1. Preparation of Natural Wax-Based Oleogels and Their Effect on the Fluctuating Temperature Storage of Chocolate

Abstract

In this study, in order to investigate the effect of gelation on the hardness, oil-holding capacity and rheological properties of oils and fats, oleogels were prepared by mixing coconut oil and/or palm kernel oil as oil base with candelilla wax. The results showed that candelilla wax enhanced the hardness and oil-holding capacity of oils and fats, and it could overall increase the apparent viscosity and modulus, indicating strong gelation. Furthermore, in order to clarify the effects of wax-based oleogels on chocolate quality, chocolate was made with the oleogels as oil base and stored at fluctuating temperatures of 25/32 ℃. The fatty acid and triglyceride composition, color, crystal form and micromorphology of chocolate were analyzed. It was found that gelation resulted in the generation of a new β’ crystal form, and the formation of feather-shaped and spherical crystals inside the crystal; the oil was encapsulated in the dense crystalline network, preventing its migration, retarding the blooming of chocolate and making the chocolate system more stable. In conclusion, this study provides a theoretical basis for the construction of wax-based oleogels and a reference for the development and application of fat substitutes for chocolate.

27. Efficient photoelectrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CH3OH via porous g-C3N4 nanosheets modified with cobalt phthalocyanine in ionic liquids.

Abstract

Photocatalytic CO2 reduction into fuels is desirable; however, realizing efficient CnH2n+1OH (n = 1, 2) synthesis that involves electron-coupled proton transfer alongside C–C bond formation remains a challenge. Here, we demonstrated a photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) CO2 reduction strategy to generate CH3OH and CH3CH2OH on cobalt phthalocyanine/g-C3N4 (CoPc/CN) in ionic liquids (ILs). In situ infrared spectroscopy indicated that *HCOO was a key intermediate for the evolution of CH3OH, and density functional theory (DFT) revealed that the Gibbs energy of C–C coupling dropped significantly from 4.94 to 2.21 eV in the ILs electrolyte. The carrier separation efficiency was enhanced in [BMMIm]Br electrolyte, in which photocurrent was 9-fold higher than that in KHCO3. This strategy achieved record-high CH3OH and CH3CH2OH generation abilities (6465.9 and 218.6 μM cm−2 h−1), which were 60.7- and 17.8-fold higher than those in KHCO3, respectively. Therefore, this work develops a PEC strategy to obtain excellent CH3OH yield, and provides new insight into the C–C coupling mechanism in IL-assisted CO2 reduction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. Ultralong-lived triplet excitons of room-temperature phosphorescent carbon dots located on g-C3N4to boost photocatalysis

Abstract

Semiconductor photocatalysts have recently received growing attention, but still meet the challenges of a weak separation ability of photogenerated electrons and holes, which leads to energy loss. In this work, we utilize ultralong-lived triplet excitons to promote the separation of electron-hole pairs and to realize the efficient transformation from excitons to carriers. Room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) carbon dots (CDs) were selected as a model system, which were highly dispersed onto g-C3N4and exhibited largely enhanced photocatalytic and electrochemical activities compared with those of typical fluorescent CD systems. Both experimental and density functional theory calculations show that the ultralong-lived triplet excitons from RTP CD@g-C3N4serve as an “energy sustained-release capsule” and thus effectively regulate the recombination of excitons and boost the intrinsic photocatalytic performances (including water splitting and dye degradation). Therefore, this work provides a new design strategy to use ultralong-lived triplet excitons as high-efficiency photocatalysts.

Abstract

The naturally occurring linear dipeptide JBP923 (trans-4-l-Hyp-l-Ser, HS-tLL) with anti-inflammatory effects showed potential for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). However, colon-specific delivery after oral administration is still a challenge because its absorption is mediated by oligopeptide transporter 1 (PEPT1) in the upper small intestine and because of its instability in the gastrointestinal tract. Therefore, we aimed to enhance the colon-targeting efficiency by modulating HS-tLL chirality to synthesize eight enantiomers. Among these enantiomers, trans-4-d-Hyp-d-Ser, cis-4-l-Hyp-d-Ser, cis-4-d-Hyp-l-Ser, and cis-4-d-Hyp-d-Ser did not work as substrates of PEPT1 and were stable in the gastrointestinal tract, resulting in enhanced colonic accumulation through the paracellular pathway due to the loose tight junctions in IBD. Interestingly, cis-4-d-Hyp-d-Ser exerted the most potent therapeutic effect on IBD. Our findings revealed the impact of chirality on the colonic accumulation of the linear dipeptide, providing strategies for the colon-targeted delivery of the linear dipeptide for the treatment of IBD.
