Tsuga (hemlock) is a small genus of 10 extant species in the Pinaceae, with a disjunct distribution in East Asia and eastern and western North America. Reliable species‐level identification of Tsuga fossils depends on the discovery of seed cones with intact bracts, but such cones are rare in the fossil record. Here we describe a new fossil species of hemlock as T. weichangensis sp. nov. based on exquisitely preserved seed cones with nearly complete bracts from the Lower Miocene of Weichang, Hebei Province, North China. This fossil species displays a mosaic of characters between Tsuga and Nothotsuga. The well‐developed and slightly exserted bract scales of T. weichangensis are reminiscent of Nothotsuga, but other characters, such as nonleaved peduncles and tongue‐shaped bract scales, in addition to monosaccate pollen found at the same fossil locality, suggest an affinity closer to Tsuga. Cladistic analysis based on 15 morphological characters and a molecular backbone constraint supports the assignment of these fossil cones to Tsuga rather than Nothotsuga, and places the fossil species of T. weichangensis in an unresolved polytomy within the genus Tsuga. The occurrence of Tsuga seed cone fossils indicate the paleoclimate in the Miocene of Weichang was warmer and more humid than today's climate, which is consistent with the paleoclimate reconstructed by paleopalynology. Lycopsids are a minor component of current terrestrial herbaceous floras. However, lycopsid fossil diversity shows a great diversity and disparity including heterosporous woody plants, e.g. the giant isoetaleans that populated the extensive Pennsylvanian wetlands. The earliest known isoetaleans come from late Devonian localities from China. Here, we describe Lilingostrobus chaloneri gen. et sp. nov., a new isoetalean lycopsid from the Upper Devonian (Famennian) Xikuangshan Formation of China (Hunan Province, South China), which adds to the already impressive diversity of the Devonian lycopsids from China. Lilingostrobus shows an unusual combination of characters. This new plant is pseudoherbaceous, with a possible tufted habit, and consists of narrow axes with rare isotomies. The stem includes small quantities of secondary xylem. Each fertile axis bears one terminal strobilus comprising sporophylls ending in a very long upturned lamina. Microspores and putative megaspores have been found, but whether the plant has mono- or bisporangiate strobili is unknown. Importantly, our cladistic analysis identifies Lilingostrobus as a direct precursor of Isoetales, which provides new insights into the early evolution of lycopsids.

Summary: Buckwheat is an important crop which originated in China and spread widely across Eurasia. However, exactly where in China domestication took place remains controversial. Archaeological and palynological records suggest a longer cultivation history of buckwheat in northern China than in southwestern China, but this conflicts with phylogenetic evidence implicating southwestern China as the centre of origin and diversity of buckwheat.We investigate alternative methodologies for inferring the occurrence of buckwheat cultivation and suggest that relative abundance could provide a reliable measure for distinguishing between wild and cultivated buckwheat in both present‐day and fossil samples.Approximately 12 800‐yr palaeoecological record shows that Fagopyrum pollen occurred only infrequently before the early Holocene. As southwestern China entered the early agricultural period, c. 8000–7000 yr ago, a slight increase in abundance of Fagopyrum pollen was observed. Approximately 4000 yr ago, concurrent with the Pu minority beginning to develop dry‐land agriculture, the abundance of Fagopyrum pollen increased significantly, suggesting the cultivation of this crop. Fagopyrum pollen rose to a maximum value c. 1270 yr ago, suggesting an intensification of agricultural activity.These findings fill a gap in the Fagopyrum pollen record in southwestern China and provide new indications that early cultivation may have occurred in this region. The earliest Crocodylia from Asia have been represented so far only by alligatoroids and planocraniids. Although definitive crocodyloids are not known until the late Eocene, it has been hypothesized that Asiatosuchus -like basal crocodyloids originated in Asia before the late Palaeocene. In this paper, we describe a new fossil crocodyloid from the lower Palaeocene of Qianshan Basin, Anhui Province, China. The skull and lower jaw fragment exhibit several characteristics typical of juvenile crocodylians. They also display a combination of features not seen in any other taxon, warranting the erection of a new species and genus, Qianshanosuchus youngi gen. & sp. nov. Its affinities are tested in phylogenetic analyses based on two recent character matrices of Eusuchia. To assess the effect of juvenile characteristics on the outcome of the phylogenetic analyses, juvenile specimens of extant crocodylian taxa are analysed in the same way, showing that the effect of their ontogenetic stage on their placement in the tree is minimal. Our analyses point to a basal crocodyloid position for Q. youngi. With these findings, the presence of Crocodyloidea in Asia is extended to the early Palaeocene, 15–20 Myr earlier than formerly thought. Furthermore, our results corroborate previous hypotheses of a Palaeocene dispersal route of Asiatosuchus -like crocodyloids from Asia into Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
