6. Anion Effect on the CuII–Neocuproine Mediator and Its Electrocatalysts for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells: Polymeric Chalcogenides of PEDOT–PEDTT and [Ag2(SePh)2]n

Abstract

The synthetical methodology for the [Cu(dmp)2]2+/1+(dmp = 2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline; neocuproine) complexes has been systematically investigated by using various copper precursors, including CuCl2, Cu(NO3)2, and Cu(ClO4)2. After an anion exchange to trifluoromethanesulfonimide (TFSI), the tetra-coordinated CuII(dmp)2(TFSI)2-Cu(ClO4)2(7.43%) outperformed the penta-coordinated CuII(dmp)2(TFSI)(NO3)-Cu(NO3)2(4.30%) and CuII(dmp)2(TFSI)(Cl)-CuCl2. Polymeric chalcogenides, including a conducting copolymeric electrode of PEDOT–PEDTT [PEDOT = poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene); PEDTT = poly(3,4-ethylenedithiothiophene)] and a coordination polymeric electrode of silver bezeneselenolate ([Ag2(SePh)2]n; mithrene), are introduced as the electrocatalysts for [Cu(dmp)2]2+/1+for the first time. After optimization, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) based on carbon cloth (CC)/AgSePh-30 (10.18%) showed superior electrocatalytic ability compared to the benchmark CC/Pt (7.43%) due to numerous active sites provided by electron-donating Se atoms, high film roughness, and bottom-up 2D charge transfer routes. The DSSC based on CC/PEDTT-50 (10.38%) also outperformed CC/Pt due to numerous active sites provided by electron-donating S atoms and proper energy band structure. This work sheds light on the future design and synthesis in Cu-complex mediators and functional polymeric chalcogenides for high-performance DSSCs.

35. Bi-metallic [Cu/Co(6mna)2]n metal organic chalcogenolate frameworks as high-performance electro-catalysts for dye-sensitized solar cells: a ligand-assisted bottom-up synthesis.

Abstract

Mercaptonicotinate-based metal organic chalcogenolate frameworks (MOFs), including [Cu2(6mna)(6mn)NH4]n-NO3, [Co2(6mna)2]n-NO3, [Co2(6mna)2]n-Cl, [Cu/Co(6mna)2]n-NO3, and [Cu/Co(6mna)2]n-Cl (6mna = 6-mercaptonicotinic acid; 6mn = 6-mercaptonicotinate), were newly introduced as the electro-catalytic counter electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). By using a ligand-assisted bottom-up synthesis, these five types of MOF films were covalently bonded to a conducting substrate to deliver their intrinsic electro-catalytic ability without any additives. The DSSCs coupled with all the carbon cloth/MOF electrodes showed a superior solar-to-electricity conversion efficiency (9.4%–10.0%) to the cell with a traditional carbon cloth/Pt electrode (9.3%), demonstrating their outstanding electrochemical activities. Heterogeneous bi-metallic MOFs, [Cu/Co(6mna)2]n-NO3 and [Cu/Co(6mna)2]n-Cl, outperformed their mono-metallic counterparts by increasing film roughness/porosity and decreasing the activation energy for I−/I3−. Their remarkable electrochemical performance was attributed to the successful synergistic effect, where [Cu2(6mna)(6mn)NH4]n-NO3 provided facile charge transfer via its 2D (–Cu–S–)n planes, while [Co2(6mna)2]n supplied large surface area and multiple electro-catalytic active sites through its helical (–Co–S–)n chains. With the use of different redox mediators (iodide, Co-phenanthroline, and Cu-neocuproine), the optimal carbon cloth/[Cu/Co(6mna)2]n-Cl electrode also showed better electro-catalytic ability and long-term stability than carbon cloth/Pt. Under room light illumination, higher cell efficiencies were obtained at 1.0 klux (19.5% for an office), 3.0 klux (23.3% for a shopping window), and 6.0 klux (26.4% for a lampshade), revealing the potential of mercaptonicotinate-based bi-metallic MOFs to be applied in various electrochemical devices. 50. Computational comparison of bone cement and poly aryl-ether-ether-ketone spacer in single-segment posterior lumbar interbody fusion: a pilot study

Abstract

Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) with a spacer and posterior instrument (PI) via minimally invasive surgery (MIS) restores intervertebral height in degenerated disks. To align with MIS, the spacer has to be shaped with a slim geometry. However, the thin spacer increases the subsidence and migration after PLIF. This study aimed to propose a new lumbar fusion approach using bone cement to achieve a larger supporting area than that achieved by the currently used poly aryl-ether-ether-ketone (PEEK) spacer and assess the feasibility of this approach using a sawbone model. Furthermore, the mechanical responses, including the range of motion (ROM) and bone stress with the bone cement spacer were compared to those noted with the PEEK spacer by finite element (FE) simulation. An FE lumbar L3–L4 model with PEEK and bone cement spacers and PI was developed. Four fixing conditions were considered: intact lumbar L3–L4 segment, lumbar L3–L4 segment with PI, PEEK spacer plus PI, and bone cement spacer plus PI. Four kinds of 10-NM moments (flexion, extension, lateral bending, and rotation) and two different bone qualities (normal and osteoporotic) were considered. The bone cement spacer yielded smaller ROMs in extension and rotation than the PEEK spacer, while the ROMs of the bone cement spacer in flexion and lateral bending were slightly greater than with the PEEK spacer. Compared with the PEEK spacer, peak contact pressure on the superior surface of L4 with the bone cement spacer in rotation decreased by 74% (from 8.68 to 2.25 MPa) and 69.1% (from 9.1 to 2.82 MPa), respectively, in the normal and osteoporotic bone. Use of bone cement as a spacer with PI is a potential approach to decrease the bone stress in lumbar fusion and warrants further research.
