Abstract

One quarter of the world's population uses karst groundwater. Due to the complex hydrological conditions in karst areas, they are vulnerable to pollution. The study of the hydrochemical characteristics and environmental quality evaluations of karst groundwater is of great significance for the rational development and utilization of karst groundwater. The study area is located in the Mengzi area of Yunnan Province, which is a typical karst area. The groundwater in the study area was analyzed and evaluated by a statistical analysis, hydrogeochemical analysis, ion ratio and Nemerow's index method (PN). The results show that the hydrochemical types are mainly the Ca–HCO3 and Ca–Mg–HCO3 types. The main hydrochemical compositions of groundwater were controlled by carbonate dissolution. The results of the water quality evaluation show that the main pollutants in the study area are Mn, COD and NO3−. Compared with groundwater, the concentration and exceeding rate of pollutants in surface water are much higher than those in groundwater. There is the possibility of groundwater pollution by surface water infiltration. The results reveal the characteristics of groundwater pollution in typical karst areas and provide a theoretical basis for the rational development and utilization of groundwater. Abstract

Farmlands and rivers have been seriously polluted by cyanide from a goldmine tailings dam that collapsed in early spring of 1995 in Yining County, Xinjiang Autonomous Region of China. The cyanide distribution in the polluted farmland and the abandoned tailings dam was studied, three and 4 years after the accident occurred. The results indicated that natural degradation of cyanide in soils is slower than in natural water bodies. The cyanide transport in the soil section is similar to freely soluble salts. In arid and semiarid areas, cyanide can be highly enriched in the salt crust in which the concentration is even higher than the fresh tailings debris though cyanide has decomposed for 4 years. In the polluted farmland, the sticky layer in the soil section can highly adsorb and enrich cyanide so it can partly prevent cyanide transfer to groundwater. According to the characteristics of cyanide natural degradation in soil, the measures for prevention and cure of soil polluted by goldmine tailing dam collapse have been discussed.

Abstract

The Ili River is a very important river to the northwest of China and Kazakhstan. The Axi Goldmine is located in the upstream of a branch of the Ili River. The cyanide from the goldmine effluent is a threat to the downstream areas. According to our study, the natural degradation of cyanide conforms to a negative exponential equation in the tailings impoundment, second wastewater pond and even in the receiving streams if the dilution action from other streams were deducted. In the combined action of dilution and natural decomposing, the cyanide from the goldmine effluent does not pose a hazard to the trunk of the Ili River in the normal producing states. The equations of cyanide degradation in the streams and the hydrology parameters could be used to assess the environmental impact on the downstream areas if accidental discharges of cyanide occurred. The available way of decreasing the cyanide impact on the streams is to increase the rate of recycled water so that the lower the wastewater level in the tailing impoundment and the second wastewater pond, the lower is the amount of leakage of wastewater to the streams.

Abstract

Abstract: Based on aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)–(NH4)2SO4, a simple pretreatment approach was developed for the extraction and determination of papaverin in pericarpium papaveris. The influence factors on phase behavior of the ATPS and partition behavior of papaverin was investigated, and partition mechanism based on the hydrophobic interaction between PEG and analyte molecules was proposed. Under the optimal conditions, the extraction efficiencies for papaverin were 93–96%, and the recoveries of the added standard were 97–106% with relative standard deviations of 1.8–2.5%. Combined with a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method, this extraction technique has been successfully applied to the determination of papaverin in pericarpium papaveris with the detection limit of 2ngmL−1 and the linear range of 0.10–10μgmL−1. Compared with the conventional liquid–liquid extraction or solid-phase extraction, this method was more environmentally benign, more cost effective and much simpler due to the direct injection of the upper phase into HPLC system.
