11. Implementing Career Academies Schoolwide: 2001-2002 Developments, Promising Practices.

Abstract

This document, which is based on the findings of case studies of how four high schools from across the country have successfully implemented the schoolwide career academy model, presents recent developments and best practices in schoolwide career academies. The document consists of a brief introduction describing the case studies and one chapter on each of the following case study high schools: (1) Ben Franklin High School (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania); (2) Oak Grove High School (San Jose, California); (3) South Grand Prairie High School (Grand Prairie, Texas); and (4) West High School (Columbus, Ohio). Each case study contains some or all of the following elements: a program overview; a review of developments in 2001-2002; promising practices; and appendixes/attachments. All four case studies focus on the following aspects of schoolwide implementation of career academies: (1) creating small learning communities; (2) curriculum and teaching to prepare students for college and careers; and (3) work- based and experiential learning tied to classroom studies. The following are among the best practices highlighted: a ninth-grade success academy; consolidation of small learning communities (SLCs); "pure" scheduling; democratic management structures supportive of the SLC/academy approach; partnering with local colleges to allow career academy students to earn college credits; academy facilitators; and cultivating ownership. 12. Career Academy Course Sequences.

Abstract

This career academy course sequence guide is designed to give teachers a quick overview of the course sequences of well-known career academy and career pathway programs from across the country. The guide presents a variety of sample course sequences for the following academy themes: (1) arts and communication; (2) business and finance; (3) computers and information technology; (4) engineering, manufacturing, and construction; (5) environmental science, natural resources, and agriculture; (6) health and biosciences; and (7) tourism and hospitality. In addition to course sequences for each academy theme, the guide also offers examples of specific course descriptions related to each theme. The course descriptions contain a detailed syllabus for each course plus recommended texts and sources of additional information. Because the goal of career academies is to simultaneously prepare students for college and careers, all the course descriptions provided only describe courses that meet college admission standards. The guide's introduction lists four planning guides that can be consulted as start-up or planning guides along with the names, World Wide Web addresses, and brief overviews of the programs offered by seven key sources of career academy-related information and/or providers of career academy programs that were consulted in compiling the guide. Abstract

This document presents four case studies illustrating how selected high schools from across the country have implemented the career academy model schoolwide. The case studies profile the career academies of the following schools: (1) Ben Franklin High School (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania); (2) Oak Grove High School (San Jose, California); (3) South Grand Prairie High School (Grand Prairie, Texas); and (4) West High School (Columbus, Ohio). All four case studies focus on the following aspects of schoolwide implementation of career academies: (1) creating small learning communities (deciding whether all academies should have career themes; how teachers and students should be recruited or assigned to academies; deciding how many academies to have; and the pros and cons of belonging to the academy versus to the school); (2) curriculum and teaching to prepare students for college and careers (academy leaders' responsibilities in relation to administrators and counselors and relating career themes to rigorous, standards- based curriculum); and (3) work-based and experiential learning tied to classroom studies (achieving economies of scale in work-based and experiential learning and modifying the design of work-based and experiential learning to accommodate larger numbers of students). Concluding the document are a self-assessment guide for career academies and companion guidelines for analyzing student data. (MN)

15. Issues in Schoolwide Application of Career Academies.

Abstract

This document examines issues in schoolwide application of career academies. Part 1 reviews the three defining features of career academies: (1) a career academy is a small learning community in which a cluster of students share several classes each year that are taught by the same team of teachers over a period of 2-4 years; (3) each academy offers a rigorous and relevant college preparatory curriculum organized around a career theme; and (3) career academies immerse students in the adult world through partnerships with community groups (including employers, parents, and higher education) and activities connecting students to the world beyond high schools (including job shadowing, internships, service learning, and one-to-one mentoring). In Part 2, these three defining features of career academies are used to organize a discussion of some issues that arise when a high school moves to an all-academy structure. The following issues are among those discussed: deciding whether all academies should have career themes; specifying academy leaders' responsibility in relation to various administrators and counselors; and deciding how to achieve economies of scale in work-based and experiential learning. Part 3 describes three existing checklists and rubrics for monitoring implementation of individual career academies. (MN)

Abstract

Hintergrund: Große Femurdefekte bei periprothetischem Spätinfekt (PPI) nach Hüfttotalendoprothese (HTEP) erfordern oft den Einsatz großer, individueller Metallendoskelett-armierter Zementspacer (iMECS). Ziel der Arbeit: Ziele waren die Erfassung der klinischen, radiologischen und funktionellen Ergebnisse (Harris Hip Score [HHS]) 2 Jahre nach Behandlung eines PPI unter Verwendung eines iMECS. Zentrale patientenspezifische Parameter sollten im Hinblick auf das Behandlungsergebnis ausgewertet werden. Material und Methoden: Das Kollektiv dieser monozentrischen retrospektiven Kohortenstudie umfasste 29 Patienten. Das Follow-up zum Zeitpunkt der Nachuntersuchung (NU) betrug durchschnittlich 24,4 Monate (23,0–27,6 Monate). Als Behandlungserfolg wurde eine Infektfreiheit nach endoprothetischer Gelenkrekonstruktion gewertet. Die beiden Patientengruppen (mit Erfolg [E]/kein Erfolg [kE]) wurden hinsichtlich Geschlechterverteilung, Komorbiditätenindex nach Charlson (CCI), Anzahl früherer septischer Wechsel, Rate an polymikrobiellen und „difficult-to-treat“-Infekten verglichen. Ergebnisse: Der durchschnittliche CCI im Gesamtkollektiv betrug 6,4 Punkte. Bei 23 von 29 Patienten (79 %) war eine Gelenkrekonstruktion möglich. Bei 4 Patienten war 2 Jahre nach operativer PPI-Behandlung keine NU möglich (2 verstorben, 2 nicht teilnahmefähig). Zur NU waren 17 von initial 29 Patienten infektfrei rekonstruiert mit einem durchschnittlichen HHS von 75 Punkten. Es traten keine iMECS-assoziierten revisionsbedürftigen Komplikationen auf. Zwischen den Patientengruppen war nur der initiale CCI (E: 4,1 Punkte; kE: 9,7 Punkte) signifikant unterschiedlich (p< 0,05). Diskussion: Bei großen Femurdefekten leisten iMECS eine sichere temporäre Stabilisierung. Die Chance auf eine erfolgreiche Gelenkrekonstruktion ist eng mit dem individuellen Komorbiditätenprofil verbunden.

Abstract

Large femoral defects in late periprosthetic infection (PPI) after total hip arthroplasty (THA) often require the use of large, individual metal endoskeleton-reinforced cement spacers (iMECS).The aim was to record the clinical, radiological and functional results (Harris Hip Score HHS) up to the 2 years after treatment of a PPI using an iMECS. Major patient-specific parameters were to be evaluated with regard to the treatment outcome.The collective of this single-center retrospective cohort study comprised 29 patients. The mean follow-up was 24.4 months (range: 23.0 to 27.6 months). The absence of infection after endoprosthetic hip joint reconstruction was rated as successful treatment. The two patient groups (successful (S)/not successful (nS)) were compared with regard to gender distribution, the Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), the number of previous septic changes, and the rate of polymicrobial and difficult-to-treat infections.The average CCI in the total collective was 6.4 points. Joint reconstruction was possible in 23 of 29 patients (79%); 2 years after PPI treatment 4 patients were not available for a follow-up examination (2 deceased, 2 unable to participate). At the time of the follow-up, 17 of the 29 patients had received a joint reconstruction and were free of infection, with an average HHS of 75 points. There were no iMECS-associated complications requiring revision. Only the initial CCI (S: 4.1 points; nS: 9.7 points) differed significantly between the patient groups (p 0.05).In the case of large femoral defects, iMECS provide secure temporary stabilization.
