Quantum learning models hold the potential to bring computational advantages over the classical realm. As powerful quantum servers become available on the cloud, ensuring the protection of clients' private data becomes crucial. By incorporating quantum homomorphic encryption schemes, we present a general framework that enables quantum delegated and federated learning with a computation-theoretical data privacy guarantee. We show that learning and inference under this framework feature substantially lower communication complexity compared with schemes based on blind quantum computing. In addition, in the proposed quantum federated learning scenario, there is less computational burden on local quantum devices from the client side, since the server can operate on encrypted quantum data without extracting any information. We further prove that certain quantum speedups in supervised learning carry over to private delegated learning scenarios employing quantum kernel methods. Quantum computers may outperform classical computers on machine learning tasks. In recent years, a variety of quantum algorithms promising unparalleled potential to enhance, speed up, or innovate machine learning have been proposed. Yet, quantum learning systems, similar to their classical counterparts, may likewise suffer from the catastrophic forgetting problem, where training a model with new tasks would result in a dramatic performance drop for the previously learned ones. This problem is widely believed to be a crucial obstacle to achieving continual learning of multiple sequential tasks. Here, we report an experimental demonstration of quantum continual learning on a fully programmable superconducting processor. In particular, we sequentially train a quantum classifier with three tasks, two about identifying real-life images and the other on classifying quantum states, and demonstrate its catastrophic forgetting through experimentally observed rapid performance drops for prior tasks. To overcome this dilemma, we exploit the elastic weight consolidation strategy and show that the quantum classifier can incrementally learn and retain knowledge across the three distinct tasks, with an average prediction accuracy exceeding 92.3%. In addition, for sequential tasks involving quantum-engineered data, we demonstrate that the quantum classifier can achieve a better continual learning performance than a commonly used classical feedforward network with a comparable number of variational parameters. Bell nonlocality is an intrinsic feature of quantum mechanics, which can be certified via the violation of Bell inequalities. It is therefore a fundamental question to certify Bell nonlocality from experimental data. Here, we present an optimization scheme to improve nonlocality certification by exploring flexible mappings between Bell inequalities and Hamiltonians corresponding to the Bell operators. We show that several Hamiltonian models can be mapped to new inequalities with improved classical bounds than the original one, enabling a more robust detection of nonlocality. From the other direction, we investigate the mapping from fixed Bell inequalities to Hamiltonians, aiming to maximize quantum violations while considering experimental imperfections. As a practical demonstration, we apply this method to an XXZ-like honeycomb-lattice model utilizing over 70 superconducting qubits. The successful application of this technique, as well as combining the two directions to form an optimization loop, may open new avenues for developing more practical and noise-resilient nonlocality certification techniques and enable broader experimental explorations., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 1 table

Quantum nonlocality describes a stronger form of quantum correlation than that of entanglement. It refutes Einstein's belief of local realism and is among the most distinctive and enigmatic features of quantum mechanics. It is a crucial resource for achieving quantum advantages in a variety of practical applications, ranging from cryptography and certified random number generation via self-testing to machine learning. Nevertheless, the detection of nonlocality, especially in quantum many-body systems, is notoriously challenging. Here, we report an experimental certification of genuine multipartite Bell correlations, which signal nonlocality in quantum many-body systems, up to 24 qubits with a fully programmable superconducting quantum processor. In particular, we employ energy as a Bell correlation witness and variationally decrease the energy of a many-body system across a hierarchy of thresholds, below which an increasing Bell correlation depth can be certified from experimental data. As an illustrating example, we variationally prepare the low-energy state of a two-dimensional honeycomb model with 73 qubits and certify its Bell correlations by measuring an energy that surpasses the corresponding classical bound with up to 48 standard deviations. In addition, we variationally prepare a sequence of low-energy states and certify their genuine multipartite Bell correlations up to 24 qubits via energies measured efficiently by parity oscillation and multiple quantum coherence techniques. Our results establish a viable approach for preparing and certifying multipartite Bell correlations, which provide not only a finer benchmark beyond entanglement for quantum devices, but also a valuable guide towards exploiting multipartite Bell correlation in a wide spectrum of practical applications., Comment: 11 pages,6 figures + 14 pages, 6 figures

We study quantum-classical separations between classical and quantum supervised learning models based on constant depth (i.e., shallow) circuits, in scenarios with and without noises. We construct a classification problem defined by a noiseless shallow quantum circuit and rigorously prove that any classical neural network with bounded connectivity requires logarithmic depth to output correctly with a larger-than-exponentially-small probability. This unconditional near-optimal quantum-classical separation originates from the quantum nonlocality property that distinguishes quantum circuits from their classical counterparts. We further derive the noise thresholds for demonstrating such a separation on near-term quantum devices under the depolarization noise model. We prove that this separation will persist if the noise strength is upper bounded by an inverse polynomial with respect to the system size, and vanish if the noise strength is greater than an inverse polylogarithmic function. In addition, for quantum devices with constant noise strength, we prove that no super-polynomial classical-quantum separation exists for any classification task defined by shallow Clifford circuits, independent of the structures of the circuits that specify the learning models., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Non-Abelian topological orders offer an intriguing path towards fault-tolerant quantum computation, where information can be encoded and manipulated in a topologically protected manner immune to arbitrary local noises and perturbations. However, realizing non-Abelian topologically ordered states is notoriously challenging in both condensed matter and programmable quantum systems, and it was not until recently that signatures of non-Abelian statistics were observed through digital quantum simulation approaches. Despite these exciting progresses, none of them has demonstrated the appropriate type of topological orders and associated non-Abelian anyons whose braidings alone support universal quantum computation. Here, we report the realization of non-Abelian topologically ordered states of the Fibonacci string-net model and demonstrate braidings of Fibonacci anyons featuring universal computational power, with a superconducting quantum processor. We exploit efficient quantum circuits to prepare the desired states and verify their nontrivial topological nature by measuring the topological entanglement entropy. In addition, we create two pairs of Fibonacci anyons and demonstrate their fusion rule and non-Abelian braiding statistics by applying unitary gates on the underlying physical qubits. Our results establish a versatile digital approach to exploring exotic non-Abelian topological states and their associated braiding statistics with current noisy intermediate-scale quantum processors.

Topologically ordered phases of matter elude Landau's symmetry-breaking theory, featuring a variety of intriguing properties such as long-range entanglement and intrinsic robustness against local perturbations. Their extension to periodically driven systems gives rise to exotic new phenomena that are forbidden in thermal equilibrium. Here, we report the observation of signatures of such a phenomenon -- a prethermal topologically ordered time crystal -- with programmable superconducting qubits arranged on a square lattice. By periodically driving the superconducting qubits with a surface-code Hamiltonian, we observe discrete time-translation symmetry breaking dynamics that is only manifested in the subharmonic temporal response of nonlocal logical operators. We further connect the observed dynamics to the underlying topological order by measuring a nonzero topological entanglement entropy and studying its subsequent dynamics. Quantum tangent kernel methods provide an efficient approach to analyzing the performance of quantum machine learning models in the infinite-width limit, which is of crucial importance in designing appropriate circuit architectures for certain learning tasks. Recently, they have been adapted to describe the convergence rate of training errors in quantum neural networks in an analytical manner. Here, we study the connections between the trainability and expressibility of quantum tangent kernel models. In particular, for global loss functions, we rigorously prove that high expressibility of both the global and local quantum encodings can lead to exponential concentration of quantum tangent kernel values to zero. Whereas for local loss functions, such issue of exponential concentration persists owing to the high expressibility, but can be partially mitigated. We further carry out extensive numerical simulations to support our analytical theories. Sodium-ion batteries exhibit significant promise as a viable alternative to current lithium-ion technologies owing to their sustainability, low cost per energy density, reliability, and safety. Despite recent advancements in cathode materials for this category of energy storage systems, the primary challenge in realizing practical applications of sodium-ion systems is the absence of an anode system with high energy density and durability. Although Na metal is the ultimate anode that can facilitate high-energy sodium-ion batteries, its use remains limited due to safety concerns and the high-capacity loss associated with the high reactivity of Na metal. In this study, titration gas chromatography is employed to accurately quantify the sodium inventory loss in ether- and carbonate-based electrolytes. Uniaxial pressure is developed as a powerful tool to control the deposition of sodium metal with dense morphology, thereby enabling high initial coulombic efficiencies. In ether-based electrolytes, the Na metal surface exhibits the presence of a uniform solid electrolyte interphase layer, primarily characterized by favorable inorganic chemical components with close-packed structures. The full cell, utilizing a controlled electroplated sodium metal in ether-based electrolyte, provides capacity retention of 91.84% after 500 cycles at 2C current rate and delivers 86 mAh/g discharge capacity at 45C current rate, suggesting the potential to enable Na metal in the next generation of sodium-ion technologies with specifications close to practical requirements.

Prelithiation as a facile and effective method to compensate the lithium inventory loss in the initial cycle has progressed considerably both on anode and cathode sides. However, much less research has been devoted to the prelithiation effect on the interface stabilization for long-term cycling of Si-based anodes. An in-depth quantitative analysis of the interface that form during the prelithiation of SiO$_x$ is presented here and the results are compared with prelithiaton of Si anodes. Local structure probe combined with detailed electrochemical analysis reveals that a characteristic mosaic interface is formed on both prelithiated SiO$_x$ and Si anodes. This mosaic interface containing multiple lithium silicates phases, is fundamentally different from the solid electrolyte interface (SEI) formed without prelithiation. The ideal conductivity and mechanical properties of lithium silicates enable improved cycling stability of both prelithiated anodes. With a higher ratio of lithium silicates due to the oxygen participation, prelithiated SiO$_{1.3}$ anode improves the initial coulombic efficiency to 94% in full cell and delivers good cycling retention after hundreds cycles under lean electrolyte conditions. The insights provided in this work could be used to further optimize high Si loading based anode in future high energy density batteries.

Lithium (Li) metal anodes are essential for developing next-generation high-energy-density batteries. Numerous concerns on the potential safety hazards of the Li metal have been brought up before its massive application in commercialized battery packs. However, few investigations have been performed to systematically evaluate the reactivity of Li metal anode in full cell level. Here, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) with in situ Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) are used to quantitatively investigate the Li metal reactivity. Lithiated graphite (Li-Gr) and lithiated silicon (Li-Si) are also studied as the comparison samples. The reactivity of the plated Li when coupled with different electrolyte composition, morphology, and atmosphere is systematically studied. More importantly, the reactivity of Li metal full cell with different cathode materials (NMC622, LFP and LNMO) has been compared. It was found that all cell components, including electrolyte composition, Li morphology, the control of inactive Li accumulation and cathode stability, are essential in controlling the reactivity of the plated Li. After optimizing these conditions, the Li metal full cell shows no significant thermal reaction up to 400C. This work identifies the key parameters in controlling the reactivity of the plated Li and may facilitate lithium metal battery design and manufacturing in the coming future.

The interplay between quantum physics and machine learning gives rise to the emergent frontier of quantum machine learning, where advanced quantum learning models may outperform their classical counterparts in solving certain challenging problems. However, quantum learning systems are vulnerable to adversarial attacks: adding tiny carefully-crafted perturbations on legitimate input samples can cause misclassifications. To address this issue, we propose a general scheme to protect quantum learning systems from adversarial attacks by randomly encoding the legitimate data samples through unitary or quantum error correction encoders. In particular, we rigorously prove that both global and local random unitary encoders lead to exponentially vanishing gradients (i.e. barren plateaus) for any variational quantum circuits that aim to add adversarial perturbations, independent of the input data and the inner structures of adversarial circuits and quantum classifiers. In addition, we prove a rigorous bound on the vulnerability of quantum classifiers under local unitary adversarial attacks. We show that random black-box quantum error correction encoders can protect quantum classifiers against local adversarial noises and their robustness increases as we concatenate error correction codes. To quantify the robustness enhancement, we adapt quantum differential privacy as a measure of the prediction stability for quantum classifiers. Our results establish versatile defense strategies for quantum classifiers against adversarial perturbations, which provide valuable guidance to enhance the reliability and security for both near-term and future quantum learning technologies.

Deep learning and quantum computing have achieved dramatic progresses in recent years. The interplay between these two fast-growing fields gives rise to a new research frontier of quantum machine learning. In this work, we report the first experimental demonstration of training deep quantum neural networks via the backpropagation algorithm with a six-qubit programmable superconducting processor. In particular, we show that three-layer deep quantum neural networks can be trained efficiently to learn two-qubit quantum channels with a mean fidelity up to 96.0% and the ground state energy of molecular hydrogen with an accuracy up to 93.3% compared to the theoretical value. In addition, six-layer deep quantum neural networks can be trained in a similar fashion to achieve a mean fidelity up to 94.8% for learning single-qubit quantum channels. Our experimental results explicitly showcase the advantages of deep quantum neural networks, including quantum analogue of the backpropagation algorithm and less stringent coherence-time requirement for their constituting physical qubits, thus providing a valuable guide for quantum machine learning applications with both near-term and future quantum devices., Comment: 7 pages (main text) + 11 pages (Supplementary Information), 10 figures

Non-Abelian anyons are exotic quasiparticle excitations hosted by certain topological phases of matter. They break the fermion-boson dichotomy and obey non-Abelian braiding statistics: their interchanges yield unitary operations, rather than merely a phase factor, in a space spanned by topologically degenerate wavefunctions. They are the building blocks of topological quantum computing. However, experimental observation of non-Abelian anyons and their characterizing braiding statistics is notoriously challenging and has remained elusive hitherto, in spite of various theoretical proposals. Here, we report an experimental quantum digital simulation of projective non-Abelian anyons and their braiding statistics with up to 68 programmable superconducting qubits arranged on a two-dimensional lattice. By implementing the ground states of the toric-code model with twists through quantum circuits, we demonstrate that twists exchange electric and magnetic charges and behave as a particular type of non-Abelian anyons, i.e., the Ising anyons. In particular, we show experimentally that these twists follow the fusion rules and non-Abelian braiding statistics of the Ising type, and can be explored to encode topological logical qubits. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to implement both single- and two-qubit logic gates through applying a sequence of elementary Pauli gates on the underlying physical qubits. Our results demonstrate a versatile quantum digital approach for simulating non-Abelian anyons, offering a new lens into the study of such peculiar quasiparticles.

Lithium fluorinated carbon is one of the most promising chemistries for high-energy-density primary energy storage systems in applications where rechargeability is not required. Though Li/CFx demonstrates high energy density under ambient conditions, achieving such a high energy density when exposed to subzero temperatures remains a challenge, particularly under high current density. Here, we report a liquefied gas electrolyte with an anion-pair solvation structure based on dimethyl ether with a low melting point and low viscosity, leading to high ionic conductivity between a wide temperature range. Besides that, through systematic X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy integrated with transmission electron microscopy characterizations, we evaluate the interface of CFx for low-temperature performance. We conclude that the fast transport and anion-pairing solvation structure of the electrolyte bring about reduced charge transfer resistance at low temperatures, which resulted in significantly enhanced performance of Li/CFx cells. Utilizing 50 mg/cm2 loading electrodes, the Li/CFx still displayed 1530 Wh/kg at reduced temperature. This work provides insights into the electrolyte design that may overcome the operational limits of batteries in extreme environments.

Lithium phosphorus oxynitride (LiPON) is a well-known amorphous thin film solid electrolyte that has been extensively studied in the last three decades. Despite the promises to pair with Li metal anode and various cathode materials, the presence of rigid substrate and LiPONs unique amorphous, air-sensitive nature set limitations to comprehensively understand its intrinsic properties for future development and applications. This work demonstrates a methodology to synthesize LiPON in a freestanding form that exhibits remarkable flexibility and a Young s modulus of ~33 GPa. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (ss-NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results with unprecedented high signal-to-noise ratio could be obtained with such freestanding LiPON (FS-LiPON), revealing the Li-LiPON interface bonding environments quantitatively and a well-defined glass transition temperature for LiPON. Combining interfacial stress and a seeding layer, FS-LiPON demonstrates a uniform and fully dense Li metal deposition without the aid of external pressure. Such a FS-LiPON film offers new opportunities for fundamental study of LiPON material and associated interfaces, and provides perspectives for interface engineering in bulk solid-state battery.

Machine learning has achieved dramatic success over the past decade, with applications ranging from face recognition to natural language processing. Meanwhile, rapid progress has been made in the field of quantum computation including developing both powerful quantum algorithms and advanced quantum devices. The interplay between machine learning and quantum physics holds the intriguing potential for bringing practical applications to the modern society. Here, we focus on quantum neural networks in the form of parameterized quantum circuits. We will mainly discuss different structures and encoding strategies of quantum neural networks for supervised learning tasks, and benchmark their performance utilizing Yao.jl, a quantum simulation package written in Julia Language. The lithium (Li) metal anode is essential for next generation high energy density rechargeable Li metal batteries. Although extensive studies have been performed to prolong the cycle life of Li metal batteries, the calendar life, which associates with chemical corrosion of Li metal in liquid electrolytes, has not been quantitatively understood. Here, by combing the Titration Gas Chromatography (TGC) method and Cryogenic Focused Ion Beam (Cryo-FIB), we established a quantitative relationship between the chemical corrosion rate and electrochemically deposited Li morphology in various liquid electrolyte systems. We identified that the corrosion rate is dominated by the porosity of the deposited Li. The larger the porosity of deposited Li has, the faster the corrosion rate will be. We further proposed strategies to mitigate the chemical corrosion on Li thus to extend the calendar life of Li metal batteries. By strictly controlling the stacking pressure during Li plating, Li deposits with ultra-low porosity can be achieved, suppressing the corrosion rate to 0.08% per day compared with 1.71% per day of the high-porosity Li.

Quantum computing promises to enhance machine learning and artificial intelligence. Different quantum algorithms have been proposed to improve a wide spectrum of machine learning tasks. Yet, recent theoretical works show that, similar to traditional classifiers based on deep classical neural networks, quantum classifiers would suffer from the vulnerability problem: adding tiny carefully-crafted perturbations to the legitimate original data samples would facilitate incorrect predictions at a notably high confidence level. This will pose serious problems for future quantum machine learning applications in safety and security-critical scenarios. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of quantum adversarial learning with programmable superconducting qubits. We train quantum classifiers, which are built upon variational quantum circuits consisting of ten transmon qubits featuring average lifetimes of 150 $\mu$s, and average fidelities of simultaneous single- and two-qubit gates above 99.94% and 99.4% respectively, with both real-life images (e.g., medical magnetic resonance imaging scans) and quantum data. We demonstrate that these well-trained classifiers (with testing accuracy up to 99%) can be practically deceived by small adversarial perturbations, whereas an adversarial training process would significantly enhance their robustness to such perturbations. Our results reveal experimentally a crucial vulnerability aspect of quantum learning systems under adversarial scenarios and demonstrate an effective defense strategy against adversarial attacks, which provide a valuable guide for quantum artificial intelligence applications with both near-term and future quantum devices., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, 8 algorithms

Capsule networks, which incorporate the paradigms of connectionism and symbolism, have brought fresh insights into artificial intelligence. The capsule, as the building block of capsule networks, is a group of neurons represented by a vector to encode different features of an entity. The information is extracted hierarchically through capsule layers via routing algorithms. Here, we introduce a quantum capsule network (dubbed QCapsNet) together with an efficient quantum dynamic routing algorithm. To benchmark the performance of the QCapsNet, we carry out extensive numerical simulations on the classification of handwritten digits and symmetry-protected topological phases, and show that the QCapsNet can achieve an enhanced accuracy and outperform conventional quantum classifiers evidently. We further unpack the output capsule state and find that a particular subspace may correspond to a human-understandable feature of the input data, which indicates the potential explainability of such networks. Machine learning has achieved dramatic success in a broad spectrum of applications. Its interplay with quantum physics may lead to unprecedented perspectives for both fundamental research and commercial applications, giving rise to an emergent research frontier of quantum machine learning. Along this line, quantum classifiers, which are quantum devices that aim to solve classification problems in machine learning, have attracted tremendous attention recently. In this review, we give a relatively comprehensive overview for the studies of quantum classifiers, with a focus on recent advances. First, we will review a number of quantum classification algorithms, including quantum support vector machines, quantum kernel methods, quantum decision tree classifiers, quantum nearest neighbor algorithms, and quantum annealing based classifiers. Then, we move on to introduce the variational quantum classifiers, which are essentially variational quantum circuits for classifications. We will review different architectures for constructing variational quantum classifiers and introduce the barren plateau problem, where the training of quantum classifiers might be hindered by the exponentially vanishing gradient. In addition, the vulnerability aspect of quantum classifiers in the setting of adversarial learning and the recent experimental progress on different quantum classifiers will also be discussed., Comment: invited review, 24 pages, 11 figures

Private distributed learning studies the problem of how multiple distributed entities collaboratively train a shared deep network with their private data unrevealed. With the security provided by the protocols of blind quantum computation, the cooperation between quantum physics and machine learning may lead to unparalleled prospect for solving private distributed learning tasks. In this paper, we introduce a quantum protocol for distributed learning that is able to utilize the computational power of the remote quantum servers while keeping the private data safe. For concreteness, we first introduce a protocol for private single-party delegated training of variational quantum classifiers based on blind quantum computing and then extend this protocol to multiparty private distributed learning incorporated with differential privacy. We carry out extensive numerical simulations with different real-life datasets and encoding strategies to benchmark the effectiveness of our protocol. We find that our protocol is robust to experimental imperfections and is secure under the gradient attack after the incorporation of differential privacy. Our results show the potential for handling computationally expensive distributed learning tasks with privacy guarantees, thus providing a valuable guide for exploring quantum advantages from the security perspective in the field of machine learning with real-life applications., Comment: 6.5 pages (main text) + 4 pages (supplementary materials), 12 figures

The development of silicon anodes to replace conventional graphite in efforts to increase energy densities of lithium-ion batteries has been largely impeded by poor interfacial stability against liquid electrolytes. Here, stable operation of 99.9 weight% micro-Si (uSi) anode is enabled by utilizing the interface passivating properties of sulfide based solid-electrolytes. Bulk to surface characterization, as well as quantification of interfacial components showed that such an approach eliminates continuous interfacial growth and irreversible lithium losses. In uSi || layered-oxide full cells, high current densities at room temperature (5 mA cm 2), wide operating temperature (-20{\deg}C to 80{\deg}C) and high loadings (>11 mAh cm-2) were demonstrated for both charge and discharge operations. The promising battery performance can be attributed to both the desirable interfacial property between uSi and sulfide electrolytes, as well as the unique chemo-mechanical behavior of the Li-Si alloys., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is regarded as the most complex but the least understood constituent in secondary batteries using liquid and solid electrolytes. The nanostructures of SEIs were recently reported to be equally important to the chemistry of SEIs for stabilizing Li metal in liquid electrolyte. However, the dearth of such knowledge in all-solid-state battery (ASSB) has hindered a complete understanding of how certain solid-state electrolytes, such as LiPON, manifest exemplary stability against Li metal. Characterizing such solid-solid interfaces is difficult due to the buried, highly reactive, and beam-sensitive nature of the constituents within. By employing cryogenic electron microscopy (cryo-EM), the interphase between Li metal and LiPON is successfully preserved and probed, revealing a multilayer mosaic SEI structure with concentration gradients of nitrogen and phosphorous, materializing as crystallites within an amorphous matrix. This unique SEI nanostructure is less than 80 nm and is shown stable and free of any organic lithium containing species or lithium fluoride components, in contrast to SEIs often found in state-of-the-art organic liquid electrolytes. Our findings reveal insights on the nanostructures and chemistry of such SEIs as a key component in lithium metal batteries to stabilize Li metal anode.
