We numerically and experimentally investigate an on-chip solution to reduce the thermal crosstalk in indium phosphide-based photonic integrated circuits. We introduce deep trenches, fabricated through wet etch, between active and passive components. The current injected in active components and the geometry of the trenches are the parameters considered in our analysis. The trenches thermally isolate the passive components from the heat generated by active components. The thermal crosstalk is quantified by measuring the effects on the electro-optical response of an MZ modulator considered as a test structure. The heat sources are represented by semiconductor optical amplifiers placed at different distances with respect to the position of the MZ. Our experiments show how both the geometry and the position of the trenches, play a role in the reduction of the thermal crosstalk. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

We demonstrate dispersion compensation for highly chirped optical pulses with an ultracompact optical pulse shaper. The device integrates a 20-channel arrayed waveguide grating with 20 phase modulators and 20 semiconductor optical amplifiers on a single chip of 6\,\times\,6 mm^2. All-optical regeneration has attracted growing interest due to the possibility to increase the all-optical reach. However, to be really competitive with optoelectronic regenerators, all-optical regenerators should process an entire wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal comb at once and significantly reduce the footprint and the power consumption, as possible, in principle, by exploiting photonic-integrated circuits (PICs). Moreover, since constant envelope modulation format signals have come into play in recent years, all-optical regenerators dealing with a multiplex of these signals are of particular interest. This paper presents a monolithically integrated indium-phosphide-based PIC acting as an all-optical regenerator for constant envelope WDM signals. The regeneration scheme is based on hard-limiting amplification in saturated semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs), which removes the signal intensity noise. The presented PIC, designed and fabricated within the JePPIX technology platform, can handle up to four WDM signals, which are demultiplexed and enter an array of SOAs to undergo regeneration before being multiplexed again. The channel-by-channel regeneration of both polarization shift keying and frequency shift keying signals at 10 Gb/s is experimentally demonstrated in terms of Q-factor improvement. In this paper, we present the design and characterization of a monolithically integrated tunable laser for optical coherence tomography in medicine. This laser is the first monolithic photonic integrated circuit containing quantum-dot amplifiers, phase modulators, and passive components. We demonstrate electro-optical tuning capabilities over 60 nm between 1685 and 1745 nm, which is the largest tuning range demonstrated for an arrayed waveguide grating controlled tunable laser. Furthermore, it demonstrates that the active-passive integration technology designed for the 1550 nm telecom wavelength region can also be used in the 1600–1800 nm region. The tunable laser has a 0.11 nm effective linewidth and an approximately 0.1 mW output power. Scanning capabilities of the laser are demonstrated in a free space Michelson interferometer setup where the laser is scanned over the 60 nm in 4000 steps with a 500 Hz scan frequency. Switching between two wavelengths within this 60 nm range is demonstrated to be possible within 500 ns. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

In this letter, we demonstrate an InP-based photonic multiwavelength transmitter realized by integrating an array of distributed Bragg reflector lasers with modulators in Mach–Zehnder configuration. An arrayed waveguide grating is used to multiplex the generated signals into a common optical output. The device is designed according to a generic integration concept, using standardized building blocks, and is fabricated in a multiproject wafer run. The device delivers up to 4 dBm of optical power into the fiber with a modulation data rate of 12.5 Gbps per transmission channel. The obtained performance makes it very promising for application in the next generation optical access networks as a key source in the central office part of the telecommunication systems. We experimentally and theoretically investigate the stability of a single-mode integrated filtered-feedback laser as a function of the electrically controlled feedback phase. We interpret the measurements in terms of feedback-induced dynamics, compare them with the results from a stability analysis model for conventional feedback, and find good qualitative agreement.

Earlier it was observed that polarization rotation in an AWG built from birefringent waveguides can result in sidelobes in its response. This effect was measured in a polarization sensitive AWG with an orthogonal layout. Now we investigate through detailed simulation whether this effect also exists in polarization desensitised AWGs. It is shown that a dispersion compensated AWG does not suffer from a polarization sidelobe. Alternatively, the AWG can be designed to minimize polarization rotation to suppress the sidelobe.
