We present light curves and classification spectra of 17 hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe) from the Pan-STARRS1 Medium Deep Survey (PS1 MDS). Our sample contains all objects from the PS1 MDS sample with spectroscopic classification that are similar to either of the prototypes SN2005ap or SN2007bi, without an explicit limit on luminosity. With a redshift range $0.3 < z < 1.6$, PS1MDS is the first SLSN sample primarily probing the high-redshift population; our multi-filter PS1 light curves probe the rest-frame UV emission, and hence the peak of the spectral energy distribution. We measure the temperature evolution and construct bolometric light curves, and find peak luminosities of $(0.5-5) \times 10^{44}$ erg s$^{-1}$ and lower limits on the total radiated energies of $(0.3-2) \times 10^{51}$ erg. The light curve shapes are diverse, with both rise- and decline times spanning a factor of $\sim 5$, and several examples of double-peaked light curves. When correcting for the flux-limited nature of our survey, we find a median peak luminosity at 4000 {\AA} of $M_{\rm 4000} = -21.1$ mag, and a spread of $\sigma = 0.7$ mag., Comment: Matches published version. [Abridged] We present a search for fast optical transients (~0.5 hr-1 day) using repeated observations of the Pan-STARRS1 Medium-Deep Survey (PS1/MDS) fields. Our search takes advantage of the consecutive g/r-band observations (16.5 min in each filter), by requiring detections in both bands, with non-detections on preceding and subsequent nights. We identify 19 transients brighter than 22.5 AB mag (S/N>10). Of these, 11 events exhibit quiescent counterparts in the deep PS1/MDS templates that we identify as M4-M9 dwarfs. The remaining 8 transients exhibit a range of properties indicative of main-belt asteroids near the stationary point of their orbits. With identifications for all 19 transients, we place an upper limit of R_FOT(0.5hr)<0.12 deg^-2 d^-1 (95% confidence level) on the sky-projected rate of extragalactic fast transients at <22.5 mag, a factor of 30-50 times lower than previous limits; the limit for a timescale of ~day is R_FOT<2.4e-3 deg^-2 d^-1. To convert these sky-projected rates to volumetric rates, we explore the expected peak luminosities of fast optical transients powered by various mechanisms, and find that non-relativistic events are limited to M~-10 mag (M~-14 mag) for a timescale of ~0.5 hr (~day), while relativistic sources (e.g., GRBs, magnetar-powered transients) can reach much larger luminosities. The resulting volumetric rates are <13 (M~-10 mag), <0.05 (M~-14 mag) and <1e-6 Mpc^-3 yr^-1 (M~-24 mag), significantly above the nova, supernova, and GRB rates, respectively, indicating that much larger surveys are required to provide meaningful constraints. Motivated by the results of our search we discuss strategies for identifying fast optical transients in the LSST main survey, and reach the optimistic conclusion that the veil of foreground contaminants can be lifted with the survey data, without the need for expensive follow-up observations., Comment: Submitted to ApJ; 13 pages (emulateapj style), 8 figures, 3 tables

[Abridged] We present optical and NIR observations of 19 short GRB host galaxies, aimed at measuring their stellar masses and population ages. The goals of this study are to evaluate whether short GRBs track the stellar mass distribution of galaxies, to investigate the progenitor delay time distribution, and to explore any connection between long and short GRB progenitors. Using single stellar population models we infer masses of log(M/M_sun)=8.8-11.6 and population ages of tau=0.03-4.4 Gyr. We further infer maximal masses of log(M/M_sun)=9.7-11.9 by assuming stellar population ages equal to the age of the universe at each host's redshift. Comparing the distribution of stellar masses to the general galaxy mass function we find that short GRBs track the cosmic stellar mass distribution only if the late-type hosts generally have maximal masses. However, there is an apparent dearth of early-type hosts compared to the equal contribution of early- and late-type galaxies to the cosmic stellar mass budget. These results suggest that stellar mass may not be the sole parameter controlling the short GRB rate, and raise the possibility of a two-component model with both mass and star formation playing a role. If short GRBs in late-type galaxies indeed track the star formation activity, the resulting typical delay time is ~0.2 Gyr, while those in early-type hosts have a typical delay of ~3 Gyr. Using the same stellar population models we fit the data for 22 long GRB hosts and find that they have lower masses and younger population ages, with =9.1 and =0.06 Gyr, respectively; their maximal masses are similarly lower, =9.6. Most importantly, the two host populations remain distinct even if we consider only the star-forming hosts of short GRBs, supporting our previous findings that the progenitors of long GRBs and short GRBs in late-type galaxies are distinct., Comment: Submitted to ApJ; 20 pages, 3 tables, 8 figures
