Abstract

Deciphering the genetic basis of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels may improve their utility for prostate cancer (PCa) screening. Using genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary statistics from 95,768 PCa-free men, we conducted a transcriptome-wide association study (TWAS) to examine impacts of genetically predicted gene expression on PSA. Analyses identified 41 statistically significant (p 0.5: CCNA2 and HIST1H2BN. Six of the 20 identified genes are not known to impact PCa risk. Fine-mapping based on whole blood and prostate tissue revealed five protein-coding genes with evidence of causal relationships with PSA levels. Of these five genes, four exhibited evidence of colocalization and one was conditionally independent of previous GWAS findings. These results yield hypotheses that should be further explored to improve understanding of genetic factors underlying PSA levels.

Abstract

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) provides a unique probe for neutrino properties Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. REactor neutrino LIquid xenon Coherent Scattering experiment (RELICS), a proposed reactor neutrino program using liquid xenon time projection chamber (LXeTPC) technology, aims to investigate the CEvNS process of antineutrinos off xenon atomic nuclei. In this work, the design of the experiment is studied and optimized based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. To achieve a sufficiently low energy threshold for CEvNS detection, an ionization-only analysis channel is adopted for RELICS. A high emission rate of delayed electrons after a big ionization signal is the major background, leading to an analysis threshold of 120 photo-electrons in the CEvNS search. The second largest background, nuclear recoils induced by cosmic-ray neutrons, is suppressed via a passive water shield. The physics potential of RELICS is explored with a 32 kg*yr exposure at a baseline of 25 m from a reactor core with a 3 GW thermal power. In an energy range of 120 to 300 PE, corresponding to an average nuclear recoil from 0.63 to 1.36 keV considering the liquid xenon response and detector-related effect, we expect 4639.7 CEvNS and 1687.8 background events. The sensitivity of RELICS to the weak mixing angle is investigated at a low momentum transfer. Our study shows that RELICS can further improve the constraints on the non-standard neutrino interaction (NSI) compared to the current best results.

According to mainstream electrodynamics, a steady loop current does not radiate. Edward, Kenyon, and Lemon took the approximated electric field formula (the magnetic one is trivial) for a moving point charge and showed that the electric field of a steady loop current could be partitioned into a static field falling with the square of distance and an integral of an exact differential (also called total differential, full differential, or perfect differential), thus no radiation was omitted. Abstract

Low-background liquid xenon detectors are utilized in the investigation of rare events, including dark matter and neutrinoless double beta decay. For their calibration, gaseous $^{220}$Rn can be used. After being introduced into the xenon, its progeny isotope $^{212}$Pb induces homogeneously distributed, low-energy ($<30$ keV) electronic recoil interactions. We report on the characterization of such a source for use in the XENONnT experiment. It consists of four commercially available $^{228}$Th sources with an activity of 55 kBq. These sources provide a high $^{220}$Rn emanation rate of about 8 kBq. We find no indication for the release of the long-lived $^{228}$Th above 1.7 mBq. Though an unexpected $^{222}$Rn emanation rate of about 3.6 mBq is observed, this source is still in line with the requirements for the XENONnT experiment., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

This report summarizes the findings of the CF1 Topical Subgroup to Snowmass 2021, which was focused on particle dark matter. One of the most important scientific goals of the next decade is to reveal the nature of dark matter (DM). To accomplish this goal, we must delve deep, to cover high priority targets including weakly-interacting massive particles (WIMPs), and search wide, to explore as much motivated DM parameter space as possible. A diverse, continuous portfolio of experiments at large, medium, and small scales that includes both direct and indirect detection techniques maximizes the probability of discovering particle DM. Detailed calibrations and modeling of signal and background processes are required to make a convincing discovery. In the event that a candidate particle is found through different means, for example at a particle collider, the program described in this report is also essential to show that it is consistent with the actual cosmological DM. Abstract

We outline the unique opportunities and challenges in the search for “ultraheavy” dark matter candidates with masses between roughly 10 TeV and the Planck scale mpl ≈ 1016 TeV. This mass range presents a wide and relatively unexplored dark matter parameter space, with a rich space of possible models and cosmic histories. We emphasize that both current detectors and new, targeted search techniques, via both direct and indirect detection, are poised to contribute to searches for ultraheavy particle dark matter in the coming decade. We highlight the need for new developments in this space, including new analyses of current and imminent direct and indirect experiments targeting ultraheavy dark matter and development of new, ultra-sensitive detector technologies like next-generation liquid noble detectors, neutrino experiments, and specialized quantum sensing techniques.

Abstract

The absence of clear signals from particle dark matter in direct detection experiments motivates new approaches in disparate regions of viable parameter space. In this Snowmass white paper, we outline the Windchime project, a program to build a large array of quantum-enhanced mechanical sensors. The ultimate aim is to build a detector capable of searching for Planck mass-scale dark matter purely through its gravitational coupling to ordinary matter. In the shorter term, we aim to search for a number of other physics targets, especially some ultralight dark matter candidates. Here, we discuss the basic design, open R&D challenges and opportunities, current experimental efforts, and both short- and long-term physics targets of the Windchime project., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

Background and purpose: Pancreatic cancer is a highly malignant disease. Most patients are in advanced stage upon diagnosis. Systemic chemotherapy is an important treatment method, but the chemotherapy drug resistance to tumors brings many problems to clinical treatment. As a commonly used chemotherapy drug, paclitaxel can induce apoptosis in tumor cells. The FBW7 gene is a tumor suppressor gene, and the loss of its function can lead to tumor occurrence and progression. Research has shown that it has the effect of promoting tumor cell apoptosis and inhibiting tumor proliferation. In addition, this gene has been proven to promote apoptosis and ferroptosis, which increase the effect of chemotherapy drugs. Pyroptosis is a programmed cell death mode mediated by gasdermin (GSDM) protein, and this cell death is often accompanied by inflammatory reactions. This study aimed to investigate whether FBW7 gene can promote the anti-tumor effect of paclitaxel by increasing pyroptosis. Methods: A PANC-1 cell line overexpressing FBW7 was constructed using lentivirus transfection. The correlation between FBW7 and GSDME gene expressions was detected by immunohistochemistry in clinical samples, and the expression levels of mRNA and protein were detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RTFQ-PCR) and Western blot. We observed the morphological changes of cells treated with paclitaxel under light microscopy. Cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8) was used to detect the effect of paclitaxel on cell viability, and flow cytometry and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release assay were performed to detect the effect of paclitaxel on cell death. Western blot was used to detect caspase-3 and GSDME activation after paclitaxel treatment. Results: RTFQ-PCR and Western blot experiments showed that overexpression of FBW7 gene increased the expression of GSDME. Immunohistochemical staining of pathological sections of clinical patients also showed that the expressions of FBW7 and GSDME genes was positively correlated in vivo. Flow cytometry and LDH release experiments showed that the level of cell death in pancreatic cancer cell line PANC-1 overexpressing FBW7 was significantly increased compared with its empty vector (EV) cells after being treated with paclitaxel. Under light microscopy, it was observed that the number of cells with pyroptosis was significantly higher in PANC-1 cell lines overexpressing FBW7 than in EV cells. The CCK-8 experiment results showed that the cell viability was significantly lower in FBW7 overexpressed cell lines than in EV cells after paclitaxel treatment. Western blot experiment results showed that after pancreatic cancer cell line PANC-1 was treated with paclitaxel, the protein expressions of active-caspase-3 and GSDME-NT in FBW7 overexpression cell lines increased, which proved that they had more obvious activation, indicating that the FBW7 gene can increase the sensitivity of PANC-1 cells to paclitaxel through caspase-3/GSDME signaling pathway induced cell pyroptosis. Conclusion: FBW7 can increase the sensitivity of pancreatic cancer cells to paclitaxel by increasing the expression of GSDME, which is realized through caspase-3/GSDME pathway.

Abstract

We characterize single- and few-electron backgrounds that are observed in dual-phase liquid xenon time projection chambers at timescales greatly exceeding a maximum drift time after an interaction. These instrumental backgrounds limit a detector's sensitivity to dark matter and cosmogenic neutrinos. Using the ~150g liquid xenon detector at Purdue University, we investigate how these backgrounds, produced after 122keV $^{57}$Co Compton interactions, behave under different detector conditions. We find that the rates of single- and few-electron signals follow power-laws with time after the interaction. We observe linearly increasing rates with increased extraction field, and increased rates in the single-electron background with increased drift field. Normalizing the rates to the primary interaction's measured ionization signal, the rates increase linearly with the depth of the interaction. We test the hypothesis that infrared photons (1550nm) would stimulate and accelerate electron emission via photodetachment from impurities, but find that even 1 Watt of infrared light fails to reduce these backgrounds. Abstract

The non-linear energy response of the plastic scintillator EJ-260 is measured with the MicroCHANDLER detector, using neutron beams of energy 5 to 27 MeV at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory. The first and second order Birks' constants are extracted from the data, and found to be $k_B = (8.70 \pm 0.93)\times 10^{-3}\ {\rm g/cm^2/MeV}$ and $k_C = (1.42 \pm 1.00) \times 10^{-5}\ {\rm (g/cm^2/MeV)^2}$. This result covers a unique energy range that is of direct relevance for fast neutron backgrounds in reactor inverse beta decay detectors. These measurements will improve the energy non-linearity modeling of plastic scintillator detectors. Abstract

Multiply-interacting massive particles (MIMPs) are heavy (>10^10 GeV/c^2) dark matter particles that interact strongly with regular matter, but may have evaded detection due to the low number density required to make up the local dark matter halo. These particles could leave track-like signatures in current experiments, similar to lightly-ionizing particles. We show that previously calculated limits from the MAJORANA Demonstrator on the flux of lightly-ionizing particles can be used to exclude MIMP dark matter parameter space up to a mass of 10^15 GeV/c^2. We also calculate limits from the standard XENON1T analysis in this high-mass regime, properly taking into account flux limitations and multi-scatter effects. Finally, we show that a dedicated MIMP analysis using the XENON1T dark matter search could probe unexplored parameter space up to masses of 10^18 GeV/c^2., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Abstract

We deployed a small, 80kg, antineutrino detector based on solid plastic scintillator, called MiniCHANDLER for nearly three months at a distance of 25m from a 2.9GW thermal power reactor core at the North Anna Nuclear Generating Station. We report the detection of an antineutrino signal resulting from inverse beta decay at 5.5 sigma significance with no overburden and minimal shielding. This result also demonstrates that 3D segmentation can be used to significantly improve the signal to noise ratio, in this case by a factor of 4. In addition, this measurement represents an observation of the positron spectrum in a small, surface-deployed detector; this observation of reactor antineutrinos was achieved with a mobile neutrino detector mounted in an ordinary, small trailer., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, version accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) provides a unique probe for neutrino properties Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. REactor neutrino LIquid xenon Coherent Scattering experiment (RELICS), a proposed reactor neutrino program using liquid xenon time projection chamber (LXeTPC) technology, aims to investigate the CEvNS process of antineutrinos off xenon atomic nuclei. In this work, the design of the experiment is studied and optimized based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. To achieve a sufficiently low energy threshold for CEvNS detection, an ionization-only analysis channel will be adopted for RELICS. A high emission rate of delayed electrons after a big ionization signal is the major background, leading to an analysis threshold of 120 photo-electrons in the CEvNS search. The second largest background, nuclear recoils induced by cosmic-ray neutrons, is suppressed via a passive water shield. The physics potential of RELICS was explored with a 32 kg-yr exposure at a baseline of 25 m from a reactor core with a 3 GW thermal power. In an energy range of 120 to 240 PEs, we the expected 13673.5 CEvNS and 2133.7 background events.The sensitivity of RELICS to the weak mixing angle was investigated at a low momentum transfer. Our study has shown that RELICS can further improve the constraints on the non-standard neutrino interaction (NSI) compared to the best results. RELICS set out to develop a powerful surface-level detection technology for low-energy neutrinos from reactors.

Abstract

Parallel circuit and the Lorentz forces on current carrying wires are important concepts in introductory physics courses. Here we describe an experiment that illustrates these two concepts. We mount a circuit with multiple grounding points onto a torsion balance. We show that the grounding points create parallel return paths for the supply current. When the topology or the shapes of the return paths are altered, the Lorentz forces exerted by the currents in the return paths within a magnetic field change accordingly, which in turn cause changes in the rotary displacement of the torsion balance. This experiment is simple and can be easily reproduced in a teaching laboratory. What makes it interesting to students is that recently two research teams have attempted to detect thrusts from microwave driven asymmetrical resonance cavities (EmDrive or Cannae Drive), and the phenomenon observable in this experiment provides an alternative explanation to the thrusts they detected., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

At present,medical Ti-xNb-2Fe alloy is widely used,but it still needs follow-up finishing in order to obtain high precision surface quality. The simulation process of Ti-xNb-2Fe alloy was established,a modified Johnson Cook（ J-C）constitutive model considering the effects of strain,strain rate and temperature on flow stress was constructed. And a cutting physical parameters prediction method based on medical Ti-xNb-2Fe alloy was proposed in this work. First,the physical properties calculation software JMatPro was used to obtain the basic data of stress-strain curve of Ti-xNb-2Fe alloy during phase transformation,and the modified J-C model parameters were fitted by variable separation method. Then,on the platform of Advant Edge FEM finite element software,the flow stress model including phase transition was input into the software system through Fortran compiler. Finally,the data results of cutting force,cutting temperature and surface roughness simulated by J-C model and modified J-C model were compared with the physical testing results. The results indicated that the constitutive equation parameter A value and Bvalue decrease by 21% and 27% with the increase of trace element Nb content,respectively. The average percentage errors of cutting force,cutting temperature,surface roughness and physical testing results of finite element simulation using modified model were less than 25%,19% and 30%,respectively. The model can provide the optimization of process parameters for the follow-up finishing of medical Ti-xNb-2Fe alloy.

Abstract

The oil/water interfacial tension plays a crucial role in tertiary oil recovery, and the low interfacial tension facilitates oil emulsification and stripping. Here, anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate and cationic surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide were employed to study their ability to reduce the oil/water interfacial tension (IFT). Experimental results show that the mixed cationic and anionic surfactants could produce lower IFT than that of individual cationic or anionic surfactant, and the lowest IFT could be obtained at molar ratio of CTAB:SDS = 2:1. Employing molecular dynamics simulation method, the oil/water IFT was calculated and gave same changing trend with that of the experiment. The underlying mechanism of IFT modulated by mixed cationic and anionic surfactants was unveiled from the insight of interfacial structure, interfacial energy, interaction energy between different molecules and interface roughness, and so on. We found the hydration radius of counterion as well as the charge distribution of polar headgroup of surfactant together play crucial role determining the ion distribution inside water phase and surfactant/water interface, and further influencing the IFT. Our study provides an atomic-level understanding of the IFT modulated by cationic and anionic surfactants, and our results might have some references for enhanced oil recovery.
