12. Research on influence law of circuit parameters on heating characteristics of graphite heating elements

Abstract

Circuit parameters are the decisive factors for the heating performance of graphite heating elements，and the research on the influence of circuit parameters is the basis for the design of high-performance and high-reliability graphite heaters. The failure process of graphite heating device is investigated，and the reliability quantitative indexes of heating element，temperature uniformity are determined. Four circuit parameters to quantify the output performance are advanced，including the thickness，width of the strip，gap between the strips and radius of the gap rounding. The mechanism of influence of circuit parameters on heating capability and reliability is investigated through coupled thermal electric finite element method analysis. The results show that the thickness can determine the heat output capability，while the remaining three circuit parameters can determine the reliability. The advancements in this paper play an important role in the development of high performance graphite heating device.

13. Image-text Retrieval: A Survey on Recent Research and Development

Abstract

In the past few years, cross-modal image-text retrieval (ITR) has experienced increased interest in the research community due to its excellent research value and broad real-world application. It is designed for the scenarios where the queries are from one modality and the retrieval galleries from another modality. This paper presents a comprehensive and up-to-date survey on the ITR approaches from four perspectives. By dissecting an ITR system into two processes: feature extraction and feature alignment, we summarize the recent advance of the ITR approaches from these two perspectives. On top of this, the efficiency-focused study on the ITR system is introduced as the third perspective. To keep pace with the times, we also provide a pioneering overview of the cross-modal pre-training ITR approaches as the fourth perspective. Finally, we outline the common benchmark datasets and valuation metric for ITR, and conduct the accuracy comparison among the representative ITR approaches. 14. Learning Semantic-Aligned Feature Representation for Text-based Person Search

Abstract

Text-based person search aims to retrieve images of a certain pedestrian by a textual description. The key challenge of this task is to eliminate the inter-modality gap and achieve the feature alignment across modalities. In this paper, we propose a semantic-aligned embedding method for text-based person search, in which the feature alignment across modalities is achieved by automatically learning the semantic-aligned visual features and textual features. First, we introduce two Transformer-based backbones to encode robust feature representations of the images and texts. Second, we design a semantic-aligned feature aggregation network to adaptively select and aggregate features with the same semantics into part-aware features, which is achieved by a multi-head attention module constrained by a cross-modality part alignment loss and a diversity loss. Experimental results on the CUHK-PEDES and Flickr30K datasets show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performances., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, 3 tables

27. Optical synthetic sampling imaging: concept and an example of microscopy

Abstract

Digital two-dimensional (2D) spatial sampling devices (such as charge-coupled device) have been widely used in various imaging systems, especially in computational imaging systems. However, the undersampling of digital sampling devices is a problem that limits the resolution of the acquired images. In this study, we present a synthetic sampling imaging (SSI) concept to solve the undersampling problem. It combines the structured illumination system and conventional 2D image detection system to simultaneously sample the specimen from the illumination and the detection sides. Then, we synthesize the illumination sampling rate and the detection sampling rate to reconstruct a high sampling rate image. The concept of the proposed SSI is demonstrated by an example of microscopy. Experimental results confirm that the proposed method can double the sampling resolution of the microscope. The synthetic sampling scheme, where the sampling task is shared by the illumination and detection sides, provides insight for resolving the undersampling problem of the digital imaging system.

42. Oligodendrocyte Progenitor Cell Transplantation Reduces White Matter Injury in a Fetal Goat Model.

Abstract

Background: Preterm white matter injury (PWMI) is the most common type of brain injury in preterm infants, in which, oligodendrocyte progenitor cells (OPCs) are predominantly damaged. In this study, human OPCs (hOPCs) were administered to a fetal goat model of PWMI to examine the differentiation potential and therapeutic effects of the cells on PWMI. Methods: Preterm goat fetuses were subjected to hypoxic‐ischemia (HI) via intermittent umbilical cord occlusion (5 min × 5). Twenty million hOPCs were administered via a nasal catheter 12 h after an HI insult, and brain tissues were collected 14 or 21 days after the HI insult. Myelin basic protein (MBP) and myelin‐associated glycoprotein (MAG) were detected by immunofluorescence and western blotting techniques. The percentage of myelinated nerve fibers and g‐ratio were examined using transmission electron microscopy. Inflammatory cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. Inflammatory and neurotrophic factors were measured using enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay. Results: Our results showed that intermittent umbilical cord occlusion induced PWMI in fetal goats. Transplanted hOPCs can survive in periventricular and subcortical white matter. Further, transplanted hOPCs expressed markers of mature oligodendrocytes (MBP and MAG) and few cells expressed markers of preoligodendrocytes (NG2 and A2B5), suggesting that these cells can differentiate into mature oligodendrocytes in the brain. In addition, hOPCs administration increased MBP and MAG levels, percentage of myelinated nerve fibers, and thickness of the myelin sheath, indicating a reduction in PWMI. Furthermore, hOPCs did not increase the inflammatory response after HI. Interestingly, hOPC administration decreased tumor necrosis factor‐alpha and increased glial‐derived neurotrophic factor and brain‐derived neurotrophic factor levels after HI, suggesting that additional mechanisms mediate the inflammatory microenvironment and neuroprotective effects. Conclusions: Exogenous hOPCs can differentiate into mature oligodendrocytes in fetal goats and alleviate HI‐induced PWMI. Transplantation of hOPCs is a promising strategy for treating PWMI.
