This work aimed to compare pre- and post-slaughter methodologies to estimate body fat reserves in dairy goats. Twenty-six lactating Saanen goats ranging from 43.6 to 69.4 kg of body weight (BW) and from 1.84 to 2.96 of body condition score (BCS, 0–5 range) were used. Fifteen pre-slaughter and four post-slaughter measurement values were used to estimate the weight of fat in the omental (OM), mesenteric (MES), perirenal (PR), organ (ORG), carcass (CARC), and non-carcass components (NC) and total (TOT, calculated as the sum of CARC and NC) depots in goats. The pre-slaughter measurements were withers height, rump height, rump length, pelvis width, chest depth, shoulder width, heart girth, body length, sternum height, BW, BCS assessed in the lumbar (BCSl) and sternal (BCSs) regions, and fat thickness measured by ultrasound in the lumbar (FTUSl), sternal (FTUSs), and perirenal (FTUSpr) regions. The post-slaughter measurements were hot carcass weight (HCW), empty body weight (EBW), and fat thickness measured by digital caliper in the lumbar (FTDCl) and sternal (FTDCs) regions. Linear and multiple regressions were fit to data collected. BW, BCS (from lumbar and sternal regions), all somatic measurements, and fat thickness measured by ultrasound in the lumbar and sternal regions were not adequate to estimate the weight of total fat in lactating Saanen goats (R2 ≤ 0.55). The best pre-slaughter and post-slaughter estimators of OM, MES, PR, ORG, NC, and TOT fat were FTUSpr and EBW, respectively. Among pre- and post-slaughter measurements, BCSl (R2 = 0.63) and HCW (R2 = 0.82) provided the most accurate predictions of CARC fat, respectively. Multiple regression using the pre-slaughter variables FTUSpr, BW, and BCSl yielded estimates of TOT fat with an R2 = 0.92 (RSD = 1.14 kg). On the other hand, TOT fat predicted using the post-slaughter variables HCW and FTDCs had an R2 = 0.83 (RSD = 1.41 kg). These results confirm that fat reserves can be predicted in lactating Saanen goats with high precision using multiple regression equations combining in vivo measurements.

RESUMO: O presente trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de relatar um surto de fotossensibilização causado por Froelichia humboldtiana em bovinos leiteiros no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. Foram examinados animais de uma propriedade rural que apresentavam sintomatologia compatível com fotodermatite. Procedeu-se a coleta de amostras de sangue periférico de cinco bovinos para análise das atividades das enzimas hepáticas gamaglutamiltransferase e aspartatoaminotransferase, além da concentração de bilirrubina total, direta e indireta. Das áreas de pele com lesões de dois animais foram realizadas biópsias. Constatou-se que 15 animais de um rebanho composto por 40 animais apresentaram fotossemsibilização. Os animais tinham histórico de apresentar lesões de fotodermatite aproximadamente 10 dias após pastarem em áreas invadidas por F. humboldtiana. Ao exame clínico dos bovinos leiteiros notou-se que inicialmente apresentavam prurido e hiperemia nas áreas de pele despigmentadas do dorso e úbere, também havia alterações do comportamento. Posteriormente, as áreas hiperêmicas se apresentavam com edema que evoluíam para dermatite ulcerativa, necrotizante e exudativa, com perda de extensas áreas da epiderme. As úlceras eram mais graves nos quatro bovinos que apresentavam automutilação por lambedura. Esses quatro animais foram retirados do pasto e abrigados em local sombreado. Uma semana após, o prurido regrediu e as fissuras da pele passaram a cicatrizar. Porém, as lesões reapareceram logo após os bovinos serem reintroduzidas no pasto infestado por F. humbolditiana. Percebeu-se ainda queda na produção leiteira (redução de 50-60%) das vacas após a instalação de fotodermatite. Porém, os bezerros que ainda eram lactantes e ingeriam o leite nas vacas acometidas por fotossensibilização, não apresentaram sinais de fotodermatite. A histopatologia de biópsias de pele revelou inflamação na derme superficial constituída por mastócitos, linfócitos, e alguns plasmócitos. Na epiderme haviam extensas úlceras, recobertas por crostas, associada a infiltrado neutrofílico. As atividades séricas de AST, GGT e as concentrações de bilirrubina estavam dentro dos valores de referência normais para a espécie bovina. O diagnóstico de fotossensibilização primária associada à ingestão de F. humboldtiana foi baseado na epidemiologia, sinais clínicos, bioquímica sérica, biópsia de pele e reocorrência das lesões após os animais serem reintroduzidos no pasto invadido pela planta. Conclui-se que a F. humboldtiana é uma importante causa de fotossensibilização primária em bovinos leiteiros no semiárido brasileiro e que sua toxina provavelmente não é excretada pelo leite bovino. ABSTRACT: The present study was conducted with the objective to report an outbreak of photosensitization caused by Froelichia humboldtiana in dairy cattle in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Animals from a rural property with symptoms compatible with photodermatitis were examined. Peripheral blood samples from five cattle were collected for the analysis of the activities of hepatic enzymes gammaglutamyltransferase and aspartate aminotransferase, in addition were also analysed the concentration of total, direct and indirect bilirubin. From the areas of skin with lesions of two animals, biopsies were performed. It was verified that 15 animals from a herd composed by 40 animals presented photosensitization. The animals had a history of photodermatitis lesions approximately 10 days after grazing in areas invaded by F. humboldtiana. Clinical examination of dairy cattle showed that they initially had pruritus and hyperemia in the depigmented areas of the dorsum and udder, and there were also behavioral changes. Subsequently, the hyperemic areas presented edema that evolved to ulcerative, necrotizing and exudative dermatitis, with loss of extensive areas of the epidermis. The ulcers were more severe in four bovines that had self-mutilation by licking. These four animals were removed from the pasture and sheltered in a shady location. A week later, the pruritus regressed and the fissures of the skin began to heal. However, the lesions reappeared after the cattle were reintroduced in the grass infested by F. humbolditiana. There was also a decrease in milk production (reduction of 50-60%) of cows after the installation of photodermatitis. However, calves that were still lactating and ingested the milk in photosensitized cows, showed no signs of photodermatitis. Histopathology of skin biopsies revealed inflammation in the superficial dermis consisting of mast cells, lymphocytes, and some plasma cells. In the epidermis there were extensive ulcers, covered by crusts, associated with neutrophilic infiltrate. Serum activities of AST, GGT and bilirubin concentrations were within normal reference values for the bovine species. The diagnosis of primary photosensitization associated with F. humboldtiana ingestion was based on epidemiology, clinical signs, serum biochemistry, skin biopsy and lesion reoccurrence after the animals were reintroduced in the pasture invaded by the plant. It is concluded that F. humboldtiana is an important cause of primary photosensitization in dairy cattle in the Brazilian semi-arid region and that its toxin is probably not excreted by bovine milk.

Spineless cactus is a useful feed for various animal species in arid and semiarid regions due to its adaptability to dry and harsh soil, high efficiency of water use and carbohydrates storage. This meta-analysis was carried out to assess the effect of spineless cactus on animal performance, and develop and evaluate equations to predict dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) in meat lambs. Equations for predicting DMI and ADG as a function of animal and diet characteristics were developed using data from eight experiments. The dataset was comprised of 40 treatment means from 289 meat lambs, in which cactus was included from 0 to 75% of the diet dry matter (DM). Accuracy and precision were evaluated by cross-validation using the mean square error of prediction (MSEP), which was decomposed into mean bias, systematic bias and random error; concordance correlation coefficient, which was decomposed into accuracy (Cb) and precision (ρ); and coefficient of determination (R2). In addition, the data set was used to evaluate the predicting accuracy and precision of the main lamb feeding systems (Agricultural and Food Research Council, Small Ruminant Nutritional System, National Research Council and Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique) and also two Brazilian studies. O presente trabalho foi conduzido com o objetivo de relatar surtos de fotossensibilização causados por Froelichia humboldtiana em equídeos no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. Foram examinados animais de três propriedades rurais, além de asininos abandonados nas estradas. Procedeu-se a coleta de amostras de sangue periférico de cinco jumentos e dois equinos para análise das atividades das enzimas hepáticas e concentrações de bilirrubina total, direta e indireta. Das áreas de pele com lesões de dois jumentos e de um equino foram realizadas biópsias. Constatou-se que 50 asininos, 18 equinos e duas mulas foram acometidos. Dos asininos acometidos, 45 eram jumentos criados soltos em margens de estradas. Relatou-se a morte de 30 jumentos em decorrência de miíases e debilidade. Os animais tinham histórico de apresentarem lesões de fotodermatite aproximadamente um mês após pastarem em áreas invadidas por F. humboldtiana e recuperavam-se das lesões 10 a 30 dias após serem retirados dessas áreas. Porém, o quadro de prurido e automutilação retornava em uma ou duas semanas quando os equídeos eram reintroduzidos nessas áreas. Ao exame clínico de asininos jovens e adultos, foram observadas feridas extensas, ulceradas, que drenavam exsudato seroso abundante. Todas essas feridas decorriam de traumas causados por automutilação secundária ao intenso prurido. Além disso, muitas das feridas apresentavam miíase. Os equinos e as mulas apresentavam lesões de fotodermatite somente nas áreas de pele despigmentadas, não sendo observadas lesões oculares. A avaliação histopatológica de biópsias de pele revelou inflamação perivascular na derme superficial. Na epiderme havia extensas úlceras, recobertas por fibrina associada a infiltrado neutrofílico e numerosos agregados bacterianos basofílicos superficiais. As atividades séricas de AST, GGT e as concentrações de bilirrubina no soro estavam dentro dos valores de referência. O diagnóstico de fotossensibilização primária associada à ingestão de F. humboldtiana foi baseado na epidemiologia, sinais clínicos, bioquímica sérica, biópsia de pele e reocorrência das lesões após os animais serem reintroduzidos no pasto invadido pela planta. The study was conducted in order to report outbreaks of photosensitization caused by Froelichia humboldtiana in equidae in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Animals from three farms and donkeys found abandoned in roads were examined. Peripheral blood samples were collected from five donkeys and two horses for analysis of serum activities of liver enzymes and concentrations of total, direct and indirect bilirubin. Skin biopsies were collected from two donkeys and a horse for histopatological exams. Fifty donkeys, 18 horses and two mules were affected. Of the affected donkeys, 45 were raised on roadsides and 30 died due to myiasis and weakness. The animals had a history of presenting skin lesions of photodermatitis about one month after being grazing in areas invaded by F. humboldtiana and recovered 10-30 days after being removed from these areas. If the animals were reintroduced in the paddocks with F. humboldtiana, pruritus and self-mutilation returned in a week or two. Young and adults donkeys showed extensive ulcerated wounds, that drained abundant serous exudate. All these wounds resulted from trauma caused by secondary self-mutilation to intense itching. In addition, many wounds had myiasis. The horses and mules had lesions of photodermatitis only in the areas of depigmented skin, no ocular lesions were observed. Histopathology of skin biopsies revealed perivascular inflammation in the superficial dermis. The epidermis had extensive ulcers, covered by fibrin associated with neutrophilic infiltrate and numerous basophilic bacterial aggregates. The serum activities of AST, GGT and serum concentrations of bilirubin were within normal ranges. The diagnosis of primary photosensitization associated with ingestion of F. humboldtiana was based on the epidemiology, clinical signs, serum biochemistry, skin lesions, and the recurrence of lesions after the reintroduction of the animals into the pasture invaded by the plant. F. humboldtiana is an important cause of primary photosensitization in equidae in the Brazilian semiarid region, resulting in weakness and death of large numbers of animals, mainly donkeys that don’t receive proper treatment.

Objetivou-se estudar a cinética de fermentação ruminal de 18 coprodutos da indústria do biodiesel, com potencial de uso na alimentação de ruminantes, através da técnica de produção de gases in vitro. Os alimentos estudados foram os farelos de: algodão, canudo de pito, crambe, girassol, mamona destoxificado com cal e soja e as tortas de: algodão, amendoim, babaçu, crambe, dendê, girassol, licuri, sementes de macaúba, nabo forrageiro e pinhão manso. Os parâmetros avaliados foram: produção total de gases (VFT), produção de gases proveniente dos carboidratos fibrosos (VFCF), produção de gases proveniente dos carboidratos não fibrosos (VFCNF), taxa de degradação dos carboidratos fibrosos (kdCF), taxa de degradação dos carboidratos não fibrosos (kdCNF) e lag time (Lag). Os alimentos foram agrupados através dos parâmetros de cinética de fermentação ruminal, utilizando-se um R 2 de 0,8, em seis diferentes grupos. A torta de nabo forrageiro e os farelo de algodão, soja, crambe e girassol compuseram o primeiro grupo, enquanto o segundo grupo foi formado pelas tortas de babaçu e de girassol. O terceiro grupo foi formado por farelo de canudo-de-pito e farelo de mamona destoxificado e pelas tortas de algodão, licuri e pinhão-manso I e II. O quarto grupo apresentou as tortas de amendoim I, crambe e dendê. O grupo cinco apresentou somente a torta de amendoim II, sendo que de forma semelhante o grupo seis foi formado apenas pela torta de macaúba. Os valores de VFCF e VFCNF variaram de 16,72 a 200,07 mL e 53,09 a 242,12 mL, respectivamente. Os valores médios de KdCF e KdCNF variaram de 0,0002 a 0,039 % h -1 e 0,022 a 0,430 % h -1 , respectivamente. O Lag médio e o VFT variaram de 0,0001 a 5,2029 h e 136,94 a 301,44 mL. Alguns produtos possuem potencial para substituir o farelo de soja, especialmente a torta de nabo forrageiro e os farelos de algodão, crambe e girassol. The objective of this study was to investigate the rumen fermentation kinetics of 18 by-products from the biodiesel industry exhibiting potential for use in the feeding of ruminants via the in vitro gas production technique. The following feeds were investigated: cottonseed, canudo de pito, crambe, sunflower, castor seed (detoxified with lime) and soybean meals and cottonseed, peanut, babassu, crambe, palm kernel, sunflower, licuri nut, macaúba, forage radish and jatropha cakes. The evaluated parameters were total gas production (VfT), gas production from fibrous carbohydrates (VfFC), gas production from non- fibrous carbohydrates (VfNFC), the degradation rate of fibrous carbohydrates (kdFC), the degradation rate of non-fibrous carbohydrates (kdNFC) and lag time (lag). The feeds were grouped into six different groups according to rumen fermentation kinetic parameters and adopting an R 2 of 0.8. Forage radish cake and the meals of cottonseed, soybean, crambe and sunflower composed the first group, while the cakes of babassu and sunflower formed the second group. Canudo de pito and castor seed meals and the cakes of cottonseed, licuri and jatropha I and II formed the third group. The fourth group was composed by the cakes of crambe, palm kernel and peanut I. The fifth group was formed by peanut cake II, while macauba fruit cake formed the sixth group. The VfNFC and VfFC varied from 16.72 to 200.07 mL and from 53.09 to 242.12 mL, respectively. The mean kdFC and kdNFC values varied from 0.002 to 0.039% h -1 and from 0.022 to 0.430% h -1 , respectively. The mean lag and VfT varied from 0.0001 to 5.2029 hours and 136.94 to 301.44 mL, respectively. A number of the products exhibited the potential to replace soybean meal, especially the forage radish cake and cottonseed, crambe and sunflower meals.

The objective of the experiment was to classify 20 protein co-products and by-products of the biodiesel industry with potential to use in ruminant feeding. The meals evaluated were: cottonseed, canudo-de-pito, crambe, sunflower, castor-oil seeds detoxified with calcium, non-detoxified castor-oil seeds and soybean; and the cakes were: cottonseed, peanut, babassu, crambe, palm oil, sunflower, licuri, macauba seeds, non-detoxified castor-oil seeds, turnip and jatropha. The samples were quantified to determine dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), neutral detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (NDFap), non-fiber carbohydrates (NFC), acid detergent fiber corrected for ash and protein (ADFap), lignin, cutin and starch levels. The CP profile was characterized in fractions A, B1, B2, B3 and C. The in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD), in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility (IVNDFD), rumen degradable and undegradable protein, intestinal digestibility, indigestible neutral detergent fiber and undegradable neutral detergent insoluble protein were evaluated. The OM, CP, EE, NDFap, NFC, ADFap, lignin, cutin and starch contents varied from 81.95 to 95.41%, 18.92 to 57.75%, 0.56 to 18.40%, 10.13 to 62.30%, 3.89 to 27.88%, 6.15 to 36.86%, 1.19 to 5.04%, 0 to 17.87% and 0.68 to 14.50%, respectively. The values of fractions A, B1, B2, B3 and C ranged from 5.40 to 43.31%, 0.08 to 37.63%, 16.75 to 79.39%, 1.86 to 59.15% and 0.60 to 11.47%, respectively. Concentrations of IVDMD, IVNDFD, rumen-degradable and undegradable protein, intestinal digestibility, indigestible NDF and undegradable neutral detergent insoluble protein ranged from 31.00 to 95.92%, 55.04 to 97.74%, 41.06 to 97.61%, 2.39 to 58.94, 9.27 to 94.26%, 1.05 to 40.80% and 0.29 to 2.92%, respectively. Some of these products can replace soybean meal, specially the Macauba seeds cake, cottonseed meal and peanut and turnip cakes based on digestive characteristics.

This research was conducted to investigate the effect of live and inactive sugarcane yeast on beef cattle voluntary intake, apparent digestibility of nutrients, ruminal pH, volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentrations, and ruminal ammonia. Five rumen-cannulated Nellore heifers were distributed in a 5×5 Latin square design, with five experimental periods of 15 days, with seven days for adaptation to the additives and the remaining days for data records and sampling. Total mixed ration (TMR) was composed by corn silage (20%) and concentrate (80%) based on corn and soybean meal. Five treatments were evaluated: without additive use (negative control; NC); chemical buffer addition – 0.71% in concentrate DM of sodium bicarbonate and 0.18% of magnesium oxide (positive control, PC); 10 g/day live yeast (LY); 15 g/day of inactive yeast (IY15); and 30 g/day of inactive yeast (IY30). Sugarcane yeasts were directly infused in rumen immediately after morning and afternoon feed supply. Feed additives did not affect voluntary intake, nutrient digestibility, and sorting behavior of animals. However, heifers from all treatments presented preferential intake of fibrous fraction of diet, especially those from NC and IY15. Nitrogen balance, VFA concentrations, and blood parameters were not influenced as well. Sodium bicarbonate and magnesium oxide led to greater ruminal pH than yeast, and IY15 presented greater pH than IY30. Ruminal ammonia was increased by the use of additives. Active and inactive yeasts are not recommended as feed additives for bovines fed diets with 80% of concentrate since it allows animals to select fibrous particles from TMR, and no representative gain in ruminal parameters and digestibilities are guaranteed.
