Inflammation is much more intrinsic to hernia then is what is generally appreciated. The occurrence of hernias is associated with swelling, stress and inflammation. Surgery remains an important intervention to treat hernias and for many years, post-surgical levels of inflammatory cytokines have been evaluated to compare the different strategies for their comparative advantages. All surgical procedures elicit some sort of inflammatory response and moreover the meshes used for hernia repair are also associated with elevated inflammatory response, although some favor predominantly a pro-inflammatory response while the other meshes favor anti-inflammatory response. An estimated more than 90% of hernia repairs involve some meshes with polypropylene considered as the gold standard. Efforts are underway to modulate polypropylene meshes associated inflammation through use of alternative materials as well as modifications to polypropylene meshes themselves. In the last one decade, miRNAs have entered hernia research and the data on a role of miRNAs in different hernias is slowly emerging, providing the first evidence of epigenetics in hernia. Some reports are connecting miRNAs with inflammation in hernia. All these aspects, such as, surgery-related to mesh-related inflammation as well as miRNA-related inflammation, are discussed in this article to present an up-to-date information on the topic. Background: Previous studies, predominantly in Western individuals, have reported weight gain or weight loss are related to the increased depressive symptoms at all ages, but no study of depressive symptoms has examined its relation to actual (not just self-reported) weight changes in the middle-aged and older adults. Evidence of the relationship in older Asian individuals remains sparse. The study aimed to examine the relationship between weight changes and incidence of depressive symptoms in a nationally representative sample of community-dwelling older Asians. Method: Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), which included 17,284 adults aged 45 years. Participants were followed every two years using a face-to-face, computer-aided personal interview (CAPI) and structured questionnaire. We excluded participants with no follow-up data. The numbers of individuals who completed both the baseline and follow-up surveys were 3118 for the short-term (two years from 2011–2013) and the long-term (four years from 2011–2015). Additionally, to associate weight change with subsequent depressive symptoms, we also included 2472 participants without depressive symptom in 2013 and observed the incidence of depressive symptom in 2015 (subsequent term from 2013–2015). Finally, weight changes were classified as loss > -3%, stable-3–3%, gain3-6%, gain6-9%, and gain > 9%. Multivariable-adjusted cox regression in the study were used to assess the hazard ratios (HRs) of each weight change category. Results: The incidence of depressive symptoms was 20.72% in the 2011–2013, 27.04% in the 2011–2015, and 23.02% in 2013–2015. Weight loss > 3% for all intervals was associated with higher depressive symptoms than stable weight during the 2011–2013 [1.305(1.031,1.651)] among the total populations. When stratified by sex, the results in males and females were different from those in the total population [females:1.389(0.997, 1.935); males:1.263(0.902, 1.767)]. Weight loss > 3% for intervals was associated with higher depressive symptoms than stable weight during the 2013–2015[1.643(1.140, 2.368)] among the males and its effect was also stronger for the total in 2011–2013. Moreover, there was no significant association between weight gain and incident depressive symptom, and no significant interaction effect in terms of the sex*weight changes. Conclusion: Our findings could inform health promotion interventions to body-weight management aimed at improving the health of the middle-aged and older adults, particularly in the total people with short-term weight loss and males with subsequent term weight loss. Chiral materials with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) are currently attracting great attention for their wide applications in bioresponsive imaging, 3D displays, and storage of information. Herein, CPL‐active enantiomorphic hybrids (R)‐ and (S)‐C6H15Cl2NO⋅SbCl5 are obtained by self‐assembling chiral R/S‐(3‐chloro‐2‐hydroxypropyl)trimethylammonium chloride with antimony(III) chloride, giving a 0D structure with SbCl5 pyramids isolated by (3‐chloro‐2‐hydroxypropyl)trimethylammonium chloride cations. The formed enantiomers exhibit brilliant orange emission peaked at 604 nm with photoluminescence quantum yield as high as 71.2%, originating from the self‐trapped exciton emission demonstrated by photophysical characterization. Due to the existence of chiral organic cations, the enantiomers exhibit strong chiral‐optical properties with mirror‐image circular dichroism signals in ground state and obvious CPL activity with the dissymmetry factor glum of 2.5 × 10−4 and −1.6 × 10−4 for R‐type and S‐type, respectively. As low‐dimensional lead‐free hybrids with higher stability and lower toxicity than those of three‐dimensional lead perovskites, organic antimony(III) halides show great application potential in opt‐electronic field owing to diverse topologies along with exceptional optical properties. We report herein an antimony(III) hybrid (MePPh3)2SbCl5 with a zero‐dimensional (0D) structure, which exhibits brilliant orange emission peaked at 593 nm with near‐unity photoluminescent quantum yield (99.4 %). The characterization of photophysical properties demonstrates that the broadband emission with a microsecond lifetime (3.24 μs) arises from self‐trapped emission (STE). Electrically driven organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on neat and doped films of (MePPh3)2SbCl5 were fabricated. The doped devices show significant improvement in comparison to non‐doped OLEDs. Owing to the much improved surface morphology and balanced carrier transport in light‐emitting layers of doped devices, the peak luminance, current efficiency (CE) and external quantum efficiency (EQE) are boosted from 82 cd m−2 to 3500 cd m−2, 1.1 cd A−1 to 6.8 cd A−1, and 0.7 % to 3.1 % relative to non‐doped devices, respectively. Triazole polycarboxylic acid ligands are widely employed in the construction of MOFs due to their strong coordination ability and flexible coordination modes. In this work, three novel complexes (Pb(MCTCA)(H2O) (1), Co(HMCTCA)2(H2O)2 (2) and Cu(HMCTCA)2(H2O)2 (3)) based on the H2MCTCA ligand (5-methyl-1-(4-carboxyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxylic acid) were successfully synthesized under hydrothermal conditions, respectively. X-ray single crystal structure analysis shows that complex 1 is a 3D network structure, where the central metal Pb(II) is six coordinated to form deformed triangular prism geometry. The complexes 2 and 3 are both 2D layer supramolecular structures connected through intermolecular hydrogen, where the central metals (Co/Cu) are six coordinated to form octahedral configuration geometry. Based on functional properties, it is found that complex 1 exhibits excellent detection ability for small-molecule drugs (azithromycin, colchicine and balsalazide disodium) and actinide cations (Th4+ and UO22+) within a lower concentration range without interference from other components. In particular, the detection limits of three small-molecule drugs are all lower than 0.30 μM. In addition, complexes 2 and 3 exhibited excellent catalytic reduction performance toward p-nitrophenol (PNP), with a reduction efficiency exceeding 98%. Objectives. To assess the extent of interaction between body mass index (BMI) and triglyceride (TG) level and its effects on blood pressure (BP) in elderly individuals in China. Design. Cross-sectional study. Setting. Data were taken from a cross-sectional study called the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Participants. The analytic sample included 3629 subjects aged 45 to 96 years. Main Outcome Measurements. Data were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, which is a cross-sectional study. Age-adjusted partial Pearson’s correlation test was used to compare various characteristics and BP. Adjusted associations were first used as linear regression models, as appropriate. Then, general linear models adjusted for related potential confounders were used to examine the synergistic effects of BMI and TG level on BP. Finally, a binary logistic regression model adjusted for confounding factors was used to examine the association between BMI or TG level and hypertension. Results. Age-adjusted partial Pearson’s correlation coefficient showed that the TG level was positively correlated with both systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) in both men and women with BMI < 24.0 kg/m2; however, TG level was positively correlated with DBP in women with BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m2 but not with DBP in men with BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m2. Multiple linear regression analysis showed that BMI level was significantly and positively associated with both SBP and DBP in men and women with BMI < 24.0 kg/m2, and TG level was significantly and positively associated with SBP in women with BMI < 24.0 kg/m2, independent of other confounding factors. A general linear model analysis with adjustment for confounding factors (age, educational level, marital status, current residence, smoking, eating habits, taking activities, antidiabetic medication, antihypertensive therapy, fasting plasma glucose [FPG], low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [LDL-C], estimated glomerular filtration rate [eGFR], and serum uric acid [SUA]) showed no interaction between BMI and TG level and SBP (men, β = 0.572, P = 0.845; women, β = 0.122, P = 0.923) and DBP (men, β = -0.373, P = 0.810; women, β = 0.272, P = 0.828). A binary logistic regression model analysis with adjustment for confounding factors (age, educational level, marital status, current residence, smoking, drinking, eating habits, taking activities, major accidental injury, physical activity, history of cardiovascular disease, history of liver disease, antilipidemic medication, antidiabetic medication, antihypertensive therapy, FPG, LDL-C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol [HDL-C], eGFR, and SUA) showed that overweight and obese men and women were more likely to have hypertension (men: odds ratio [OR] = 1.781, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.393–2.277; women: OR = 1.653, 95% CI = 1.330–2.055) and women with high TG were more likely to have hypertension (OR = 1.558, 95% CI = 1.219–1.992). Conclusion. An interactive effect of BMI and TG level on BP was not observed in either men or women; however, independent effects of BMI on BP were observed in both men and women, and an association between TG level and hypertension was observed in women. The NRC selenium (Se) requirement for broiler chicks is 0.15 μg Se/g diet, based primarily on weight gain and feed intake studies reported in 1986. To determine Se requirements in today’s rapidly growing broiler chick, day-old male chicks were fed Se-deficient basal diets supplemented with graded levels of Se (0, 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0 μg Se/g) as Na2SeO3 (5/treatment). Diets contained 15X the vitamin E requirement, and there were no gross signs of Se-deficiency. At 29 d, Se-deficient chicks weighed 62% of Se-supplemented chicks; 0.025 μg Se/g reversed this effect, indicating a minimum Se requirement of 0.025 μg Se/g diet for growth for male broiler chicks. Enzyme activities in Se-deficient chicks for plasma GPX3, liver and gizzard GPX1, and liver and gizzard GPX4 decreased dramatically to 3, 2, 5, 10 and 5%, respectively, of Se-adequate levels, with minimum Se requirements of 0.10–0.13 μg Se/g, and with defined plateaus above these levels. Pancreas GPX1 and GPX4 activities, however, lacked defined plateaus, with breakpoints at 0.3 μg Se/g. qPCR measurement of all 24 chicken selenoprotein transcripts, plus SEPHS1, found that SEPP1 in liver, GPX3 in gizzard, and SEPP1, GPX3 and SELK in pancreas were expressed at levels comparable to housekeeping transcripts. Only 33%, 25% and 50% of selenoprotein transcripts were down-regulated significantly by Se deficiency in liver, gizzard and pancreas, respectively. No transcripts could be used as biomarkers for supernutritional Se status. For export selenoproteins SEPP1 and GPX3, tissue distribution, high expression and Se-regulation clearly indicate unique Se metabolism, which may underlie tissues targeted by Se deficiency. Based on enzyme activities in liver, gizzard, and plasma, the minimum Se requirement in today’s broiler chick is 0.15 μg Se/g diet; pancreas data indicate that the Se requirement should be raised to 0.2 μg Se/g diet to provide a margin of safety. Three new chalcones, xanthoangelols K–M ( 1 – 3 ), together with 19 known compounds were isolated from the stems of Angelica keiskei Koidzumi, a well-known rejuvenated and anti-diabetic plant originated from Japan. The structures of compounds 1 – 3 were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic data and Mosher’s method. All compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP1B). Among them, six chalcones, xanthoangelol K ( 1 ), xanthoangelol ( 4 ), xanthoangelol F ( 5 ), 4-hydroxyderricin ( 6 ), xanthoangelol D ( 7 ), xanthoangelol E ( 8 ), and a coumarin, methoxsalen ( 17 ), showed strong PTP1B inhibitory effect with IC 50 values of 0.82, 1.97, 1.67, 2.47, 3.97, 1.43, and 2.53 μg/mL, respectively. A kinetic study revealed that compound 1 inhibited PTP1B with characteristics typical of a competitive inhibitor. Molecular docking simulations elucidated that ring B of 1 may anchor in a pocket of PTP1B and the molecule is stabilized by hydrogen bonds with Arg47, Asp48, and π–π interaction with Phe182 of PTP1B. Three MM-MOFs based on the reaction of H 6 TTHA ligand, Ln(NO 3) 3 ·6H 2 O (Ln=Eu, Sm, Dy) and Zn(NO 3) 2 ·6H 2 O under hydrothermal conditions. Complex 1 had the fluorescence sensing abilities for metal ions, anions, and organic nitro compounds. It was worth noting that complex 1 showed prominent sensitivity for TNP, the detection limit was as low as 1.14 μM. In this work, we constructed three MM-MOFs, namely [Zn 3 Eu 2 (TTHA) 2 (H 2 O) 6 ]·6H 2 O (1), [Zn 3 Sm 2 (TTHA) 2 (H 2 O) 6 ]·2H 2 O (2) and [ZnDy(HTTHA)(H 2 O) 4 ]·2H 2 O (3) by the reaction of H 6 TTHA ligand (H 6 TTHA = 1, 3, 5-triazine-2, 4, 6-triamine hexaacetic acid), Ln(NO 3) 3 ·6H 2 O (Ln = Eu, Sm, Dy) and Zn(NO 3) 2 ·6H 2 O under hydrothermal conditions. The complexes 1 – 2 were a 3D microporous structure and complex 3 formed a 3D network structure. Furthermore, complex 1 exhibited excellent fluorescence properties. We explored the fluorescence sensing abilities of complex 1 for metal ions, anions, and organic nitro compounds. The experimental results showed that complex 1 could sensitively and efficiently detect Fe3+, Cr 2 O 7 2- ions and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP). Abstract: Extensive research has indicated that the electrostatic attraction between polysaccharides and proteins on the oil–water interface can improve the stability of emulsions. However, this electrostatic effect will be weakened or even eliminated as the solution pH or ionic strength of emulsions change, resulting in the shedding of the polysaccharide layer. We prepared primary oil-in-water emulsions at pH 7.0 using whey protein isolate (WPI) as an emulsifier and then beet pectin was added to form secondary emulsions. After the pH of emulsions was adjusted to 4.0 to promote electrostatic attraction between the beet pectin molecules and the protein-coated droplets, horseradish peroxidase was added to generate a cross-linked beet pectin coating. Results show that stable emulsions coated with WPI and cross-linked beet pectin interfaces could be formed. The sensitivity of the emulsions to the environmental stresses of pH changes, ions addition, thermal processing and freezing was also characterized in this work. Our results support the view that cross-linked beet pectin improves the stability of emulsions and is superior to simple deposition on the surface of lipid droplets. Wilfolides A ( 1 ) and B ( 2 ), two rare humulanolides with an unusual bicyclo[6.3.0]undecane core and an adjoining butyrolactone moiety, were isolated from the roots of Cynanchum wilfordii . Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analysis, and the absolute configurations were confirmed by X-ray crystallography using Cu Kα radiation. This is the first Letter of humulanolides from the family Apocynaceae. Compound 1 exhibited weak acetylcholinesterase inhibitory activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Well-ordered self-assembled SrTiO3 thin film, as a template for complex oxide quantum wires, was fabricated on LaAlO3 (100) single-crystal substrates with laser molecular beam epitaxy. The self-assembled growth was in situ monitored by reflective high-energy electron diffraction. The morphology evolutions of the films as a function of thickness were studied by ex situ atomic force microscopy. As the thickness of the films increased from 3.875 to 46.5nm gradually, the compressive stress-induced SrTiO3 films exhibited a periodic well-ordered ripple structure, which formed a unique nanoassembled template for the fabrication of quantum wires. Small-angle X-ray scattering technique was employed to investigate the structure. Symmetric satellite peaks were discovered, indicating the well-ordered superstructure. In contrast, the similar superstructure was not observed during the growth of the tensile stress-induced LaAlO3 films on SrTiO3 substrates. The compressive stress was considered as the main reason of the self-assembled growth, and systematical elucidation about strain mechanism was discussed. These results might provide an efficient method for the controllable formation of well-aligned template of quantum wire for complex oxide with desirable structure via proper modulation of strains. Pseudorabies virus (PRV) is an acute infectious disease characterized by neurological and respiratory symptoms. In order to have a better understanding of the current prevalence of PRV in northeastern China, a strain of PRV was isolated by us. Then, protein structure analysis and pathogenicity testing of the virus were performed to give insight into the characterization of the isolated PRV strains. In this study, the PRV strain named CH/HLJPRVJ/2023 was isolated and identified. Genome-wide phylogenetic analysis shows CH/HLJPRVJ/2023 and HeN1 have higher homology. The CH/HLJPRVJ/2023 strain had the highest homology with HeN1 strain (97.3%) and the lowest homology with Bartha-K61 (89.2%). Recombinant evolution analysis shows CH/HLJPRVJ/2023 shows many variants in OBP, AN, UL21, UL17, VP11/12, and VP1/2 fragments, which predict its unique genetically. VP1/2, an effector protein of capsid transport and neuroinvasion, has mutations and deletions in its amino acids, which cause changes in the protein conformation of CH/HLJPRVJ/2023. Besides the typical neurologic and respiratory lesions, infection with highly pathogenic CH/HLJPRVJ/2023 can lead to damage to the colonic villi and colonic barrier in piglets. This study will provide a basis for knowledge about the prevalence, genetic evolution, and vaccine optimization of endemic PRV strains in northeastern China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) generated by geomagnetic disturbances (GMD) during strong magnetic storms may trigger chain failures in power systems. In this paper, a critical node identification method based on the improved LeaderRank algorithm considering the effects of geomagnetic storms is proposed. A chain fault identification process based on the fragility theory of complex systems is proposed to determine the initial fault line by critical nodes and simulate the fault development process to obtain the accident chain set. The effectiveness of the method is verified by using the IEEE RTS79 node system as an example. The research results show that the method can reflect the critical nodes and accident chain set of power systems under different geomagnetic storm effects, and the research results can provide a reference for geomagnetic storm disaster quantification, assessment, and prevention. Stress-induced intestinal epithelial injury (IEI) and a delay in repair in infancy are predisposing factors for refractory gut diseases in adulthood, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Hence, it is necessary to develop appropriate mitigation methods for mammals when experiencing early-life stress (ELS). Weaning, as we all know, is a vital procedure that all mammalian newborns, including humans, must go through. Maternal separation (MS) stress in infancy (regarded as weaning stress in animal science) is a commonly used ELS paradigm. Drinking silicon-rich alkaline mineral water (AMW) has a therapeutic effect on enteric disease, but the specific mechanisms involved have not been reported. Herein, we discover the molecular mechanism by which silicon-rich AMW repairs ELS-induced IEI by maintaining intestinal stem cell (ISC) proliferation and differentiation through the glucagon-like peptide (GLP)2–Wnt1 axis. Mechanistic study showed that silicon-rich AMW activates GLP2-dependent Wnt1/β-catenin pathway, and drives ISC proliferation and differentiation by stimulating Lgr5+ ISC cell cycle passage through the G1–S-phase checkpoint, thereby maintaining intestinal epithelial regeneration and IEI repair. Using GLP2 antagonists (GLP23−33) and small interfering RNA (SiWnt1) in vitro, we found that the GLP2–Wnt1 axis is the target of silicon-rich AMW to promote intestinal epithelium regeneration. Therefore, silicon-rich AMW maintains intestinal epithelium regeneration through the GLP2–Wnt1 axis in piglets under ELS. Our research contributes to understanding the mechanism of silicon-rich AMW promoting gut epithelial regeneration and provides a new strategy for the alleviation of ELS-induced IEI. Perovskite heteroepitaxy was investigated under various conditions using laser molecular beam epitaxy. Well-controlled BaTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructure was studied with in situ reflective high energy electron diffraction and ex situ atomic force microscopy, x-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. The growth mode map of BaTiO3 thin films was obtained as a function of substrate temperature under 600 °C for various laser repetition rates. The effective activation energy of surface migration was determined to be 0.33 eV. A mechanism of surface migration in BaTiO3 heteroepitaxy was described for a basic understanding of atomic-scale controlled preparation of ferroelectric heterostructures at low temperature. Oxygen diffusion at the SrTiO3/Si interface was analyzed. A method called temperature gradient modulation growth was introduced to control oxygen diffusion at the interface of SrTiO3/Si. Nanoscale multilayers were grown at different temperatures at the initial growing stage of films. Continuous growth of SrTiO3 films was followed to deposit on the grown sacrificial layers. The interface and crystallinity of SrTiO3/Si were investigated by in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction measurements. It has been shown that the modulated multilayers may help suppress the interfacial diffusion, and therefore improve SrTiO3 thin film properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study found that drinking alkaline mineral water confers diarrhea resistance in maternally separated piglets by maintaining intestinal epithelial regeneration via the brain-microbe-gut axis. The improvement in gut microbiota composition and function maintains intestinal epithelial regeneration by activating Wnt/β-catenin signaling to repair damaged intestinal mucosa and interrupted ISC differentiation. The maternally separated (MS) piglet (newly weaned piglet) is an excellent model to investigate the treatment of diarrhea in infants. Drinking alkaline mineral water has the potential to be therapeutic in gastrointestinal disorders, particularly diarrhea, but the supporting evidence from system studies and the mechanisms involved have yet to be reported. This study aims to determine whether drinking alkaline mineral water confers diarrhea resistance in MS piglets under weaning stress and what the fundamental mechanisms involved are. MS piglets were used to create a stress-induced intestinal disorder-diarrhea susceptibility model. A total of 240 MS piglets were randomly divided into two groups (6 pens/group and 20 piglets/pen). IPEC-J2 cell line was used for in vitro evaluation. An alkaline mineral complex (AMC) water was employed, and its effect on the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis, gut microbes, gut morphology, and intestinal epithelial cell (IEC) proliferation and differentiation were investigated using a variety of experimental methodology. AMC water reduced diarrhea rate in MS piglets by inhibiting the HPA axis, ameliorating gut microbiota structure, and stimulating IEC proliferation and differentiation. Apparently, the brain-microbe-gut axis is linked with AMC water conferring diarrhea resistance in piglets. Mechanistically, AMC water decreased stress hormones (COR and Hpt) secretion by suppressing HPA axis, which then increased the abundance of beneficial gut microbes; accordingly, maintained the proliferation of IEC and promoted the differentiation of intestinal stem cells (ISC) into goblet cell and Paneth cell by activating the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway. In the absence of gut microbiota (in vitro), AMC activated the LPS-induced Wnt/β-catenin signaling inhibition in IPEC-J2 cells and significantly increased the number of Lgr5 + cells, whereas had no effect on IPEC-J2 differentiation. Drinking alkaline mineral water confers diarrhea resistance in MS piglets by maintaining intestinal epithelial regeneration via the brain-microbe-gut axis; thus, this study provides a potential prevention strategy for young mammals at risk of diarrhea. BACKGROUND: Cadmium (Cd), known as a vital contaminant in the environment, penetrates the blood–brain barrier and accumulates in the cerebrum. Acute toxicosis of Cd, which leads to lethal cerebral edema, intracellular accumulation and cellular dysfunction, remains to be illuminated with regard to the exact molecular mechanism of cerebral toxicity. Resveratrol (RES), present in the edible portions of numerous plants, is a simply acquirable and correspondingly less toxic natural compound with neuroprotective potential, which provides some theoretical bases for antagonizing Cd‐induced cerebral toxicity. RESULTS: This work was executed to research the protective effects of RES against Cd‐induced toxicity in chicken cerebrum. Markedly, these lesions were increased in the Cd group, which also exhibited a thinner cortex, reduced granule cells, vacuolar degeneration, and an enlarged medullary space in the cerebrum. Furthermore, Cd induced CYP450 enzyme metabolism disorders by disrupting the nuclear xenobiotic receptor response (NXRs), enabling the cerebrum to reduce the ability to metabolize exogenous substances, eventually leading to Cd accumulation. Meanwhile, accumulated Cd promoted oxidative damage and synergistically promoted the damage to neurons and glial cells. CONCLUSION: RES initiated NXRs (especially for aromatic receptor and pregnancy alkane X receptor), decreasing the expression of CYP450 genes, changing the content of CYP450, maintaining CYP450 enzyme normal activities, and exerting antagonistic action against the Cd‐induced abnormal response of nuclear receptors. Male infertility is a multifactorial pathological condition and may be a harbinger of future health. Phthalates are ubiquitous environmental contaminants that have been implicated in the global decline in male fertility. Among them, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is the most prevalently used. Lycopene (LYC) is a possible preventive and therapeutic agent for male infertility owing to its antioxidant properties. The blood-testis barrier (BTB) is formed between Sertoli cells where it creates a unique microenvironment for spermatogenesis. We hypothesize that phthalate caused male infertility and LYC plays an important role in phthalate-induced male fertility disorders. Hematoxylin-eosin (H&E) staining, ultrastructure observation, and fluorescence microscopy were used to examine the morphological changes. RNA-Seq, and western blotting were conducted to detect gene and protein levels. Routine testing for sperm morphology and sperm-egg binding assay were conducted to examine the morphological structure and function of sperm. Cell scratch assay and transepithelial electrical resistance (TER) were used to detect cell migration capacity and barrier integrity. In vivo experiments, we showed that LYC prevented DEHP-induced impairment of BTB integrity, which provided a guarantee for the smooth progress of spermatogenesis. LYC improved DEHP-induced change in sperm parameters and fertilization ability. Subsequent in vitro experiments, LYC alleviated MEHP-induced disruption of intercellular junctions in mouse Spermatogonia cells (GC-1 cells) and mouse Sertoli cells (TM4 cells). In MEHP-induced BTB impairment models of Sertoli cells, treatment with LYC or overexpressing connexin-43 (Cx43) promoted cell migration capacity and normalized BTB integrity. Cx43 knockdown inhibited cell migration capacity and perturbed BTB reassembly in LYC preventing DEHP-induced BTB impairment. Abstract This research employed an in-situ growth method to fabrication of multi-walled nanotubes (MWCNTs)/Fe 3 O 4 electromagnetic absorber. Such a binary material system is featured with good impedance matching behavior and moderate attenuation ability, thus exhibits excellent electromagnetic absorption properties. The results reveal that MWCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 exhibits distinct polarization relaxation phenomenon which inducted by interface polarization. This intensity of interface polarization is tunable by controlling the contact area of Fe 3 O 4 and MWCNTs. Due to the contribution of interface polarization loss behavior, the MWCNTs/Fe 3 O 4 sample achieves a wide band electromagnetic absorption property which the frequency region with RL < −10 dB can covers 5.7 GHz at 1.5 mm. The method of utilizing interface strategy to boost dielectric loss ability has an efficient way to gain wide band electromagnetic absorber. The continuous challenge of existing vaccine systems by porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) variant strains in recent years, it caused significant economic losses in the global swine industry. A PEDV virulent strain CH/HLJBQL/2022 was successfully isolated in China in this study. A genome-wide based phylogenetic analysis suggests that CH/HLJBQL/2022 belongs to the GII subtype, and 96.3%–99.6% homology existed in the whole genomes of other strains. For the first time, simultaneous mutations of four amino acids were found in the highly conserved membrane (M) and nucleocapsid (N) proteins, as well as five amino acid mutations that differed from the vast majority of strains in the spike (S) protein. Mutations in the M and S proteins were found to produce coils with different angles by building 2D and 3D structural models. Epitope analysis indicated that the isolates produced specific changes and that the transmembrane function of the M protein had not been affected. In addition, typing markers exist during strain evolution, but isolates are using the fusion of specific amino acids from multiple variant strains to add additional features, as also demonstrated by protein alignments and 3D models of numerous subtype strains. These results suggest that aa mutations in the M and S proteins may have changed the structure and antigenic epitope of the isolates and PEDV is evolving again on the basis of variants that have been found to counteract the immune network of the new vaccine. Background: Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) variant strains cause great economic losses to the global swine industry. However, vaccines do not provide sufficient protection against currently circulating strains due to viral mutations. This study traced the molecular characteristics of the most recent isolates in China and aimed to provide a basis for the prevention and treatment of PEDV. Methods: We obtained samples from a Chinese diarrheal swine farm in 2022. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction and immunofluorescence were used to determine the etiology, and the full-length PEDV genome was sequenced. Nucleotide similarity was calculated using MEGA to construct a phylogenetic tree and DNASTAR. Mutant amino acids were aligned using DNAMAN and modeled by SWISS-MODEL, Phyre2 and FirstGlance in JMOL for protein tertiary structure simulation. Additionally, TMHMM was used for protein function prediction. Results: A PEDV virulent strain CH/HLJJS/2022 was successfully isolated in China. Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic environmental contaminant, which bio-accumulate in animals through the food chain. Cerebellum is one of the primary target organs for Cd exposure. In this study, we established a chronic Cd exposure model; 60 chickens were treated with Cd (0 mg/kg, 35 mg/kg, 70 mg/kg) for 90 days. Clinical manifestations indicated that the chicken was depressed and has unstable gait under Cd exposure. Histopathological results indicated that Cd induced neuronal shrunken and indistinct nucleoli, and the number of Purkinje cells decreased significantly. Cerebellar metal contents were analyzed by ICP-MS. We found that Cd caused Cd and Cu accumulation and decreased the content of Se, Fe, and Zn, suggesting that Cd disturbed metal homeostasis. Besides, Cd treatment group also showed high levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) content and inhibited selenoprotein transcriptome, suggesting that Cd exposure resulted in oxidative stress. Notably, low-dose Cd exposure activated MTF1 mRNA and protein expression and its target metal-responsive genes, including MT1, MT2, DMT1, ZIP8, ZIP10, TF, and ATP7B which indicate cellular adaptive response against Cd-induced damage. On the other hand, 70 mg/kg Cd downregulated MTF1-mediated metal response, which was involved in Cd-induced cerebellar injury in chicken. In conclusion, our data demonstrated that molecular mechanisms are associated with Cd-induced cerebellar injury due to disturbing MTF1-mediated metal response. This study indicated that the cerebellum is one of the target organs of Cd-induced toxicity. Additionally, Cd exposure induced metal dyshomeostasis in chicken's cerebellum, whereas this study found that lower level of Cd dose triggered the activation of the cytoprotective mechanism through activating the expression of MTF1 which regulate MT1, MT2, DMT1, ZIP8, ZIP10, TF, and ATP7B expressions in cerebellum. However, MTF1-mediated metal response was inhibited under the exposure of high dose of Cd, which ultimately caused cerebellar injury. In the modern poultry industry, newly hatched chicks are unavoidably transported from the hatching to the rearing foster. Stress caused by multiple physical and psychological stressors during transportation is particularly harmful to the liver. Astragalus polysaccharide (APS) possesses multiple benefits against hepatic metabolic disorders. Given that transport stress could disturb hepatic glucolipid metabolism and the role of APS in metabolic regulation, we speculated that APS could antagonize transport stress-induced disorder of hepatic glucolipid metabolism. Firstly, newly hatched chicks were transported for 0, 2, 4, and 8 h, respectively. Subsequently, to further investigate the effects of APS on transport stress-induced hepatic glucolipid metabolism disturbance, chicks were pretreated with water or APS and then subjected to transport treatment. Our study suggested that APS could relieve transport stress-induced lipid deposition in liver. Meanwhile, transport stress also induced disturbances in glucose metabolism, reflected by augmented mRNA expression of key molecules in gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis. Surprisingly, APS could simultaneously alleviate these alterations via peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1 alpha (PGC-1α)/Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1)/AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway. Moreover, APS treatment regulated the level of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), thereby alleviating transport stress-induced alterations of VLDL synthesis, cholesterol metabolism, lipid oxidation, synthesis, and transport-related molecules. These findings indicated that APS could prevent the potential against transport stress-induced hepatic glucolipid metabolism disorders via PGC-1α/SIRT1/AMPK/PPARα/PPARγ signaling system. In this paper, wavelet transform profilometry (WTP) method is studied to achieve a train wheel surface 3-D topography reconstruction and defects inspection. A structured light illumination is used to generate periodic fringes, and a CCD camera is used to capture the image of deformed fringes caused by a 3-D topography. The Complex Morlet wavelet is used to transform the deformed fringes image. By extracting the maximum value of wavelet transform ridge, distribution of wrapped phase caused by cliffy surface variation is obtained. A reliability algorithm is used for phase unwrapping. Simulation is done to manifest the feasibility of the method, and the maximal deviation of a 3-D reconstructed surface is 0.15 mm, so comparing with traditional 3-D reconstruction method, this method achieves a higher accuracy. Validation test on a train wheel shows that this method performs a precise 3-D reconstruction of large dimension object such as wheel surface, while small dimension object such as surface defects is also fine recognized simultaneously. Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) is a highly contagious virus that causes Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED). This enteric disease results in high mortality rates in piglets, leading to significant financial losses in the pig industry. However, vaccines cannot provide sufficient protection against epidemic strains. Spike (S) protein exposed on the surface of virion mediates PEDV entry into cells. Our findings imply that matrine (MT), a naturally occurring alkaloid, inhibits PEDV infection targeting S protein of virions and biological process of cells. The GLY434 residue in the autodocking site of the S protein and MT conserved based on sequence comparison. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of viral attachment, entry, and virucidal effects to investigate how that MT inhibits virus replication. MT inhibits PEDV attachment and entry by targeting S protein. MT was added to cells before, during, or after infection, it exhibits anti-PEDV activities and viricidal effects. Network pharmacology focuses on addressing causal mechanisms rather than just treating symptoms. We identified the key genes and screened the cell apoptosis involved in the inhibition of MT on PEDV infection in network pharmacology. MT significantly promotes cell apoptosis in PEDV-infected cells to inhibit PEDV infection by activating the MAPK signaling pathway. Atrazine (ATR) is widely used worldwide as a commercial herbicide, Diaminochlorotriazine (DACT) is the main metabolite of ATR in the organism. Both of them disrupt the production of steroids and induce abnormal reproductive development. The granulosa cells (GC s) are important for growth and reproduction of animals. However, the toxicity of ATR on the GCs of birds is not well clarified. To evaluate the effect of the environmental pollutant ATR on bird GCs. The quail GCs were allotted into 7 groups, C (The medium of M199), A20 (20 µM ATR), A100 (100 µM ATR), A250 (250 µM ATR), D20 (20 µM DACT), D100 (100 µM DACT) and D200 (200 µM DACT). The results demonstrated that ATR reduced the viability of GCs, disrupted mitochondrial structure (including mitochondrial cristae fragmentation and the mitochondrial morphology disappearance) and decreased mitochondrial membrane potential. Meanwhile, ATR interfered with the expression of key factors in the steroid synthesis pathway, inducing the secretion of the sex hormones E 2 and P in GCs. which in turn induced apoptosis. Furthermore, the Nrf2/ARE pathway as a potential target to ameliorate ATR-induced endocrine disruption in GCs for proper reproductive functions. Cadmium (Cd) is a well-known testis toxicant. The blood-testis barrier (BTB) is a crucial component of the testis. Cd can disrupt the integrity of the BTB and reproductive function. However, the mechanism of Cd-induced disruption of BTB and testicular damage has not been fully elucidated. Here, our study investigates the effects of Cd on BTB integrity and testicular dysfunction. 80 (aged 1 day) Hy-Line white variety chickens were randomly designed into 4 groups and treated for 90 days, as follows: control group (essential diet), 35 Cd, 70 Cd and 140 Cd groups (35, 70 and 140 mg/kg Cd). The results found that Cd exposure diminished volume of the testes and induced histopathological lesions in the testes. Exposure to Cd induced an inflammatory response, disrupted the structure and function of the FAK/occludin/ZO-1 protein complex and disrupted the tight junction and adherens junction in the BTB. In addition, Cd exposure reduced the expression of steroid-related proteins and inhibited testosterone synthesis. Taken together, these data elucidate that Cd disrupts the integrity of the BTB and further inhibits spermatogenesis by dissociating the FAK/occludin/ZO-1 complex, which provides a basis for further investigation into the mechanisms of Cd-induced impairment of male reproductive function and pharmacological protection. Transport stress (TS) not only weakens poultry performance but also affects animal welfare. Additionally, TS can evoke cardiac damage by triggering sterile inflammation in chicks, but the underlying mechanism is not fully understood. Here, we aimed to elucidate how TS induces sterile inflammation and heart injury and to clarify the antagonism effect of astragalus polysaccharides (APS). We randomly divided 60 chicks (one-day-old female) into 5 groups (n = 12): Control_0h (Con_0h) group (chicks were slaughtered at initiation), Control group (stress-free control), TS group (simulated TS exposure for 8 h), TS plus water (TS+W) group, and TS plus APS (TS+APS) group. Before simulation transport, the chicks of TS+W and TS+APS groups were, respectively, dietary with 100 μL of water or APS (250 μg/mL). H&E staining was employed for cardiac histopathological observation. ELISA assay was used to measure oxidative stress marker levels (GSH, GPX, GST, and MDA). A commercial kit was used to isolate the mitochondrial portion, and qRT-PCR was employed to measure the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) levels. Furthermore, we evaluated the activity of mtDNA-mediated NF-κB, NLRP3 inflammasome, and cGAS-STING inflammatory pathways and the expression of downstream inflammatory factors by Western Blotting or qRT-PCR. Our findings revealed that APS notably relieved TS-induced myocardial histopathological lesions and infiltrations. Likewise, the decrease in proinflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6) and IFN-β by APS further supported this result. Meanwhile, TS caused severe oxidative stress in the chick heart, as evidenced by decreased antioxidant enzymes and increased MDA. Importantly, APS prevented mtDNA stress and leakage by reducing oxidative stress. Interestingly, TS-induced mtDNA leakage caused a series of inflammation events via mtDNA-PRRs pathways, including TLR21-NF-κB, NLRP3 inflammasome, and cGAS-STING signaling. Encouragingly, all these adverse changes related to inflammation events induced by mtDNA-PRRs activation were all relieved by APS treatment. In summary, our findings provide the first evidence that inhibition of mtDNA-PRRs pathway-mediated sterile inflammation by APS could protect against TS-induced cardiac damage in chicks. Background: The quality of reporting in systematic reviews (SRs)/meta-analyses (MAs) of diagnostic tests published by authors in China has not been evaluated. The aims of present study are to evaluate the quality of reporting in diagnostic SRs/MAs using the PRISMA statement and determine the changes in the quality of reporting over time. Methods: According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we searched five databases including Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, and Web of knowledge, to identify SRs/MAs on diagnostic tests. The searches were conducted on July 14, 2012 and the cut off for inclusion of the SRs/MAs was December 31st 2011. The PRISMA statement was used to assess the quality of reporting. Analysis was performed using Excel 2003, RevMan 5. Results: A total of 312 studies were included. Fifteen diseases systems were covered. According to the PRISMA checklist, there had been serious reporting flaws in following items: structured summary (item 2, 22.4%), objectives (item 4, 18.9%), protocol and registration (item 5, 2.6%), risk of bias across studies (item 15, 26.3%), funding (item 27, 28.8%). The subgroup analysis showed that there had been some statistically significant improvement in total compliance for 9 PRISMA items after the PRISMA was released, 6 items were statistically improved regarding funded articles, 3 items were statistically improved for CSCD articles, and there was a statistically significant increase in the proportion of reviews reporting on 22 items for SCI articles (P<0.050). Conclusion: The numbers of diagnostic SRs/MAs is increasing annually. The quality of reporting has measurably been improved over the previous years. Unfortunately, there are still many deficiencies in the reporting including protocol and registration, search, risk of bias across studies, and funding. Abstract: A modified two-dimensional Eulerian air quality model was used to simulate both the gaseous and particulate pollutant concentrations during October 21-24, 2004 in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China. The most significant improvement to the model is the added capability to predict the secondary organic aerosols (SOA) concentrations because of the inclusion of the SOA formation chemistry. The meteorological input data were prepared using the CALMET meteorological model. The concentrations of aerosol-bound species such as NO3-, NH4+, SO42-, and SOA were calculated in the fine particle size range (<2.5 μm). The results of the two-dimensional model were compared to the measurements at the ground level during the PRD Intensive Monitoring Campaign. Overall, there were good agreements between the measured and modeled concentrations of inorganic aerosol components and O3. Both the measured and the modeled results indicated that the maximum hourly O3 concentrations exceeded the China National Air Quality Standard. Propofol, a common intravenous anesthetic, has been found to exert anti-cancer effects with inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, migration and invasion. We tested its possible action against HER2-overexpressing breast cancer cells that developed resistance against trastuzumab. Cell viability assay, ELISA for cytokines, mammosphere formation, quantitative RT-PCR for EMT/IL-6-targeting miRNAs and the in vivo experimental pulmonary metastasis model were performed to understand the epigenetic action of propofol. Propofol sensitized HER2 overexpressing cells to trastuzumab but such action was even more pronounced in resistant cells. Increased cytokines IL-6 as well as IL-8 were released by resistant cells, along with increased mammospheres and induction of EMT, all of which was inhibited by propofol. IL-6 targeting tumor suppressor miR-149-5p was found to be the novel miRNA that was up-regulated by propofol, resulting in the observed effects on cell viability, IL-6 production, mammospheres generation as well as EMT induction. Further, antagonizing miR-149-5p attenuated the propofol effects confirming the epigenetic activity of propofol through miR-149-5p regulation. Finally, in vivo validation in an experimental metastasis model conformed an inhibitory action of propofol against experimental lung metastasis and the essential mechanistic role of miR-149-5p/IL-6 loop. Exosomes contain cell-specific collections of bioactive materials including proteins, lipids, and RNAs that are transported to recipient cells to exert their impacts. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) can function as tumor suppressor or oncogenic genes and miR-21 is one of the most frequently up-regulated miRNAs in solid tumors including colon cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of miR-21, secreted from exosomes, in proliferation and invasion of colon cancer, along with the mechanistic details. We used a variety of biochemical techniques including ultracentrifugation-based exosome purification, electron transmission microscopy, western blot and RT-qPCR to detect the expression levels of miR-21 in exosomes purified from culture media of human colonic adenocarcinoma cell lines. We then performed functional and mechanistic studies using three colon cancer cell lines HT29, T84 and LS174 as well as the normal colon epithelial cells CRL1831. miR-21 target PDCD4 was investigated for its role in mediating miR-21 effects. Expression of miR-21 was significantly up-regulated in exosomes of colon cancer cells, compared to the normal human colon epithelial cells. Treatment of colon cancer cells with isolated exosomes or miR-21 led to an increased expression of genes involved in cell proliferation, invasion and extracellular matrix formation. miR-21 targets PDCD4, TPM1 and PTEN were down-regulated by exosomes and silencing of PDCD4 mimicked miR-21 functional effects, even the induced resistance against 5-FU. Cadmium (Cd) is a widespread environmental pollutant that accumulates in living systems and represents a significant global health hazard. Cd poses a toxicity threat to both human and animal health, including that of birds. Further knowledge of Cd toxicology pathways will allow for a better understanding of Cd-induced nephrotoxicity. To evaluate Cd-induced nephrotoxicity through potential oxidative damage, male chickens were treated with 0 mg/kg, 35 mg/kg or 70 mg/kg CdCl 2 in diet for 90 days. Markedly, histopathology indicated renal tubular epithelial cell swelling, renal function CREA content abnormalities, biochemical and morphologic indices indicative of Cd-induced kidney injury. Cd toxicity induced the up-regulation of Nrf2 and downstream target genes that relieve oxidative stress. Meanwhile, Cd disrupted the homeostasis of trace elements and promoted oxidative damage. Cd interfered with mitochondrial unfolded protein response (UPRmt)-related factors (SIRT1, SIRT3, PGC-1α, TFAM, Nrf1, and HTRA2) and disrupted the homeostasis of mitochondrial dynamics (OPA1, MFN1, MFN2, Fis1 and MFF), thereby exacerbating mitochondrial structural damage and mitochondrial dysfunction. In conclusion, our study demonstrated that the nephrotoxicity of Cd exposure results in oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction by activating the Nrf2 signaling pathway and inhibiting UPRmt in the kidneys. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is a widespread environmental toxicant that severely impacts agricultural production and animal and human health. Nevertheless, DEHP-induced hepatotoxicity at the molecular level in quail remains unexplored. The heat shock response (HSR), involving heat shock proteins (HSPs) and heat shock transcription factors (HSFs), is a highly conserved molecular response that is triggered by stressors, especially exposure to toxicants. To explore the DEHP-induced hepatotoxicity that occurs via regulation of HSR in birds, female quail were dosed with DEHP by oral gavage (0, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg) for 45 days. Based on histopathological analysis, the livers of the DEHP-treated groups exhibited structural alterations of hepatocytes, including mitochondrial swelling, derangement of hepatic plates, inflammatory cell infiltration and adipose degeneration. Ultrastructural evaluation of the livers of DEHP-treated quail revealed swollen mitochondria, partial disappearance of mitochondrial membranes and cristae, nuclear chromatin margination and nuclear condensation. The expression of HSF1 and HSF3 significantly decreased after DEHP exposure. The levels of HSPs (HSP10, HSP25, HSP27, HSP40, HSP47, HSP60, HSP70 and HSP90) were significantly downregulated in the livers of DEHP-treated quail. In this study, we concluded that DEHP exposure resulted in liver function damage and hepatotoxicity by reducing the expression of HSFs and HSPs in quail liver, which inhibited the protective effect of the HSR signaling pathway. DEHP can be absorbed by quail via a trophic chain that eventually results in hepatotoxicity. The results of this study indicated that mitochondria are target organelles of DEHP hepatotoxicity. DEHP can activate the HSR signaling pathway and suppress HSP system homeostasis to alleviate mitochondrial dysfunction. Abstract Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) in the environment and food chain may impact cerebrum development and neurobehavioral in humans and wildlife. However, it is unclear that DEHP exposure caused cerebral toxicity. This experiment used gavage to expose female quail to 0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg BW/day for 45 days to assess the potential neurotoxicity of DEHP to the cerebrum. It can be observed that there will be obvious neurological abnormalities in the experiment. Cerebrum histological lesions can be observed with HE-staining. Detecting oxidative stress indices, Nrf2 pathway, and mitochondrial dynamics factor, by analyzing the results, these results were observed that DEHP exposure can cause damage to the cerebrum by causing oxidative stress and affecting the balance of mitochondrial dynamics. Nrf2-mediated defense is not activated by exposure to 250 mg/kg DEHP. Nrf2-mediated defense is activated but is not resistant to exposure to medium and high doses of DEHP (500 mg/kg; 1000 mg/kg). A novel naphthalene based fluorescence probe NBDH was designed and synthesized. Probe NBDH exhibited highly selective and sensitive responses towards Al3+ in HEPES-NaOH buffer solution (pH = 7.4). In addition, the detection of NBDH to Al3+ could be achieved through dual channels embodied in significant fluorescent turn-on signal and ratiometric absorbance response. The stoichiometry ratio of NBDH-Al3+ was 1:1 by fluorescence job' plot and binging mechanism was further varified by the FT-IR, NMR titration and HRMS. Abstract A simple naphthalene derivative, 6-hydroxy-2-naphthohydrazide (NAH), was designed and synthesized through two facile steps reactions with the 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (NCA) as the starting material. In neat H 2 O (10% 0.01 M HEPES buffer, v/v, pH = 7.4), probe NAH showed a highly selective and sensitive response towards Fe3+ via perceptible color change and displayed "turn-on" dual-emission fluorescence response for Cu2+. The binding stoichiometry ratio of NAH /Cu2+ and NAH /Fe3+ were all confirmed as 1:1 by the method of fluorescence job's plot and UV–Vis job's plot, respectively. Probe NAH can be used over a wide pH range for the determination of Fe3+ (2.0–10.0) and Cu2+ (6.0–10.0) without interference from other co-existing metal ions. A possible detection mechanism was the hydrolysis of NAH upon the addition of Fe3+ or Cu2+, thereby leading to the formation of 6-hydroxy-naphthalene-2-carboxylic acid (NCA) which was further confirmed by the various spectroscopic techniques including FT-IR, 1H NMR titration and HRMS. Moreover, NAH was successfully applied to the detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+ in tap water, ultrapure water and BSA. Abstract Among ubiquitously found environmental contaminants in the ecosystem, di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) is an important environmental contaminant used as plasticizer in medical and consumer goods. The bioaccumulation and environmental persistence of DEHP cause serious global health effects in wildlife animals and human, especially hepatotoxicity. Herein, to explore the mechanisms of DEHP induced hepatotoxicity, quail were exposed with 0, 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg BW/day DEHP by gavage administration daily for 45 days. Notably, the adipose tissue degeneration was observed in the liver of DEHP-exposed quail under the histopathological analysis. DEHP exposure increased the peroxidation product (MDA), GSH and GST, but decreased antioxidant function (T-AOC, SOD and GPX). DEHP induced the oxidative stress and pulsed on NRF2 signal pathway through activating downstream genes. Furthermore, DEHP induced mitochondrial ultrastructural abnormalities and mitochondrial dysfunctions. Mitochondrial unfolded protein response (mtUPR) was activated to relieve mitochondrial dysfunctions and mitigated oxidative stress. These findings showed that mitochondrial functions and redox homeostasis were affected by DEHP and resulted in irreversible hepatic injury. In Conclusion, this study suggested that DEHP-induced hepatotoxicity in quail was associated with activating the NRF2 mediated antioxidant defense and mtUPR. These results provided new evidence on molecular mechanism of DEHP induced hepatotoxicity.
