tomography (DESCT) and CT-based radiomic features to non-invasively predict EGFR mutation status in LUAD. Materials and methods: Patients with LUAD (n = 175), including 111 patients with and 64 patients without EGFR mutations, were enrolled in the current study. All patients were randomly divided into a training dataset (122 cases) and validation dataset (53 cases) at a ratio of 7:3. After extracting CT-based radiomic, DESCT and clinical features, we built seven prediction models and a nomogram of the best prediction. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and the mean area under the curve (AUC) values were used for comparisons among the models to obtain the best prediction model for predicting EGFR mutations. Results: The best distinguishing ability is the combined model incorporating radiomic, DESCT and clinical features for predicting the EGFR mutation status with an AUC of 0.86 (95 % CI: 0.79–0.92) in the training group and an AUC value of 0.83 (95 % CI: 0.73, 0.96) in the validation group. Conclusions: Our study provides a predictive nomogram non-invasively with a combination of CT-based radiomic, DESCT and clinical features, which can provide image-based biological information for targeted therapy of LUAD with EGFR mutations.

Background: With the popularization of lung cancer screening, more early-stage lung cancers are being detected. This study aims to compare three types of N classifications, including location-based N classification (pathologic nodal classification [pN]), the number of lymph node stations (nS)-based N classification (nS classification), and the combined approach proposed by the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) which incorporates both pN and nS classification to determine if the nS classification is more appropriate for early-stage lung cancer. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data of lung cancer patients treated at the Cancer Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences between 2005 and 2018. Inclusion criteria was clinical stage IA lung adenocarcinoma patients who underwent resection during this period. Sub-analyses were performed for the three types of N classifications. The optimal cutoff values for nS classification were determined with X-tile software. Kaplan‒Meier and multivariate Cox analyses were performed to assess the prognostic significance of the different N classifications. The prediction performance among the three types of N classifications was compared using the concordance index (C-index) and decision curve analysis (DCA). Results: Of the 669 patients evaluated, 534 had pathological stage N0 disease (79.8%), 82 had N1 disease (12.3%) and 53 had N2 disease (7.9%). Multivariate Cox analysis indicated that all three types of N classifications were independent prognostic factors for prognosis (all P 1 [P = 0.006]). There was no significant difference in the C-index values between the three N classifications (P = 0.370). The DCA results demonstrated that the nS classification provided greater clinical utility. Conclusion: The nS classification might be a better choice for nodal classification in clinical stage IA lung adenocarcinoma.

SiGe is recognised as an excellent thermoelectric material with superior mechanical properties and thermal stability in regions with high temperatures. This study explores a novel strategy for co-regulating thermoelectric transport parameters to achieve high thermoelectric properties of p-type SiGe in the mid-temperature region by incorporating nano-TaC into SiGe combined ball milling with spark plasma sintering. By optimizing the amount of TaC in the SiGe matrix, the power factors were significantly increased due to the modulation doping effect based on the work function matching of SiGe with TaC. Simultaneously, the ensemble effect of the nanostructure leads to a significant decrease in thermal conductivity. Thus, a high ZT of 1.06 was accomplished at 873 K, which is 64 % higher than that of typical radioisotope thermoelectric generator. Our research offers a novel strategy for expanding and enhancing the thermoelectric properties of SiGe materials in the medium temperature range.

It is common sense that a phase interface (or grain boundary) could be used to scatter phonons in thermoelectric (TE) materials, resulting in low thermal conductivity (κ). However, a large number of impurity phases are always so harmful to the transport of carriers that poor TE performance is obtained. Here, we demonstrate that numerous superior multiphase (AgCuTe, Ag2Te, copper telluride (Cu2Te and Cu2−xTe), and nickel telluride (NiTe)) interfaces with simultaneous strong phonon scattering and weak electron scattering could be realized in AgCuTe-based TE materials. Owing to the similar chemical bonds in these phases, the depletion region at phase interfaces, which acts as carrier scattering centers, could be ignored. Therefore, the power factor (PF) is obviously enhanced from ~609 to ~832 μW·m−1·K−2, and κ is simultaneously decreased from ~0.52 to ~0.43 W·m−1·K−1 at 636 K. Finally, a peak figure of merit (zT) of ~1.23 at 636 K and an average zT (zTavg) of ~1.12 in the temperature range of 523–623 K are achieved, which are one of the best values among the AgCuTe-based TE materials. This study could provide new guidance to enhance the performance by designing superior multiphase interfaces in the TE materials.

Abstract Background In this study, we estimated the trend of unintentional injury mortality among children aged under-five years in China during 2010–2020. Methods Data were obtained from China’s Under 5 Child Mortality Surveillance System (U5CMSS). The total unintentional injury mortality and all specific-causes unintentional injury mortality was calculated, annual numbers of deaths and live births were adjusted by a 3-year moving average under-reporting rate. The Poisson regression model and the Cochran-Mantel-Haenszel method were used to calculate the average annual decline rate (AADR) and the adjusted relative risk (aRR) of the unintentional injury mortality. Results In 2010–2020, a total of 7,925 unintentional injury-related deaths were reported in U5CMSS, accounting for 18.7% of all reported deaths. ABSTRACTWang K. et al. introduced the concept of Microbial-Host isozymes (MHIs) and highlighted their role in mediating microbiota–host interactions. They identified bacterial-derived DPP4 as an isoenzyme affecting glucose tolerance and showed that host DPP4 inhibitors may not effectively target bacterial DPP4. They developed an MHI screen system, identifying 71 MHIs in healthy gut microbiota. Among them, DPP4 isozymes degrade GLP-1, explaining variable responses to sitagliptin. This breakthrough opens new avenues for metabolic disorder treatment. However, the complex nature of gut symbiotic bacteria requires further research to understand MHI mechanisms, regulatory roles, and interactions with the host. Precise interventions in gut microbiota offer personalized approaches to metabolic diseases.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation has emerged as an efficient and sustainable way to generate freshwater from seawater to address the crisis of drinkable water. Though rational designs of photothermal materials and structures are essential to the interfacial solar evaporation process, the salt accumulation remains a challenge to the long-term operation of seawater desalination. Here, we report a high-yield and low-cost natural sphagnum as solar steam generator with ultra-fast water transportation, unique microstructure to prevent salting out, and high evaporation rates. The carbonized sphagnum based photothermal evaporator exhibits a strong broad-band light absorption (>97.0 %). During the solar steam generation, a high evaporation rate of 3.53 kg m−2 h−1 was achieved under 1.0 sun illumination. More significantly, the 3D sphagnum evaporator shows excellent selective filtration of salt ions and cycling stability in actual sea water even high salinity solution (10 wt.% NaCl) for 7 days. This work provides an environmentally friendly and cost-effective photothermal material for large-scale seawater desalination, and treatment of waste water with high ions concentration.

Objective: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy is one of the major toxicities in multiple myeloma patients, often resulting in dose reductions or treatment interruptions. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation is a safe non-invasive neuromodulation therapy with potential benefits for chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy in multiple myeloma patients. Materials and methods: We screened 30 multiple myeloma patients with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy who underwent repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment in this study. Prior to and following repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation treatment, patients were assessed with nerve conduction velocity, visual analog scale and the European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire-CIPN 20-item scale (EORTC QLQ-CIPN20). Abstract Background Non-recombining regions of the Y-chromosome recorded the evolutionary traces of male human populations and are inherited haplotype-dependently and male-specifically. Recent whole Y-chromosome sequencing studies have identified previously unrecognized population divergence, expansion and admixture processes, which promotes a better understanding and application of the observed patterns of Y-chromosome genetic diversity. Results Here, we developed one highest-resolution Y-chromosome single nucleotide polymorphism (Y-SNP) panel targeted for uniparental genealogy reconstruction and paternal biogeographical ancestry inference, which included 639 phylogenetically informative SNPs. We genotyped these loci in 1033 Chinese male individuals from 33 ethnolinguistically diverse populations and identified 256 terminal Y-chromosomal lineages with frequency ranging from 0.0010 (singleton) to 0.0687. We identified six dominant common founding lineages associated with different ethnolinguistic backgrounds, which included O2a2b1a1a1a1a1a1a1-M6539, O2a1b1a1a1a1a1a1-F17, O2a2b1a1a1a1a1b1a1b-MF15397, O2a2b2a1b1-A16609, O1b1a1a1a1b2a1a1-F2517, and O2a2b1a1a1a1a1a1-F155. The AMOVA and nucleotide diversity estimates revealed considerable differences and high genetic diversity among ethnolinguistically different populations. We constructed one representative phylogenetic tree among 33 studied populations based on the haplogroup frequency spectrum and sequence variations. Clustering patterns in principal component analysis and multidimensional scaling results showed a genetic differentiation between Tai-Kadai-speaking Li, Mongolic-speaking Mongolian, and other Sinitic-speaking Han Chinese populations. Phylogenetic topology inferred from the BEAST and Network relationships reconstructed from the popART further showed the founding lineages from culturally/linguistically diverse populations, such as C2a/C2b was dominant in Mongolian people and O1a/O1b was dominant in island Li people. We also identified many lineages shared by more than two ethnolinguistically different populations with a high proportion, suggesting their extensive admixture and migration history. Conclusions Our findings indicated that our developed high-resolution Y-SNP panel included major dominant Y-lineages of Chinese populations from different ethnic groups and geographical regions, which can be used as the primary and powerful tool for forensic practice. We should emphasize the necessity and importance of whole sequencing of more ethnolinguistically different populations, which can help identify more unrecognized population-specific variations for the promotion of Y-chromosome-based forensic applications.

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) has been widely regarded as a prospective bifunctional material due to its electrochromic and pseudocapacitive properties, while still facing the dilemma of inadequate cycle stability and trapping-induced degradation. Here, inspired by the trees-strengthening approach, a unique titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanorod arrays strengthened WO3 nano-trees (TWNTs) heterojunction was rationally designed and constructed. In sharp contrast to the transmittance modulation (ΔT) attenuation of primary WO3 nano-trees during cycling, the TWNTs film showed not only excellent electrochromic performance but also fascinating cycle stability (77.35% retention of the initial ΔT after 10,000 cycles). Besides, the trapping-induced degradation could be easily rejuvenated by a potentiostatic de-trapping process. An electrochromic energy storage device (EESD) was further assembled based on the TWNTs film to deliver excellent ΔT (up to 79.5% at 633 nm), fast switching speed (tc/tb =1.9 s/14.8 s), extremely high coloration efficiency value (443.4 cm2·C−1), and long-term cycle stability (over 10,000 charge/discharge cycles). This innovative study provided in-depth insights into the electrochromism nature and a significant step in the realization of stable electrochromic-energy storage application, paving the way for multifunctional smart windows as well as next-generation optoelectronic devices.

Si-based thermoelectric (TE) materials are exhibiting remarkable perspectives in self-energized applications with their special advantages. However, the relatively high total thermal conductivity (κ) prevents their TE enhancement. Here, a strategy of co-compositing dual oxides was implemented for enhancing the TE properties of p-type Si80Ge20 bulks. Composited Ga2O3 was demonstrated to enhance the power factor (PF) due to the crystallization-induced effect of produced Ga by decomposition on SiGe matrix. Associating with compositing SiO2 aerogel (a-SiO2) powder, not only introduced the fine amorphous inclusions and decreased the grain size of host matrix, but also various nano morphologies were formed, i.e., nano inclusions, precipitations, twin boundaries (TBs), and faults. Combining with the eutectic Ge, hierarchical scattering centers impeded the phonon transport comprehensively (decreasing the phonon group velocity (va) and relaxation time) for reducing the lattice-induced thermal conductivity (κl). As a result, a minimum κ of 2.38 W·m−1·K−1 was achieved, which is significantly dropped by 32.6% in contrast with that of the pristine counterpart. Ultimately, a maximal dimensionless figure of merit (ZT) of 0.9 was achieved at 600 ℃, which is better than those of most corresponding oxide-composited Si-based bulks.

Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) genetic markers and ribonucleic acid (RNA) molecular markers have been widely used in forensic practices including individual identification, parentage testing, body fluid identification, determination of the age of stains, and molecular pathological diagnosis. Variant information of biological evidence and their interrelation could be revealed by the integrated detection of DNA/RNA markers. The integrated detection workflow aims to simplify working procedures, reduce time consuming and save valuable samples collected from crime scenes. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) may be an effective method for integrated DNA/RNA detection. In this review, DNA/RNA co-extraction strategies, simultaneous detection methods based on capillary electrophoresis were summarized. Research on NGS-based integrated detection methods of DNA and RNA markers was reviewed to provide a reference for forensic medicine researches and applications.

Bi-based YbMg2Bi1.98 Zintl compounds represent promising thermoelectric materials. Precise composition and appropriate doping are of great importance for this complex semiconductor. Here, the influence of Zn substitution for Mg on the microstructure and thermoelectric properties of p-type YbMg1.85−xZnxBi1.98 (x = 0, 0.05, 0.08, 0.13, 0.23) was investigated. Polycrystalline samples were prepared using induction melting and densified with spark plasma sintering. X-ray diffraction confirmed that the major phase of the samples possesses the trigonal CaAl2Si2-type crystal structure, and SEM/EDS indicated the presence of minor secondary phases. The electrical conductivity increases and the lattice thermal conductivity decreases with more Zn doping in YbMg1.85−xZnxBi1.98, whereas the Seebeck coefficient has a large reduction. The band gap decreases with increasing Zn concentration and leads to bipolar conduction, resulting in an increase in the thermal conductivity at higher temperatures. Figure of merit ZT values of 0.51 and 0.49 were found for the samples with x = 0 and 0.05 at 773 K, respectively. The maximum amount of Zn doping is suggested to be less than x = 0.1.

To compare the effects of different thermal boundary models on the output performance of a thermoelectric generator, this study used COSMOL software to analyze the influence of different thermal boundary models on output power. Considering maximuming power density, the effects of thermal boundary models on PN(P and N type semiconductor) pair structure optimization were also calculated. In addition, for each model, the output power using a constant physical property and variable physical property was also compared. The results showed that it is not recommended to consider the thermal isolation boundary between PN pairs. Moreover, different models had the same optimal scale regardless of the hot side temperature of the thermoelectric module at the range of fixed lengths. When the temperature of the hot end was below 250 °C, the variable physical property of thermoelectric materials could be replaced by a constant physical property case to simplify the model and exhibit power calculation accuracy.

Even with intensive treatment of high-risk neuroblastoma (NB) patients, half of high-risk NB patients still relapse. New therapies targeting the biological characteristics of NB have important clinical value for the personalized treatment of NB. However, the current biological markers for NB are mainly analyzed by tissue biopsy. In recent years, circulating biomarkers of NB based on liquid biopsy have attracted more and more attention. This review summarizes the analytes and methods for liquid biopsy of NB. We focus on the application of liquid biopsy in the diagnosis, prognosis assessment, and monitoring of NB. Finally, we discuss the prospects and challenges of liquid biopsy in NB.

Signal retiming is a prominent way that transportation agencies use to fight congestion and change of traffic pattern. Performance evaluations of traffic conditions at signalized intersections and arterials provide actionable data for agencies to make well-informed and prioritized signal retiming decisions. However, the abundance of data sources, the lack of standardized evaluation methods and oftentimes the shortage of resources make it a difficult endeavor. The review detailed in this paper examines the advances made in traffic signal performance evaluation. We establish the necessity for the evaluations, study the process of continuous improvement of traffic signal performance using the evaluations, and then examine multiple methodologies in a plethora of research endeavors. Particularly, we focus on probe vehicles and sensors data, the two major sources of data. We discuss how sensors are connected to signal controllers to provide relevant in-depth traffic data including speed and occupancy measures. We also review the nature of probe vehicles and the level of penetration. We then define and summarize performance measures derived from both sources, to aid in performance evaluations. For performance evaluation methods, we discuss the research studies and provide summaries including advantages and disadvantages of the methods used, as well as a holistic outlook for future research. This paper is aimed to provide a comprehensive review on the state-of-the-art to benefit researcher, traffic agencies, and commercial entities that thrive to improve safety and efficiency of traffic signals through performance evaluations.

Abstract The argyrodite compounds (A (12−n) m/m+ B n+X 6 2− (A m+ = Li+, Cu+, and Ag+; B n+ = Ga3+, Si4+, Ge4+, Sn4+, P5+, and As5+; and X2− = S2−, Se2−, or Te2−)) have attracted great attention as excellent thermoelectric (TE) materials due to their extremely low lattice thermal conductivity Among them, Ag8SnSe6-based TE materials have high potential for TE applications. However, the pristine Ag8SnSe6 materials have low carrier concentration (< 1017 cm−3), resulting in low power factors. In this study, a hydrothermal method was used to synthesize Ag8SnSe6 with high purity, and the introduction of SnBr2 into the pristine Ag8SnSe6 powders has been used to simultaneously increase the power factor and decrease the thermal conductivity (κ). On the one hand, a portion of the Br− ions acted as electrons to increase the carrier concentration, increasing the power factor to a value of ∼698 µW·m−1·K−2 at 736 K. On the other hand, some of the dislocations and nanoprecipitates (SnBr2) were generated, resulting in a decrease of κ 1 (−0.13 W·m−1·K−1) at 578 K. As a result, the zT value reaches ∼1.42 at 735 K for the sample Ag8Sn1.03Se5.94Br0.06, nearly 30% enhancement in contrast with that of the pristine sample (−1.09). The strategy of synergistic manipulation of carrier concentration and microstructure by introducing halogen compounds could be applied to the argyrodite compounds to improve the TE properties.

Abstract Objective To investigate the value of contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) radiomics features in predicting the efficacy of epirubicin combined with ifosfamide in patients with pulmonary metastases from soft tissue sarcoma. Methods A retrospective analysis of 51 patients with pulmonary metastases from soft tissue sarcoma who received the chemotherapy regimen of epirubicin combined with ifosfamide was performed, and efficacy was evaluated by Recist1.1. ROIs (1 or 2) were selected for each patient. Lung metastases were used as target lesions (86 target lesions total), and the patients were divided into a progression group (n = 29) and a non-progressive group (n = 57); the latter included a stable group (n = 34) and a partial response group (n = 23). Information on lung metastases was extracted from CECT images before chemotherapy, and all lesions were delineated by ITK-SNAP software manually or semiautomatically. The decision tree classifier had a better performance in all radiomics models. A receiver operating characteristic curve was plotted to evaluate the predictive performance of the radiomics model. Results In total, 851 CECT radiomics features were extracted for each target lesion and finally reduced to 2 radiomics features, which were then used to construct a radiomics model. Areas under the curves of the model for predicting lesion progression were 0.917 and 0.856 in training and testing groups, respectively. Conclusion The model established based on the radiomics features of CECT before treatment has certain predictive value for assessing the efficacy of chemotherapy for patients with soft tissue sarcoma lung metastases.

Background Neuroblastoma (NB) places a substantial health burden on families worldwide. This study aimed to develop an immune checkpoint-based signature (ICS) based on the expression of immune checkpoints to better assess patient survival risk and potentially guide patient selection for immunotherapy of NB.Methods Immunohistochemistry integrated with digital pathology was used to determine the expression levels of 9 immune checkpoints in 212 tumor tissues used as the discovery set. The GSE85047 dataset (n=272) was used as a validation set in this study. In the discovery set, the ICS was constructed using a random forest algorithm and confirmed in the validation set to predict overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS). Kaplan-Meier curves with a log-rank test were drawn to compare the survival differences. A receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was applied to calculate the area under the curve (AUC).Results Seven immune checkpoints, including PD-L1, B7-H3, IDO1, VISTA, T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin domain containing-3 (TIM-3), inducible costimulatory molecule (ICOS) and costimulatory molecule 40 (OX40), were identified as abnormally expressed in NB in the discovery set. In the building field, campus buildings are a building group with great energy-saving potential due to a lack of reasonable energy management policies. The accurate prediction of power energy usage is the basis for energy management. To address this issue, this study proposes a novel combined forecasting model based on clustering results, which can achieve a short-time prediction of daily electricity based on a campus building’s electricity data over the past 15 days. Considering the diversity of campus buildings in energy consumption and functional aspects, the selected campus buildings are firstly classified into three categories using K-Means clustering in terms of their daily power consumption. Compared with the mainstream building energy consumption prediction models, i.e., LSTM and SVR, the results show that the combined forecast model is superior to other models. Furthermore, an average percentage fluctuation (APF) index is found to be close to the MAPE, which can reflect the prediction accuracy in advance.

Abstract Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become the most common chronic liver disease worldwide. NAFLD‐related cirrhosis is often complicated by portal hypertension (PHT). Recent evidence showed that portal venous pressure (PVP) starts to rise in the early stages of NAFLD, even in absence of advanced fibrosis or cirrhosis. However, the precise pathological mechanisms of this process are still poorly understood. Lipid accumulation, hepatocellular ballooning, sinusoidal endothelial cell dysfunction, capillarization, microthrombosis, increased angiogenesis, and pericellular fibrosis may all be involved in the early development of increased PVP in NAFLD. Direct measurement of PHT is invasive and impractical in noncirrhotic NAFLD individuals and may also underestimate its severity. Thus, the development and validation of noninvasive and more accurate measurements, including new serum biomarkers, scoring models, and imaging techniques (such as ultrasonography, elastography, and magnetic resonance imaging), are urgently needed. Owing to the increasing morbidity, challenges in the prevention and management of PHT in NAFLD are unprecedented. This review article aims to briefly discuss these challenges and summarizes the mechanisms, diagnosis, and emerging therapies for PHT in people with NAFLD.

Abstract Background Glioma is one of the central nervous system (CNS) tumors in children, accounting for 80% of malignant brain tumors. Nucleotide excision repair (NER) is a vital pathway during DNA damage repair progression. Xeroderma pigmentosum group D (XPD) or excision repair cross‐complementing group 2 (ERCC2) is a critical factor in the NER pathway, playing an indispensable role in the DNA repair process. Therefore, the genetic variants in XPD may be associated with carcinogenesis induced by defects in DNA repair. Methods We are the first to conduct a multi‐center case‐control study to investigate the correlation between XPD gene polymorphisms and pediatric glioma risk. We chose three single nucleotide polymorphisms and genotyped them using the TaqMan assay. Results Although there is no significant association of these genetic variations with glioma susceptibility, the stratified analysis revealed that in the subtype of astrocytic tumors, the rs13181 TG/GG genotype enhanced glioma risk than the TT genotype, and carriers with two to three genotypes also elevated the tumor risk than 0‐1 genotypes. Conclusion In conclusion, our findings provided an insight into the impact of XPD genetic variants on glioma risk.

Abstract Background The infant mortality rate (IMR) is considered a basic measure of public health for countries around the world. The specific aim of our study was to provide an updated description of infant mortality rate among different regions in rural China, and assess the trends and causes of the IMR geographical disparities. Methods Data were collected from China’s Under-5 Child Mortality Surveillance System(U5CMSS). The annual number of deaths and causes of death were adjusted using a 3-year moving average underreporting rate based on annual national data quality control results. The average annual decline rate (AADR) and the relative risk (RR) of the IMR and cause-specific infant mortality were calculated by Poisson regression and the Cochran–Mantel–Haenszel method. Data analysis was completed by SAS software. Results There was an apparent decrease in infant mortality in rural China from 2010 to 2018, at the AADR of 11.0% (95%CI 9.6–12.4), 11.2% (95%CI 10.3–12.1) and 6.6% (95%CI 6.0–7.3) in the eastern, central and western rural areas, respectively. The IMR was highest in the western rural area, followed by the central and eastern rural areas. Compared with the eastern rural area, the RR of infant mortality in the central rural area remained at 1.4–1.6 and increased from 2.4 (95%CI 2.3–2.6) in 2010–2012 to 3.1 (95% CI 2.9–3.4) in 2016–2018 in the western rural area. Pneumonia, preterm birth /LBW and birth asphyxia were the leading causes of infant deaths in the western rural area. Mortality rates of these three causes fell significantly in 2010–2018 but contributed to a higher proportion of deaths in the western rural area than in the central and western rural ares. Conclusions Our study indicated that the infant mortality rate dropped significantly from 2010 to 2018, however, geographical disparities of IMR in rural China are still persist. Therefore, there is an urgent need for public health programmes and policy interventions for infants in western rural China.

Triclocarban (TCC), an emerging organic contaminant (EOC), has become a severe threat to soil microbial communities and ecological security. Here, the TCC-degrading strain Rhodococcus rhodochrous BX2 and DCA-degrading strain Pseudomonas sp. LY-1 (together referred to as TC1) were immobilized on biochar to remove TCC and its intermediates in TCC-contaminated soil. High-throughput sequencing was used to investigate the microbial community structure in TCC-contaminated soil. Analysis of co-occurrence networks was used to explore the mutual relationships among soil microbiome members. The results showed that the immobilized TC1 significantly increased the removal efficiency of TCC from 84.7 to 92.7% compared to CK (no TC1 cells on biochar) in 10 mg/L TCC liquid medium. The utilization of immobilized TC1 also significantly accelerated the removal of TCC from contaminated soil. Microbial community analysis revealed the crucial microorganisms and their functional enzymes participating in TCC degradation in soil. Moreover, the internal labor division patterns and connections of TCC-degrading microbes, with a focus on strains BX2 and LY-1, were unraveled by co-occurrence networks analysis. This work provides a promising strategy to facilitate the bioremediation of TCC in soil, which has potential application value for sustainable biobased economies.

Introduction Central nervous system leukemia (CNSL) is the most common extramedullary relapse site in patients with Philadelphia chromosome-positive (Ph-positive) acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), with a poor prognosis and high relapse rate. Methods We characterized the clinical data of 21 Ph-positive B-ALL patients to analyze the efficacy and safety of ponatinib for patients with central nervous system relapsed Ph-positive ALL retrospectively. Results There were 11 males and 10 females in the cohort, and their median age was 45 (9-58) years old. The total CR (complete remission) rate was 90.5%. All 9 patients achieved CR in the ponatinib group, and 10 patients achieved CR in the dasatinib group (100% vs 83.3%, respectively; P = .486) and minimal residual disease-positive CR in the ponatinib group and dasatinib group (88.9% vs 58.3%, P = .178). The medium time after achieving CR was 5 and 8 weeks ( P = .047). The total median overall survival (OS) was 31.1 months, and the 3-year OS was 49.0%. The median relapse-free survival (RFS) was 31.0 months, and the 3-year RFS was 45.2%. Patients in the ponatinib group showed a significantly longer OS than those patients in the dasatinib group with (medium OS not reached vs 27.6 months, P = .045) or without (medium OS not reached vs 27.6 months, P = .039) T315I mutations. The median RFS between the ponatinib group and the dasatinib group with T315I was not reached and 16.2 months, P = .065. The median RFS between the ponatinib group and the dasatinib group without T315I was not reached and 16.2 months, P = .036. No treatment-related deaths were observed during the therapy. Conclusion (1) Ph-positive CNSL patients seemed to have a high rate of response and postinduction MRD negativity with ponatinib and dasatinib, but ponatinib seemed to show a shorter time to achieve remission than dasatinib. (2) Ponatinib maintenance treatment might show superior survival for Ph-positive CNSL patients with or without the T315I mutation. (3) Ponatinib and dasatinib seemed to be both safe for the clinical application of Ph-positive CNSL.

Summary: Aberrant minichromosome maintenance (MCM) expression is associated with tumorigenesis. Here, we performed immunohistochemistry integrated with digital pathology to identify MCM2/5/6 expression in 130 neuroblastoma patients. A risk score was established using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator that predicts outcomes according to MCM2 expression, age, and the International Neuroblastoma Staging System in the Therapeutically Applicable Research to Generate Effective Treatments (TARGET) dataset (n = 150), where the patients with high risk had significantly worse prognosis that was validated in a hospital-based cohort (n = 130). After multivariable adjustment, the risk model remained an independent factor for survival in the TARGET cohort (overall survival [OS]: hazard ratio [HR] 2.3, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.4–4.0; event-free survival [EFS]: HR 1.8, 95% CI 1.1–3.1) and for OS in the validation cohort (HR 8.3, 95% CI 1.6–44.5). The ESTIMATE indicates that the risk model is negatively correlated with low ESTIMATE and stromal scores. These findings show the additive nature of this score, fostering its future implementation with new prognostic variables.

The recurrence and metastasis of children with mediastinal neuroblastoma (NB) are also occurred after surgery, chemotherapy, or radiotherapy. Strategies targeting the tumor microenvironment have been reported to improve survival; however, thorough investigations of monocytes and tumor-associated macrophages (Mϕs) with specialized functions in NB are still lacking. Our data first demonstrated polypyrimidine tract binding protein 2 (PTBP2) as a possible identifier in patients with mediastinal NB screened by proteomic profiling and that PTBP2 predicted good outcomes. Functional studies revealed that PTBP2 in NB cells induced the chemotactic activity and repolarization of tumor-associated monocytes and Mϕs, which, in turn, inhibited NB growth and dissemination. Mechanistically, PTBP2 prevents interferon regulatory factor 9 alternative splicing and upregulates signal transducers and activators of transcription 1 to stimulate C-C motif chemokine ligand 5 (CCL5) and interferon-stimulated gene factor-dependent type I interferon secretion, to induce monocyte/Mϕs chemotaxis, and to sustain monocytes in a proinflammatory phenotype. Our study defined a critical event of PTBP2-induced monocytes/Mϕs in NB progression and revealed that RNA splicing occurred by PTBP2 benefits immune compartmentalization between NB cells and monocytes. This work revealed the pathological and biological role of PTBP2 in NB development and indicates that PTBP2-induced RNA splicing benefits immune compartmentalization and predicted a favorable prognosis in mediastinal NB.

Knowledge mapping of medicinal plants enable ordinary people to differentiate between medicinal plants and learn their pharmacological effects, provide assistances and instructions to medical workers during the use of medicinal plants, and support intelligent queries of the properties of traditional medicinal plants. This paper innovatively introduces artificial neural network to the knowledge mapping of medicinal plants, and provides a practical and valuable reference for scientific development and reasonable use of medicinal plants. Firstly, the entity relationships were designed for medical knowledge map, and the definitions, scales, and examples were given for each type of data in the proposed knowledge map of medicinal plants. Next, the authors detailed the ideas of multi-source knowledge fusion, and the acquisition and storage strategies for entity information of medicinal plants. Then, the attention-based bidirectional gated recurrent network was combined with convolutional neural network to detect the genetic relationships between medicinal plants from the angles of semantics and texts. Finally, this paper explains the semantic retrieval algorithm for medicinal plants, and visualizes the knowledge map. The proposed model and semantic retrieval algorithm were proved effective and superior through experiments. It is concluded that: The smaller the batch size, the higher the recognition accuracy of plant entities, and the better the recognition effect. The research findings provide a reference for knowledge mapping in other fields.

Abstract RNA modification plays a crucial role in many biological functions, and its abnormal regulation is associated with the progression of cancer. Among them, N6-methyladenine (m6A) is the most abundant RNA modification. Methyltransferase-like 14 (METTL14) is the central component of the m6A methylated transferase complex, which is involved in the dynamic reversible process of m6A modification. METTL14 acts as both an oncogene and tumor suppressor gene to regulate the occurrence and development of various cancers. The abnormal m6A level induced by METTL14 is related to tumorigenesis, proliferation, metastasis, and invasion. To date, the molecular mechanism of METTL14 in various malignant tumors has not been fully studied. In this paper, we systematically summarize the latest research progress on METTL14 as a new biomarker for cancer diagnosis and its biological function in human tumors and discuss its potential clinical application. This study aims to provide new ideas for targeted therapy and improved prognoses in cancer.

Abstract Background Because of dismal prognosis in gastric cancer, identifying relevant prognostic factors is necessary. Phosphoserine phosphatase (PSPH) exhibits different expression patterns in many cancers and has been reported to affect the prognosis of patients with cancer. In this study, we examined the prognostic role of metabolic gene PSPH in gastric cancer based on the TCGA dataset and our hospital–based cohort cases. Methods We collected and analysed RNA-seq data of Pan-cancer and gastric cancer in the TCGA dataset and PSPH expression data obtained from immunohistochemical analysis of 243 patients with gastric cancer from Sun Yat-sen University cancer center. Further, Kaplan–Meier survival analysis and Cox analysis were used to assess the effect of PSPH on prognosis. The ESTIMATE and Cibersort algorithms were used to elucidate the relationship between PSPH and the abundance of immune cells using the TCGA dataset. Results We observed that PSPH expression displayed considerably high in gastric cancer and it was significantly associated with inferior prognosis (P = 0.043). Background: This study aimed to investigate the natural growth history of peripheral small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) using CT imaging. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted on 27 patients with peripheral SCLC who underwent at least two CT scans. Two methods were used: Method 1 involved direct measurement of nodule dimensions using a calliper, while Method 2 involved tumour lesion segmentation and voxel volume calculation using the “py-radiomics” package in Python. Agreement between the two methods was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Volume doubling time (VDT) and growth rate (GR) were used as evaluation indices for SCLC growth, and growth distribution based on GR and volume measurements were depicted. We collected potential factors related to imaging VDT and performed a differential analysis. Patients were classified into slow-growing and fast-growing groups based on a VDT cut-off point of 60 days, and univariate analysis was used to identify factors influencing VDT. Results: Median VDT calculated by the two methods were 61 days and 71 days, respectively, with strong agreement. All patients had continuously growing tumours, and none had tumours that decreased in size or remained unchanged. Eight patients showed possible growth patterns, with six possibly exhibiting exponential growth and two possibly showing Gompertzian growth. Tumours deeper in the lung grew faster than those adjacent to the pleura. Conclusions: Peripheral SCLC tumours grow rapidly and continuously without periods of nongrowth or regression. Tumours located deeper in the lung tend to grow faster, but further research is needed to confirm this finding.

Abstract In recent years, pursuing a high evaporation rate of solar steam generation (SSG) has been the focus of research for relieving the freshwater shortage. Scientists struggled to find perfect photothermal materials while the importance of substrate during the steam generation was often overlooked. Therefore, in this work, an aerogel substrate composed of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (CS) has been designed for solar steam generation. The compounded aerogels synthesized via freeze‐drying method not only retain the inherent characteristics of lightweight, porosity, and high specific surface area, but also inherit the advantages of PVA in water lock effect as well as CS in moisture absorption. The obtained PVA/CS/CuO aerogel coupling with high light absorption of CuO exhibited excellent steam generation capabilities, largely benefited from the superiority of the aerogel substrate. Under 1 sun solar illumination (1 kW m–2), it realized an evaporation rate as high as 2.14 Kg m–2 h–1, which is superior to recently reported semiconductor solar evaporation system. The solar‐to‐vapor energy conversion efficiency of 87.1% is obtained. Due to the versatility of CuO, PVA/CS/CuO aerogel not only has excellent light‐to‐heat conversion performance, but also has good effects in antibacterial.

Abstract Background This retrospective study aimed to determine the epidemiological features of deaths caused by unintentional suffocation among infants in China. Methods The data used in this study were obtained from China’s Under 5 Child Mortality Surveillance System (U5CMSS) from October 1, 2015, to September 30, 2016. A total of 377 children under 1 year of age who died from unintentional suffocation were included in the survey. Primary caregivers were interviewed individually using the Unintentional Suffocation Mortality among Children under 5 Questionnaire. EpiData was used to establish the database, and the results were analysed using SPSS 22.0. Results Most (85.9%) unintentional infant suffocations occurred in rural areas, and 67.5% occurred in infants 0 to 3 months old. Among the primary caregivers of the infants, most (82.7%) had a junior middle school education or below, and 83.1% of them lacked unintentional suffocation first aid skills. Of the 377 unintentional suffocated-infant deaths, the causes of death were accidental suffocation and strangulation in bed (ASSB) (193, 51.2%), inhalation suffocation (154, 40.8%), other unintentional suffocation (6, 1.6%), and unknown (24, 6.4%). Among the infant deaths due to ASSB, overlaying (88.6%) was the most frequently reported circumstance. A total of 93.8% of cases reported occurred during co-sleeping/bed sharing with parents, and in 72.8% of the cases, the infants were covered with the same quilt as their parents. In our study, most inhalation suffocation deaths (88.3%) involved liquid food (such as breast milk and formula milk). A total of 80.5% of infant deaths reportedly occurred after eating; in 28.2% of those cases, the infants were held upright and patted by their caregivers, and 57.2% of them were laid down to sleep immediately after eating. Conclusions To reduce the occurrence of unintentional suffocation, local government should strengthen knowledge and awareness of unintentional suffocation prevention and safety among parents and caregivers. Additionally, health care providers should educate parents and caregivers about safety issues of unintentional suffocation, and relevant policies should be introduced to provide environments and activities that reduce the risk of suffocation, such as promoting the Safe to Sleep Campaign. It is important to enhance the focus on infant unintentional suffocation as a health issue.

ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aimed to develop a minimally invasive surgical procedure for laminar lift and posterior cervical laminoplasty via the intermuscular approach using a canine model. Methods: Six Alaskan dogs were used for developing the surgical approach. The bilateral laminae of C3-7 were cut with an ultrasonic osteotome and fixed with bilateral plates to maintain the lamina lifting and reshape a wider spinal canal. The important structures, such as ligaments, supraspinous ligaments, interspinous ligaments, and ligamentum flavum were preserved. The therapeutic effect was evaluated by preoperative and postoperative imaging results and neck mobility. Results: The surgical procedures were all successfully performed in the 6 animals. All the dogs survived well within 1 year of postoperative follow-up. The postoperative neck mobility was as good as the preoperative one. Computed tomography results showed that the anteroposterior diameter of the spinal canal was successfully enlarged and maintained well. Conclusions: The minimally invasive surgical procedure for laminar lift and posterior cervical laminoplasty via the intermuscular approach was feasible in a canine model, which might be applied in clinical practice.

Abstract backgroundOsteofibrous dysplasia-like adamantinoma (OFD-like adamantinoma), classical adamantinoma and dedifferentiated adamantinoma were previously considered to be three subtypes of adamantinoma of long bones. In the 5th edition of the World Health Organization (WHO) classification of bone tumors in 2020, OFD-like adamantinoma was newly proposed and classified as an intermediate-locally aggressive tumor in other mesenchymal tumors of bone. OFD-like adamantinoma is rare, accounting for only 0.4% of all primary bone tumors. OFD-like adamantinoma is often misdiagnosed due to the insufficient understanding of it. Here we report a case of OFD-like adamantinoma treated in our hospital with a literature review.Case presentationThe patient, a 14-year-old male, had swelling in his right leg with intermittent pain for one year. Plain radiography, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed. Based on the radiological and histological examinations, a diagnosis of OFD-like adamantinoma was suspected. After admission, the patient underwent tumor resection of the right tibia, free transplantation of the left fibula and internal fixation. After resection of the tumor, the wound recovered well, the vital signs were stable, and activity was normal. The patient has been followed up for more than a year with no recurrence or distant metastasis.ConclusionOFD-like adamantinoma is a rare primary bone tumor with nonspecific clinical features. Imaging examination can demonstrate the lesion and help diagnosis. The pathological discovery of epithelioid tissue is the key evidence for diagnosis.
