Abstract Aspects of the acute experience induced by the serotonergic psychedelic psilocybin predict symptomatic relief in multiple psychiatric disorders and improved well-being in healthy participants, but whether these therapeutic effects are immediate or are based on memories of the experience is unclear. To examine this, we co-administered psilocybin (25 mg) with the amnestic benzodiazepine midazolam in 8 healthy participants and assayed the subjective quality of, and memory for, the dosing-day experience. We identified a midazolam dose that allowed a conscious psychedelic experience to occur while partially impairing memory for the experience. Furthermore, midazolam dose and memory impairment tended to associate inversely with salience, insight, and well-being induced by psilocybin. These data suggest a role for memory in therapeutically relevant behavioral effects occasioned by psilocybin. Because midazolam blocks memory by blocking cortical neural plasticity, it may also be useful for evaluating the contribution of the pro-neuroplastic properties of psychedelics to their therapeutic activity.

Background: We aimed to assess perioperative changes in fibrinogen in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), their association with markers of blood–brain barrier breakdown and neuroinflammation, and their association with postoperative delirium severity. Methods: We conducted a secondary analysis of the Interventions for Postoperative Delirium-Biomarker 2 (IPOD-B2, NCT02926417) study, a prospective observational cohort study. We included 24 patients aged >21 yr undergoing aortic aneurysm repair. CSF samples were obtained before (n=24) and after surgery (n=13), with some participants having multiple postoperative samples. γ-Aminobutyric acid type A receptors that incorporate α5 subunits (α5-GABAARs) are highly enriched in the hippocampus and are strongly implicated in control of learning and memory. Receptors located on pyramidal neuron dendrites have long been considered responsible, but here we report that mice in which α5-GABAARs have been eliminated from pyramidal neurons (α5-pyr-KO) continue to form strong spatial engrams and that they remain as sensitive as their pseudo-wild-type (p-WT) littermates to etomidate-induced suppression of place cells and spatial engrams. By contrast, mice with selective knockout in interneurons (α5-i-KO) no longer exhibit etomidate-induced suppression of place cells. In addition, the strength of spatial engrams is lower in α5-i-KO mice than p-WT littermates under control conditions. Consistent with the established role of the hippocampus in contextual fear conditioning, α5-i-KO mice resisted etomidate's suppression of freezing to context, but so too did α5-pyr-KO mice, supporting a role for extra-hippocampal regions in the development of contextual fear memory. Overall, our results indicate that interneuronal α5-GABAARs serve a physiological role in promoting spatial learning and that they mediate suppression of hippocampus-dependent contextual memory by etomidate.

Summary: In an era of ‘big data’, we propose that a collaborative network approach will drive a better understanding of the mechanisms of delirium, and more rapid development of therapies. We have formed the International Delirium Pathophysiology & Electrophysiology Network for Data sharing (iDEPEND) group with a key aim to ‘facilitate the study of delirium pathogenesis with electrophysiology, imaging, and biomarkers including data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation’. Our initial focus is on studies of electrophysiology as we anticipate this methodology has great potential to enhance our understanding of delirium. Our article describes this principle and is used to highlight the endeavour to the wider community as we establish key stakeholders and partnerships.

BackgroundCognitive impairment is a clinically important feature of schizophrenia. Polygenic risk score (PRS) methods have demonstrated genetic overlap between schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD), educational attainment (EA), and IQ, but very few studies have examined associations between these PRS and cognitive phenotypes within schizophrenia cases.MethodsWe combined genetic and cognitive data in 3034 schizophrenia cases from 11 samples using the general intelligence factor g as the primary measure of cognition. We used linear regression to examine the association between cognition and PRS for EA, IQ, schizophrenia, BD, and MDD. The results were then meta-analyzed across all samples. A genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of cognition was conducted in schizophrenia cases.ResultsPRS for both population IQ (P = 4.39 × 10-28) and EA (P = 1.27 × 10-26) were positively correlated with cognition in those with schizophrenia. In contrast, there was no association between cognition in schizophrenia cases and PRS for schizophrenia (P = .39), BD (P = .51), or MDD (P = .49). No individual variant approached genome-wide significance in the GWAS.ConclusionsCognition in schizophrenia cases is more strongly associated with PRS that index cognitive traits in the general population than PRS for neuropsychiatric disorders. This suggests the mechanisms of cognitive variation within schizophrenia are at least partly independent from those that predispose to schizophrenia diagnosis itself. Our findings indicate that this cognitive variation arises at least in part due to genetic factors shared with cognitive performance in populations and is not solely due to illness or treatment-related factors, although our findings are consistent with important contributions from these factors.

The clock and calendar regulate many library activities, but the seasonal and temporal dimensions of libraries are largely unexplored. Intrigued by observations of colleagues' temporal attitudes and behavior, the authors drew on the work of sociologist Eviatar Zerubavel to investigate the perceptions of time, schedules, and urgency among professional library personnel. The data showed almost no statistically significant relationships between demographic categories and the employee's approach to time; however, multiple significant relationships existed between the latter and the employee's department. These findings can help academic librarians understand--and bridge--differences among themselves to build more vigorous organizations.

This descriptive study examined patient characteristics, treatment characteristics, and short-term outcomes among patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) in routine clinical care. Results for patients receiving full-time treatment were contrasted with results for patients receiving ambulatory treatment. Data of a clinical trial including 116 female patients (18-35 years) diagnosed with AN or BN were subjected to secondary analyses. Patients were voluntarily admitted to one of nine treatment facilities in Germany and Switzerland. Patients received cognitive-behavioral interventions in accordance with the national clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of EDs under routine clinical care conditions, either as full-time treatment or ambulatory treatment. Assessments were conducted after admission and three months later. Assessments included a clinician-administered diagnostic interview (DIPS), body-mass-index (BMI), ED pathology (EDE-Q), depressive symptoms (BDI-II), symptoms of anxiety (BAI), and somatic symptoms (SOMS). Findings showed that treatment intensity differed largely by setting and site, partly due to national health insurance policies. Patients with AN in full-time treatment received on average 65 psychotherapeutic sessions and patients with BN in full-time treatment received on average 38 sessions within three months. In comparison, patients with AN or BN in ambulatory treatment received 8-9 sessions within the same time. Full-time treatment was associated with substantial improvements on all measured variables for both women with AN (d = .48-.83) and BN (d = .48-.81). Despite the relatively small amount of psychotherapeutic sessions, ambulatory treatment was associated with small increases in BMI (d = .37) among women with AN and small improvements on all measured variables among women with BN (d = .27-.43). For women with AN, reduction in ED pathology were positively related to the number of psychotherapeutic sessions received. Regardless of diagnosis and treatment setting, full recovery of symptoms was rarely achieved within three months (recovery rates ranged between 0 and 4.4%). The present study shows that a considerable amount of patients with EDs improved after CBT-based ED treatment in routine clinical care within three months after admission. Intensive full-time treatment may be particularly effective in quickly improving ED-related pathology, although full remission of symptoms is typically not achieved. A small amount of ambulatory sessions may already produce considerable improvements in BN pathology and weight gain among women with AN. As patient characteristics and treatment intensity differed largely between settings, results should not be interpreted as superiority of one treatment setting over another. Furthermore, this study shows that treatment intensity is quite heterogeneous, indicating the possibility for increasing effectiveness in the treatment of EDs in routine clinical care.

En este texto presentamos algunas notas para la construcción de un panorama de la enseñanza de Paleografía en Brasil —tema muy poco tratado en textos científicos nacionales— tanto a nivel de grado y posgrado como en cursos libres, conocidos comúnmente como talleres de Paleografía. Además, debido a la ausencia de bibliografía específica sobre la enseñanza de Paleografía en portugués, nuestro objetivo será también fomentar la divulgación de métodos extranjeros, de poca circulación en Brasil. Finalmente, a partir de un análisis de talleres presenciales de Paleografía, elaboramos una propuesta sobre metodologías de lectura de textos manuscritos.

Background: Perioperative inflammation is associated with perioperative complications, including delirium, that are associated with a reduced number of postoperative days alive and at home at 90 days (DAH90). We tested whether inflammation was associated with DAH90 even when adjusting for perioperative factors, and whether inflammation independently was associated with DAH90 when adjusting for delirium. Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study of major, non-intracranial surgical patients who were older than 65 yr (n=134). We measured postoperative delirium incidence and severity, and changes in interleukin (IL)-8 and IL-10 in blood plasma. Our primary outcome, DAH90, was analysed using quantile regression. Results: Before adjusting for delirium, a postoperative day 1 increased IL-8 was associated with fewer DAH90 at the 0.75 quantile (β=–0.082; 95% confidence interval [CI], –0.19 to –0.006) after adjusting for demographic (age and sex) and perioperative factors (cardiovascular surgery, National Surgical Quality Improvement Program risk of death, and operative time). IL-10 was similarly associated with DAH90 at the 0.5 (β=–0.026; 95% CI, –0.19 to –0.001) and 0.75 (β= –0.035; 95% CI, –0.07 to –0.006) quantiles. Neither cytokine was significantly associated with DAH90 once delirium and baseline Trail Making Test B were added to the models. Conclusions: Perioperative inflammation predicts DAH90, but when delirium is added to the model inflammation loses significance as a predictor, whereas delirium is significant. Targeting perioperative inflammation may reduce delirium and moderate hospital readmission and mortality. Clinical trial registration: NCT03124303.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar la distribución de las estrategias de realización del objeto directo anafórico de tercera persona del español en términos de frecuencia de uso. La muestra de habla está compuesta por 19 entrevistas semidirigidas grabadas en 2015 en Oberá-Misiones (Argentina). El análisis cuantitativo demuestra que el marco de estrategias incluye los pronombres clíticos lo(s)/la(s), además del pronombre le(s) y del cero morfológico. La selección de las estrategias en variación es determinada, sobre todo, por la animacidad del referente y la escolaridad del hablante. La investigación nos permite concluir que el cuadro de estrategias observado indica un panorama de variación estable, ya que le(s) y cero se distribuyen obedeciendo a factores internos y, por lo tanto, no son sensibles al factor edad.

No espanhol, a posse, na 3ª pessoa, pode ser expressa por pronomes possessivos simples como su(s), suyo(s)/a(s), assim como por formas perifrásticas como de él, de ellos, de ella e de ellas. Além de características morfológicas e sintáticas distintas, há também diferenças entre formas simples e perifrásticas no que se refere à recuperação do possuidor. Os possessivos simples são formas opacas morfologicamente às informações de número e de pessoa do possuidor, pois não só servem ao quadro pronominal da 3ª pessoa (él, ellos, ella, ellas), mas, também, ao quadro pronominal de 2ª pessoa de cortesia (usted, ustedes). Os possessivos perifrásticos, por sua vez, recuperam claramente o possuidor de 3ª pessoa (él, ellos, ella, ellas). Essa opacidade morfológica no quadro das formas simples de 3ª pessoa é usualmente utilizada para justificar o uso das formas perifrásticas. Nesse sentido, o presente trabalho investiga a variação entre possessivos simples e perifrásticos de 3ª pessoa no espanhol, com base em amostras de fala disponíveis no corpus Macrocorpus e em uma perspectiva teórico-metodológica sociolinguística de base laboviana (WEINREICH; LABOV; HERZOG, 1968; LABOV, 1972; 1974).

Studies have shown that people with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD) have impairments in spatial working memory (SWM) performance. However, it remains unclear whether this deficit represents a cognitive endophenotype preceding symptoms or a correlate of OCD. We investigated SWM in 69 people with OCD, 77 unaffected first-degree relatives of people with OCD and 106 healthy control participants. Taking age effects into account, SWM performance was best in healthy controls, intermediate in relatives and worst in OCD participants. However, since performance did not differ significantly between healthy controls and relatives, our study does not fully support SWM performance as a core cognitive endophenotype of OCD.

ObjectiveObsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette's syndrome are highly heritable neurodevelopmental disorders that are thought to share genetic risk factors. However, the identification of definitive susceptibility genes for these etiologically complex disorders remains elusive. The authors report a combined genome-wide association study (GWAS) of Tourette's syndrome and OCD.MethodThe authors conducted a GWAS in 2,723 cases (1,310 with OCD, 834 with Tourette's syndrome, 579 with OCD plus Tourette's syndrome/chronic tics), 5,667 ancestry-matched controls, and 290 OCD parent-child trios. GWAS summary statistics were examined for enrichment of functional variants associated with gene expression levels in brain regions. Polygenic score analyses were conducted to investigate the genetic architecture within and across the two disorders.ResultsAlthough no individual single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) achieved genome-wide significance, the GWAS signals were enriched for SNPs strongly associated with variations in brain gene expression levels (expression quantitative loci, or eQTLs), suggesting the presence of true functional variants that contribute to risk of these disorders. Polygenic score analyses identified a significant polygenic component for OCD (p=2×10(-4)), predicting 3.2% of the phenotypic variance in an independent data set. In contrast, Tourette's syndrome had a smaller, nonsignificant polygenic component, predicting only 0.6% of the phenotypic variance (p=0.06). No significant polygenic signal was detected across the two disorders, although the sample is likely underpowered to detect a modest shared signal. Furthermore, the OCD polygenic signal was significantly attenuated when cases with both OCD and co-occurring Tourette's syndrome/chronic tics were included in the analysis (p=0.01).ConclusionsPrevious work has shown that Tourette's syndrome and OCD have some degree of shared genetic variation. However, the data from this study suggest that there are also distinct components to the genetic architectures of these two disorders. Furthermore, OCD with co-occurring Tourette's syndrome/chronic tics may have different underlying genetic susceptibility compared with OCD alone.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a severe and debilitating neuropsychiatric disorder with an estimated heritability of ~80%. Recently, de novo mutations, identified by next-generation sequencing (NGS) technology, have been suggested to contribute to the risk of developing SCZ. Although these studies show an overall excess of de novo mutations among patients compared with controls, it is not easy to pinpoint specific genes hit by de novo mutations as actually involved in the disease process. Importantly, support for a specific gene can be provided by the identification of additional alterations in several independent patients. We took advantage of existing genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphism data sets to screen for deletions or duplications (copy number variations, CNVs) in genes previously implicated by NGS studies. Our approach was based on the observation that CNVs constitute part of the mutational spectrum in many human disease-associated genes. In a discovery step, we investigated whether CNVs in 55 candidate genes, suggested from NGS studies, were more frequent among 1637 patients compared with 1627 controls. Duplications in RB1CC1 were overrepresented among patients. This finding was followed-up in large, independent European sample sets. In the combined analysis, totaling 8461 patients and 112 871 controls, duplications in RB1CC1 were found to be associated with SCZ (P=1.29 × 10(-5); odds ratio=8.58). Our study provides evidence for rare duplications in RB1CC1 as a risk factor for SCZ.

The direct estimation of heritability from genome-wide common variant data as implemented in the program Genome-wide Complex Trait Analysis (GCTA) has provided a means to quantify heritability attributable to all interrogated variants. We have quantified the variance in liability to disease explained by all SNPs for two phenotypically-related neurobehavioral disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette Syndrome (TS), using GCTA. Our analysis yielded a heritability point estimate of 0.58 (se = 0.09, p = 5.64e-12) for TS, and 0.37 (se = 0.07, p = 1.5e-07) for OCD. In addition, we conducted multiple genomic partitioning analyses to identify genomic elements that concentrate this heritability. We examined genomic architectures of TS and OCD by chromosome, MAF bin, and functional annotations. In addition, we assessed heritability for early onset and adult onset OCD. Among other notable results, we found that SNPs with a minor allele frequency of less than 5% accounted for 21% of the TS heritability and 0% of the OCD heritability. Additionally, we identified a significant contribution to TS and OCD heritability by variants significantly associated with gene expression in two regions of the brain (parietal cortex and cerebellum) for which we had available expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs). Finally we analyzed the genetic correlation between TS and OCD, revealing a genetic correlation of 0.41 (se = 0.15, p = 0.002). These results are very close to previous heritability estimates for TS and OCD based on twin and family studies, suggesting that very little, if any, heritability is truly missing (i.e., unassayed) from TS and OCD GWAS studies of common variation. The results also indicate that there is some genetic overlap between these two phenotypically-related neuropsychiatric disorders, but suggest that the two disorders have distinct genetic architectures.

INTRODUCTION: Post‐operative delirium (POD) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality but is bereft of treatments, largely due to our limited understanding of the underlying pathophysiology. We hypothesized that delirium reflects a disturbance in cortical connectivity that leads to altered predictions of the sensory environment. METHODS: High‐density electroencephalogram recordings during an oddball auditory roving paradigm were collected from 131 patients. Dynamic causal modeling (DCM) analysis facilitated inference about the neuronal connectivity and inhibition–excitation dynamics underlying auditory‐evoked responses. RESULTS: Mismatch negativity amplitudes were smaller in patients with POD. DCM showed that delirium was associated with decreased left‐sided superior temporal gyrus (l‐STG) to auditory cortex feedback connectivity. Feedback connectivity also negatively correlated with delirium severity and systemic inflammation. Increased inhibition of l‐STG, with consequent decreases in feed‐forward and feed‐back connectivity, occurred for oddball tones during delirium. DISCUSSION: Delirium is associated with decreased feedback cortical connectivity, possibly resulting from increased intrinsic inhibitory tone. Increasing evidence indicates that patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) exhibit alterations in fronto-striatal circuitry. Performance deficits in the antisaccade task would support this model, but results from previous small-scale studies have been inconclusive as either increased error rates, prolonged antisaccade latencies, both or neither have been reported in OCD patients. In order to address this issue, we investigated antisaccade performance in a large sample of OCD patients (n = 169) and matched control subjects (n = 183). As impaired antisaccade performance constitutes a potential endophenotype of OCD, unaffected first-degree relatives of OCD patients (n = 100) were assessed, as well. Furthermore, we conducted a quantitative meta-analysis to integrate our data with previous findings. In the empirical study, OCD patients exhibited significantly increased antisaccade latencies, intra-subject variability (ISV) of antisaccade latencies, and antisaccade error rates. The latter effect was driven by errors with express latency (80–130 ms), as patients did not differ significantly from controls with regards to regular errors (>130 ms). Notably, unaffected relatives of OCD patients showed elevated antisaccade express error rates and increased ISV of antisaccade latencies, as well. Antisaccade performance was not associated with state anxiety within groups. Among relatives, however, we observed a significant correlation between antisaccade error rate and harm avoidance. Medication status of OCD patients, symptom severity, depressive comorbidity, comorbid anxiety disorders and OCD symptom dimensions did not significantly affect antisaccade performance. Meta-analysis of 10 previous and the present empirical study yielded a medium-sized effect (SMD = 0.48, p < 0.001) for higher error rates in OCD patients, while the effect for latencies did not reach significance owing to strong heterogeneity (SMD = 0.51, p = 0.069). Our results support the assumption of impaired antisaccade performance in OCD, although effects sizes were only moderately large. Furthermore, we provide the first evidence that increased antisaccade express error rates and ISV of antisaccade latencies may constitute endophenotypes of OCD. Findings regarding these more detailed antisaccade parameters point to potentially underlying mechanisms, such as early pre-stimulus inhibition of the superior colliculus.

BACKGROUND:Difficulties in emotion regulation have been related to psychological and physiological stress responses such as lower mood and lower parasympathetic activation (HF-HRV) under resting condition, but evidence on the potential link to the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis functioning and to physiological stress responses during a stress task is still scarce. The aim of the study was to investigate stress responses in young women when confronted to a daily stressor such as exposure to thin ideals and to understand the role of correlates of self-reported trait-like emotion regulation difficulties (ERD). METHODS:Heart rate variability (HRV) and salivary cortisol data were collected in a sample of 273 young women aged 18-35 with and without mental disorders during a vivid imagination of thin ideals (experimental condition) or landscapes (control condition). Changes in mood states were measured on a visual analogue scale (0-100). Correlates of trait-like ERD were self-reported using the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS). RESULTS:Participants with higher ERD showed a stronger decline in self-reported mood after vivid imagination of thin ideals compared to participants with lower ERD in the experimental condition but also a stronger increase of positive mood with increasing ERD in the control condition. ERD were not related to baseline HF-HRV or baseline salivary cortisol levels nor to any physiological response during and after the imagination of thin ideals. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION:The results corroborate the role of ERD regarding the immediate psychological impact of daily stressors. Exposition to daily stressors in the laboratory results in discrepant psychological and physiological reactivity. Future studies should investigate under what conditions the complex interrelations between immediate and long-term ERD and biological activation are amenable to assessment in a laboratory setting. The additive effects of multiple exposition to stressors, such as thin ideals in daily life, also need to be addressed.

Thought-shape fusion (TSF) describes the experience of body-related cognitive distortions associated with eating disorder (ED) pathology. In the laboratory TSF has been activated by thoughts about fattening/forbidden foods and thin ideals. This study aims at validating a questionnaire to assess the trait susceptibility to TSF (i.e., body-related cognitive distortions) associated with the imagination of thin ideals, and developing an adapted version of the original TSF trait questionnaire, the Thought-Shape Fusion Body Questionnaire (TSF-B). Healthy control women (HC, n = 317) and women diagnosed with subthreshold and clinical EDs (n = 243) completed an online-questionnaire. The factor structure of the TSF-B questionnaire was examined using exploratory (EFA) and subsequent confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). EFA pointed to a two-factor solution, confirmed by CFA. Subscale 1 was named Imagination of thin ideals, containing five items referring to the imagination of female thin ideals. Subscale 2 was named Striving for own thin ideal, with seven items about pursuing/abandoning attempts to reach one’s own thin ideal. The total scale and both subscales showed good convergent validity, excellent reliability, and good ability to discriminate between individuals with subthreshold/clinical EDs and HCs. Results indicate that cognitive distortions are also related to the imagination of thin ideals, and are associated with ED pathology. With two subscales, the TSF-B trait questionnaire appropriately measures this construct. Future studies should clarify whether TSF-B is predictive for the development and course of EDs. Assessing cognitive distortions with the TSF-B questionnaire could improve understanding of EDs and stimulate the development of cognitively oriented interventions. It is currently unclear whether this results from grammatical phonological knowledge that actively recodes ill-formed structures, or from difficulty with their phonetic encoding. To examine this question, we gauge the effect of two types of tasks on the identification of onset clusters that are unattested in an individual's language. One type calls attention to global phonological structure by eliciting a syllable count (e.g., does "medif" include one syllable or two?). A second set of tasks promotes attention to local phonetic detail by requiring the detection of specific segments (e.g., does "medif" include an "e"?). Results from five experiments show that, when participants attend to global phonological structure, ill-formed onsets are misidentified (e.g., "mdif"[right arrow]"medif") relative to better-formed ones (e.g., "mlif"). In contrast, when people attend to local phonetic detail, they identify ill-formed onsets as well as better-formed ones, and they are highly sensitive to non-distinctive phonetic cues. These findings suggest that misidentifications reflect active recoding based on broad phonological knowledge, rather than passive failures to extract acoustic surface forms. Although the perceptual interface could shape such knowledge, the relationship between language and misidentification is a two-way street. (Contains 8 figures, 1 table and 2 notes.)

Across languages, onsets with large sonority distances are preferred to those with smaller distances (e.g., "bw greater than bd greater than lb"; Greenberg 1978). Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 2004) attributes such facts to grammatical restrictions that are universally active in all grammars. To test this hypothesis, here we examine whether children extend putatively universal sonority restrictions to onsets unattested in their language. Participants (M = 4;03) were presented with pairs of auditory words--either identical (e.g., "lbif [right arrow] lbif") or epenthetically related (e.g., lbif [right arrow] lebif)--and asked to judge their identity. Results showed that, like adults, children's ability to detect epenthetic distortions was monotonically related to sonority distance (bw greater than bd greater than lb), and their performance was inexplicable by several statistical and phonetic factors. Domain-specific systems are hypothetically specialized with respect to the outputs they compute and the inputs they allow (Fodor, 1983). Here, we examine whether these 2 conditions for specialization are dissociable. An initial experiment suggests that English speakers could extend a putatively universal phonological restriction to inputs identified as nonspeech. A subsequent comparison of English and Russian participants indicates that the processing of nonspeech inputs is modulated by linguistic experience. Striking, qualitative differences between English and Russian participants suggest that they rely on linguistic principles, both universal and language-particular, rather than generic auditory processing strategies. Thus, the computation of idiosyncratic linguistic outputs is apparently not restricted to speech inputs. Languages are known to exhibit universal restrictions on sound structure. The source of such restrictions, however, is contentious: Do they reflect abstract phonological knowledge, or properties of linguistic experience and auditory perception? We address this question by investigating the restrictions on onset structure. Across languages, onsets of small sonority distances are dispreferred (e.g., "lb" is dispreferred to "bn"). Previous research with aural materials demonstrates such preferences modulate the perception of unattested onsets by English speakers: Universally ill-formed onsets are systematically misperceived (e.g., "lba"[right arrow]"leba") relative to well-formed onsets (e.g., "bn"). Here, we show that the difficulty to process universally ill-formed onsets extends to printed materials. Auxiliary tests indicate that such difficulties reflect phonological, rather than orthographic knowledge, and regression analyses demonstrate such knowledge goes beyond the statistical properties of the lexicon. This article updates a previous article published in 1992 that described the role of the access services manager in policy formation. Since that time, the access services department and mission has matured and evolved to a prominent position within the library organization. Technological changes and innovation in the marketplace of wired and wireless electronic products that provide access to the Internet pushed libraries to respond to higher user expectations. The role of the access services manager expanded to encompass management of many of these technology-driven services. This article discusses the multiple roles of the access services manager in the virtual environment.

Berent, Steriade, Lennertz, and Vaknin (2007) [Berent, I., Steriade, D., Lennertz, T., & Vaknin, V. (2007). "What We Know about What We Have Never Heard: Evidence from Perceptual Illusions". Cognition, 104, 591-630] demonstrate that English speakers' perception of onsets that are unattested in their language mirrors their typological markedness. We suggest that these findings might reflect the presence of universal grammatical constraints, a proposal challenged by Peperkamp's commentary. Our reply exposes mischaracterizations of our claims and presents additional empirical arguments in their support.

Are speakers equipped with preferences concerning grammatical structures that are absent in their language? We examine this question by investigating the sensitivity of English speakers to the sonority of onset clusters. Linguistic research suggests that certain onset clusters are universally preferred (e.g., "bd" is greater than "lb"). We demonstrate that such preferences modulate the perception of unattested onsets by English speakers: Monosyllabic auditory nonwords with onsets that are universally dispreferred (e.g., "lbif") are more likely to be classified as disyllabic and misperceived as identical to their disyllabic counterparts (e.g., "lebif") compared to onsets that are relatively preferred across languages (e.g., "bdif"). Consequently, dispreferred onsets benefit from priming by their epenthetic counterpart (e.g., "lebif"-"lbif") as much as they benefit from identity priming (e.g., "lbif"-"lbif"). A similar pattern of misperception (e.g., "lbif" [right arrow] "lebif") was observed among speakers of Russian, where clusters of this type occur. But unlike English speakers, Russian speakers perceived these clusters accurately on most trials, suggesting that the perceptual illusions of English speakers are partly due to their linguistic experience, rather than phonetic confusion alone. Further evidence against a purely phonetic explanation for our results is offered by the capacity of English speakers to perceive such onsets accurately under conditions that encourage precise phonetic encoding. The perceptual illusions of English speakers are also irreducible to several statistical properties of the English lexicon. The systematic misperception of universally dispreferred onsets might reflect their ill-formedness in the grammars of all speakers, irrespective of linguistic experience. Such universal grammatical preferences implicate constraints on language learning.

The direct estimation of heritability from genome-wide common variant data as implemented in the program Genome-wide Complex Trait Analysis (GCTA) has provided a means to quantify heritability attributable to all interrogated variants. We have quantified the variance in liability to disease explained by all SNPs for two phenotypically-related neurobehavioral disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette Syndrome (TS), using GCTA. Our analysis yielded a heritability point estimate of 0.58 (se = 0.09, p = 5.64e-12) for TS, and 0.37 (se = 0.07, p = 1.5e-07) for OCD. In addition, we conducted multiple genomic partitioning analyses to identify genomic elements that concentrate this heritability. We examined genomic architectures of TS and OCD by chromosome, MAF bin, and functional annotations. In addition, we assessed heritability for early onset and adult onset OCD. Among other notable results, we found that SNPs with a minor allele frequency of less than 5% accounted for 21% of the TS heritability and 0% of the OCD heritability. Additionally, we identified a significant contribution to TS and OCD heritability by variants significantly associated with gene expression in two regions of the brain (parietal cortex and cerebellum) for which we had available expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs). Finally we analyzed the genetic correlation between TS and OCD, revealing a genetic correlation of 0.41 (se = 0.15, p = 0.002). These results are very close to previous heritability estimates for TS and OCD based on twin and family studies, suggesting that very little, if any, heritability is truly missing (i.e., unassayed) from TS and OCD GWAS studies of common variation. The results also indicate that there is some genetic overlap between these two phenotypically-related neuropsychiatric disorders, but suggest that the two disorders have distinct genetic architectures.

Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is a syndrome characterized by recurrent and intrusive thoughts and ritualistic behaviors or mental acts that a person feels compelled to perform. Twin studies, family studies, and segregation analyses provide compelling evidence that OCD has a strong genetic component. The SLITRK1 gene encodes a developmentally regulated stimulator of neurite outgrowth and previous studies have implicated rare variants in this gene in disorders in the OC spectrum, specifically Tourette syndrome (TS) and trichotillomania (TTM). The objective of the current study was to evaluate rare genetic variation in SLITRK1 in risk for OCD and to functionally characterize associated coding variants. We sequenced SLITRK1 coding exons in 381 individuals with OCD as well as in 356 control samples and identified three novel variants in seven individuals. We found that the combined mutation load in OCD relative to controls was significant (p = 0.036).
