The double coplanar pendulum is an example of the coexistence of regular and chaotic dynamics for equal energy values but different initial conditions. Regular trajectories predominate for low energies; as the energy is increased, the system passes through values where chaotic trajectories are abundant, and then, increasing the energy further, it is again dominated by regular trajectories. Given that the energetically accessible states are bounded, a relevant question is about the fraction of phase space regular or chaotic trajectories as the energy varies. In this paper, we calculate the relative abundance of chaotic trajectories in phase space, characterizing the trajectories using the maximum Lyapunov exponent, and find that, for low energies, it grows exponentially., Comment: 10 pages. 6 figs

In this work we characterize the escape of orbits from the phase space of the Riemann-Liouville (RL) fractional standard map (fSM). The RL-fSM, given in action-angle variables, is derived from the equation of motion of the kicked rotor when the second order derivative is substituted by a RL derivative of fractional order $\alpha$. Thus, the RL-fSM is parameterized by $K$ and $\alpha\in(1,2]$ which control the strength of nonlinearity and the fractional order of the RL derivative, respectively. Indeed, for $\alpha=2$ and given initial conditions, the RL-fSM reproduces Chirikov's standard map. By computing the survival probability $P_{\text{S}}(n)$ and the frequency of escape $P_{\text{E}}(n)$, for a hole of hight $h$ placed in the action axis, we observe two scenarios: When the phase space is ergodic, both scattering functions are scale invariant with the typical escape time $n_{\text{typ}}=\exp\langle \ln n \rangle \propto (h/K)^2$. In contrast, when the phase space is not ergodic, the scattering functions show a clear non-universal and parameter-dependent behavior.

We obtain a formula for the statistical distribution of instantaneous frequencies in the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model. This work is based on the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi's theory of globally coupled phase oscillators, which we review in full detail by discussing its assumptions and showing all steps behind the derivation of its main results. Our formula is a stationary probability density function with a complex mathematical structure, is consistent with numerical simulations and gives a description of the stationary collective states of the Kuramoto-Sakaguchi model.

Several aspects influence corrosive processes in RC structures, such as environmental conditions, structural geometry, and mechanical properties. Since these aspects present large randomnesses, probabilistic models allow a more accurate description of the corrosive phenomena. On the other hand, the definition of limit states, applied in the reliability assessment, requires a proper mechanical model. In this context, this study proposes an accurate methodology for the mechanical-probabilistic modelling of RC structures subjected to reinforcements' corrosion. To this purpose, an improved damage approach is proposed to define the limit states for the probabilistic modelling, considering three main degradation phenomena: concrete cracking, rebar yielding, and rebar corrosion caused either by chlorides or carbonation process. The stochastic analysis is evaluated by the Monte Carlo simulation method due to the computational efficiency of the LDMC. The proposed mechanical-probabilistic methodology is implemented in a computational framework and applied to the analysis of a simply supported RC beam, and a 2D RC frame. Curves illustrate the probability of failure over a service life of 50 years. Moreover, the proposed model allows drawing the probability of failure map and then identify the critical failure path for progressive collapse analysis. Collapse path changes caused by the corrosion phenomena are observed.

We investigate how the diffusion exponent is affected by controlling small domains in the phase space.The main Kolomogorov-Arnold-Moser - KAM island of the Standard Map is considered to validate the investigation. The bifurcation scenario where the periodic island emits smaller resonance regions is considered and we show how closing paths escape from the island shore by controlling points and hence making the diffusion exponent smaller. We notice the bigger controlled area the smaller the diffusion exponent. We show that controlling around the hyperbolic points associated to the bifurcation is better than a random control to reduce the diffusion exponent. The recurrence plot shows us channels of escape and a control applied there reduces the diffusion exponent.

Using the main results of the Kuramoto theory of globally coupled phase oscillators combined with methods from probability and generalized function theory in a geometric analysis, we extend Kuramoto's results and obtain a mathematical description of the instantaneous frequency (phase-velocity) distribution. Our result is validated against numerical simulations, and we illustrate it in cases where the natural frequencies have normal and Beta distributions. In both cases, we vary the coupling strength and compare systematically the distribution of time-averaged frequencies (a known result of Kuramoto theory) to that of instantaneous frequencies, focussing on their qualitative differences near the synchronized frequency and in their tails. For a class of natural frequency distributions with power-law tails, which includes the Cauchy-Lorentz distribution, we analyze rare events by means of an asymptotic formula obtained from a power series expansion of the instantaneous frequency distribution.

The chaotic diffusion for particles moving in a time dependent potential well is described by using two different procedures: (i) via direct evolution of the mapping describing the dynamics and ; (ii) by the solution of the diffusion equation. The dynamic of the diffusing particles is made by the use of a two dimensional, nonlinear area preserving map for the variables energy and time. The phase space of the system is mixed containing both chaos, periodic regions and invariant spanning curves limiting the diffusion of the chaotic particles. The chaotic evolution for an ensemble of particles is treated as random particles motion and hence described by the diffusion equation. The boundary conditions impose that the particles can not cross the invariant spanning curves, serving as upper boundary for the diffusion, nor the lowest energy domain that is the energy the particles escape from the time moving potential well. The diffusion coefficient is determined via the equation of the mapping while the analytical solution of the diffusion equation gives the probability to find a given particle with a certain energy at a specific time. The momenta of the probability describe qualitatively the behavior of the average energy obtained by numerical simulation, which is investigated either as a function of the time as well as some of the control parameters of the problem.

The scaling invariance for chaotic orbits near a transition from unlimited to limited diffusion in a dissipative standard mapping is explained via the analytical solution of the diffusion equation. It gives the probability of observing a particle with a specific action at a given time. We show the diffusion coefficient varies slowly with the time and is responsible to suppress the unlimited diffusion. The momenta of the probability are determined and the behavior of the average squared action is obtained. The limits of small and large time recover the results known in the literature from the phenomenological approach and, as a bonus, a scaling for intermediate time is obtained as dependent on the initial action. The formalism presented is robust enough and can be applied in a variety of other systems including time dependent billiards near a transition from limited to unlimited Fermi acceleration as we show at the end of the letter and in many other systems under the presence of dissipation as well as near a transition from integrability to non integrability.

We show that, in strongly chaotic dynamical systems, the average particle velocity can be calculated analytically by consideration of Brownian dynamics in phase space, the method of images and use of the classical diffusion equation. The method is demonstrated on the simplified Fermi-Ulam accelerator model, which has a mixed phase space with chaotic seas, invariant tori and Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser (KAM) islands. The calculated average velocities agree well with numerical simulations and with an earlier empirical theory. We characterize a transition from normal to ballistic diffusion in a bouncing ball dynamics. The system is composed of a particle, or an ensemble of non-interacting particles, experiencing elastic collisions with a heavy and periodically moving wall under the influence of a constant gravitational field. The dynamics lead to a mixed phase space where chaotic orbits have a free path to move along the velocity axis, presenting a normal diffusion behavior. Depending on the control parameter, one can observe the presence of featured resonances, known as accelerator modes, that lead to a ballistic growth of velocity. Through statistical and numerical analysis of the velocity of the particle, we are able to characterize a transition between the two regimes, where transport properties were used to characterize the scenario of the ballistic regime. Also, in an analysis of the probability of an orbit to reach an accelerator mode as a function of the velocity, we observe a competition between the normal and ballistic transport in the mid range velocity., Comment: To appear in Physical Review E, 2018

The changeover from normal to super diffusion in time dependent billiards is explained analytically. The unlimited energy growth for an ensemble of bouncing particles in time dependent billiards is obtained by means of a two dimensional mapping of the first and second moments of the velocity distribution function. We prove that for low initial velocities the mean velocity of the ensemble grows with exponent ~1/2 of the number of collisions with the border, therefore exhibiting normal diffusion. Eventually, this regime changes to a faster growth characterized by an exponent ~1 corresponding to super diffusion. For larger initial velocities, the temporary symmetry in the diffusion of velocities explains an initial plateau of the average velocity.

The chaotic diffusion for a family of Hamiltonian mappings whose angles diverge in the limit of vanishingly action is investigated by using the solution of the diffusion equation. The system is described by a two-dimensional mapping for the variables action, $I$, and angle, $\theta$ and controlled by two control parameters: (i) $\epsilon$, controlling the nonlinearity of the system, particularly a transition from integrable for $\epsilon=0$ to non-integrable for $\epsilon\ne0$ and; (ii) $\gamma$ denoting the power of the action in the equation defining the angle. For $\epsilon\ne0$ the phase space is mixed and chaos is present in the system leading to a finite diffusion in the action characterized by the solution of the diffusion equation. We study some statistical properties for the behavior of the average squared velocity -- hence the temperature -- for an ensemble of classical particles moving in a billiard whose boundary is time dependent. We assume the collisions of the particles with the boundary of the billiard are inelastic leading the average squared velocity to reach a steady state dynamics for large enough time. The description of the stationary state is made by using two different approaches: (i) heat transfer motivated by the Fourier law and, (ii) billiard dynamics using either numerical simulations and theoretical description., Comment: Published -Physical Review E, 2016

The behavior of the average velocity, its deviation and average squared velocity are characterized using three techniques for a 1-D dissipative impact system. The system -- a particle, or an ensemble of non interacting particles, moving in a constant gravitation field and colliding with a varying platform -- is described by a nonlinear mapping. The average squared velocity allows to describe the temperature for an ensemble of particles as a function of the parameters using: (i) straightforward numerical simulations; (ii) analytically from the dynamical equations; (iii) using the probability distribution function. Comparing analytical and numerical results for the three techniques, one can check the robustness of the developed formalism, where we are able to estimate numerical values for the statistical variables, without doing extensive numerical simulations. Statistical properties for the recurrence of particles in an oval billiard with a hole in the boundary are discussed. The hole is allowed to move in the boundary under two different types of motion: (i) counterclockwise periodic circulation with a fixed step length and; (ii) random movement around the boundary. After injecting an ensemble of particles through the hole we show that the surviving probability of the particles without recurring - without escaping - from the billiard is described by an exponential law and that the slope of the decay is proportional to the relative size of the hole. Since the phase space of the system exhibits islands of stability we show that there are preferred regions of escaping in the polar angle, hence given a partial answer to an open problem: {\it Where to place a hole in order to maximize or minimize a suitable defined measure of escaping}.

We study the convergence towards the equilibrium for a dissipative and stochastic time-dependent oval billiard. The dynamics of the system is described by using a generic four dimensional nonlinear map for the variables: the angular position of the particle, the angle formed by the trajectory of the article with the tangent line at the position of the collision, the absolute velocity of the particle, and the instant of the hit with the boundary. The dynamics of the stationary state as well as the dynamical evolution towards the equilibrium is made by using an ensemble of non interacting particles. Finally, we make a connection with the thermodynamic by using the energy equipartition theorem.

Decay to asymptotic steady state in one-dimensional logistic-like mappings is characterized by considering a phenomenological description supported by numerical simulations and confirmed by a theoretical description. As the control parameter is varied bifurcations in the fixed points appear. We verified at the bifurcation point in both; the transcritical, pitchfork and period-doubling bifurcations, that the decay for the stationary point is characterized via a homogeneous function with three critical exponents depending on the nonlinearity of the mapping. Near the bifurcation the decay to the fixed point is exponential with a relaxation time given by a power law whose slope is independent of the nonlinearity. The formalism is general and can be extended to other dissipative mappings.

Once recognizing that point particles moving inside the extended version of the rippled billiard perform L\'evy flights characterized by a L\'evy-type distribution $P(\ell)\sim \ell^{-(1+\alpha)}$ with $\alpha=1$, we derive a generalized two-dimensional non-linear map $M_\alpha$ able to produce L\'evy flights described by $P(\ell)$ with $0<\alpha<2$. Due to this property, we name $M_\alpha$ as the L\'evy Map. Then, by applying Chirikov's overlapping resonance criteria we are able to identify the onset of global chaos as a function of the parameters of the map. With this, we state the conditions under which the L\'evy Map could be used as a L\'evy pseudo-random number generator and, furthermore, confirm its applicability by computing scattering properties of disordered wires., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

The dynamics of a bouncing ball model under the influence of dissipation is investigated by using a two dimensional nonlinear mapping. When high dissipation is considered, the dynamics evolves to different attractors. The evolution of the basins of the attracting fixed points is characterized, as we vary the control parameters. Crises between the attractors and their boundaries are observed. We found that the multiple attractors are intertwined, and when the boundary crisis between their stable and unstable manifolds occur, it creates a successive mechanism of destruction for all attractors originated by the sinks. Also, an impact physical crises is setup, and it may be useful as a mechanism to reduce the number of attractors in the system.

Some dynamical properties of non interacting particles in a bouncer model are described. They move under gravity experiencing collisions with a moving platform. The evolution to steady state is described in two cases for dissipative dynamics with inelastic collisions: (i) for large initial energy; (ii) for low initial energy. For (i) we prove an exponential decay while for (ii) a power law marked by a changeover to the steady state is observed. A relation for collisions and time is obtained and allows us to write relevant observables as temperature and entropy as function of either number of collisions and time., Comment: 36 pages, 10 figures. We investigate the escape dynamics of the doubling map with a time-periodic hole. We use Ulam's method to calculate the escape rate as a function of the control parameters. We consider two cases, oscillating or breathing holes, where the sides of the hole are moving in or out of phase respectively. We find out that the escape rate is well described by the overlap of the hole with its images, for holes centred at periodic orbits., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures. A competition between decay and growth of energy in a time-dependent stadium billiard is discussed giving emphasis in the decay of energy mechanism. A critical resonance velocity is identified for causing of separation between ensembles of high and low energy and a statistical investigation is made using ensembles of initial conditions both above and below the resonance velocity. For high initial velocity, Fermi acceleration is inherent in the system. However for low initial velocity, the resonance allies with stickiness hold the particles in a regular or quasi-regular regime near the fixed points, preventing them from exhibiting Fermi acceleration. Also, a transport analysis along the velocity axis is discussed to quantify the competition of growth and decay of energy and making use distributions of histograms of frequency, and we set that the causes of the decay of energy are due to the capture of the orbits by the resonant fixed points.

The effects of dissipation on the scaling properties of nonlinear discontinuous maps are investigated by analyzing the behavior of the average squared action $\left< I^2 \right>$ as a function of the $n$-th iteration of the map as well as the parameters $K$ and $\gamma$, controlling nonlinearity and dissipation, respectively. We concentrate our efforts to study the case where the nonlinearity is large; i.e., $K\gg 1$. In this regime and for large initial action $I_0\gg K$, we prove that dissipation produces an exponential decay for the average action $\left< I \right>$. Also, for $I_0\cong 0$, we describe the behavior of $\left< I^2 \right>$ using a scaling function and analytically obtain critical exponents which are used to overlap different curves of $\left< I^2 \right>$ onto an universal plot. A gas of noninteracting particles diffuses in a lattice of pulsating scatterers. In the finite horizon case with bounded distance between collisions and strongly chaotic dynamics, the velocity growth (Fermi acceleration) is well described by a master equation, leading to an asymptotic universal non-Maxwellian velocity distribution scaling as v ~ t. Some phase space transport properties for a conservative bouncer model are studied. The dynamics of the model is described by using a two-dimensional measure preserving mapping for the variables velocity and time. The system is characterized by a control parameter $\epsilon$ and experiences a transition from integrable ($\epsilon=0$) to non integrable ($\epsilon\ne 0$). For small values of $\epsilon$, the phase space shows a mixed structure where periodic islands, chaotic seas and invariant tori coexist. As the parameter $\epsilon$ increases and reaches a critical value $\epsilon_c$ all invariant tori are destroyed and the chaotic sea spreads over the phase space leading the particle to diffuse in velocity and experience Fermi acceleration (unlimited energy growth). During the dynamics the particle can be temporarily trapped near periodic and stable regions. We use the finite time Lyapunov exponent to visualize this effect. The survival probability was used to obtain some of the transport properties in the phase space. For large $\epsilon$, the survival probability decays exponentially when it turns into a slower decay as the control parameter $\epsilon$ is reduced. Dynamical properties are studied for escaping particles, injected through a hole in an oval billiard. The dynamics is considered for both static and periodically moving boundaries. For the static boundary, two different decays for the recurrence time distribution were observed after exponential decay for short times: A changeover to: (i) power law or; (ii) stretched exponential. Both slower decays are due to sticky orbits trapped near KAM islands, with the stretched exponential apparently associated with a single group of large islands. Some dynamical properties present in a problem concerning the acceleration of particles in a wave packet are studied. The dynamics of the model is described in terms of a two-dimensional area preserving map. We show that the phase space is mixed in the sense that there are regular and chaotic regions coexisting. We use a connection with the standard map in order to find the position of the first invariant spanning curve which borders the chaotic sea. We find that the position of the first invariant spanning curve increases as a power of the control parameter with the exponent 2/3. The standard deviation of the kinetic energy of an ensemble of initial conditions obeys a power law as a function of time, and saturates after some crossover. Scaling formalism is used in order to characterize the chaotic region close to the transition from integrability to nonintegrability and a relationship between the power law exponents is derived. The formalism can be applied in many different systems with mixed phase space. Then, dissipation is introduced into the model and therefore the property of area preservation is broken, and consequently attractors are observed. We show that after a small change of the dissipation, the chaotic attractor as well as its basin of attraction are destroyed, thus leading the system to experience a boundary crisis. The dynamics of a time-dependent stadium-like billiard are studied by a four dimensional nonlinear mapping. We have shown that even without any dissipation, the particle experiences a decrease on its velocity. Such condition is related with a critical resonance velocity, where if the initial velocity has a higher value than the resonant one, we can observe Fermi acceleration, however, if the initial velocity has a initial value smaller than the critical one, the particle is temporarily trapped surrounding the stability islands, in a stickiness regime. We believe that this sticky orbits can act as deceleration mechanism for Fermi Acceleration., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures

A new universal {\it empirical} function that depends on a single critical exponent (acceleration exponent) is proposed to describe the scaling behavior in a dissipative kicked rotator. The scaling formalism is used to describe two regimes of dissipation: (i) strong dissipation and (ii) weak dissipation. For case (i) the model exhibits a route to chaos known as period doubling and the Feigenbaum constant along the bifurcations is obtained. When weak dissipation is considered the average action as well as its standard deviation are described using scaling arguments with critical exponents. The universal {\it empirical} function describes remarkably well a phase transition from limited to unlimited growth of the average action.

Some dynamical properties for a dissipative time-dependent oval-shaped billiard are studied. The system is described in terms of a four-dimensional nonlinear mapping. Dissipation is introduced via inelastic collisions of the particle with the boundary, thus implying that the particle has a fractional loss of energy upon collision. The dissipation causes profound modifications in the dynamics of the particle as well as in the phase space of the non dissipative system. In particular, inelastic collisions can be assumed as an efficient mechanism to suppress Fermi acceleration of the particle. The dissipation also creates attractors in the system, including chaotic. We show that a slightly modification of the intensity of the damping coefficient yields a drastic and sudden destruction of the chaotic attractor, thus leading the system to experience a boundary crisis. We have characterized such a boundary crisis via a collision of the chaotic attractor with its own basin of attraction and confirmed that inelastic collisions do indeed suppress Fermi acceleration in two-dimensional time dependent billiards.

We have studied a dissipative version of a one-dimensional Fermi accelerator model. The dynamics of the model is described in terms of a two-dimensional, nonlinear area-contracting map. The dissipation is introduced via innelastic collisions of the particle with the walls and we consider the dynamics in the regime of high dissipation. For such a regime, the model exhibits a route to chaos known as period doubling and we obtain a constant along the bifurcations so called the Feigenbaum's number $\delta$.

We consider time-dependence of dynamical transport, following a recent study of the stadium billiard in which classical transmission and reflection probabilities were shown to exhibit exponential or algebraic decay depending on the choice of the lead or "hole". The system considered here is much more general, having a generic mixed phase space structure, time-dependence of the dynamics, and Fermi acceleration (trajectories with unbounded velocity). We propose an efficient numerical scheme for this model, observe the asymmetric transport effect, and discuss observed stretched exponential decays., Comment: 10 pages

We study some dynamical properties of a Lorentz gas. We have considered both the static and time dependent boundary. For the static case we have shown that the system has a chaotic component characterized with a positive Lyapunov Exponent. For the time-dependent perturbation we describe the model using a four-dimensional nonlinear map. The behaviour of the average velocity is considered in two situations (i) non-dissipative and (ii) dissipative. Our results show that the unlimited energy growth is observed for the non-dissipative case. However, when dissipation, via damping coefficients, is introduced the senary changes and the unlimited engergy growth is suppressed. The behaviour of the average velocity is described using scaling approach.

Some scaling properties for classical light ray dynamics inside a periodically corrugated waveguide are studied by use of a simplified two-dimensional nonlinear area-preserving map. It is shown that the phase space is mixed. The chaotic sea is characterized using scaling arguments revealing critical exponents connected by an analytic relationship. Some dynamical properties of a bouncing ball model under the presence of an external force modeled by two nonlinear terms are studied. The description of the model is made by use of a two dimensional nonlinear measure preserving map on the variables velocity of the particle and time. We show that raising the straight of a control parameter which controls one of the nonlinearities, the positive Lyapunov exponent decreases in the average and suffers abrupt changes. We also show that for a specific range of control parameters, the model exhibits the phenomenon of Fermi acceleration.
