29. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the rete testis thickness: a promising approach to differentiate obstructive from nonobstructive azoospermia.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the ability of rete testis thickness (RTT) and testicular shear wave elastography (SWE) to differentiate obstructive azoospermia (OA) from nonobstructive azoospermia (NOA). We assessed 290 testes of 145 infertile males with azoospermia and 94 testes of 47 healthy volunteers at Shanghai General Hospital (Shanghai, China) between August 2019 and October 2021. The testicular volume (TV), SWE, and RTT were compared among patients with OA and NOA and healthy controls. The diagnostic performances of the three variables were evaluated using the receiver operating characteristic curve. The TV, SWE, and RTT in OA differed significantly from those in NOA (all P ≤ 0.001) but were similar to those in healthy controls. Males with OA and NOA were similar at TVs of 9–11 cm3 (P = 0.838), with sensitivity, specificity, Youden index, and area under the curve of 50.0%, 84.2%, 0.34, and 0.662 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.502–0.799), respectively, for SWE cut-off of 3.1 kPa; and 94.1%, 79.2%, 0.74, and 0.904 (95% CI: 0.811–0.996), respectively, for RTT cut-off of 1.6 mm. The results showed that RTT performed significantly better than SWE in differentiating OA from NOA in the TV overlap range. In conclusion, ultrasonographic RTT evaluation proved a promising diagnostic approach to differentiate OA from NOA, particularly in the TV overlap range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

40. Study on Dust Turbulence-Chemical Agglomeration for Electrostatic Precipitation Technology

Abstract

Due to the turbulent mixing between agglomeration agent and dust, the number of collisions per unit time between particles and droplets increases with the particle size in the process of chemical agglomeration, and the agglomeration efficiency increases accordingly. Turbulent agglomeration can promote the agglomeration effect of subsequent chemical agglomeration by strengthening the collision between particles and agglomerant droplets. The author used chemical agglomeration and turbulent mixing to cooperate in order to improve the efficiency of dust removal. Turbulent mixing can promote chemical agglomeration from agglomeration effect and dust removal efficiency, which can greatly improve electric dust removal technologyTurbulent mixing is the most intense at the inlet box position, and the agglomeration effect is the best. Turbulent mixing synergistic effect has an effect on dust removal efficiency. Compared with the three curves, it can be seen that the dust removal efficiency increases rapidly with the increase of agglomeration concentration, the curve trend changes obviously. The dust removal efficiency can reach 98.36 % and it is the highest in the middle section when the wind speed is greater than 11.2m/s. Through the experiment, the turbulent mixing and chemical coagulation method has a good application prospect in the electrostatic precipitators.

Abstract

Dengue fever virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that poses a serious risk to human health. Aedes albopictus is a widely distributed vector of dengue fever in China. Based on the impact of physiological activity, the microbiome in A. albopictus will provide a novel environment-friendly approach to control DENV transmission. We performed metagenomic sequencing on A. albopictus before and after exposure to DENV blood meal to detect microbiome variation of A. albopictus with different susceptibilities to DENV. The dominant phyla in A. albopictus microbiome were Proteobacteria and Ascomycota, and the dominant genera were Aspergillus and Metarhizium. Gammaproteobacteria bacterium, Lactobacillus harbinensis, and Neurospora crassa differed significantly after DENV infection. There were 15 different microorganisms found to be involved in mosquito immunity and metabolism, such as Alphaproteobacteria bacterium, Methyloglobulus morosus, and Shigella sonnei, which might have an impact on the DENV susceptibility of A. albopictus. It was hypothesized that the lack of specific bacteria may lead to increased susceptibility of A. albopictus to DENV. Interventions in the microbiome composition or specific bacteria of A. albopictus may affect the susceptibility to DENV and control the mosquito-borne diseases efficiently.

50. Microbe community composition differences of hand skin on similar lifestyle volunteers: a small-scale study.

Abstract

Aims Human skin is the first barrier against pathogens and environmental hazards and the highest contact frequency occurs with the hands. Environmental and personal metabolic factors may affect skin microbes. This study was conducted to clarify the diversity in the skin microbial community that was mainly due to individual skin metabolites rather than lifestyle and environmental factors. Methods and Results Skin microbiota samples were collected from 11 volunteers who met similar lifestyle inclusion criteria. The V3-V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene was amplified. After library construction and sequencing, we compared the composition and diversity of the hand skin microbiota in different sexes and BMI groups with bioinformation analysis. The whole sequence data were annotated as 42 phyla, 538 families, and 1215 genera. Four dominant phyla accounted for 97% of the total including Actinobacteriota (50.18%), Firmicutes (23.85%), Proteobacteria (21.64%) and Bacteroidota (2.05%). The genera that were detected in all subjects with high relative abundance were Cutibacterium, Staphylococcus, Corynebacterium, Streptococcus, Lawsonella, Enhydrobacter, Escherichia-Shigella, Asaia and Micrococcus. Conclusions The diversity and richness of the microbiota of male hand skin in our study was higher than that of females. Interestingly, Cutibacterium, Staphylococcus , and Corynebacterium might serve as important skin microbiota to distinguish sexes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
