Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zarysowanie tła literackiego, a także filozoficznego i społeczno-politycznego związanego z gatunkiem, który w 2017 roku Jon Day określił jako „Brexlit”. Artykuł skupia się na kluczowych powieściach brytyjskich, irlandzkich, a także tych utworach anglojęzycznych spoza kręgu kulturowego Wysp Brytyjskich, które zawierają w swojej treści, a czasem również formie, przesłanie dotyczące decyzji podjętej w referendum z 2016 roku, tj. decyzji o opuszczeniu przez Zjednoczone Królestwo Unii Europejskiej. Świat powieściowy w szczególnie przenikliwy i wrażliwy sposób zareagował na przemiany społeczno-polityczne w Wielkiej Brytanii oraz, przynajmniej częściowo, w Irlandii Północnej. Podstawowe pytanie, jakie stawiamy sobie tutaj, dotyczy roli dyskursu literackiego w konfrontacji z rzeczywistością społeczno-polityczną oraz rozmaitymi ideologiami oddziałującymi na mieszkańców Zjednoczonego Królestwa. Czy powieści z ostatnich kilku lat pokazują alternatywne scenariusze polityczne? Czy, z nieuniknionym poślizgiem komentując rzeczywistość europejską, są jedynie przesuniętym w czasie i załamanym przez światło ideologii odbiciem zmian społecznych – krzywymi lustrami kryzysu? Czy może istnieje w dyskursie powieściowym wciąż niedostatecznie wykorzystany potencjał do kształtowania i urzeczywistniania narracji fikcyjnych z myślą o lepszejprzyszłości kultury i całej sfery publicznej na Wyspach? Odpowiedź, jaką tu proponujemy, skupia się na podtrzymaniu ścisłych związków między ewolucją brytyjskiego rozumienia świata społeczno-politycznego a kulturą europejską sensu largo. Także kulturą antycypowaną lub projektowaną na najbliższą przyszłość. Pisarze brytyjscy oraz irlandzcy, odnosząc się do brexitu, niemal bez wyjątku akcentują przesłanie o zachowaniu ponadpolitycznej i ponadnarodowej wspólnoty – nawet w obliczu niedawnych podziałów.

Northern Ireland owes its existence to a partition of Ireland that took place a century ago. The knottiest problems involved in the UK’s recent divorce with the European Union can be traced back not only to the Belfast Agreement of 1998 but also to the establishment of a new border, and a new borderland, in the island of Ireland in 1922. The same year (1922) saw the coming into effect of a partition of Upper Silesia, which was triggered by the events and political decisions taken in 1921. The primary focus of this essay is on literary representations of crises and anxieties connected with the transformations of the geopolitical statuses of the two provinces (i.e. Northern Ireland and Upper Silesia) and selected historical, political and cultural parallels between them. Those anxieties are exemplified and illustrated by the leading characters of Glenn Patterson’s Where Are We Now? (2020) and Szczepan Twardoch’s Pokora (2020). Both novels yield to provincial readings that explore basic aporias of uprootedness, displacement, deterritorialization and identity crises, collectively identified here as borderland anxieties. In consequence, transnational and postnational perspectives that emerge from Patterson’s and Twardoch’s works count as proactive responses, encoded in literary texts, to current geopolitical crises in Europe.

Referendum w Zjednoczonym Królestwie zorganizowane 23 czerwca 2016 roku, a następnie brexit formalnie przeprowadzony na początku 2020 roku i sfinalizowany po upłynięciu okresu przejściowego z początkiem 2021 roku wpływają znacząco na status granicy na wyspie Irlandia. Po opuszczeniu przez Zjednoczone Królestwo Unii Europejskiej granica oddzielająca Republikę Irlandii od Irlandii Północnej stała się także granicą Unii Europejskiej. Nawet jeśli z dnia na dzień życie mieszkańców Irlandii korzystających z przejść granicznych nie zmieniło się diametralnie, to powolne, dalekosiężne zmiany zachodzą w samej świadomości Irlandczyków i Brytyjczyków, a także w uwarunkowaniach ekonomicznych i perspektywach społeczno-politycznych po obu stronach nowej/starej granicy. Spojrzenie na jej historię oraz kontekst kulturowy i geopolityczny, jaki proponuje niniejszy esej, opiera się na badaniach z obszaru border studies. Poszerzenie eseju o wybrane aspekty badań nad pamięcią kulturową pozwala na ukazanie interesów i aspiracji mieszkańców terenów przygranicznych, którzy oparcie znajdują we własnej tradycji kulturowej i dyskursach literackich. Celem tego artykułu jest ukazanie wielowymiarowości takiego pojęcia jak granica w okolicznościach zdefiniowanych przez wyniki brytyjskiego referendum z 2016 roku. Optyka i retoryka mocarstwowa, tak chętnie stosowania przez rządzących Zjednoczonym Królestwem konserwatystów, na czele z Borisem Johnsonem, nie uwzględnia wymiaru lokalnego, regionalnego i mniejszościowego. W przypadku najbardziej poszkodowanych mieszkańców Irlandii Północnej (obok Szkocji) status niepogodzonej z opuszczeniem Unii Europejskiej mniejszości paradoksalnie przysługuje 56% głosujących w referendum dorosłych obywateli tego regionu.

Eimear McBride’s A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing (2013) is a prime specimen of post-Joycean heteroglossia in Irish fi ction. The novel exhibits a programmatic dialogical/intertextual orientation orchestrated with its own parodic and ironic modes, which makes McBride’s work uniquely capable of re-energizing Irish cultural tradition. Simultaneously, her novel contributes its own distinct voice to the impressive amplitude of artistic expressions which have emerged from Irish culture in the wake of Joyce’s writings. Mikhail Bahtin’s approach to the novel (as discussed in The Dialogic Imagination), in turn, is particularly relevant to McBride’s fi ction because of her incorporation (as well as adaptation) of a variety of voices and perspectives. As a consequence, in A Girl Is a Half-formed Thing, the categories of heteroglossia and dialogism appear to be responsible for creating and sustaining a vital cultural dimension, a dimension which is subject to being perpetually rewritten in the present, even though it crucially depends upon ur-texts from the past.

A review of the 2016 monograph by Karolina Pospiszil Swojskośc i utrata. Obrazy Gornego Śląska w literaturze polskiej i czeskiej po 1989 roku [The Familiar and the Loss. The Images of Upper Silesia in Polish and Czech Literatures after 1989] concentrating upon the properties of the Auther's work, which decide about its interdisciplinary character and testify to her solid grounding in the research methodology (geocriticism), while allowing her to retain a unique poetics, adequate to the historical conditioning and the history of the described region.

Post-Traumatic Realism: Representations of History in Recent Irish NovelsThe aim of my essay is to describe major tendencies in contemporary Irish prose writing concerned with historical and political issues. The diversity of the themes and attitudes to the past necessitates a classification of the writings into several various groups of novels whereas my analysis of the modes of representing the intratextual universe paves the way for identifying a single literary convention (post-traumatic realism) which is typical of the works under discussion. Many of the quoted authors subscribe to historical revisionism which undermines the received historical narrative in Ireland and questions its aggressively nationalist model of patriotism. The novels by Sebastian Barry, Robert McLiam Wilson, Edna O’Brien or Julia O’Faolain, to name just a few, contest that model by demonstrating that it leads to violence, cultural stagnation and petrifying political divisions both in the Republic of Ireland and in Northern Ireland. In the age of the epistemological levelling of historiographic discourse and literary fiction the novels discussed in the essay meaningfully contribute to the debate over the Irish nation’s attitude to their own history and the need to conclude the painful chapters of the past connected with the Civil War as well as with the social and religious conflicts of the twentieth century. Różnorodność tematów i postaw wobec przeszłości zmusza do wyodrębnienia co najmniej kilku odmiennych grup powieści, natomiast analiza sposobów prezentacji universum wewnątrztekstowego pozwala pokusić się o określenie jednej typowej konwencji literackiej, jaką w przypadku omawianych utworów jest realizm posttraumatyczny. Wielu z przytaczanych autorów wpisuje się także w nurt rewizjonizmu historycznego, który podważa zastaną narrację historyczną i obiegowy, nacechowany agresywnym nacjonalizmem model patriotyzmu. W dobie epistemologicznego równouprawnienia dyskursu historiograficznego i fikcji literackiej omawiane w artykule powieści konstruktywnie wpisują się w dyskusję nad stosunkiem narodu irlandzkiego do swojej historii, nad koniecznością zamknięcia raz na zawsze bolesnych rozdziałów związanych z wojną domową początku lat dwudziestych XX wieku i konfliktami na tle społecznym oraz religijnym.
