In this study, we introduce a theoretical model designed to explore both the photochemical and photothermal behavior of arc plasma radiation-induced ablation in gassing materials. We employ time-dependent density functional theory to analyze the photochemical behavior, while reactive force field molecular dynamics are used to explore the photothermal behavior. The phenomena, behavior and consequences of valence shell electronic excitation are analyzed in terms of ultraviolet (UV) absorption, electron-hole distribution, and Mayer bond order. Based on the photochemical findings, we apply a periodic electric field that corresponds to the vibration frequency of the permanent dipole moment to simulate infrared radiation, and convert UV photon energy into atomic kinetic energy to analyze UV radiation. This atomic-scale insight into photothermal behavior enables us to identify the final composition of ablation gases, including H2, CO, H2O, NH3, as well as specific cyanides, amines, and hydrocarbons. The results of the theoretical model and physical properties indicate that the concentration of hydrogen-containing gases in the ablation gas significantly affects the arc extinguishing capabilities of different polymers. Finally, we propose modification schemes suitable for polymers in power circuit breakers, considering UV absorption and smoke black production. Background: With social transformation, rapid economic development and deepening awareness of psychological health in China, people's demand for psychological health services is becoming increasingly urgent. A key challenge for Chinese medical organizations is to train enough qualified psychological care nurses. A greater understanding of psychological care competences (PCC) can help in clinical nurse selection, training, and assessment. Objective: To develop a PCC framework for Chinese nurses and obtain a consensus on the framework among experts. Methods: A descriptive mixed methods study was designed consisting of a literature review and semi-structured interviews followed by three Delphi rounds. The experts (n = 16) involved were nurses, nursing managers and educators from nine Chinese provinces with a specific interest in psychological care. Descriptive statistics assisted in data analysis. Results: Using the Iceberg Model as a theoretical foundation, five main dimensions and associated subdomains were integrated from 39 chosen articles. The semi-structured interviews with 24 nursing managers and nurses confirmed all of the themes from the literature review while generating new themes, both of which were incorporated into the initial PCC framework. After three Delphi rounds, the experts reached consensus on the PCC framework, including five domains (knowledge, skills, professional ethics, personal traits, internal motivations) and 22 subdomains with connotations. The response rate (RR) values for the three rounds of consultation were 80.00%, 87.50% and 92.86%, the composite reliability (Cr) values were 0.89–0.90, and the Kendall coordination coefficients were 0.155-0.200 (P < 0.05). Conclusions: On the basis of the Iceberg Model, literature review and qualitative research methods along with Delphi technique were used to develop a scientific and systematic PCC framework. The research methods were feasible and the results were reliable, thereby providing a basis for adopting this framework into nursing education. The dielectric breakdown properties of SF6-CF4 mixtures were investigated at different ratios of SF6, 0.01-1.6 MPa, and gas temperatures up to 3000 K. Initially, the equilibrium compositions of SF6-CF4 mixtures were calculated by minimizing the Gibbs free energy under the assumptions of local thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium. Then the electron energy distribution function was obtained based on those data by solving the Boltzmann equation under the zero-dimensional two-term spherical harmonic approximation. Finally, the critical reduced electric field strength (E/N)cr of SF6-CF4 mixtures, which is defined as the value for which total ionization reaction is equal to total attachment reaction, were determined and analyzed. The results confirm the superior breakdown properties of pure SF6 at relatively low gas temperatures. However, for higher gas temperatures (i.e., T > 2200 K at 0.4 MPa), the (E/N)cr in SF6-CF4 mixtures are obviously higher than that in pure SF6 and the values of (E/N)cr increase with the reduction of the ratio of SF6. Laser produced copper plasmas of different spot sizes in air were investigated using fast photography and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The laser energy was 33 mJ. There were dramatic changes in the plasma plume expansion into the ambient air when spot sizes changed from ∼0.1 mm to ∼0.6 mm. A stream-like structure and a hemispherical structure were, respectively, observed. It appeared that the same spot size resulted in similar expansion dynamics no matter whether the target was located in the front of or behind the focal point, although laser-induced air breakdown sometimes occurred in the latter case. Plasma plume front positions agree well with the classic blast wave model for the large spot-size cases, while an unexpected stagnation of ∼80 ns occurred after the laser pulse ends for the small spot size cases. This stagnation can be understood in terms of the evolution of enhanced plasma shielding effects near the plasma front. Axial distributions of plasma components by OES revealed a good confinement effect. The equilibrium compositions of different SF6-N2 mixtures at several gas pressures and temperatures up to 3000 K were first calculated by minimizing the Gibbs free energy under the assumptions of local thermodynamic and chemical equilibrium. The electron energy distribution function was then obtained using the composition data by Boltzmann equation analysis. It was found that adding N2 to SF6 gas can markedly reduce the kinetic energy of electrons at relatively high gas temperatures, which enhances the dielectric field strength. Finally, the critical reduced electric field (E/N)cr, defined as the value for which ionization is equal to attachment, of hot SF6-N2 mixtures was determined. The results indicate that in the gas temperature range around 2000-3000 K, increasing the concentration of N2 effectively enhances the (E/N)cr of SF6-N2 mixtures, and the (E/N)cr of SF6-N2 mixtures at a wide range of concentrations of N2 (5%, 50%, and 95%) are all higher than that of pure SF6 gas. The development of electrothermal chemical launch technology and the effective ignition of energetic thermoplastic elastomer (ETPE) propellants all call for a thorough understanding of the plasma propellant interaction mechanism. Therefore in this work, a numerical model is developed to study this process. In this model, special attention is paid to deal with the regression of propellant surface, which is caused by plasma ablation, and is assumed to have considerable influence on the interaction process. By this model, interaction features of four propellants, including two ETPE propellants are studied with the aid of experiments, which are carried out to obtain plasma parameters utilized in the model. Surface temperature, ablation rate, and surface regression rate are obtained for different propellants under plasma impingement. The wall material and the electrode material together determine the composition of the capillary discharge plasma. In this paper, an improved ablation model considering polyethylene (PE) and copper ablation and deposition was developed. Generators with different geometric sizes were calculated and tested. The results show that the concentration distributions of copper and PE in the generator were the pair-wise opposite, and the aspect ratio (AR) had a threshold (AR = 8.67). The copper mass density distribution varied from uniform to inhomogeneous with the increase in AR, which was similar to that of its concentration distribution. The maximum copper mass density increased with the increase in AR, and the AR threshold was also 8.67. The relationship between the copper or PE ablated mass and capillary length or diameter approximately followed a power law, and the relationship between the copper or PE ablated mass and AR approximately followed a proportional law. The PE mass density distribution was not similar to that of its concentration for AR ≥ 8.67. The PE ablated mass increased with the increase in AR, and its variation was similar to that of the maximum PE mass density. When the AR(AR > 5.2) was large enough, the PE mass density distribution determined the total mass density distribution. Otherwise, the total mass density distribution was determined by the mass density distribution of PE and copper. Overall, the simulation results were in good agreement with the experiments. The C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 gas mixture has attracted much attention due to its excellent insulation property and eco-friendly character. In order to evaluate the feasibility of its application in DC GIL, this paper focuses on the surface charging characteristics of spacers under DC stress in the C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixture. First, the DC insulation strength was tested under uniform field. The results show that the critical dielectric strength of pure C 4 F 7 N is more than twice that of SF 6 and the dielectric strength of 15%∼20% C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixture is equivalent to that of SF 6. Next, the surface charge measurement of spacers was performed in C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixtures, which reveals that the surface charge density decreases slightly with the increase of C 4 F 7 N content. However, the surface charging level in 25% C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixture is still much higher than that in SF 6. It is found that most of the surface charge stems from partial discharges (PDs) near the flange. The PD measurement shows that in SF 6 , there are more PDs with low magnitude, but much less PDs with high magnitude compared to that in the 15%∼25% C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixtures. It is the different PD behaviors between C 4 F 7 N/CO 2 mixtures and SF 6 that lead to their different surface charging characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new approach has been presented herein to prepare nano titanium carbide based on the underwater electrical explosion approach. Scanning electron microscopy and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to investigate the morphology and composition of the electrical explosion products. A numerical model was established to investigate the nanoparticle formation process. The results show that the average diameter of the formed nanoparticles was ∼60 nm and approximately conformed to a lognormal distribution. Compared with the nanoparticles prepared by electrical explosion in gas, the nanoparticles prepared by the underwater electrical explosion had a smaller size distribution range and better sphericity. During the formation process of nanoparticles, the distribution of nanoparticles formed in a narrow temperature range near the specific temperature directly determined the characteristics of the final electrical explosion products. The specific temperature was ∼3400 K, which was also the specific temperature of the saturation ratio, the nucleation rate, the average diameter of the formed nuclei, the number of monomers, and the number of the formed nanoparticles. The diameters of nanoparticles obtained in the experiment were mainly concentrated between 50 and 70 nm, and the calculated diameters of the nanoparticles were mainly concentrated between 55 and 65 nm; therefore, the data obtained through the model were consistent with the experimental ones. These provide a way to synthesize the nano titanium carbide and a method to estimate their size and distribution, and it is hoped for understanding the evolution of the titanium wire underwater electrical explosion and the formation of nanoparticles. A two-dimensional magneto-hydrodynamic (MHD) model of an ablation-dominated capillary discharge is developed. Special attention is paid to the interaction between the plasma and the capillary in two-dimensional geometry. The mass exchange process is taken into account by adopting a kinetic ablation model and a revised deposition model. The momentum and energy exchange processes associated with the ablated and deposited mass are also considered. By solving this model, key plasma parameters are calculated and presented in the paper. It is shown that distinct two-dimensional features exist in the distribution of these plasma parameters. • In grid-connected PV systems, the synthetic current signal is seriously affected by extra multicomponent noises. • Due to the noise signal synthesis influence, the existing Db9-based features would become invalid. • The established Rbio3.1-based features directly focus on the arc fault instead of synthetic signal. • The proposed protection strategy could adapt to different PV systems even without adjusting parameters. • The proposed protection strategy could achieve the effective arc fault detection. The arc fault protection strategy should be applied in grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems to guarantee the human and equipment safety. In this paper, PV series arc faults are conducted in different grid-connected PV systems through the designed experimental platform firstly. Having analyzed these synthetic arc fault current signals through the existing Db9-based features used in the resistive system, the amplitude is found no longer increasing during the arc fault period in some frequency bands. Inverters would inject extra multicomponent noises to influence electrical characterization of arc faults in grid-connected PV systems, causing that Db9-based features show undesirable constant even decreasing amplitude patterns. Next, the Rbio3.1-based features have the better symmetric property to achieve the singularity detection of arc faults. The biorthogonality property of Rbio3.1 could further improve the reconstruction accuracy cooperating with the symmetric property. Besides, its higher vanishing moment is able to display the arc salient disturbances more clearly. Then the Rbio3.1 is able to give more arc fault occurrence time discovery pulses and better arc fault separation degree for different switching frequencies, inverter types, and inverter stages. Ideally, its feature improvement ability may not appear under fault-like conditions. Finally, the random forest (RF) outputs the final state recognition result through combining multiple classifications without adjusting parameters. For the desired Rbio3.1-based features, different feature combinations are able to significantly improve the detection accuracy at the acceptable speed for complicated interference scenes in multiple grid-connected PV systems based on the MATLAB platform. Microparticles from electrode erosion would lead field distortion, microdischarge, or impact damage, which are convinced to be mainly responsible for degradation of insulation performance in switches. To investigate the splashing characteristics of microparticles from electrode erosion, this paper performs the discharge experiments between two cylinder electrodes, made of copper, molybdenum, or tungsten-copper. A statistical method based on laser confocal microscopy is introduced to visualize the distribution of microparticles on the electrode surface. Experimental results indicate that the number of microparticles increases and the acceleration tendency gets mild as the discharge shots accumulate. The Cu surface would lead more production of the $> 2~\mu \text{m}$ microparticles than other two materials after hundreds of shots, which would provide an explanation for its relative poor reliability and insulation performance. The electrode surface has formed two distinct zones for distribution of these microparticles: inner zone and outer zone after hundreds of discharge shots. Estimation of inner zone radius and splashing angles of microparticles indicates that the larger the microparticles are, the smaller the angle they would be splashed out with. Finally, the evolution of arc column in the first quarter discharge cycle is captured by a high-speed camera and its relation with the concentration of microparticles is discussed. C5-PFK has attracted much attention as one of the most promising SF 6 substitutes for medium voltage (MV) power equipment because of its high insulation strength and low global warming potential (GWP). In this paper, the dielectric properties of C5-PFK-Air and C5-PFK-CO 2 mixtures are experimentally investigated, to explore the most effective solution for C5-PFK mixtures for application in MV power equipment. The basic physical properties of C5-PFK and its mixtures are calculated and compared with those of C4-PFN based gases and SF 6 -N 2 mixtures. The GWP and saturated vapor pressure for gas mixtures are calculated, and a relative value R-GWP is defined to evaluate the greenhouse effect at specific pressure. The 50% breakdown voltages of C5-PFK-Air and C5-PFK-CO 2 mixtures under lightning impulse voltage are determined experimentally. The mixture ratio and filling pressure are determined taking into account of the ambient temperature and pressure for MV apparatus. The possibility of practical applications for these mixtures are analyzed by combining the saturated vapor pressure characteristics and the breakdown electric field strength. The synergy effects of the C5-PFK-CO 2 and SF 6 -N 2 mixtures are greater than those of the C5-PFK-Air and C4-PFN-CO 2 mixtures. The C5-PFK-Air and C5-PFK-CO 2 mixtures have higher dielectric strength than SF 6 at 0.1 MPa when the C5-PFK is about 28% under the temperature limitation of −5°C. The pressure increments of 0.014 and 0.066 MPa are required for C5-PFK-CO 2 and C5-PFK-Air mixtures, respectively to reach the dielectric strength of pure SF 6 at 0.1 MPa under the temperature limitation of − 25°C. The discharge plasma channel (DPC) evolution process is observed by taking time-series self-emission intensified charge-coupled device (iCCD) photos and simultaneous shadow images. By adding neutral density filters before iCCD, the subtle structure of the DPC self-emission is observed. It is interesting that a treelike structure is observed soon after the voltage breakdown. Long exposure time photos demonstrate that this structure existed for hundreds of nanoseconds. An inner homogeneously luminous column arises latterly, forming a two-layer self-emission structure. Then, this column gradually occupies the whole DPC. Shadow images show that the expanding DPC maintains good axial uniformity, manifesting the long-standing uneven treelike structure only has limited impact on the energy distribution and the expansion process. The calculated expansion rate reaches its maximum value (4.75 km/s) not at the power peak, but 0.24 $\mu \text{s}$ after that. Then, the expansion rate undergoes fast drop and slow decline. The capillary geometry of discharge plasma sources determines the performance of capillary plasma generators. In this research, 16 types of generators with different geometric sizes and aspect ratios (the length divided by the diameter of the capillary, ranging from 0.67 to 22) were designed. Plasma parameters, including the temperature, static pressure, and velocity, were calculated and analyzed. The results show that the maximum temperature of the plasma decreased with increasing capillary aspect ratios. However, there was a difference between the temperature distributions above and below an aspect ratio threshold of 8.67. The simulations suggest that the aspect ratio threshold of the static pressure for generating shock waves is 15.33. For aspect ratios lower than this value, the maximum static pressure increased with increases in the aspect ratio. Otherwise, a shock wave would be generated, and the distribution of the static pressure would be consistent with distribution 2 (with a shock wave near the nozzle). The maximum velocity decreased as the capillary aspect ratios increased, with a threshold of 8.67. Since the plasma parameters were exponential functions of the aspect ratios, distribution and variation trends of the plasma parameters for different aspect ratios are proposed. Perfluoronitriles (PFN) and their mixtures have garnered much attention as a great potential SF6-substitute gas, owing to their excellent dielectric strengths and minimal impacts on the environment. The dielectric properties of C4-PFN/CO2 and SF6/N2 mixtures are investigated and compared by experiments and calculations, with taking into account the limitations of saturated vapor pressure on the mixed ratio at certain ambient temperatures. The saturated vapor pressures of these two mixtures are determined by combining the Antoine Equation and the basic law of vapor liquid equilibrium. Then, the 50% breakdown voltages V50% of the C4-PFN/CO2 and SF6/N2 mixtures are determined by tests with up-and-down method, and the values of E/p are deduced. Finally, the dielectric properties of these two mixtures are analyzed by combining the saturated vapor pressure characteristics and the breakdown electric field strengths. The results show that a proper choice of the mixed ratio and gas pressure of the C4-PFN/CO2 mixture can provide a stronger DS than the SF6/N2 mixture and pure SF6. Electrical explosion of wires has caused the attention of researchers because of its rich physical phenomena and plenty applications. Microsecond electrical explosion of Cu wires in air under various parameters is conducted, and diverse discharge waveforms are displayed and analyzed. By statistically summarizing the experimental results, experimental parameter selection suggestions for specific applications are given. In addition, the experimental results show that the average axial breakdown field strength is greatly changed with the breakdown time. It drops linearly from ~13 to ~3 kV/cm when breakdown time varies from 2 to $6~\mu \text{s}$ , it keeps at a relatively low value about 1 kV/cm when the breakdown occurred after $8~\mu \text{s}$. The effect of current density on the rising edge of the resistivity curve is confirmed by the experimental results. Based on the correlation between the breakdown time and breakdown field strength and the correlation between the maximum current density and specific action when resistivity reaches 200 $\mu \Omega \cdot \text {cm}$ , the specific-action model is improved empirically. Short-time withstanding current is a key parameter of air circuit breakers. Due to the structure of multiple parallel contacts, the outer movable conductors tilt and slide seriously when withstanding the large short-circuit current. This paper is aimed to investigate the contact behavior of the tilted contact. A new designed experimental setup to measure the minimum repulsion current and the contact resistance of the tilted contact is developed. Contact force and tilt angle can also be measured and adjusted. Based on the measured results and the impression marks of the tilted contact, it is concluded that the repulsion force and the contact resistance are increased seriously when the contact is tilted. During the contact tilting process, the contact type is changed from the line contact to the point contact and the contact center is offset to the edge of the movable contact. In addition, with the help of contact bridge model, it is also found that the contact type transition plays a dominant role on the increase of the repulsion force and contact resistance. Paralleled high-voltage SF6 circuit breakers with a highly coupled split reactor (HCSR) could realize the function of automatic current-sharing and current-limiting. Aiming at investigating the arc characteristics of paralleled SF6 circuit breakers with an HCSR, the single-phase tests for the paralleled high-voltage SF6 circuit breakers with an HCSR were carried out, including the opening and closing–opening operations. The influence of the capacitor paralleled to one of the breaks was studied. A mathematical model was developed for the paralleled high-voltage SF6 circuit breakers with an HCSR by coupling the equivalent circuit equations into the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) arc model through the embedded codes, laying the foundation for the further research. The variation of the short-circuit currents in the branches during the breaking process was analyzed in detail. The current-sharing and current-limiting effects are quite satisfying. The distributed transmit beamforming has recently been discussed as an energy-effective technique in wireless communication systems. A common ground of various techniques is that the destination node transmits a beacon signal or feedback to assist source nodes to synchronize signals. However, this approach is not appropriate for a radar system since the destination is a non-cooperative target of an unknown location. In our paper, we propose a novel synchronization strategy for a distributed multiple-element beamfoming radar system. Source nodes estimate parameters of beacon signals transmitted from others to get their local synchronization information. The channel information of the phase propagation delay is transmitted to nodes via the reflected beacon signals as well. Next, each node generates appropriate parameters to form a beamforming signal at the target. Transmit beamforming signals of all nodes will combine coherently at the target compensating for different propagation delay. We analyse the influence of the local oscillation accuracy and the parameter estimation errors on the performance of the proposed synchronization scheme. The results of numerical simulations illustrate that this synchronization scheme is effective to enable the transmit beamforming in a distributed multi-element radar system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acheulian tools with their associated level of cognizance heralded a major threshold in the evolution of hominin technology, culture and behavior. Thus, unraveling occurrence ages of Acheulian technology across different regions worldwide constitutes a key aspect of understanding the archeology of early human evolution. Here we present a magneto-cyclochronology for the Acheulian assemblage from Sanmenxia Basin, Loess Plateau, North China. Our results place a sequence of stable normal and reversed paleomagnetic polarities within a regional lithostratigraphic context. The Acheulian assemblage is dated to be older than the Matuyama–Brunhes boundary at 0.78 Ma, and is found in strata that are probably equivalent to a weak paleosol subunit within loess layer L 9 in the Chinese loess-paleosol sequence, which corresponds to marine isotope stage (MIS) 23, a relatively subdued interglacial period with age range of ∼0.89–0.92 Ma. This age of ∼0.9 Ma implies that Acheulian stone tools were unambiguously present in North China during the Early Pleistocene. It distinctly enlarges the geographic distribution of Acheulian technology and brings its occurrence in North China back into the Early Pleistocene, which is contemporaneous with its first emergence in Europe. Combined with other archeological records, the larger area over which Acheulian technology existed in East Asia during the terminal Early Pleistocene has important implications for understanding early human occupation of North China. CO2 attracts a lot of attention of researchers as a possible substitute for SF6. The arc interruption capabilities of SF6-CO2 mixtures for different mixed ratios are investigated in this paper by carrying out tests with a 126 kV puffer gas circuit breaker prototype and calculations. Based on the measured arc voltage and current around current zero, the post-arc current characteristics and the thermal interruption properties are investigated for SF6-CO2 mixtures under different rise rate of the recovery voltage RRRV and di/dt before current zero. It is found that the interruption performance of SF6-CO2 increases greatly with increasing SF6 concentration, and the critical RRRV and di/dt before current zero of SF6-CO2 mixtures for SF6 content of 0, 20 and 50% are about 39, 45 and 70% of that of SF6 respectively, at the short-circuit current of 10 kA. The pressure increment at current zero is found to have a great effect on the interruption of the short-circuit current. Underwater pulsed spark discharge has been widely used in industrial fields as a source of shock waves or acoustic waves, and numerical modeling of the discharge and pressure wave characteristics is necessary to improve the application performance. In this paper, a numerical model is proposed that couples the circuit equation, the mass and energy conservation equations, and a momentum conservation equation based on the Rankine–Hugoniot conditions. A tabulated wide range equation of state and conductivity data of water are used, and various physical processes during the plasma channel expansion are considered, including the energy flow and mass exchange between the channel and the surrounding water due to thermal radiation, evaporation, and condensation. The model self-consistently solves the circuit current and voltage, the plasma channel parameters including composition, temperature, conductivity, pressure, etc., and the pressure profile at a certain distance from the discharge channel. The calculated results show good consistency with the experimental measurements, and three sets of experimental results from other literature are tested to further verify the applicability and effectiveness of the model. A 2-D time-dependent magnetohydrodynamic model of an ablation-dominated capillary is developed. The capillary discharge test is carried out to verify the validity of the numerical model. Special attention is paid to the radial distribution of the capillary discharge plasma characteristics. In addition, the factors that influence the radial distribution are investigated. Then, the competition of the ablation and deposition process with time in the capillary discharge is discussed. The results show that radial distributions of plasma characteristics are significant and influenced by the ablation rate. Three stages of the capillary discharge are observed, and the shorter rise time of the charging current would lead to a more uniform radial distribution of plasma temperature. Recently, fluoronitrile C4F7N is regarded as a promising alternative gas for SF6, and its global warming potential (GWP) is extremely high. C4F7N has good insulation properties and a relatively low GWP, so it can be used as an insulation medium for gas-insulated switchgears. Some studies have been conducted on the decomposition pathway of C4F7N gas that may produce possible neutral molecules and free radicals, which helps understand the thermal decomposition of C4F7N. However, anions and cations will be produced under discharge conditions. In these cases, the decomposition pathway of C4F7N will be different. In this paper, the ionization decomposition pathway and the attachment decomposition pathway of C4F7N were first calculated, while the recombination processes of the cations and anions were also considered. The results can reveal the decomposition mechanism of C4F7N and the recombination mechanism of the stable products under discharge conditions. The energy changes of all the reactions were calculated, which reveals the difficulty of chemical reactions. To better investigate the formation mechanism of stable products, the partial discharge experiment was also carried out, and the decomposition products of C4F7N mixed gas were detected. Finally, the ionization energy and electron affinity energy of the stable products were also calculated, which can determine the difference in the total electronic energy between the neutral molecule and the ion. This study was designed to evaluate how the absence of P-glycoprotein (Pgp, Mdr1a), breast cancer-resistance protein (Bcrp, Abcg2) or both affects drug distribution into sciatic nerves, brain and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in rats. 2. Pgp substrate (loperamide), BCRP substrates (dantrolene and proprietary compound X) and dual substrates (imatinib and proprietary compound Y) were well distributed into sciatic nerves with comparable nerve to plasma concentration ratios between wild-type and knockout (KO) rats. 3. Brain exposure increased substantially in Mdr1a( −/−) rats for loperamide and in Mdr1a( −/−) /Abcg2( −/−) rats for imatinib and compound Y, but minimally to modestly in Abcg2( −/−) rats for dantrolene and compound X. The deletion of Mdr1a or Abcg2 alone had little effect on brain distribution of compound Y. 4. While CSF to unbound brain concentration ratio remained ≥3 in the KO animals for dantrolene, compounds X and Y, it was reduced to 1 in the Mdr1a( −/−) /Abcg2( −/−) rats for imatinib. 5. The data indicate that Pgp and Bcrp do not play significant roles in drug distribution into peripheral nerve tissues in rats, while working in concert to regulate brain penetration. Studies of circuit breakers are of interest to high voltage direct current (HVDC) power system. The method for investigation of the switching arc characteristics of a 500 kV metallic return transfer breaker (MRTB) is presented in this paper, by coupling magneto-hydro-dynamics (MHD) arc model with the resonant circuit equations. 2-D MHD arc model taking account of important physical processes of mass flow, Ohmic heating, radiation energy transfer, momentum exchange, Lorentz force and current flow is developed, and then the influence of stray resistor is analyzed under the interrupting current of DC 4 kA. Calculation results of the distribution of temperature and gas pressure in the nozzle region are presented, where the shock wave and negative voltage-current characteristic of arc are discussed. The interruption process of the new-type selective miniature circuit breaker (SMCB) is different from the traditional low-voltage circuit breaker (LVCB). According to the operating principle of the SMCB, its interruption process can be divided into three stages; the corresponding mathematical model and calculation method are proposed as well. The calculation of the static characteristic of the magnetic release equipped with the permanent magnet shows that the influence of the current direction on the electromagnetic force cannot be ignored, which lead to the minimum tripping current of the release is equal to −315 and 490 A, respectively, when the armature is close to the permanent magnet. With the simulation and experimental results when the effective value of the prospective short-circuit current is 644 A and 1.5 kA, it indicates that the bigger the closing phase angle is, the quicker the arc ignition between the main contacts and the less arcing time will be. Moreover, the typical interruption parameters of the simulation and experimental results are comparable, and it demonstrates that the proposed method can be used for the optimization design of the SMCB. Nanosecond laser produced brass plasmas are studied at the ambient pressures of 10−3, 20, 100 and 500 Pa. Spatial and temporal dynamics of the plasmas are captured by fast photography and optical emission spectroscopy (OES). The phenomena of plasma free expansion, splitting, sharpening, and instability are observed, respectively. At different pressures and incident laser fluences, the plasma lengths are found to be in good agreement with the drag force model, and the plasma stopping distance are interpreted with the Dyer's model. By spatially resolved OES, we confirm that the excited target ions (Zn+, and Cu+) play a growing important role on the emission near plasma front with the increase of the ambient pressure. It also demonstrates that at the late time of 300 ns, there is no significant variation in the temperature distribution on axis in the explored ambient pressure range, while the electron density decreases rapidly in the near-surface region. A 3-D transient finite-element method to analyze the short-time withstand current for an air circuit breaker (ACB) is presented. The cylindrical contact bridge is adopted to describe the current constriction between the movable and fixed contacts, and then considering the influence of the eddy current, the resistivity and thermal conductivity variations with the temperature, and the coupled calculation of the corresponding electromagnetic field and thermal field can be performed to evaluate the short-time withstand current capability. To verify the calculation method and results based on the ACB model, relevant experiments are also conducted through measuring the temperature of two points on the contacts with the thermocouple. A study was carried out on the characteristics of the dielectric strength of gaseous working medium in a puffer circuit breaker following current interruption. A reduced critical electric field strength (E/N)cr was defined. Its value for SF6 gas within the temperature range of 300 to 3000 K and pressure range of 1 to 32 atm was obtained by solving the Boltzmann equation with most recent atomic data, which allows the determination of the critical electric field strength Ecr at different temperature and pressure. The dielectric behavioral pattern of the breaker was then characterized by applying the Ecr data to the temperature and pressure fields obtained by a 2-D magneto-hydro- dynamics model encompassing all important mechanisms operating in the arcing process. The Ecr distribution at 80 and 110 \mus after current zero was then compared to the electric-field distribution to arrive at important information regarding the weakest point or regions in the design. Plasma ignition mechanisms have always been the central issue in the electrothermal–chemical (ETC) launch technology. Generally, there are two types of ignition schemes, namely, the axial discharge scheme and the radial discharge scheme, and the two schemes are supposed to have different ignition characteristics. This work is devoted to study the features of different plasma ignition schemes in the ETC launch devices. A capillary discharge setup and a gap discharge setup are utilized in the experiments to represent the axial and radial discharge ignition schemes, respectively, and three types of propellants are used in the study. Using the measured data in the experiments, plasma heat fluxes are solved by a plasma–propellant interaction model. In addition, the propellant surface conditions are investigated by a scanning electron microscope after the plasma ignition experiments. The surface conditions of propellants in different ignition schemes display distinct features, which are analyzed to shed light on the characteristics of different ignition schemes and the responses of different propellants. Results are supposed to help in interpreting the plasma–propellant interaction mechanisms in different ignition schemes and provide references for the optimization design of plasma ignition installations in the ETC launch devices. Reduced critical electric field strength (E/N)cr is an important indicator for the evaluation of dielectric breakdown of SF6 and its mixtures. This paper aims to analytically investigate the dielectric breakdown properties of SF6-N2 mixtures. First, (ɑ-η)/N and (E/N)cr of SF6-N2 mixtures at room temperature, and then (E/N)cr of hot SF6 at several pressures are calculated and compared with other studies. The results confirmed the validity of the present calculation method and parameters. In addition, the electron energy distribution function, reduced ionization coefficient ɑ/N and attachment coefficient η/N of SF6-N2 mixtures are obtained at different proportions and under 1 atm in the gas temperature range 300-3000 K. Then (E/N)cr can be determined when the effective ionization coefficient (ɑ-η)/N = 0. The results show that in a certain temperature range, due to the effect of N2 on reduction in the proportion of high-energy electrons, (E/N)cr of SF6-N2 mixtures will be enhanced by increasing N2. Abstract: We present a computationally-efficient method for obtaining the fully spun-up state of a seasonally-varying global ocean biogeochemistry model. The solver uses a Newton–Krylov method to find the fixed points of the map that assigns to an initial state the value of the model state at the end of a one-year run. Apart from the preconditioner, which we describe in the paper, the method relies on a black-box public-domain Newton–Krylov solver that does not require the explicit construction of the model’s Jacobian matrix. Applied to the PO4 plus dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) cycle of an Ocean Carbon Model Intercomparison Project II (OCMIP-2) type model, the solver is more than two orders of magnitude faster than the traditional time-stepping method for spinning up the model. The efficiency of the solver is illustrated by using the seasonally varying globally-gridded PO4 climatology to objectively optimize the parameters that control the mean lifetime of semi-labile DOP and the fraction of new production allocated to DOP. The optimization study demonstrates that the information in the seasonal variations of do not provide a significantly stronger constraint than the annually averaged data used in previous optimization studies. Abstract: An adjoint data assimilation approach was used to quantify the physical and biological controls on Calanus finmarchicus N3–C6 stages on Georges Bank and its nearby environs. The mean seasonal cycle of vertically averaged distributions, from 5 years of the GLOBEC Georges Bank Broad-Scale Surveys between January and June, was assimilated into a physical–biological model based on the climatological circulation. Large seasonal and spatial variability is present in the inferred supply sources, mortality rates, computed molting fluxes, and physical transports. Estimated mortalities fall within the range of observed rates, and exhibit stage structure that is consistent with earlier findings. Inferred off-bank initial conditions indicate that the deep basins in the Gulf of Maine are source regions of early stage nauplii and late-stage copepodids in January. However, the population increase on Georges Bank from January to April is controlled mostly by local biological processes. Magnitudes of the physical transport terms are nearly as large as the mortality and molting fluxes, but their bank-wide averages are small in comparison to the biological terms. The hypothesis of local biological control is tested in a sensitivity experiment in which upstream sources are set to zero. In that solution, the lack of upstream sources is compensated by a decrease in mortality that is much smaller than the uncertainty in observational estimates. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The x-ray spectrum of a flash radiography source based on wire-shorted rod-pinch diode (RPD) is measured by an absorption spectrometer and calculated by the Geant4 Monte-Carlo code. The RPD is driven by a two-stage linear transformer driver (charging voltage ±45 kV per stage), which delivers ∼300 kA current within ∼200 ns on a short-circuit inductive load (∼30 nH). The spectrometer consists of LiF thermoluminescence dosimeters and metal filters of different materials and thicknesses, and the spectrum is reconstructed based on the Geant4 simulated dosimeter responses to various photon energies through different filters. The measured spectrum reaches an endpoint photon energy of ∼130 keV. The radiation characteristics of the RPD in the experiment are also modeled in Geant4 using measured voltage and current waveforms, and the results show an overestimation in photon number and endpoint energy (∼147 keV) compared to the measured spectrum, which indicates that during the bremsstrahlung process, the effective electron current is ∼27% of the total current, and the effective voltage is ∼12% lower than the directly reconstructed resistive voltage. A rough agreement is found between the spectra results and the non-relativistic Bethe–Heitler model with Sommerfeld correction; therefore, the analytic result can serve as an initial guess for spectrum reconstruction methods such as the perturbation method. Measurement of plasma parameters during the ablation phase in the Z-pinch is crucial for investigating the dynamic behaviors. In this study, optical Thomson scattering was employed to measure the temperature and velocity of the ablation plasma in a double-wire Z-pinch. The scattering spectra profiles were fitted using a model that considered the velocity distribution. The experimental results revealed the energy evolution of ablation plasma, the establishment of the global magnetic field and the development of axial non-uniformities. The precursor plasma was found to play a key role in strengthening the global magnetic field. A resistive layer near the wire core with a size of 1.5 mm was observed in the ablation plasma after the precursor plasma column formed. The plasma underwent rapid heating in this layer, the electron temperature rises from 17 eV to 22 eV. Upon leaving this layer, electron the temperature is stable at around 22 eV. The radial distribution of the ablation rate increases and decreases, indicating the axial motion of the ablation plasma, which could be caused by the tilt motion of the stream and the secondary modulation of the natural wavelength. The synergy enhancement of magnetic-spatial confinement using a bar magnet pair was applied to fiber-optic laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (FO-LIBS). By studying the plasma morphology and emission spectroscopy, the plasma temporal behaviors under free expansion, spatial confinement, and magnetic-spatial confinement have been carefully compared. Temperature distribution and pixel-to-pixel relative standard deviation (RSD) of plasma morphology under the combined effect of magnetic field and the reflected shock wave on fiber-optic laser-induced plasma were studied for the first time. The magnetic field was found to deform the plume mainly at the left and right sides, and the two high-intensity areas in FO-LIBS plasma rose from 8.7% to 13.8% and resisted being compressed together after the shock wave reflected. The magnetic-spatial confinements also demonstrated better enhancements in emission spectra than only spatial confinement, and the magnetic field tended to give around 20% and 50% additional enhancement on line intensity at the early and later stages of evolution, respectively. Besides, the self-reversed effect was significantly reduced in magnetic-spatial confinement, which can be explained by more evenly distributed temperatures calculated by spatially resolved spectra. Pixel-to-pixel RSD distribution of plasma morphology was studied, and it was found that the area of more fluctuated parts was reduced by 40% and concentrated on the left and right sides of the plasma in the magnetic field at the early stage. After the shock wave passed through, the two high-intensity areas were observed to fluctuate less due to the compression of the shock wave. Furthermore, shot-to-shot spectra fluctuation was also reduced by up to 50% under the magnetic-spatial confinement, which is consistent with the results of plasma morphology fluctuation. Wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor devices are developing rapidly due to their superior performance compared to traditional silicon-based devices. However, the packaging technology of traditional devices has limited the application of WBG semiconductor devices because of the challenges in electrical insulation. The complex environment of high blocking voltage, high frequency, and high temperature is the major reason for insulation failure of encapsulation structure. Therefore, in this article, an epoxy resin composite with nonlinear conductivity is proposed to be used as a coating to improve the electric field distribution of high-voltage high-power IGBT modules. First, an electrical field simulation model was built considering the thermal stress. It was found that the electric field in high temperature was improved compared with that in room temperature due to the temperature-dependent conductivity of silicone gel. Nevertheless, the risk of insulation failure still exists. After the application of nonlinear conductivity materials (NCMs) coating, the maximum electric field at the triple junctions and the ratio of electric field distortion in high field areas were significantly decreased. Further analysis showed that the optimization ratio of electric field increased with the increase of the blocking voltages or power losses in the IGBT chip. The results have demonstrated that the NCMs can reduce the maximum electric field in the IGBT encapsulation structure by 73% under the operating conditions of 120 W 10 kV. Partial discharge (PD) tests show that the partial discharge initial voltage (PDIV) of the substrates with NCM coating is increased by 33% compared with the normal encapsulation structure and the coating significantly inhibits the growth of electric trees. The proliferation of urbanization and the integration of new energy sources have stimulated the development of gas-insulated transmission lines and switchgear (GIL/GIS). In particular, the compact DC GIS in offshore converter platforms will significantly reduce footprints for DC switchyards, exhibit exceptional climatic resistance, and facilitate the cost-effective connection of remote offshore wind farms and submarine links. Nevertheless, insulators used in GIS/GIL always suffer from surface charge accumulation under DC stress, which could distort and enhance the local electric field and thus trigger a flashover at the gas–solid interface if it exceeds certain magnitude levels. This susceptibility becomes a major concern affecting the reliability of DC gas-insulated systems. Beyond these engineering-related challenges lie fundamental physics problems involving mechanisms of charge accumulation and charge-induced flashover which still require exploration. To this end, this paper presents an overview of recent advancements on this topic whilst highlighting relevant issues to be addressed. Specifically, the surface charge accumulation phenomena under DC fields are reviewed, and the charging mechanisms are summarized from macroscopic to microscopic perspectives. Further, the correlation between surface charge and surface flashover is discussed. Moreover, recent developments in tailoring methods for surface charging are also presented. The underwater electrical wire explosion (UEWE) is an appealing source of underwater shock waves (SWs) with a high conversion efficiency from electrical energy to mechanical energy, good repeatability and controllability. Industrial applications are already seen in oil-well unblocking and stratum stimulation, and research is currently underway to apply UEWEs in electro-hydraulic forming, exploitation of unconventional gas and oil resources, etc. The emerging new applications call for a review on UEWE research from the perspective of an efficient SW source. This review paper considers the physical processes and numerical simulation methods, electrical and SW characteristics, and current and potential applications, and provides suggestions for future research directions. The code (XJ_UEWE01) developed by the authors to solve a coupling model of UEWE is included. The paper will provide students and researchers new to this field with an explanation of basic concepts of UEWE and a detailed overview of previous studies, and will aid research on UEWE applications, especially device development and parameter optimization. The gas mixture CO2–O2 has been considered as an insulation and arc-quenching medium in gas-insulated switchgears. In this paper, the dielectric breakdown properties of CO2–O2 mixtures at different O2 concentrations and gas pressures were studied theoretically by considering ion kinetics in a spatial–temporal growth avalanche model. A kinetic scheme that includes all the main reactions likely to occur in CO2–O2 mixtures is presented. An improved method to calculate the dielectric strength of the gas mixture is developed, based on an avalanche model that considers both spatial growth and temporal processes. Next, the reaction rates of ionization, attachment, detachment and ion conversion, the effective ionization Townsend coefficient αeff/N, and reduced critical electric field strength (E/N)cr in CO2–O2 mixtures at different mixing ratios and gas pressures are analyzed in detail. Finally, a pulsed Townsend experiment is performed to verify the validity and accuracy of the calculation method. Based on this, one detachment reaction rate is modified to yield more accurate results. In this paper, Fe10Co25Ni34Cu23Al8 high-entropy-alloy nanoparticles have been synthesized by the in situ instantaneous electrical wire explosion method. Based on the thermodynamic parameters of the face-centered cubic phase of high-entropy-alloy, the parameters of the five kinds of wires were calculated and controlled, and the stable face-centered cubic structure with good crystallinity was synthesized in one step. The influence of the energy deposition during the electrical explosion on the nanoparticles and their electromagnetic absorption performance was explored. The results show that the face-centered cubic structure high-entropy-alloy with high crystallinity has better electromagnetic wave absorption performance when the energy deposition of the wires is increased. The minimum reflection loss can reach −39.37 dB at 15.34 GHz when the thickness is 1.9 mm and the effective absorption bandwidth is 6.63 GHz. It can provide a strategy for the microstructure and morphology design of high-entropy-alloy nanoparticles in electromagnetic wave absorption and magnetism in the electronics industry. Underwater electrical wire explosion is usually used as a source of underwater shock waves, and the generated shock wave intensity can be regulated by adopting a wire array. In this paper, the dynamics of the electrical explosion of two wires with different diameters connected in parallel were studied. The current flowing through each wire was measured to study the current distribution, and the self-emission image and laser backlight shadow image was obtained to observe the evolution of the wires. A numerical model was built to make explanations and predictions. The results showed that due to the presence of wire inductance and contact resistance between the wire and electrode, the wires are with different current densities and undergo asynchronous heating from the beginning of the discharge. Furthermore, the variation of current distribution among the wires was divided into six stages according to the moment the wire melted and exploded, and analyzed stage by stage. The unbalanced energy deposition results in obvious differences in thermal dynamic parameters, which explains the gradual "extinguishment" of the thinner wire in the self-emission image. We investigate the evolution of the species from both the target and the air, and the plasma parameter distribution of the nanosecond laser-produced plasmas in atmospheric air. The technique used is spatially resolved optical emission spectroscopy. It is argued that the N II from the air, which is distributed over a wider region than the target species in the early stages of the discharge, is primarily formed by the shock wave. The ionized species have a larger expansion velocity than the excited atoms in the first ∼100 ns, providing direct evidence for space-charge effects. The electron density decreases with the distance from the target surface in the early stages of the discharge, and both the electron density and the excited temperature variation in the axial direction are found to become insignificant at later stages. Recently, perfluoroketone C5F10O has been seen as a promising alternative gas for sulphur hexafluoride (SF6), of which the global warming potential (GWP) is extremely high. C5F10O has a good insulation property and the GWP value is only 1, thus can be used as insulation medium in gas-insulated switchgears. In this study, the decomposition pathway of C5F10O and the recombination processes of free radicals are firstly explored. Secondly, the rate constants of the reactions are calculated based on the variational transition state theory, which then are fitted in the NIST form. The results not only provide the basic data for the chemical kinetics calculations, but also supplementary data for the NIST database. Finally, the chemical kinetic calculations are performed to study the decomposition characteristics at 400 °C and 700 °C. Only 4% C5F10O decomposes at 400 °C, while 96% decomposes at 700 °C. The stable products like CO, C2F4, C2F6, C3F6 are formed. The mole fraction of CF4 is above 10–10 at 400 °C. A certain amount of C2F2 is produced at 700 °C. Besides, precise chemical kinetic composition results at steady state during the thermal decomposition of C5F10O are obtained. By analyzing the energy change of reactions, the formation of products is explained theoretically. In this paper, a calculation method is proposed to predict the dielectric strength (DS) of gases and the DS of some promising SF 6 alternative gases and their mixtures is further evaluated by DC breakdown tests. The calculation method is based on the density functional theory (DFT), so that the DS of the gases can be obtained by only calculating their molecular parameters, including the average static electronic polarizability and adiabatic ionization energy. The paper also presents the DC breakdown strength of the C 4 F 7 N, C 5 F 10 O, and HFO-type gases, and it is found that the experimental DS values are in good agreement with the calculated values. In addition, DC breakdown tests for gas mixtures are also conducted and their synergistic effect is discussed in detail. The results show that the DS of C 4 F 7 N mixed gases is equivalent to that of pure SF 6 gas even under high pressures, indicating their potential applications in HV electrical equipment. The DS of C 5 F 10 O mixed gas is slightly lower than that of C 4 F 7 N mixed gas. Compared with CO 2 , mixing with air brings stronger synergistic effect in C 5 F 10 O and C 4 F 7 N in our experiment. The DS of HFO mixture is substantially less than that of SF 6 because of the weak synergistic effect when mixed with CO 2 or N 2. Recently, C4F7N mixtures have attracted attention as a promising SF6 alternative due to their low global warming potential and excellent electrical performance. In this study, we introduce a newly built experimental setup for pulsed Townsend measurements as well as the physical model for the acquisition of electron swarm parameters. The effective ionization rate coefficients, electron drift velocity, and density-normalized longitudinal diffusion coefficients in C4F7N and its mixtures with CO2 and N2 were obtained. The reduced critical electric field for pure C4F7N at 100 Pa is determined to be 1002 Td, while it decreases with increasing pressure because of the effect of ion kinetics during the discharge process. C4F7N shows good synergism with CO2 and N2. To have a dielectric strength equivalent to that of SF6, the mixing ratio of C4F7N in its mixtures with CO2 and N2 should be 18% and 12%, respectively. Electrical explosion of wires (EEW) was carried out in an argon atmosphere for the preparation of nanoparticles. Aluminium wires with 0.1 mm diameter and 13 cm length (low mass) and 0.4 mm diameter and 11 cm length (high mass) were used, for which the vaporization energy of the wire was, respectively, far below and comparable to the initial stored energy of the power-supply capacitors. A numerical model was used to study the nanoparticle formation within the exploding wire plasmas. The model is based on a moment method and was modified according to the specific requirements of EEW—rapid expansion of the exploding wire and a high concentration of monomers—to take into consideration the quenching due to mechanical work on the surrounding medium, the energy release during the vapour–liquid phase transition, and the coagulation of liquid particles. The calculation took initial and boundary values from the experimental results and predicted average particle diameters of 36 nm and 116 nm for the low mass and high mass wire respectively, which are in qualitative agreement with the experimental values of 33 nm and 103 nm obtained from SEM images. The nucleation mechanisms including homogeneous nucleation and ion-induced nucleation are discussed in detail; the importance of including the phase transition and coagulation is demonstrated.
