Search

Identifying orbital textures and their effects on the electronic properties of quantum materials is a critical element in developing orbitronic devices. However, orbital effects are often entangled with the spin degree of freedom, making it difficult to uniquely identify them in charge transport phenomena. Here, we present a combination of scanning superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) current imaging, global transport measurements, and theoretical analysis, that reveals a direct contribution of orbital textures to the linear charge transport of 2D systems. Specifically, we show that in the LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interface, which lacks both rotation and inversion symmetries, an anisotropic orbital Rashba coupling leads to conductivity anisotropy in zero magnetic field. We experimentally demonstrate this result by locally measuring the conductivity anisotropy, and correlating its appearance to the non-linear Hall effect, showing that the two phenomena have a common origin. Femtosecond laser light can transfer spin angular momentum between magnetic subspecies that exhibit hybridized valence bands within an alloy or compound, and represents the fastest route for manipulating the magnetization of a material. To date, ultrafast spin transfer has predominantly been explained in terms of the initial and final states available for laser excitation. Here, by comparing the measured and calculated dynamics across the entire $M$-edges of two very similar Heusler compounds, $Co_2MnGa$ and $Co_2MnGe$ as well as a sample of elemental Co, we find that simply accounting for the initial and final electron states available for laser excitation cannot alone explain the experimental observations. The influence of spin lifetimes must also be included, due to the shifting of the Fermi level upon replacing Ga with Ge, or the presence of crystalline disorder. This explains why the ordered $L2_1$ phase of $Co_2MnGa$ demonstrates strong laser-induced magnetic signal enhancements across the entire Co-edge, while similar enhancements were not observed in partially disordered $Co_2MnGe$. Although intra-site spin-transfers were expected in the minority channel in pure Co due to the presence of many more available states in the minority channel above the Fermi level, no such signal was observed due to very short few-femtosecond spin lifetimes in a metal. Finally, we identify key regions in the magnetic asymmetry where a transiently enhanced signal could be misinterpreted as a light-induced spin-transfer signature.

Topological defects play a critical role across many fields, mediating phase transitions and macroscopic behaviors as they move through space. Their role as robust information carriers has also generated much attention. However, controlling their motion remains challenging, especially towards achieving motion along well-defined paths which typically require predefined structural patterning. Here we demonstrate the tunable, unidirectional motion of topological defects, specifically magnetic dislocations in a weak magnetic stripe pattern, induced by external magnetic field in a laterally unconfined thin film. This motion is shown to mediate the overall continuous rotation of the stripe pattern. We determine the connection between the unidirectional motion of dislocations and the underlying three-dimensional (3D) magnetic structure by performing 3D magnetic vectorial imaging with in situ magnetic fields. A minimal model for dislocations in stripe patterns that encodes the symmetry breaking induced by the external magnetic field reproduces the motion of dislocations that facilitate the 2D rotation of the stripes, highlighting the universality of the phenomenon. This work establishes a framework for studying the field-driven behavior of topological textures and designing materials that enable well defined, controlled motion of defects in unconfined systems, paving the way to manipulate information carriers in higher-dimensional systems., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures

The rise of non-magnetic topological semimetals, which provide a promising platform for observing and controlling various spin-orbit effects, has led to significant advancements in the field of topological spintronics. RhSi exists in two distinct polymorphs: cubic and orthorhombic crystal structures. The noncentrosymmetric B20 cubic structure has been extensively studied for hosting unconventional multifold fermions. In contrast, the orthorhombic structure, which crystallizes in the Pnma space group (No. 62), remains less explored and belongs to the family of topological Dirac semimetals. In this work, we investigate the structural, magnetic, and electrical properties of RhSi textured-epitaxial films grown on Si(111) substrates, which crystallize in the orthorhombic structure. We investigate the efficiency of pure spin current transport across RhSi/permalloy interfaces and the subsequent spin-to-charge current conversion via inverse spin Hall effect measurements. The xperimentally determined spin Hall conductivity in orthorhombic RhSi reaches a maximum value of 126 ($\hbar$/e)($\Omega$.cm)$^{-1}$ at 10 K, which aligns reasonably well with first-principles calculations that attribute the spin Hall effect in RhSi to the spin Berry curvature mechanism. Additionally, we demonstrate the ability to achieve a sizable spin-mixing conductance (34.7 nm$^{-2}$) and an exceptionally high interfacial spin transparency of 88$%$ in this heterostructure, underlining its potential for spin-orbit torque switching applications. Overall, this study broadens the scope of topological spintronics, emphasizing the controlled interfacial spin-transport processes and subsequent spin-to-charge conversion in a previously unexplored topological Dirac semimetal RhSi/ferromagnet heterostructure.

Antiferromagnets that display very small stray magnetic field are ideal for spintronic applications. Of particular interest are non-collinear, chiral antiferromagnets of the type Mn3X (X=Sn, Ge), which display a large magnetotransport response that is correlated with their antiferromagnetic ordering. The ability to read out and manipulate this ordering is crucial for their integration into spintronic devices. These materials exhibit a tiny unbalanced magnetic moment such that a large external magnetic field can, in principle, be used to set the material into a single antiferromagnetic domain. However, in thin films of Mn3Sn, we find that such fields induce only a partial magnetic ordering. By detecting two orthogonal in-plane components of the magnetic order vector, we find that the non-switchable fraction has a unidirectional anisotropy. This also enables us to visualize switching along multiple easy axes in Mn3Sn. Studying the switching at the nanoscale allows us to correlate the pining behavior to crystal grain boundaries in the Mn3Sn nanowire structures.

The advent of two-dimensional van der Waals materials is a frontier of condensed matter physics and quantum devices. However, characterizing such materials remains challenging due to the limitations of bulk material techniques, necessitating the development of specialized methods. In this study, we investigate the superconducting properties of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x flakes by integrating them with a hybrid superconducting microwave resonator. The hybrid resonator is significantly modified by the interaction with the flake while maintaining a high quality factor. We also observe a significant upshift of the resonator frequency with increasing temperature, as well as a positive nonlinearity. These effects originate from a presently unknown microscopic mechanism within the flake, and can be modeled as a two-level system bath interacting with the resonant mode. When nonlinear measures are estimated from sampled temporal signals with finite-length, a radius parameter must be carefully selected to avoid a poor estimation. These measures are generally derived from the correlation integral which quantifies the probability of finding neighbors, i.e. pair of points spaced by less than the radius parameter. While each nonlinear measure comes with several specific empirical rules to select a radius value, we provide a systematic selection method. We show that the optimal radius for nonlinear measures can be approximated by the optimal bandwidth of a Kernel Density Estimator (KDE) related to the correlation sum. The KDE framework provides non-parametric tools to approximate a density function from finite samples (e.g. histograms) and optimal methods to select a smoothing parameter, the bandwidth (e.g. bin width in histograms). We use results from KDE to derive a closed-form expression for the optimal radius. The latter is used to compute the correlation dimension and to construct recurrence plots yielding an estimate of Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy. Recent advances in the field of generative models and in particular generative adversarial networks (GANs) have lead to substantial progress for controlled image editing, especially compared with the pre-deep learning era. Despite their powerful ability to apply realistic modifications to an image, these methods often lack properties like disentanglement (the capacity to edit attributes independently). In this paper, we propose an auto-encoder which re-organizes the latent space of StyleGAN, so that each attribute which we wish to edit corresponds to an axis of the new latent space, and furthermore that the latent axes are decorrelated, encouraging disentanglement. We work in a compressed version of the latent space, using Principal Component Analysis, meaning that the parameter complexity of our autoencoder is reduced, leading to short training times ($\sim$ 45 mins). Qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate the editing capabilities of our approach, with greater disentanglement than competing methods, while maintaining fidelity to the original image with respect to identity. Our autoencoder architecture simple and straightforward, facilitating implementation.

The direct manipulation of spins via light may provide a path toward ultrafast energy-efficient devices. However, distinguishing the microscopic processes that can occur during ultrafast laser excitation in magnetic alloys is challenging. Here, we study the Heusler compound Co2MnGa, a material that exhibits very strong light-induced spin transfers across the entire M-edge. By combining the element-specificity of extreme ultraviolet high harmonic probes with time-dependent density functional theory, we disentangle the competition between three ultrafast light-induced processes that occur in Co2MnGa: same-site Co-Co spin transfer, intersite Co-Mn spin transfer, and ultrafast spin-flips mediated by spin-orbit coupling. By measuring the dynamic magnetic asymmetry across the entire M-edges of the two magnetic sublattices involved, we uncover the relative dominance of these processes at different probe energy regions and times during the laser pulse. How the architecture of gene regulatory networks ultimately shapes gene expression patterns is an open question, which has been approached from a multitude of angles. The dominant strategy has been to identify non-random features in these networks and then argue for the function of these features using mechanistic modelling. Here we establish the foundation of an alternative approach by studying the correlation of eigenvectors with synthetic gene expression data simulated with a basic and popular model of gene expression dynamics -- attractors of Boolean threshold dynamics in signed directed graphs. Eigenvectors of the graph Laplacian are known to explain collective dynamical states (stationary patterns) in Turing dynamics on graphs. In this study, we show that eigenvectors can also predict collective states (attractors) for a markedly different type of dynamics, Boolean threshold dynamics, and category of graphs, signed directed graphs. However, the overall predictive power depends on details of the network architecture, in a predictable fashion. Quantum materials can display physical phenomena rooted in the geometry of electronic wavefunctions. The corresponding geometric tensor is characterized by an emergent field known as Berry curvature (BC). Large BCs typically arise when electronic states with different spin, orbital or sublattice quantum numbers hybridize at finite crystal momentum. In all materials known to date, the BC is triggered by the hybridization of a single type of quantum number. Here, we report the discovery of the first material system having both spin and orbital-sourced BC: LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ interfaces grown along the [111] direction. We detect independently these two sources and directly probe the BC associated to the spin quantum number through measurements of an anomalous planar Hall effect. The observation of a nonlinear Hall effect with time-reversal symmetry signals large orbital-mediated BC dipoles. A dome-shaped phase diagram of superconducting critical temperature upon doping is often considered as a hallmark of unconventional superconductors. This behavior, observed in two-dimensional electron gases in $\mathrm{SrTiO}_3$-based interfaces whose electronic density is controlled by field effect, has not been explained unambiguously yet. Here, we elaborate a generic scenario for the superconducting phase diagram of these oxide interfaces based on Schr\"odinger-Poisson numerical simulations of the quantum well and transport experiments on a double-gate field-effect device. We propose that the optimal doping point of maximum $T_c$ marks the transition between a single-band and a fragile two-gap s$\pm$-wave superconducting state involving $t_{2g}$ bands of different orbital character. At the optimal doping point, we predict and observe experimentally a bifurcation in the dependence of $T_c$ on the carrier density, which is controlled by the details of the doping execution. Where applying a back-gate voltage triggers the filling of a high-energy $d_\mathrm{xy}$ subband and initiates the overdoped regime, doping with a top-gate delays the filling of the subband and maintains the 2-DEG in the single-band superconducting state of higher $T_c$., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Two dimensional SrTiO3-based interfaces stand out among non-centrosymmetric superconductors due to their intricate interplay of gate tunable Rashba spin-orbit coupling and multi-orbital electronic occupations, whose combination theoretically prefigures various forms of non-standard superconductivity. However, a convincing demonstration by phase sensitive measurements has been elusive so far. Here, by employing superconducting transport measurements in nano-devices we present clear-cut experimental evidences of unconventional superconductivity in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface. The central observations are the substantial anomalous enhancement of the critical current by small magnetic fields applied perpendicularly to the plane of electron motion, and the asymmetric response with respect to the magnetic field direction. These features have a unique trend in intensity and sign upon electrostatic gating that, together with their dependence on temperature and nanowire dimensions, cannot be accommodated within a scenario of canonical spin-singlet superconductivity. We theoretically demonstrate that the hall-marks of the experimental observations unambiguously indicate a coexistence of Josephson channels with sign difference and intrinsic phase shift. The character of these findings establishes the occurrence of independent components of unconventional pairing in the superconducting state due to inversion symmetry breaking. Magnetic van der Waals materials provide an ideal playground for exploring the fundamentals of low-dimensional magnetism and open new opportunities for ultrathin spin processing devices. The Mermin-Wagner theorem dictates that as in reduced dimensions isotropic spin interactions cannot retain long-range correlations; the order is stabilized by magnetic anisotropy. Here, using ultrashort pulses of light, we demonstrate all-optical control of magnetic anisotropy in the two-dimensional van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS$_3$. Tuning the photon energy in resonance with an orbital transition between crystal-field split levels of the nickel ions, we demonstrate the selective activation of a sub-THz two-dimensional magnon mode. The pump polarization control of the magnon amplitude confirms that the activation is governed by the instantaneous magnetic anisotropy axis emergent in response to photoexcitation of orbital states with a lowered symmetry. Our results establish pumping of orbital resonances as a universal route for manipulating magnetic order in low-dimensional (anti)ferromagnets.

Understanding the electronic transport properties of layered, van der Waals transition metal halides (TMHs) and chalcogenides is a highly active research topic today. Of particular interest is the evolution of those properties with changing thickness as the 2D limit is approached. Here, we present the electrical conductivity of exfoliated single crystals of the TMH, cluster magnet, Nb3Cl8, over a wide range of thicknesses both with and without hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) encapsulation. The conductivity is found to increase by more than three orders of magnitude when the thickness is decreased from 280 {\mu}m to 5 nm, at 300 K. At low temperatures and below ~50 nm, the conductance becomes thickness independent, implying surface conduction is dominating. Temperature dependent conductivity measurements indicate Nb3Cl8 is an insulator, however the effective activation energy decreases from a bulk value of 310 meV to 140 meV by 5nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) shows mild surface oxidation in devices without hBN capping, however, no significant difference in transport is observed when compared to the capped devices, implying the thickness dependent transport behavior is intrinsic to the material. We revisit the notion of gene regulatory code in embryonic development in the light of recent findings about genome spatial organisation. By analogy with the genetic code, we posit that the concept of code can only be used if the corresponding adaptor can clearly be identified. An adaptor is here defined as an intermediary physical entity mediating the correspondence between codewords and objects in a gratuitous and evolvable way. In the context of the gene regulatory code, the encoded objects are the gene expression levels, while the concentrations of specific transcription factors in the cell nucleus provide the codewords. The notion of code is meaningful in the absence of direct physicochemical relationships between the objects and the codewords, when the mediation by an adaptor is required. We propose that a plausible adaptor for this code is the gene domain, that is, the genome segment delimited by topological insulators and comprising the gene and its enhancer regulatory sequences. We review recent evidences, based on genome-wide chromosome conformation capture experiments, showing that preferential contact domains found in metazoan genomes are the physical traces of gene domains. Noncollinear antiferromagnets with a D0$_{19}$ (space group = 194, P6$_{3}$/mmc) hexagonal structure have garnered much attention for their potential applications in topological spintronics. Here, we report the deposition of continuous epitaxial thin films of such a material, Mn$_{3}$Sn, and characterize their crystal structure using a combination of x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Growth of Mn$_{3}$Sn films with both (0001) c-axis orientation and (40$\bar{4}$3) texture is achieved. In the latter case, the thin films exhibit a small uncompensated Mn moment in the basal plane, quantified via magnetometry and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments. This cannot account for the large anomalous Hall effect simultaneously observed in these films, even at room temperature, with magnitude $\sigma_{\mathrm{xy}}$ ($\mu_{0}H$ = 0 T) = 21 $\mathrm{\Omega}^{-1}\mathrm{cm}^{-1}$ and coercive field $\mu_{0}H_{\mathrm{C}}$ = 1.3 T. We attribute the origin of this anomalous Hall effect to momentum-space Berry curvature arising from the symmetry-breaking inverse triangular spin structure of Mn$_{3}$Sn. Upon cooling through the transition to a glassy ferromagnetic state at around 50 K, a peak in the Hall resistivity close to the coercive field indicates the onset of a topological Hall effect contribution, due to the emergence of a scalar spin chirality generating a real-space Berry phase. We demonstrate that the polarity of this topological Hall effect, and hence the chiral-nature of the noncoplanar magnetic structure driving it, can be controlled using different field cooling conditions.

Non-collinear antiferromagnets, with either an L1$_{2}$ cubic crystal lattice (e.g. Mn$_{3}$Ir and Mn$_{3}$Pt) or a D0$_{19}$ hexagonal structure (e.g. Mn$_{3}$Sn and Mn$_{3}$Ge), exhibit a number of novel phenomena of interest to topological spintronics. Amongst the cubic systems, for example, tetragonally distorted Mn$_{3}$Pt exhibits an intrinsic anomalous Hall effect (AHE). However, Mn$_{3}$Pt only enters a non-collinear magnetic phase close to the stoichiometric composition and at suitably large thicknesses. Therefore, we turn our attention to Mn$_{3}$Ir, the material of choice for use in exchange bias heterostructures. In this paper, we investigate the magnetic and electrical transport properties of epitaxially grown, face-centered-cubic $\gamma$-Mn$_{3}$Ir thin films with (111) crystal orientation. Relaxed films of 10 nm thickness exhibit an ordinary Hall effect, with a hole-type carrier concentration of (2.24 $\pm$ 0.08) $\times$ 10$^{23}$ cm$^{-3}$. On the other hand, TEM characterization demonstrates that ultrathin 3 nm films grow with significant in-plane tensile strain. This may explain a small remanent moment, observed at low temperatures, shown by XMCD spectroscopy to arise from uncompensated Mn spins. Of the order 0.02 $\mu_{B}$ / atom, this dominates electrical transport behavior, leading to a small AHE and negative magnetoresistance. These results are discussed in terms of crystal microstructure and chiral domain behavior, with spatially resolved XML(C)D-PEEM supporting the conclusion that small antiferromagnetic domains, < 20 nm in size, of differing chirality account for the absence of observed Berry curvature driven magnetotransport effects.

Electric-field effect control of two-dimensional electron gases (2-DEG) has enabled the exploration of nanoscale electron quantum transport in semiconductors. Beyond these classical materials, transition metal-oxide-based structures have d-electronic states favoring the emergence of novel quantum orders absent in conventional semiconductors. In this context, the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface that combines gate-tunable superconductivity and sizeable spin-orbit coupling is emerging as a promising platform to realize topological superconductivity. However, the fabrication of nanodevices in which the electronic properties of this oxide interface can be controlled at the nanoscale by field-effect remains a scientific and technological challenge. Here, we demonstrate the quantization of conductance in a ballistic quantum point contact (QPC), formed by electrostatic confinement of the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 2-DEG with a split-gate. Through finite source-drain voltage, we perform a comprehensive spectroscopic investigation of the 3d energy levels inside the QPC, which can be regarded as a spectrometer able to probe Majorana states in an oxide 2-DEG.

Antiferromagnetic materials are of great interest for spintronics. Here we present a comprehensive study of the growth, structural characterization, and resulting magnetic properties of thin films of the non-collinear antiferromagnet Mn$_{3}$Ir. Using epitaxial engineering on MgO (001) and Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ (0001) single crystal substrates, we control the growth of cubic ${\gamma}$-Mn$_{3}$Ir in both (001) and (111) crystal orientations, and discuss the optimization of growth conditions to achieve high-quality crystal structures with low surface roughness. Exchange bias is studied in bilayers, with exchange bias fields as large as -29 mT (equivalent to a unidirectional anisotropy constant of 11.5 nJ cm$^{-2}$) measured in Mn$_{3}$Ir (111) / permalloy heterostructures at room temperature. In addition, a distinct dependence of blocking temperature on in-plane crystallographic direction in Mn$_{3}$Ir (001) / Py bilayers is observed. We investigate the kinetics of a polymer collapse due to the formation of irreversible crosslinks between its monomers. Using the contact probability $P(s)$ as a scale-dependent order parameter depending on the chemical distance $s$, our simulations show the emergence of a cooperative pearling instability. Namely, the polymer undergoes a sharp conformational transition to a set of absorbing states characterized by a length scale $\xi$ corresponding to the mean pearl size. This length and the transition time depend on the polymer equilibrium dynamics and the crosslinking rate. The quasi 2D electron system (q2DES) that forms at the interface between LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 has attracted much attention from the oxide electronics community. One of its hallmark features is the existence of a critical LaAlO3 thickness of 4 unit-cells (uc) for interfacial conductivity to emerge. In this paper, the chemical, electronic, and transport properties of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 samples capped with different metals grown in a system combining pulsed laser deposition, sputtering, and in situ X-ray photoemission spectroscopy are investigated. The results show that for metals with low work function a q2DES forms at 1-2 uc of LaAlO3 and is accompanied by a partial oxidation of the metal, a phenomenon that affects the q2DES properties and triggers the formation of defects. In contrast, for noble metals, the critical thickness is increased above 4 uc. The large diversity of exotic electronic phases displayed by two-dimensional superconductors confronts physicists with new challenges. These include the recently discovered quantum Griffith singularity in atomic Ga films, topological phases in proximized topological insulators and unconventional Ising pairing in transition metal dichalcogenide layers. In LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures, a gate tunable superconducting electron gas is confined in a quantum well at the interface between two insulating oxides. Remarkably, the gas coexists with both magnetism and strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling and is a candidate system for the creation of Majorana fermions. However, both the origin of superconductivity and the nature of the transition to the normal state over the whole doping range remain elusive. Missing such crucial information impedes harnessing this outstanding system for future superconducting electronics and topological quantum computing. Here we show that the superconducting phase diagram of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 is controlled by the competition between electron pairing and phase coherence. Through resonant microwave experiments, we measure the superfluid stiffness and infer the gap energy as a function of carrier density. Whereas a good agreement with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory is observed at high carrier doping, we find that the suppression of Tc at low doping is controlled by the loss of macroscopic phase coherence instead of electron pairing as in standard BCS theory. We find that only a very small fraction of the electrons condenses into the superconducting state and propose that this corresponds to the weak filling of a high-energy dxz/yz band, more apt to host superconductivity

The spin-orbit interaction couples the electrons' motion to their spin. Accordingly, passing a current in a material with strong spin-orbit coupling generates a transverse spin current (spin Hall effect, SHE) and vice-versa (inverse spin Hall effect, ISHE). The emergence of SHE and ISHE as charge-to-spin interconversion mechanisms offers a variety of novel spintronics functionalities and devices, some of which do not require any ferromagnetic material. However, the interconversion efficiency of SHE and ISHE (spin Hall angle) is a bulk property that rarely exceeds ten percent, and does not take advantage of interfacial and low-dimensional effects otherwise ubiquitous in spintronics hetero- and mesostructures. Here, we make use of an interface-driven spin-orbit coupling mechanism - the Rashba effect - in the oxide two-dimensional electron system (2DES) LaAlO3/SrTiO3 to achieve spin-to-charge conversion with unprecedented efficiency. Through spin-pumping, we inject a spin current from a NiFe film into the oxide 2DES and detect the resulting charge current, which can be strongly modulated by a gate voltage. In higher organisms, all cells share the same genome, but every cell expresses only a limited and specific set of genes that defines the cell type. During cell division, not only the genome, but also the cell type is inherited by the daughter cells. This intriguing phenomenon is achieved by a variety of processes that have been collectively termed epigenetics: the stable and inheritable changes in gene expression patterns. This article reviews the extremely rich and exquisitely multi-scale physical mechanisms that govern the biological processes behind the initiation, spreading and inheritance of epigenetic states. These include not only the changes in the molecular properties associated with the chemical modifications of DNA and histone proteins, such as methylation and acetylation, but also less conventional ones, such as the physics that governs the three-dimensional organization of the genome in cell nuclei. Strikingly, to achieve stability and heritability of epigenetic states, cells take advantage of many different physical principles, such as the universal behavior of polymers and copolymers, the general features of non-equilibrium dynamical systems, and the electrostatic and mechanical properties related to chemical modifications of DNA and histones. By putting the complex biological literature under this new light, the emerging picture is that a limited set of general physical rules play a key role in initiating, shaping and transmitting this crucial "epigenetic landscape". The recent development in the fabrication of artificial oxide heterostructures opens new avenues in the field of quantum materials by enabling the manipulation of the charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. In this context, the discovery of two-dimensional electron gases (2-DEGs) at LAlO3/SrTiO3 interfaces, which exhibit both superconductivity and strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC), represents a major breakthrough. Here, we report on the realisation of a field-effect LaAlO3/SrTiO3 device, whose physical properties, including superconductivity and SOC, can be tuned over a wide range by a top-gate voltage. We derive a phase diagram, which emphasises a field-effect-induced superconductor-to-insulator quantum phase transition. Magneto-transport measurements indicate that the Rashba coupling constant increases linearly with electrostatic doping. Our results pave the way for the realisation of mesoscopic devices, where these two properties can be manipulated on a local scale by means of top-gates.
