The fallback disk model is widely accepted to explain long-period neutron stars (NSs) which can't be simulated by magnetic dipole radiation. However, no confirmed detection of disk was found from the newly discovered long period pulsars GLEAM-X 162759.5-523504.3, GPM J1839-10 and the known slowest isolated NSs 1E 161348-5055. This might be that the disks have either been in noninteracting/inactive state where its emission is too weak to be detected or have been disrupted. In this work, we conduct simulations to examine the lifetime of supernova fallback disks around isolated neutron stars. We assume that the disk's mass varies in a self-similar way and its interaction with the NS occurs only in interacting/active state. Our results reveal that nearly all the interacting lifetimes for the disk are shorter than 0.1 Myr while the existence lifetimes are considerably longer., Comment: Accepted in ApJ, comments are welcome

In this paper, we give a new derivation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on a compact Riemannian manifold $M$ via the Bellman dynamic programming principle on the infinite dimensional group of volume preserving diffeomorphisms $G={\rm SDiff}(M)$. In particular, when the viscosity vanishes, we give a new derivation of the incompressible Euler equation on a compact Riemannian manifold. The main result of this paper indicates an interesting relationship between the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations on $M$ and the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation on $G={\rm SDiff}(M)$.

Neutron star$-$white dwarf (NSWD) binaries are one of the most abundant sources of gravitational waves (GW) in the Milky Way. These GW sources are the evolutionary products of primordial binaries that experienced many processes of binary interaction. We employ a binary population synthesis method to investigate the properties of Galactic NSWD binaries detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). In this paper, only the NSWD systems with a COWD or ONeWD component are included. We consider various models related to mass transfer efficiencies during primordial binary evolution, supernova explosion mechanisms at NS formation, common envelope ejection efficiencies, and critical WD masses that determining the stability of mass transfer between WDs and NSs. Based on our calculations, we estimate that tens to hundreds of LISA NSWD binaries exist in the Milky Way. We find that the detection of LISA NSWD binaries is able to provide profound insights into mass transfer efficiencies during the evolution of primordial binaries and critical WD masses during mass transfer from a WD to an NS., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, accepted to MNRAS

Magnetars and central compact objects (CCOs) are subgroups of neutron stars that show a number of properties distinguished from canonical radio pulsars. We performed radio observations of three magnetars SGR 0418+5729, 1E 2259+586, 4U 0142+61, and a CCO PSR J1852+0040 with the Fivehundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST) at 1.25 GHz, aiming to search for radio pulsations in their quiescent states. During two observation epochs, no radio pulses have been detected towards any target above a significance of signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) = 7 from either the direct folding or blind search. We provided the most stringent upper limit of radio flux (<~ 2 -- 4 $\mu$Jy) for the magnetars and the CCO. For the magnetars with long periods, the real upper limits are likely an order of magnitude larger due to the red noise. The detection of gravitational wave events has stimulated theoretical modeling of the formation and evolution of double compact objects (DCOs). However, even for the most studied isolated binary evolution channel, there exist large uncertainties in the input parameters and treatments of the binary evolution process. So far, double neutron stars (DNSs) are the only DCOs for which direct observations are available through traditional electromagnetic astronomy. In this work, we adopt a population synthesis method to investigate the formation and evolution of Galactic DNSs. We construct 324 models for the formation of Galactic DNSs, taking into account various possible combinations of critical input parameters and processes such as mass transfer efficiency, supernova type, common envelope efficiency, neutron star kick velocity, and pulsar selection effect. We employ Bayesian analysis to evaluate the adopted models by comparing with observations. We also compare the expected DNS merger rate in the Galaxy with that inferred from the known Galactic population of Pulsar-NS systems. Electron-capture supernovae (EC-SNe) provide an alternative channel for producing neutron stars (NSs). They play an important role in the formation of double NS (DNS) systems and the chemical evolution of galaxies, and contribute to the NS mass distribution in observations. It is generally believed that EC-SNe originate from $e$-captures on $\rm^{24}Mg$ and $\rm^{20}Ne$ in the massive degenerate oxygen-neon (ONe) cores with masses close to the Chandrasekhar limit ($M_{\rm Ch}$). However, the origin of EC-SNe is still uncertain. In this paper, we systematically studied the EC-SNe in NS+He star systems by considering the explosive oxygen burning that may occur in the near-$M_{\rm Ch}$ ONe core. We provided the initial parameter spaces for producing EC-SNe in the initial orbital period $-$ initial He star mass (log$P_{\rm orb}^{\rm i}-M_{\rm He}^{\rm i}$) diagram, and found that both $M_{\rm He}^{\rm i}$ and minimum $P_{\rm orb}^{\rm i}$ for EC-SNe increase with metallicity. Then, by considering NS kicks added to the newborn NS, we investigated the properties of the formed DNS systems after the He star companions collapse into NSs, such as the orbital periods, eccentricities and spin periods of recycle pulsars ($P_{\rm spin}$), etc. The results show that most of the observed DNS systems can be produced by NS kicks of $\lesssim50\rm\,km\,s^{-1}$. In addition, we found that NSs could accrete more material if the residual H envelope on the He star companions is considered, which can form the mildly recycled pulsars ($P_{\rm spin}\sim20\,$ms) in DNS systems., Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS, comments welcome!

We will develop some elements in stochastic analysis in the Wasserstein space $\mathbb{P}_2(M)$ over a compact Riemannian manifold $M$, such as intrinsic It$\^o$ formulae, stochastic regular curves and parallel translations along them. We will establish the existence of parallel translations along regular curves, or stochastic regular curves in case of $\mathbb{P}_2(\mathbb{T})$. Surprisingly enough, in this last case, the equation defining stochastic parallel translations is a SDE on a Hilbert space, instead of a SPDE.

The disc instability mechanism (DIM) is widely accepted to account for the transient behaviour of dwarf novae (DNe), which experience short outbursts separated by long quiescence. The duty cycle (the ratio between the outburst duration and the recurrence time) determines the amount of accreted mass by the white dwarf (WDs) during outbursts, thus playing an important role in the long-term binary evolution. Employing the code of Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics, we systemically investigate the influence of the duty cycles on the evolution of DNe and the mass growth of accreting carbon-oxygen (CO) WDs. Our calculations show that, while the DIM can considerably influence the accretion process, efficient WD-mass growth requires a particular range of the duty cycle. For WDs with the initial masses of 0.6, 0.7 and 1.1 $M_\odot$, these duty cycles are 0.006$\,\leq$$d$$\,\leq$0.007, $d$\,=\,0.005 and $d$\,=\,0.003, and the accumulated mass of the WDs can reach 0.1, 0.13 and 0.21 $M_\odot$, respectively. In all of our simulations, no CO WDs can grow their masses to the explosion mass of Type Ia supernovae of about $1.38~M_\odot$. Because of a much short timescale of the outburst state, the final donor-star masses and orbital periods are insensitive to the duty cycles. Helium white dwarfs (HeWDs) are thought to form from low-mass red giant stars experiencing binary interaction. Because the helium core mass of a red giant star is closely related to the stellar radius, there exists well-known relation between the orbital period ($P_{\rm orb}$) and the mass ($M_{\rm WD}$) of the HeWDs, which is almost independent of the type of the companion star. Traditional derivation of the $M_{\rm WD}$-$P_{\rm orb}$ relation generally neglected the effect of wind mass loss from the red giants, while observations show that wind mass loss from red giants in binary systems is systematically higher than that from isolated stars. In this work, we calculate binary evolution with tidally enhanced stellar wind (TEW) and find that it causes significantly scatter of the traditional $M_{\rm WD}$-$P_{\rm orb}$ relation. The TEW can prevent the red giants from overflowing their Roche lobes and slow down the growth of the helium core, leaving a lower-mass HeWD for given orbital period. This scenario may account for some of the HeWD binaries that deviate from the traditional $M_{\rm WD}$-$P_{\rm orb}$ relation. Observations of elliptical galaxies suggest that black holes (BHs) might serve as dark energy candidates, coupled to the expansion of the Universe. According to this hypothesis, the mass of a BH could increase as the Universe expands. BH low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) in the Galactic disk were born several gigayears ago, making the coupling effect potentially significant. In this work, we calculate the evolution of BH binaries with a binary population synthesis method to examine the possible influence of cosmologically-coupled growth of BHs, if it really exists. The measured masses of the compact objects in LMXBs show a gap around $\sim 2.5-5~{\rm M_\odot}$, separating the most massive neutron stars from the least massive BHs. Our calculated results indicate that, considering the mass growth seem to (partially) account for the mass gap and the formation of compact BH LMXBs, alleviating the challenges in modeling the formation and evolution of BH LMXBs with traditional theory. It is widely accepted that quite a number of double compact objects (DCOs) in the Milky Way can be identified by future space-based gravitational wave (GW) detectors, while systematic investigations on the detection of the GW sources in nearby galaxies are still lacking. In this paper, we present calculations of potential populations of GW sources for all types of DCOs in the Local Group galaxy M31. For M31, we use an age-dependent model for the evolution of the metallicity and the star-formation rate. By varying assumptions of common-envelope ejection efficiencies and supernova-explosion mechanisms during binary evolution, we make predictions on the properties of DCOs that can be detected by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA). Our calculations indicate that a few (a dozen) DCOs are likely to be observed by LISA during its 4 (10) yr mission. We expect that the sources with black-hole components are more likely to be firstly identified during a 4-yr mission since these binaries have relatively large chirp masses, while the systems with white-dwarf components dominate the overall population of detectable GW sources during a 10-yr mission. LISA can only detect very tight fast-merging systems in M31, corresponding to the peak of orbital period distribution from $\sim 2$ min for double white dwarfs to $\sim 20$~min for double black holes., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 1 table, accepted by ApJ

We introduce the New-ANGELS program, an XMM-Newton survey of $\sim7.2\rm~deg^2$ area around M 31, which aims to study the X-ray populations in M 31 disk and the X-ray emitting hot gas in the inner halo of M 31 up to 30 kpc. In this first paper, we report the catalogue of 4506 detected X-ray sources, and attempt to cross-identify or roughly classify them. We identify 352 single stars in the foreground, 35 globular clusters and 27 supernova remnants associated with M 31, as well as 62 AGNs, 59 galaxies, and 1 galaxy clusters in the background. We uniquely classify 236 foreground stars and 17 supersoft sources based on their X-ray colors. X-ray binaries (83 LMXBs, 1 HMXBs) are classified based on their X-ray colors and X-ray variabilities. The remaining X-ray sources either have too low S/N to calculate their X-ray colors or do not have a unique classification, so are regarded as unclassified. The X-ray source catalogue is published online. GW190521 is the most massive merging binary black hole (BBH) system detected so far. At least one of the component BHs was measured to lie within the pair-instability supernova (PISN) mass gap ($\sim 50-135\;{\rm M}_{\odot}$), making its formation a mystery. However, the transient observed signal allows alternative posterior distributions. There was suggestion that GW190521 could be an intermediate-mass ratio inspiral (IMRI), with the component masses $m_1\sim 170\;{\rm M}_{\odot}$ and $m_2\sim 16 \;{\rm M}_{\odot}$, happening to straddle the PISN mass gap. Under this framework, we perform binary population synthesis to explore the formation of GW190521-like systems via isolated binary evolution. We numerically calculate the binding energy parameter for massive stars at different metallicities, and employ them in our calculation for common envelope evolution. Our results prefer that the progenitor binaries formed in metal-poor environment with $\rm Z\leq0.0016$. The predicted merger rate density within redshift $z=1.1$ is $\sim 4\times 10^{-5}-5\times 10^{-2} \,\rm Gpc^{-3}yr^{-1}$. Neutron stars (NSs) play essential roles in modern astrophysics. Magnetic fields and spin periods of newborn (zero age) NSs have large impact on the further evolution of NSs, which are however poorly explored in observation due to the difficulty of finding newborn NSs. In this work, we aim to infer the magnetic fields and spin periods (Bi and Pi) of zero-age NSs from the observed properties of NS population. We select non-accretion NSs (NANSs) whose evolution is solely determined by magnetic dipole radiation. The magnetic inclination angle $\chi$, namely the angle between the spin and magnetic axes of a neutron star (NS), plays a vital role in its observational characteristics. However, there are few systematic investigations on its long-term evolution, especially for accreting NSs in binary systems. Applying the model of \citet{2021MNRAS.505.1775B} and the binary evolution code \mesa{}, we simultaneously simulate the evolution of the accretion rate, spin period, magnetic field, and magnetic inclination angle of accreting NSs in intermediate/low X-ray binaries (I/LMXBs). We show that the evolution of $\chi$ depends not only on the initial parameters of the binary systems, but also on the mass transfer history and the efficiency of pulsar loss. Based on the calculated results we present the characteristic distribution of $\chi$ for various types of systems including ultracompact X-ray binaries, binary millisecond pulsars, and ultraluminous X-ray sources, and discuss their possible observational implications., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Recent discoveries of gravitational wave (GW) events most likely originating from black hole (BH) + neutron star (NS) mergers reveal the existence of BH+NS binaries. The formation of BH+NS binaries and their merger rates through isolated binary evolution have been investigated extensively with population synthesis simulations. A detailed stellar evolution modelings of the formation of this population, however, is missing in the literature. In this work, we perform the first complete 1D model of more than 30 BH+NS progenitor systems which are calculated self-consistently until the iron core collapse with infall velocity exceeds 1000 km s^-1. Focusing on the progenitors of BH- NS GW sources, we apply the MESA code starting from a post-common envelope binary with short orbital period (< 1 day) consisting of a BH and a zero-age main-sequence helium star that experiences stable mass transfer. These NS masses could be significantly larger depending on the exact mass cut during the supernova explosion. These BH+NS systems are likely to merge and produce GW events within a Hubble time. System C is a potential progenitor of a GW200115-like event, while Systems A and B are possible candidates for a GW200105-like event and may represent the final destiny of the X-ray binary SS433., Comment: 14pages, 9 figures, Accepted to be published on ApJ

The standard formation theory of binary millisecond pulsars (BMSPs) predicts efficient orbital circularization due to tidal interaction during the previous mass transfer phase. Therefore, BMSPs are expected to have a circular orbit. However, the discovery of several eccentric BMSPs (eBMSPs) with a white dwarf (WD) companion has challenged this picture. In particular, recent observation reveals that the spin angular momentum of the eBMSP J0955$-$6150 is tilted at an angle $>4.8^{\rm \degree}$ from the orbital angular momentum. This is the first time that a tilt angle is deduced for eBMSPs, which provides an important clue to their formation mechanism. Both the orbital eccentricity and tilt angle could be qualitatively accounted for by asymmetrical mass ejection during thermonuclear flashes from proto-WDs (so-called the thermonuclear rocket model), but detailed studies are still lacking. In this paper, we simulate the impact of the kick caused by asymmetrical mass ejection on the properties of BMSPs. We find that the thermonuclear rocket model can potentially explain the observational characteristics of both eBMSPs and normal BMSPs under reasonable input parameters. Recent studies have revealed the global deposition on Earth of radioactive elements (e.g., $^{60}$Fe) resulting from the metal-enriched ejecta of nearby (within $\sim 100$ pc) supernova explosions. The majority of neutron stars in our Solar neighborhood remain to be discovered. Here we report the discovery of the nearest ($127.7 \pm 0.3$ pc) neutron star candidate in the single-lined spectroscopic binary LAMOST J235456.76+335625.7 (hereafter J2354). Utilizing the multi-epoch spectra and high-cadence periodic light curves, we measure the mass of the visible star ($M_{\rm vis}=0.70\pm 0.05\ M_{\odot}$) and determine the mass function of the invisible object $f(M)=0.525 \pm 0.004\ M_{\odot}$, i.e., the mass of the unseen compact object is $M_{\rm inv} \geq 1.26 \pm 0.03\ M_{\odot}$. The excess UV emission due to a hot supramassive white dwarf is absent. Hence, it is likely that J2354 harbors a neutron star. J2354 is X-ray dim (the $0.1$--$2.4$ keV luminosity $<10^{30}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$) since it is not detected in the ROSAT all-sky surveys in X-ray. One-hour exceptionally sensitive radio follow-up observations with FAST, the largest single-dish radio telescope, failed to reveal any radio pulsating signals (the potential pulse power at $1.4$ GHz is $<6.8\times 10^{23}\ {\rm erg\ s^{-1}}$). Hence, the neutron star candidate in J2354 can only be discovered via our time-resolved observations. The alternative scenario involving a nearby supramassive cold white dwarf cannot be fully excluded. Our discovery demonstrates a promising way to unveil the missing population of backyard inactive neutron stars or supramassive cold white dwarfs in binaries by exploring the optical time domain, thereby facilitating understanding of the supernovae explosion and metal-enrichment history in our Solar neighborhood., Comment: 35 pages, 8 figures, to be submitted

We present LAMOST~J041920.07+072545.4 (hereafter J0419), a close binary consisting of a bloated extremely low mass pre-white dwarf (pre-ELM WD) and a compact object with an orbital period of 0.607189~days. The large-amplitude ellipsoidal variations and the evident Balmer and He~I emission lines suggest a filled Roche lobe and ongoing mass transfer. No outburst events were detected in the 15 years of monitoring of J0419, indicating a very low mass transfer rate. The temperature of the pre-ELM, $T_\mathrm{eff} = 5793_{-133}^{+124}\,\rm K$, is cooler than the known ELMs, but hotter than most CV donors. Combining the mean density within the Roche lobe and the radius constrained from our SED fitting, we obtain the mass of the pre-ELM, $M_1 = 0.176\pm 0.014\,M_\odot$. The joint fitting of light and radial velocity curves yields an inclination angle of $i = 66.5_{-1.7}^{+1.4}$ degrees, corresponding to the compact object mass of $M_2 = 1.09\pm 0.05\,M_\odot$. The very bloated pre-ELM has a smaller surface gravity ($\log g = 3.9\pm 0.01$, $R_1 = 0.78 \pm 0.02\,R_\odot$) than the known ELMs or pre-ELMs. The temperature and the luminosity ($L_\mathrm{bol} = 0.62_{-0.10}^{+0.11}\,L_\odot$) of J0419 are close to the main sequence, which makes the selection of such systems through the HR diagram inefficient. Based on the evolutionary model, the relatively long period and small $\log g$ indicate that J0419 could be close to the "bifurcation period" in the orbit evolution, which makes J0419 to be a unique source to connect ELM/pre-ELM WD systems, wide binaries and cataclysmic variables., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures, ApJ, 933, 193

Optical time-domain surveys can unveil and characterize exciting but less-explored non-accreting and/or non-beaming neutron stars (NS) in binaries. Here we report the discovery of such a NS candidate using the LAMOST spectroscopic survey. The candidate, designated LAMOST J112306.9+400736 (hereafter J1123), is in a single-lined spectroscopic binary containing an optically visible M star. The star's large radial velocity variation and ellipsoidal variations indicate a relatively massive unseen companion. Utilizing follow-up spectroscopy from the Palomar 200-inch telescope and high-precision photometry from TESS, we measure a companion mass of $1.24_{-0.03}^{+0.03}~M_{\odot}$. Main-sequence stars with this mass are ruled out, leaving a NS or a massive white dwarf (WD). Although a massive WD cannot be ruled out, the lack of UV excess radiation from the companion supports the NS hypothesis. Deep radio observations with FAST yielded no detections of either pulsed or persistent emission. J1123 is not detected in numerous X-ray and gamma-ray surveys. These non-detections suggest that the NS candidate is not presently accreting and pulsing. Electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations indicate that there is dearth of compact objects with mass $\sim 2.5-5~{\rm M_\odot}$. This so-called "mass gap" may be linked to the supernova explosion mechanisms that produce neutron stars (NSs) and black holes (BHs). However, the existence of a few mass-gap compact objects, some of which have been confirmed to be BHs, poses a challenge to the traditional theory of black hole formation. In this work we investigate the possible formation channel of BHs from accretion-induced collapse (AIC) of NSs in X-ray binaries. In particular, we consider the influence of super-Eddington accretion of NSs. Recent observations of ultraluminous X-ray pulsars suggest that their apparent luminosities may reflect the true accretion luminosities of the accreting NSs, even exceeding the Eddington limit by a factor of $\gtrsim 100$. Thus, NSs accreting at a super-Eddington accretion rate may rapidly grow into BHs in intermediate/low-mass X-ray binaries. Based on the super-Eddington accretion disk models, we have investigated the evolution of NSs in intermediate/low-mass X-ray binaries by combining binary population synthesis and detailed stellar evolutionary calculations. We show that super-Eddington accretion plays a critical role in mass growth of NSs, and the final masses of the descendant BHs are heavily dependent on the NS magnetic fields, the metallicity of the donor star, and the bifurcation period of the binaries. AIC of NSs may account for some of the observed mass-gap BHs like GRO J0422+32. Recent gravitational wave observations showed that binary black hole (BBH) mergers with massive components are more likely to have high effective spins. In the model of isolated binary evolution, BH spins mainly originate from the angular momenta of the collapsing cores before BH formation. Both observations and theories indicate that BHs tend to possess relatively low spins, the origin of fast-spinning BHs remains a puzzle. We investigate an alternative process that stable Case A mass transfer may significantly increase BH spins during the evolution of massive BH binaries. The white dwarf (WD) + helium (He) star binary channel plays an important role in the single degenerate scenario for the progenitors of type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia). Previous studies on the WD + main sequence star evolution have shown that the magnetic fields of WDs may significantly influence their accretion and nuclear burning processes. In this work we focus on the evolution of magnetized WD + He star binaries with detailed stellar evolution and binary population synthesis (BPS) calculations. In the case of magnetized WDs, the magnetic fields may disrupt the inner regions of the accretion disk, funnel the accretion flow onto the polar caps, and even confine helium burning within the caps.We find that, for WDs with sufficiently strong magnetic fields, the parameter space of the potential SN Ia progenitor systems shrinks toward shorter orbital periods and lower donor masses compared with that in the non-magnetized WD case. The reason is that the magnetic confinement usually works with relatively high mass transfer rates, which can trigger strong wind mass loss from the WD, thus limiting the He-rich mass accumulation efficiency. The surviving companion stars are likely of low-mass at the moment of the SN explosions, which can be regarded as a possible explanation for the non-detection of surviving companions after the SNe or inside the SN remnants. However, the corresponding birthrate of Galactic SNe Ia in our high-magnetic models is estimated to be ~(0.08-0.13) * 10^{-3} yr^{-1}( ~0.17-0.28 * 10^{-3}yr^{-1} for the non-magnetic models), significantly lower than the observed Galactic SN Ia birthrate., Comment: 25 pages, 15 figures

Magnetars form a special population of neutron stars with strong magnetic fields and long spin periods. About 30 magnetars and magnetar candidates known currently are probably isolated. But the possibility that magnetars are in binaries hasn't been excluded. In this work, we perform spin evolution of neutron stars with different magnetic fields in wind-fed high-mass X-ray binaries and compare the spin period distribution with observations, aiming to find magnetars in binaries. Our simulation shows that some of the neutron stars, which have long spin periods or in wide-separation systems, need strong magnetic fields to explain their spin evolution. This implies that there are probably magnetars in high-mass X-ray binaries. Moreover, this can further provide a theoretical basis for some unclear astronomical phenomena, such as the possible origin of periodic fast radio bursts from magnetars in binary systems.

Neutron star X-ray binaries (NS XRBs) associated with supernova remnants (SNRs) are the youngest X-ray binaries that can provide insights into the early evolution of X-ray binaries and the formation properties of neutron stars. There are an increasing number of NS XRBs discovered to be harbored in SNRs in our and nearby galaxies. In this work, we perform binary population synthesis calculations to simulate the population of NS XRBs associated with SNRs for different types of companions, including Roche-lobe overfilling main-sequence stars, Be stars and supergiants. We estimate their birthrates and present the distributions of orbital parameters and companion mass for each type of companions. Our calculations show that the majority of them are Be X-ray binaries (BeXRBs) and that a few BeXRBs are expected to be associated with SNRs in a Milky Way-type galaxy., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Evolution of a large part of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) leads to the formation of rapidly rotating pulsars with a helium white dwarf (He WD) companion. Observations indicate that some He WDs in binary pulsar systems are ultracool (with the effective temperatures $T_{\rm eff}\lesssim$ 4000\, K). It is hard to cool down a He WD to such low temperatures within the Hubble time, because a thick hydrogen envelope was left behind around the He core after the mass transfer process. A possible mechanism that can accelerate the WD cooling is the evaporative wind mass loss from the He WD driven by the high-energy radiation from the recycled pulsar. In this paper, we evolve a large number of LMXBs and investigate the influence of the pulsar's high-energy radiation on the WD cooling with different input parameters, including the neutron star's spin-down luminosity, the evaporation efficiency and the metallicity of the companion star. By comparing our results with observations we note that, for relatively hot He WDs (with $T_{\rm eff}> 7000$ K), standard WD cooling without evaporation considered is able to reproduce their temperatures, while evaporation is probably required for the He WDs with relatively low temperatures ($T_{\rm eff}$ <5000 K)., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We perform a systematic study of merging black hole (BH) binaries with compact star (CS) companions, including black hole--white dwarf (BH--WD), black hole--neutron star (BH--NS) and black hole--black hole (BH--BH) systems. Previous studies have shown that mass transfer stability and common envelope evolution can significantly affect the formation of merging BH--CS binaries through isolated binary evolution. With detailed binary evolution simulations, we obtain easy-to-use criteria for the occurrence of the common envelope phase in mass-transferring BH binaries with a nondegenerate donor, and incorporate into population synthesis calculations. To explore the impact of possible mass gap between NSs and BHs on the properties of merging BH--CS binary population, we adopt different supernova mechanisms involving the \textit{rapid}, \textit{delayed} and \textit{stochastic} prescriptions to deal with the compact remnant masses and the natal kicks. Our calculations show that there are $ \sim 10^{5} -10^{6}$ BH--CS binaries in the Milky Way, among which dozens are observable by future space-based gravitational wave detectors. We estimate that the local merger rate density of all BH--CS systems is $ \sim 60-200 \,\rm Gpc^{-3}yr^{-1}$. While there are no low-mass BHs formed via \textit{rapid} supernovae, both \textit{delayed} and \textit{stochastic} prescriptions predict that $ \sim 100\% $/$ \sim 70\% $/$ \sim 30\% $ of merging BH--WD/BH--NS/BH--BH binaries are likely to have BH components within the mass gap., Comment: 21 pages, 12 figures, 1 table, submitted to ApJ after incorporating referee's comments

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious radio transients with millisecond durations. Recently, a periodic activity of $\sim$16 day and a possible periodicity of $\sim$159 day were detected to arise from FRB 180916.J0158+65 and FRB 121102, respectively, and the spin period of a slow-rotation magnetar was further considered to be one of possibilities to explain the periodic activities of repeating FRBs. For isolated neutron stars, the spin evolution suggests that it's difficult to reach several hours. In this work, we mainly focus on the possible maximum spin period of isolated NSs / magnetars dominated by an interaction between star's magnetic field and the disk. We find that the disk wind plays an important role in spin evolution, whose influence varies the power law index in the evolution equation of mass flow rate. For a magnetar without disk wind, the longest spin period is tens of hours. When the disk wind with a classical parameter is involved, the maximum spin period can reach hundreds of hours. But for a much extremely large index of mass flow rate due to disk wind or other angular momentum extraction processes, a spin period of $\sim$(16-160) days is still possible., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

So far quite a few ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars have been discovered. In this work, we construct a super-Eddington, magnetic accretion disk model to estimate the dipole magnetic field of eight ULX pulsars based on their observed spin-up variations and luminosities. We obtain two branches of dipole magnetic field solutions. They are distributed in the range of $B\sim (0.16-64.5)\times 10^{10}\,{\rm G}$ and $\sim (0.275-79.0)\times 10^{13}\,{\rm G}$ corresponding to the low- and high-$B$ solutions respectively. The low magnetic field solutions correspond to the state that the neutron stars are far away from the spin equilibrium, and the high magnetic field solutions are close to the spin equilibrium. The ultra-strong magnetic fields derived in Be-type ULX pulsars imply that the accretion mode in Be-type ULX pulsars could be more complicated than in the persistent ULX pulsars and may not be accounted for by the magnetized accretion disk model. We suggest that the transition between the accretor and the propeller regimes may be used to distinguish between the low- and high-$B$ magnetic field solutions in addition to the detection of the cyclotron resonance scattering features., Comment: 15 pages, 3 figures and 2 tables; Accepted for publication in RAA

Binary millisecond pulsars (MSPs) are believed to have descended from low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs), which have experienced substantial mass transfer and tidal circularization. Therefore, they should have very circular orbits. However, the discovery of several eccentric binary MSPs (with eccentricity $e\sim 0.01-0.1$) challenges this standard picture. Three models have been proposed thus far based on accretion-induced collapse of massive white dwarfs (WDs), neutron star-strange star transition, and formation of circumbinary disks. All of them are subject to various uncertainties, and are not entirely consistent with observations. Here we propose an alternative model taking into account the influence of thermonuclear flashes on proto-WDs. We assume that the flashes lead to asymmetrical mass ejection, which imparts a mild kick on the proto-WDs. By simulating orbital changes of binary MSPs with multiple shell flashes, we show that it is possible to reproduce the observed eccentricities, provided that the kick velocities are around a few kms$^{-1}$., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in ApJ

Magnetic braking (MB) likely plays a vital role in the evolution of low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). However, it is still uncertain about the physics of MB, and there are various proposed scenarios for MB in the literature. To examine and discriminate the efficiency of MB, we investigate the LMXB evolution with five proposed MB laws. Combining detailed binary evolution calculation with binary population synthesis, we obtain the expected properties of LMXBs and their descendants binary millisecond pulsars. We then discuss the strength and weakness of each MB law by comparing the calculated results with observations. LB-1 was originally suggested to harbour a very massive ($ \sim 70 M_\odot $) black hole, but was recently suggested to be a post-mass transfer binary containing a Be star and a helium (He) star. In this paper, we use the binary population synthesis method to simulate the potential population of the Be$ - $He binaries in the Milky Way. Mass transfer process during the progenitor binary evolution plays a vital role in determining the possible properties of the Be$ - $He binary population. By constructing a range of physical models with significantly different mass-transfer efficiencies, we obtain the predicted distributions at the current epoch of the component masses and the orbital periods for the Be$ - $He binaries. In particular, we show that, LB-1 very likely has evolved through non-conservative mass transfer if it is indeed a Be$ - $He system. We estimate that there are more than $ 10^{3} $ Be$ - $He binaries with V-band apparent magnitudes brighter than LB-1., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted by ApJ

Most astrophysical accretion disks are likely to be warped. In X-ray binaries the spin evolution of an accreting neutron star is critically dependent on the interaction between the neutron star magnetic field and the accretion disk. There have been extensive investigations on the accretion torque exerted by a coplanar disk that is magnetically threaded by the magnetic field lines from the neutron stars, but relevant works on warped/tilted accretion disks are still lacking. In this paper we develop a simplified two-component model, in which the disk is comprised of an inner coplanar part and an outer, tilted part. Based on standard assumption on the formation and evolution of the toroidal magnetic field component, we derive the dimensionless torque and show that a warped/titled disk is more likely to spin up the neutron star compared with a coplanar disk.We also discuss the possible influence of various initial parameters on the torque.

We present a systematic study of the X-ray binaries (XRBs) containing a black hole (BH) and a non-degenerate companion, in which mass transfer takes place via either capturing the companion's wind or Roche lobe overflow (RLO). As shown in our previous work that focusing on the formation and evolution of detached BH binaries, our assumed models relevant to BH's progenitors predicted significantly different binary properties \citep{sl19}. In this paper, we further follow the evolutionary paths of the BH systems that appearing as XRBs. By use of both binary population synthesis and detailed binary evolution calculations, we can obtain the potential population of BH XRBs. Distributions at the current epoch of various binary parameters have been computed. The observed sample of wind-fed XRBs can be well reproduced under assumption of all our models. The wind-fed XRBs are expected to be so rare ($ \lesssim 100 $) that only a couple of such systems have been detected. Comparison of known RLO XRBs with the calculated distributions of various binary parameters indicates that only the models assuming relatively small masses for BH progenitors can roughly match the observations. Accordingly we estimate that there are hundreds of RLO XRBs in the Milky Way, of which the majority are low-mass XRBs. The RLO systems may become ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) if the BH accretes at a very high rate, we expect that about a dozen ULXs with a BH accretor may exist in a Milky Way$-$like galaxy., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures, 2 tables, accepted by ApJ

SS433 is an extraordinary X-ray binary which is ejecting bipolar jets with $26\%$ of the speed of light. Associated with the supernova-like shell W50, SS433 is also probably one of the youngest X-ray binaries with an age of $\lesssim 10^5$ yr. However, the masses of the two components in SS433 and even the nature of the compact object are still under debate. In this work, assuming that the compact object is a black hole, we employ a binary population synthesis method to study the formation of SS433. We use previous estimates of the age of W50 and the duration of the jet activity to constrain the evolutionary history. Our calculations suggest that SS433 likely harboured a Hertzsprung gap star at the beginning of the current Roche-lobe overflow phase. The masses of the black hole and the optical/donor star in SS433 suggested by the simulations are around $8\ M_{\odot}$ and $24\ M_{\odot}$, respectively. Future measurement of the donor mass and radius can help infer not only the orgin of the binary but also the nature of the nebula W50., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

PSR J1640+2224 is a binary millisecond pulsar (BMSP) with a white dwarf (WD) companion. Recent observations indicate that the WD is very likely to be a $\sim 0.7\,M_{\odot}$ CO WD. Thus the BMSP should have evolved from an intermediate-mass X-ray binary (IMXB). However, previous investigations on IMXB evolution predict that the orbital periods of the resultant BMSPs are generally $<40$ days, in contrast with the 175 day orbital period of PSR J1640+2224. In this paper, we explore the influence of the mass of the neutron star (NS) and the chemical compositions of the companion star on the formation of BMSPs. Our results show that, the final orbital period becomes longer with increasing NS mass, and the WD mass becomes larger with decreasing metallicity. In this paper, we prove the concavity of the Renyi entropy power for nonlinear diffusion equation (NLDE) associated with the Laplacian and the Witten Laplacian on compact Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature or $CD(0,m)$-condition and on compact manifolds equipped with time dependent metrics and potentials. Our results can be regarded as natural extensions of a result due to Savar\'e and Toscani \cite{ST} on the concavity of the Renyi entropy for NLDE on Euclidean spaces. Moreover, we prove that the rigidity models for the Renyi entropy power are the Einstein or quasi-Einstein manifolds and a special $(K,m)$-Ricci flow with Hessian solitons. Inspired by Lu-Ni-Vazquez-Villani \cite{LNVV}, we prove the Aronson-Benilan estimates for NLDE on compact Riemannian manifolds with $CD(0,m)$-condition. We also prove the NIW formula which indicates an intrinsic relationship between the second order derivative of the Renyi entropy power $N_p$, the $p$-th Fisher information $I_p$ and the time derivative of the $W$-entropy associated with NLDE. Finally, we prove the entropy isoperimetric inequality for the Renyi entropy power and the Gagliardo-Nirenberg-Sobolev inequality on complete Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature or $CD(0, m)$-condition and maximal volume growth condition.

Let $L=\Delta-\nabla\phi\cdot \nabla$ be a symmetric diffusion operator with an invariant measure $\mu({\rm} d x)=e^{-\phi(x)}{\mathfrak m}({\rm d} x)$ on a complete non-compact smooth Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with its volume element ${\mathfrak m}={\rm vol}_g$, and $\phi\in C^2(M)$ a potential function. Some of these results were well-studied for $m$-Bakry-\'Emery Ricci curvature for $m\geq n$ (\!\!\cite{Lot,Qian,XDLi05, WeiWylie}) or $m=1$ (\!\!\cite{Wylie:WarpedSplitting, WylieYeroshkin}). When $m<1$, our results are new in the literature.

In 2015 October, the Be/X-ray binary 4U 0115+63 underwent a type II outburst, reaching an X-ray luminosity of $\sim$ {\DP{38}\es}. During the outburst, Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array ({\it NuSTAR}) performed two Target of Opportunity observations. Using the broad-band spectra from {\it NuSTAR} (3$-$79 keV), we have detected multiple cyclotron lines of the source, i.e., $\sim$ 12, 16, 22 and 33/35 keV. Obviously, the 16 keV line is not a harmonic component of the 12 keV line. As described by the phase-dependent equivalent widths of these cyclotron lines, the 16 keV and 12 keV lines are two different fundamental lines. In our work, we apply the two-poles cyclotron line model to the observation, i.e., the two line sets are formed at the same altitude ($\sim$ 0.2 km over the NS surface) of different magnetic poles, with $\sim$ {1.1\TDP{12}} and {1.4\TDP{12}} G in two poles, respectively., Comment: 22 pages, 7 figures, in a newest revised version, accepted by ApJ

According to the recycling model, neutron stars in low-mass X-ray binaries were spun up to millisecond pulsars (MSPs), which indicates that all MSPs in the Galactic plane ought to be harbored in binaries. However, about $20\%$ Galactic field MSPs are found to be solitary. To interpret this problem, we assume that the accreting neutron star in binaries may collapse and become a strange star when it reaches some critical mass limit. Mass loss and a weak kick induced by asymmetric collapse during the phase transition (PT) from neutron star to strange star can result in isolated MSPs. In this work, we use a population-synthesis code to examine the PT model. The simulated results show that a kick velocity of $\sim60~{\rm km~s}^{-1}$ can produce $\sim6\times10^3$ isolated MSPs and birth rate of $\sim6.6\times10^{-7} {\rm ~yr}^{-1}$ in the Galaxy, which is approximately in agreement with predictions from observations. Two accretion columns have been argued to form over the surface of a newborn millisecond magnetar for an extremely high accretion rate $\gtrsim1.8\times10^{-2}M_\odot\ {\rm s^{-1}}$ that may occur in the core-collapse of a massive star. In this paper, we investigate the characteristics of these accretion columns and their gravitational wave (GW) radiation. For a typical millisecond magnetar (surface magnetic field strength $B\sim10^{15}$ G and initial spin period $P\sim1$ ms), we find (1) its accretion columns are cooled via neutrinos and can reach a height $\sim1$ km over the stellar surface; (2) its column-induced characteristic GW strain is comparable to the sensitivities of the next generation ground-based GW detectors within a horizon $\sim1$ Mpc; (3) the magnetar can survive only a few tens of seconds; (4) during the survival timescale, the height of the accretion columns increases rapidly to the peak and subsequently decreases slowly; (5) the column mass, characteristic GW strain, and maximum GW luminosity have simultaneous peaks in a similar rise-fall evolution. In addition, we find that the magnetar's spin evolution is dominated by the column accretion torque.
