In this short review we describe the process of designing a superconducting circuit device for quantum information applications. We discuss the factors that must be considered to implement a desired effective Hamiltonian on a device. We describe the translation between a device's physical layout, the circuit graph, and the effective Hamiltonian. We go over the process of electromagnetic simulation of a device layout to predict its behavior. We also discuss concerns such as connectivity, crosstalk suppression, and radiation shielding, and how they affect both on-chip design and enclosure structures. This paper provides an overview of the challenges in superconducting quantum circuit design and acts as a starter document for researchers working on any of these challenges., Comment: 20 pages, 11 figures

Quantum sensors promise revolutionary advances in medical imaging, energy production, mass detection, geodesy, foundational physics research, and a host of other fields. In many sensors, the signal takes the form of a changing qubit frequency, which is detected with an interference measurement. Unfortunately, environmental noise decoheres the qubit state, reducing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here we introduce a protocol for enhancing the sensitivity of a measurement of a qubit's frequency in the presence of decoherence. We use a continuous drive to stabilize one component of the qubit's Bloch vector, enhancing the effect of a small static frequency shift. We demonstrate our protocol on a superconducting qubit, enhancing SNR per measurement shot by 1.65$\times$ and SNR per qubit evolution time by 1.09$\times$ compared to standard Ramsey interferometry. We explore the protocol theoretically and numerically, finding maximum enhancements of 1.96$\times$ and 1.18$\times$, respectively. We also show that the protocol is robust to parameter miscalibrations. Our protocol provides an unconditional enhancement in signal-to-noise ratio compared to standard Ramsey interferometry. It requires no feedback and no extra control or measurement resources, and can be immediately applied in a wide variety of quantum computing and quantum sensor technologies to enhance their sensitivities.

We introduce deterministic benchmarking (DB), a protocol designed to identify the interplay of coherent and incoherent errors overlooked by randomized benchmarking (RB) and related benchmarking methods. DB provides a set of four parameters that characterize both incoherent and coherent errors in the single-qubit gate set. Furthermore, DB reveals asymmetries in gate performance induced by strong relaxation errors ($T_1$). We experimentally demonstrate DB using a superconducting transmon qubit and support these results with a simple analytical model and master equation simulations. We utilize a superconducting qubit processor to experimentally probe non-Markovian dynamics of an entangled qubit pair. We prepare an entangled state between two qubits and monitor the evolution of entanglement over time as one of the qubits interacts with a small quantum environment consisting of an auxiliary transmon qubit coupled to its readout cavity. We observe the collapse and revival of the entanglement as a signature of quantum memory effects in the environment. We then engineer the non-Markovianity of the environment by populating its readout cavity with thermal photons to show a transition from non-Markovian to Markovian dynamics, ultimately reaching a regime where the quantum Zeno effect creates a decoherence-free subspace that effectively stabilizes the entanglement between the qubits., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

We present a superconducting circuit device that provides active, on-demand, tunable dissipation on a target mode of the electromagnetic field. Our device is based on a tunable "dissipator" that can be made lossy when tuned into resonance with a broadband filter mode. When driven parametrically, this dissipator induces loss on any mode coupled to it with energy detuning equal to the drive frequency. We demonstrate the use of this device to reset a superconducting qubit's readout cavity after a measurement, removing photons with a characteristic rate above $50\ \mu\mathrm{s}^{-1}$. We also demonstrate that the dissipation can be driven constantly to simultaneously damp and cool the cavity, effectively eliminating thermal photon fluctuations as a relevant decoherence channel. We propose and analyze a protocol for stabilizing a maximally entangled state of two noninteracting qubits using active state-dependent feedback from a continuous two-qubit half-parity measurement in coordination with a concurrent, non-commuting dynamical decoupling drive. We demonstrate that such a drive can be simultaneous with the measurement and feedback, while also playing a key part in the feedback protocol itself. We show that robust stabilization with near-unit fidelity can be achieved even in the presence of realistic nonidealities, such as time delay in the feedback loop, imperfect state-tracking, inefficient measurements, dephasing from $1/f$-distributed qubit-frequency noise, and relaxation. We mitigate feedback-delay error by introducing a forward-state-estimation strategy in the feedback controller that tracks the effects of control signals already in transit. More generally, the steady state is globally attractive without the need for ancillas, regardless of the error state, in contrast to most known feedback and error correction schemes., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures

Quasiparticle (QP) effects play a significant role in the coherence and fidelity of superconducting quantum circuits. The Andreev bound states of high transparency Josephson junctions can act as low-energy traps for QPs, providing a mechanism for studying the dynamics and properties of both the QPs and the junction. We study the trapping and clearing of QPs from the Andreev bound states of epitaxial Al-InAs Josephson junctions incorporated in a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) galvanically shorting a superconducting resonator to ground. We use a neighboring voltage-biased Josephson junction to inject QPs into the circuit. Upon the injection of QPs, we show that we can trap and clear QPs when the SQUID is flux-biased. We examine effects of the microwave loss associated with bulk QP transport in the resonator, QP-related dissipation in the junction, and QP poisoning events. By monitoring the QP trapping and clearing in time, we study the dynamics of these processes and find a time-scale of few microseconds that is consistent with electron-phonon relaxation in our system and correlated QP trapping and clearing mechanisms. Our results highlight the QP trapping and clearing dynamics as well as the associated time-scales in high transparency Josephson junctions based fabricated on Al-InAs heterostructures.

We report continuous measurements of quasiparticles trapping and clearing from Andreev Bound States in aluminum nanobridge Josephson junctions integrated into a superconducting-qubit-like device. We find that trapping is well modeled by independent spontaneous emission events. Above 80 mK the clearing process is well described by absorption of thermal phonons, but other temperature-independent mechanisms dominate at low temperature. We find complex structure in the dependence of the low-temperature clearing rate on the Andreev Bound State energy. Our results shed light on quasiparticle behavior in qubit-like circuits.

Open quantum systems are a topic of intense theoretical research. The use of master equations to model a system's evolution subject to an interaction with an external environment is one of the most successful theoretical paradigms. General experimental tools to study different open system realizations have been limited, and so it is highly desirable to develop experimental tools which emulate diverse master equation dynamics and give a way to test open systems theories. In this paper we demonstrate a systematic method for engineering specific system-environment interactions and emulating master equations of a particular form using classical stochastic noise. We also demonstrate that non-Markovian noise can be used as a resource to extend the coherence of a quantum system and counteract the adversarial effects of Markovian environments., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures

Nonequilibrium quasiparticles are ubiquitous in superconducting electronics. These quasiparticles can trap in the internal Andreev bound states of a phase-biased Josephson junction, providing a mechanism for studying their presence and behavior. We characterize a quasiparticle trapping detector device based on a two-junction aluminum nanobridge superconducting quantum interference device incorporated into a transmission-line resonator. When flux-biased, distinct resonant frequencies develop depending on the trapped quasiparticle number. We demonstrate continuous detection of up to 3 trapped quasiparticles, with detection of a trapped quasiparticle with signal-to-noise ratio of 27 in 5 $\mu$s. We describe initial measurements of quasiparticle behavior and discuss the possible optimization and application of such detector devices.

We present high-resolution thermal diffusivity measurements on several near optimally doped electron- and hole-doped cuprate systems in a temperature range that passes through the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit, above which the quasiparticle picture fails. Our primary observations are that the inverse thermal diffusivity is linear in temperature and can be fitted to $D_Q^{-1}=aT+b$. The slope $a$ is interpreted through the Planckian relaxation time $\tau\approx\hbar/k_BT$ and a thermal diffusion velocity $v_B$, which is close, but larger than the sound velocity. The intercept $b$ represent a crossover diffusion constant that separates coherent from incoherent quasiparticles. These observations suggest that both phonons and electrons participate in the thermal transport, while reaching the Planckian limit for relaxation time., Comment: 6 pages main text, 4 pages supplementary material.
