1. Empirical color correction to MIST and PARSEC isochrones on Gaia BR-RP and G-RP with benchmark open clusters

Abstract: Recent literature reports a color deviation between observed Gaia color-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and theoretical model isochrone predictions, particularly in the very low-mass regime. To assess its impact on cluster age determination via isochrone fitting, we quantified the color deviations for three benchmark clusters, Hyades, Pleiades, and Praesepe, both for the Gaia color (BP-RP) and (G-RP). In general, the (G-RP) color deviations are smaller than the (BP-RP) ones. Empirical color correction functions based on these benchmarks are derived for the currently available MIST and PARSEC 1.2S isochrone models. Applying the correction functions to 31 additional open clusters and 3 moving groups results in a significantly improved alignment between the isochrones and observed CMDs. With our empirical corrections, isochrones provide age estimates consistent with literature values obtained through the spectral Lithium Depletion Boundary method, validating the effectiveness of our approach. The corresponding metallicities with PARSEC 1.2S also show a good agreement with the spectroscopic results. The empirical color correction function we present in this work offers a tool for a consistent age determination within the full mass range of stellar clusters using the isochrone fitting method., Comment: 27 pages. 2. Field tunable BKT and quantum phase transitions in spin-1/2 triangular lattice antiferromagnet

Abstract: Quantum magnetism is one of the most active fields for exploring exotic phases and phase transitions. The recently synthesized Na2BaCo(PO4)2 (NBCP) is an ideal material incarnation of the spin-1/2 easy axis triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF). Experimental evidence shows that NBCP hosts the spin supersolid state with a giant magnetocaloric effect. It was also proposed that the applied magnetic field B can drive the system through Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) and other richer quantum phase transitions. However, the detection of these transitions is challenging because they onset at extremely low temperature T at around 60 mK, and the measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of these transitions requires high sensitivity. With the help of our newly developed gradient force magnetometer in a dilution refrigerator, we constructed the contour diagram of the magnetic susceptibility in the B-T phase diagram in T as cold as 30 mK. These results provide a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of the several field-tunable quantum phase transitions and BKT melting of the spin supersolidity, which are especially significant when their giant magnetocaloric effects highlight potential applications for sub-Kelvin refrigeration under concerns about global helium shortages., Comment: 19 pages, 5 main figures, and 4 figures in the supplement

3. Beam Pointing of Relativistic High-order Harmonics Genrated on a Nonuniform Pre-plasma

Abstract: The use of tunable pre-pulse is a common technique to enhance the high-order harmonic generation from surface plasma. The shape and dynamic of the electron density, the degree of ionization and its rate, and the plasma heating are influenced by the pre-pulse properties. Non-uniform pre-pulse could cause a spatially varying density map to the pre-plasma region, which serves as the spectrally up-conversion and reflection surface. The corresponding geometrical feature and plasma nature under laser field will affect the harmonic emission properties. In this study, the variation in harmonic beam pointing due to the electron density shape was investigated. Particle-in-cell simulations demonstrated that both plasma hydrodynamics and geometrical optical effect induce the deviation of harmonic beam from specular reflection. This research contributes to the understanding of the surface plasma dynamics during high harmonic generation process.

4. CSGDN: Contrastive Signed Graph Diffusion Network for Predicting Crop Gene-phenotype Associations

Abstract: Positive and negative association prediction between gene and phenotype helps to illustrate the underlying mechanism of complex traits in organisms. The transcription and regulation activity of specific genes will be adjusted accordingly in different cell types, developmental stages, and physiological states. There are the following two problems in obtaining the positive/negative associations between gene and trait: 1) High-throughput DNA/RNA sequencing and phenotyping are expensive and time-consuming due to the need to process large sample sizes; 2) experiments introduce both random and systematic errors, and, meanwhile, calculations or predictions using software or models may produce noise. To address these two issues, we propose a Contrastive Signed Graph Diffusion Network, CSGDN, to learn robust node representations with fewer training samples to achieve higher link prediction accuracy. CSGDN employs a signed graph diffusion method to uncover the underlying regulatory associations between genes and phenotypes. Then, stochastic perturbation strategies are used to create two views for both original and diffusive graphs. Lastly, a multi-view contrastive learning paradigm loss is designed to unify the node presentations learned from the two views to resist interference and reduce noise. We conduct experiments to validate the performance of CSGDN on three crop datasets: Gossypium hirsutum, Brassica napus, and Triticum turgidum. 5. Verbalized Graph Representation Learning: A Fully Interpretable Graph Model Based on Large Language Models Throughout the Entire Process

Abstract: Representation learning on text-attributed graphs (TAGs) has attracted significant interest due to its wide-ranging real-world applications, particularly through Graph Neural Networks (GNNs). Traditional GNN methods focus on encoding the structural information of graphs, often using shallow text embeddings for node or edge attributes. This limits the model to understand the rich semantic information in the data and its reasoning ability for complex downstream tasks, while also lacking interpretability. With the rise of large language models (LLMs), an increasing number of studies are combining them with GNNs for graph representation learning and downstream tasks. While these approaches effectively leverage the rich semantic information in TAGs datasets, their main drawback is that they are only partially interpretable, which limits their application in critical fields. In this paper, we propose a verbalized graph representation learning (VGRL) method which is fully interpretable. In contrast to traditional graph machine learning models, which are usually optimized within a continuous parameter space, VGRL constrains this parameter space to be text description which ensures complete interpretability throughout the entire process, making it easier for users to understand and trust the decisions of the model. 6. DropEdge not Foolproof: Effective Augmentation Method for Signed Graph Neural Networks

Abstract: The paper discusses signed graphs, which model friendly or antagonistic relationships using edges marked with positive or negative signs, focusing on the task of link sign prediction. While Signed Graph Neural Networks (SGNNs) have advanced, they face challenges like graph sparsity and unbalanced triangles. The authors propose using data augmentation (DA) techniques to address these issues, although many existing methods are not suitable for signed graphs due to a lack of side information. They highlight that the random DropEdge method, a rare DA approach applicable to signed graphs, does not enhance link sign prediction performance. In response, they introduce the Signed Graph Augmentation (SGA) framework, which includes a structure augmentation module to identify candidate edges and a strategy for selecting beneficial candidates, ultimately improving SGNN training. 7. Evidence for field induced quantum spin liquid behavior in a spin-1/2 honeycomb magnet

Abstract: One of the most important issues in modern condensed matter physics is the realization of fractionalized excitations, such as the Majorana excitations in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid. To this aim, the 3d-based Kitaev material Na2Co2TeO6 is a promising candidate whose magnetic phase diagram of B // a* contains a field-induced intermediate magnetically disordered phase within 7.5 T < |B| < 10 T. The experimental observations, including the restoration of the crystalline point group symmetry in the angle-dependent torque and the coexisting magnon excitations and spinon-continuum in the inelastic neutron scattering spectrum, provide strong evidence that this disordered phase is a field induced quantum spin liquid with partially polarized spins. Our variational Monte Carlo simulation with the effective K-J1-{\Gamma}-{\Gamma}'-J3 model reproduces the experimental data and further supports this conclusion.

Abstract: Metals with kagome lattice provide bulk materials to host both the flat-band and Dirac electronic dispersions. A new family of kagome metals is recently discovered in AV6Sn6. The Dirac electronic structures of this material need more experimental evidence to confirm. In the manuscript, we investigate this problem by resolving the quantum oscillations in both electrical transport and magnetization in ScV6Sn6. The revealed orbits are consistent with the electronic band structure models. Furthermore, the Berry phase of a dominating orbit is revealed to be around $\pi$, providing direct evidence for the topological band structure, which is consistent with calculations. 9. Large Oscillatory Thermal Hall Effect in Kagome Metals

Abstract: The thermal Hall effect recently provided intriguing probes to the ground state of exotic quantum matters. These observations of transverse thermal Hall signals lead to the debate on the fermionic versus bosonic origins of these phenomena. The recent report of quantum oscillations (QOs) in Kitaev spin liquid points to a possible resolution. The Landau level quantization would most likely capture only the fermionic thermal transport effect. However, the QOs in the thermal Hall effect are generally hard to detect. In this work, we report the observation of a large oscillatory thermal Hall effect of correlated Kagome metals. We detect a 180-degree phase change of the oscillation and demonstrate the phase flip as an essential feature for QOs in the thermal transport properties. More importantly, the QOs in the thermal Hall channel are more profound than those in the electrical Hall channel, which strongly violates the Wiedemann Franz (WF) law for QOs. 10. Thermodynamic evidence of fermionic behavior in the vicinity of one-ninth plateau in a kagome antiferromagnet

Abstract: The spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnets are believed to host exotic quantum entangled states. Recently, the report of 1/9 magnetization plateau and magnetic oscillations in a kagome antiferromagnet YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Br$_2$[Br$_x$(OH)$_{1-x}$] (YCOB) have made this material a promising candidate for experimentally realizing quantum spin liquid states. Here we present measurements of the specific heat $C_p$ in YCOB in high magnetic fields (up to 41.5 Tesla) down to 0.46 Kelvin, and the 1/9 plateau feature has been confirmed. Moreover, the temperature dependence of $C_p/T$ in the vicinity of 1/9 plateau region can be fitted by a linear in $T$ term which indicates the presence of a Dirac spectrum, together with a constant term, which indicates a finite density of states (DOS) contributed by other Fermi surfaces. Surprisingly the constant term is highly anisotropic in the direction of the magnetic field. 11. Efficacy and safety of olezarsen in lowering apolipoprotein C-III and triglycerides in healthy Japanese Americans.

Abstract: BACKGROUND: Olezarsen is a GalNAc3-conjugated, hepatic-targeted antisense oligonucleotide that lowers apolipoprotein C-III (apoC-III) and triglyceride levels. The efficacy and safety of olezarsen has not previously been studied in ethnically diverse American populations. The aim of this study is to assess the effect of olezarsen in healthy Japanese Americans. METHODS: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind phase 1 study was performed in 28 healthy Japanese American participants treated with olezarsen in single-ascending doses (SAD; 30, 60, 90 mg) or multiple doses (MD; 60 mg every 4 weeks for 4 doses). The primary, secondary, and exploratory objectives were safety and tolerability, pharmacokinetics, and effects of olezarsen on fasting serum triglycerides and apoC-III, respectively. RESULTS: There were 20 participants (16 active:4 placebo) in the SAD part of the study, and 8 participants (6 active:2 placebo) in the MD part of the study. For the primary endpoint, no serious adverse events or clinically relevant laboratory abnormalities were reported. The majority of olezarsen plasma exposure occurred within 24 h post-dose. In the SAD cohorts at Day 15 the percentage reduction in apoC-III/TG was - 39.4%/ - 17.8%, - 60.8%/ - 52.7%, and - 68.1%/ - 39.2% in the 30, 60 and 90 mg doses, respectively, vs 2.3%/44.5% increases in placebo. In the MD cohort, at Day 92 the percentage reduction in apoC-III/TG was - 81.6/ - 73.8% vs - 17.2/ - 40.8% reduction in placebo. Favorable changes were also present in VLDL-C, apoB and HDL-C. CONCLUSIONS: Single- and multiple-dose administration of olezarsen was safe, was well tolerated, and significantly reduced apoC-III and triglyceride levels in healthy Japanese Americans.

12. SE-SGformer: A Self-Explainable Signed Graph Transformer for Link Sign Prediction

Abstract: Signed Graph Neural Networks (SGNNs) have been shown to be effective in analyzing complex patterns in real-world situations where positive and negative links coexist. However, SGNN models suffer from poor explainability, which limit their adoptions in critical scenarios that require understanding the rationale behind predictions. To the best of our knowledge, there is currently no research work on the explainability of the SGNN models. Our goal is to address the explainability of decision-making for the downstream task of link sign prediction specific to signed graph neural networks. Since post-hoc explanations are not derived directly from the models, they may be biased and misrepresent the true explanations. Therefore, in this paper we introduce a Self-Explainable Signed Graph transformer (SE-SGformer) framework, which can not only outputs explainable information while ensuring high prediction accuracy. Specifically, We propose a new Transformer architecture for signed graphs and theoretically demonstrate that using positional encoding based on signed random walks has greater expressive power than current SGNN methods and other positional encoding graph Transformer-based approaches. We constructs a novel explainable decision process by discovering the $K$-nearest (farthest) positive (negative) neighbors of a node to replace the neural network-based decoder for predicting edge signs. These $K$ positive (negative) neighbors represent crucial information about the formation of positive (negative) edges between nodes and thus can serve as important explanatory information in the decision-making process. We conducted experiments on several real-world datasets to validate the effectiveness of SE-SGformer, which outperforms the state-of-the-art methods by improving 2.2\% prediction accuracy and 73.1\% explainablity accuracy in the best-case scenario.

13. High-order Structure-preserving Methods for Damped Hamiltonian System

Abstract: We present a novel methodology for constructing arbitrarily high-order structure-preserving methods tailored for damped Hamiltonian systems. This method combines the idea of exponential integrator and energy-preserving collocation methods, effectively preserving the energy dissipation ratio introduced by the damping terms. We demonstrate the conservative properties of these methods and confirm their order of accuracy through numerical experiments involving the damped Burger's equation and Korteweg-de-Vries equation.

14. PRIME-DP: Pre-trained Integrated Model for Earthquake Data Processing

Abstract: We propose a novel seismic wave representation model, namely PRIME-DP (Pre-trained Integrated Model for Earthquake Data Processing), specifically designed for processing seismic waveforms. Most existing models are designed to solve a singular problem. Unlike these models, PRIME-DP is capable of multi-task single station seismic waveform processing, including Pg/Sg/Pn/Sn phase picking and P polarization classification. Moreover, it can be fine-tunned to various tasks, such as event classification without architecture modifications. PRIME-DP can achieve a recall rate of over 85% for Pg and Sg phases on continuous waveforms and achieves over 80% accuracy in P polarization classification. By fine-tuning classification decoder with NeiMeng dataset, PRIME-DP achieves 95.1% accuracy on event.

15. Semantic-CC: Boosting Remote Sensing Image Change Captioning via Foundational Knowledge and Semantic Guidance

Abstract: Remote sensing image change captioning (RSICC) aims to articulate the changes in objects of interest within bi-temporal remote sensing images using natural language. Given the limitations of current RSICC methods in expressing general features across multi-temporal and spatial scenarios, and their deficiency in providing granular, robust, and precise change descriptions, we introduce a novel change captioning (CC) method based on the foundational knowledge and semantic guidance, which we term Semantic-CC. Semantic-CC alleviates the dependency of high-generalization algorithms on extensive annotations by harnessing the latent knowledge of foundation models, and it generates more comprehensive and accurate change descriptions guided by pixel-level semantics from change detection (CD). Specifically, we propose a bi-temporal SAM-based encoder for dual-image feature extraction; a multi-task semantic aggregation neck for facilitating information interaction between heterogeneous tasks; a straightforward multi-scale change detection decoder to provide pixel-level semantic guidance; and a change caption decoder based on the large language model (LLM) to generate change description sentences. Moreover, to ensure the stability of the joint training of CD and CC, we propose a three-stage training strategy that supervises different tasks at various stages. We validate the proposed method on the LEVIR-CC and LEVIR-CD datasets. The experimental results corroborate the complementarity of CD and CC, demonstrating that Semantic-CC can generate more accurate change descriptions and achieve optimal performance across both tasks.

Abstract: In recent years, artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly accelerated its influence and is expected to promote the development of Earth system science (ESS) if properly harnessed. In application of AI to ESS, a significant hurdle lies in the interpretability conundrum, an inherent problem of black-box nature arising from the complexity of AI algorithms. To address this, explainable AI (XAI) offers a set of powerful tools that make the models more transparent. The purpose of this review is twofold: First, to provide ESS scholars, especially newcomers, with a foundational understanding of XAI, serving as a primer to inspire future research advances; second, to encourage ESS professionals to embrace the benefits of AI, free from preconceived biases due to its lack of interpretability. We begin with elucidating the concept of XAI, along with typical methods. We then delve into a review of XAI applications in the ESS literature, highlighting the important role that XAI has played in facilitating communication with AI model decisions, improving model diagnosis, and uncovering scientific insights. We identify four significant challenges that XAI faces within the ESS, and propose solutions. Furthermore, we provide a comprehensive illustration of multifaceted perspectives. Given the unique challenges in ESS, an interpretable hybrid approach that seamlessly integrates AI with domain-specific knowledge appears to be a promising way to enhance the utility of AI in ESS. A visionary outlook for ESS envisions a harmonious blend where process-based models govern the known, AI models explore the unknown, and XAI bridges the gap by providing explanations.

Based on Gaia DR3 data, we apply the hierarchical clustering algorithm to a young open cluster NGC 6530 and group its members into 5 substructures. By linear tracing with the kinematic information of their members, we find that: Sub 1 is the core of the cluster. It is expanding slowly. Sub 2 consists of less bound members, which began escaping from the core about 0.78 Myr ago. Sub 3 is associated with a young star forming region. It will merge with the core after 0.72 Myr; Sub 4, as an outskirt group, is also moving towards the core, but won't end up falling in. While Sub 5 is composed of less-bound members with field contamination. This work reveals the complex internal structure and evolutionary trends of the cluster NGC 6530. 19. MAP: Low-compute Model Merging with Amortized Pareto Fronts via Quadratic Approximation

Abstract: Model merging has emerged as an effective approach to combine multiple single-task models into a multitask model. This process typically involves computing a weighted average of the model parameters without any additional training. Existing model-merging methods focus on enhancing average task accuracy. However, interference and conflicts between the objectives of different tasks can lead to trade-offs during the merging process. In real-world applications, a set of solutions with various trade-offs can be more informative, helping practitioners make decisions based on diverse preferences. In this paper, we introduce a novel and low-compute algorithm, Model Merging with Amortized Pareto Front (MAP). MAP efficiently identifies a Pareto set of scaling coefficients for merging multiple models, reflecting the trade-offs involved. It amortizes the substantial computational cost of evaluations needed to estimate the Pareto front by using quadratic approximation surrogate models derived from a pre-selected set of scaling coefficients. Experimental results on vision and natural language processing tasks demonstrate that MAP can accurately identify the Pareto front, providing practitioners with flexible solutions to balance competing task objectives. We also introduce Bayesian MAP for scenarios with a relatively low number of tasks and Nested MAP for situations with a high number of tasks, further reducing the computational cost of evaluation.

20. VCR: Visual Caption Restoration

Abstract: We introduce Visual Caption Restoration (VCR), a novel vision-language task that challenges models to accurately restore partially obscured texts using pixel-level hints within images. This task stems from the observation that text embedded in images is intrinsically different from common visual elements and natural language due to the need to align the modalities of vision, text, and text embedded in images. While numerous works have integrated text embedded in images into visual question-answering tasks, approaches to these tasks generally rely on optical character recognition or masked language modeling, thus reducing the task to mainly text-based processing. However, text-based processing becomes ineffective in VCR as accurate text restoration depends on the combined information from provided images, context, and subtle cues from the tiny exposed areas of masked texts. We develop a pipeline to generate synthetic images for the VCR task using image-caption pairs, with adjustable caption visibility to control the task difficulty. With this pipeline, we construct a dataset for VCR called VCR-Wiki using images with captions from Wikipedia, comprising 2.11M English and 346K Chinese entities in both easy and hard split variants. Our results reveal that current vision language models significantly lag behind human performance in the VCR task, and merely fine-tuning the models on our dataset does not lead to notable improvements. 21. MarsSeg: Mars Surface Semantic Segmentation with Multi-level Extractor and Connector

Abstract: The segmentation and interpretation of the Martian surface play a pivotal role in Mars exploration, providing essential data for the trajectory planning and obstacle avoidance of rovers. However, the complex topography, similar surface features, and the lack of extensive annotated data pose significant challenges to the high-precision semantic segmentation of the Martian surface. To address these challenges, we propose a novel encoder-decoder based Mars segmentation network, termed MarsSeg. Specifically, we employ an encoder-decoder structure with a minimized number of down-sampling layers to preserve local details. To facilitate a high-level semantic understanding across the shadow multi-level feature maps, we introduce a feature enhancement connection layer situated between the encoder and decoder. This layer incorporates Mini Atrous Spatial Pyramid Pooling (Mini-ASPP), Polarized Self-Attention (PSA), and Strip Pyramid Pooling Module (SPPM). The Mini-ASPP and PSA are specifically designed for shadow feature enhancement, thereby enabling the expression of local details and small objects. Conversely, the SPPM is employed for deep feature enhancement, facilitating the extraction of high-level semantic category-related information. Experimental results derived from the Mars-Seg and AI4Mars datasets substantiate that the proposed MarsSeg outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in segmentation performance, validating the efficacy of each proposed component.

Abstract: In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

Abstract: We investigate vortex states in Bose-Einstein condensates under the combined action of the spin-orbit coupling (SOC), gradient magnetic field, and harmonic-oscillator trapping potential. The linear version of the system is solved exactly. Through the linear-spectrum analysis, we find that, varying the SOC strength and magnetic-field gradient, one can perform energy-level inversion. With suitable parameters, initial higher-order vortex states can be made the ground state (GS). The nonlinear system is solved numerically, revealing that the results are consistent with the linear predictions in the case of repulsive inter-component interactions. On the other hand, inter-component attraction creates the GS in the form of mixed-mode states in a vicinity of the GS phase-transition points. Abstract: We explored decision-making dynamics in social systems, referencing the 'herd behavior' from prior studies where individuals follow preceding choices without understanding the underlying reasons. While previous research highlighted a preference for the optimal choice without external influences, our study introduced principals or external guides, adding complexity to the decision-making process. The reliability of these principals significantly influenced decisions. Notably, even occasional trust in an unreliable principal could alter decision outcomes. Furthermore, when a principal's advice was purely random, heightened trust led to more decision errors. Our findings emphasize the need for caution when placing trust in decision-making contexts.

Abstract: This paper presents an Exploratory 3D Dance generation framework, E3D2, designed to address the exploration capability deficiency in existing music-conditioned 3D dance generation models. Current models often generate monotonous and simplistic dance sequences that misalign with human preferences because they lack exploration capabilities. The E3D2 framework involves a reward model trained from automatically-ranked dance demonstrations, which then guides the reinforcement learning process. This approach encourages the agent to explore and generate high quality and diverse dance movement sequences. The soundness of the reward model is both theoretically and experimentally validated. Abstract: This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.
