Poly(vinylidene fluoride)-based terpolymers, known for having the largest dielectric constant among the existing dielectric polymers, are attractive materials for electrostatic film capacitors used in lightweight electrification systems. However, the potential of these terpolymers in film capacitor applications remains constrained by their low electrical insulating and mechanical strengths. To address these limitations, we introduced rigid covalent organic framework (COF) nanospheres into the thin films of soft terpolymers via in situ synthesis and a facile layer-by-layer solution casting method, whereby multilayer films consisting of two polymer outer layers and a COF-containing middle layer were readily obtained. The resultant all-organic thin films exhibit simultaneously high dielectric constant, enhanced breakdown strength, superior energy density (∼25 J cm–3) at efficiencies over 80%, along with greatly improved mechanical self-supporting capability and excellent mechanical flexibility. This work demonstrates the unprecedented use of COF for electrostatic energy storage, uncovering its potential for flexible electronic applications operating under high electric fields.

Achieving hierarchical nanomaterials from a bottom-up approach remains challenging. Here, we report a closed-cage, onion nanostructure of covalent organic framework (COF) obtained through a low-temperature solvothermal synthesis. Atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed the atomic arrangement in this COF onion, in which rich nitrogen was uniformly embedded in the periodic porous graphitic framework. The COF onion structure displayed graphitic features at a 0.33 nm interlayer spacing with Van der Waals interactions predominated between the layers. The onion layers exhibited significant heterogeneity in layer stacking by adopting a combination of different stacking modes. Defects were also found, such as five- or seven-member rings deviating from the perfect hexagonal lattice. These geometrical defects resulted in curving the 2D layers, which may have promoted the formation of onion nanostructures through a layer-by-layer attachment. We constructed a corresponding model that predicts COF onion properties. This novel onion exhibited a bandgap value of 2.56 eV, resembling other carbon-based nanomaterials, suggesting potential applications in sensors, photocatalysts, and nanoelectronics.

Fire poses a substantial threat to concrete structures because calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) is not thermally stable at high temperatures. Herein, in situ TEM at temperatures from 20 to 800 °C was conducted to study the thermal-induced structural changes in C-S-H. We captured C-S-H shrinks at an average rate of 0.02 μm2/oC upon heating with three stages observed, including induction, constant, and rapid periods. Our observation revealed that an 800 nm pore could be healed during pore structure evolution owing to the reconstruction and deformation among C-S-H blocks. The Ca/Si ratio was dropped at higher temperatures because of the leakage of calcium ions from the C-S-H structure to form CaO precipitates. The temperature-driven phase transformation and degradation were also detected using electron diffraction that C-S-H was transformed into metastable calcium silicate minerals above 800 °C. This work provides insights into the nanoscale transformation of C-S-H at high temperatures.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with efficient charge transport and exceptional chemical stability are emerging as an import class of semiconducting materials for opto-/electronic devices and energy-related applications. However, the limited synthetic chemistry to access such materials and the lack of mechanistic understanding of carrier mobility greatly hinder their practical applications. Herein, we report the synthesis of three chemically stable polyarylether-based metallophthalocyanine COFs (PAE-PcM, M = Cu, Ni, and Co) and facile in situ growth of their thin films on various substrates (i.e., SiO2/Si, ITO, quartz) under solvothermal conditions. We show that PAE-PcM COFs thin films with van der Waals layered structures exhibit p-type semiconducting properties with the intrinsic mobility up to ∼19.4 cm2 V-1 s-1 and 4 orders of magnitude of increase in conductivity for PAE-PcCu film (0.2 S m-1) after iodine doping. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the carrier transport in the framework is anisotropic, with the out-of-plane hole transport along columnar stacked phthalocyanine more favorable. Furthermore, PAE-PcCo shows the redox behavior maximumly contributes ∼88.5% of its capacitance performance, giving rise to a high surface area normalized capacitance of ∼19 μF cm-2. Overall, this work not only offers fundamental understandings of electronic properties of polyarylether-based 2D COFs but also paves the way for their energy-related applications.

Two frontier crystalline porous framework materials, namely, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been widely explored owing to their outstanding physicochemical properties. While each type of framework has its own intrinsic advantages and shortcomings for specific applications, combining the complementary properties of the two materials allows the engineering of new classes of hybrid porous crystalline materials with properties superior to the individual components. Since the first report of MOF/COF hybrid in 2016, it has rapidly evolved as a novel platform for diverse applications. The state-of-art advances in the various synthetic approaches of MOF/COF hybrids are hereby summarized, together with their applications in different areas. Perspectives on the main challenges and future opportunities are also offered in order to inspire a multidisciplinary effort toward the further development of chemically diverse, multi-functional hybrid porous crystalline materials.

Topochemical polymerization reactions hold the promise of producing ultra-high molecular weight crystalline polymers. However, the totality of topochemical polymerization reactions has failed to produce ultra-high molecular weight polymers that are both soluble and display variable functionality, which are restrained by the crystal-packing and reactivity requirements on their respective monomers in the solid state. Herein, we demonstrate the topochemical polymerization reaction of a family of para-azaquinodimethane compounds that undergo facile visible light and thermally initiated polymerization in the solid state, allowing for the first determination of a topochemical polymer crystal structure resolved via the cryoelectron microscopy technique of microcrystal electron diffraction. The topochemical polymerization reaction also displays excellent functional group tolerance, accommodating both solubilizing side chains and reactive groups that allow for post-polymerization functionalization. The thus-produced soluble ultra-high molecular weight polymers display superior capacitive energy storage properties. This study overcomes several synthetic and characterization challenges amongst topochemical polymerization reactions, representing a critical step toward their broader application.

Two-dimensional polyimide covalent organic framework (2D PI-NT COF) films were constructed on indium tin oxide-coated glass substrates to fabricate two-terminal sandwiched resistive memory devices. The 2D PI-NT COF films condensated from the reaction between 4,4',4″-triaminotriphenylamine and naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic dianhydride under solvothermal conditions demonstrated high crystallinity, good orientation preference, tunable thickness, and low surface roughness. The well-aligned electron-donor (triphenylamine unit) and -acceptor (naphthalene diimide unit) arrays rendered the 2D PI-NT COF films a promising candidate for electronic applications. The memory devices based on 2D PI-NT COF films exhibited a typical write-once-read-many-time resistive switching behavior under an operating voltage of +2.30 V on the positive scan and -2.64 V on the negative scan. A high ON/OFF current ratio (>106 for the positive scan and 104-106 for the negative scan) and long-term retention time indicated the high fidelity, low error, and high stability of the resistive memory devices. The memory behavior was attributed to an electric field-induced intramolecular charge transfer in an ordered donor-acceptor system, which provided the effective charge-transfer channels for injected charge carriers. This work represents the first example that explores the resistive memory properties of 2D PI-COF films, shedding light on the potential application of 2D COFs as information storage media.

The research interest in covalent organic frameworks (COFs) has grown rapidly in the past decade. As a unique class of cross-linked polymers, COFs distinguish themselves from conventional polymers with precise skeleton periodicity, tailor-made pore metrics, and lightweight organic backbones, which render COFs as an auspicious platform for engineering functional materials with broad applications. One constraint to the practical applications of COF is its limited chemical stability, which ties to the inherent properties of the linking chemistries that are generally thermodynamically reversible. Progress in improving the chemical robustness of COFs presents an important step toward fully unleashing their potential for intricate energy and environmentally related applications.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a burgeoning class of crystalline porous materials constructed by covalently connecting organic building blocks, have garnered tremendous attention. The predominant solvothermal synthesis of COFs usually requires high temperature and long reaction times (three days or longer), which creates substantial obstacles for their accelerated discovery and exploration in practical applications. Hence, the expeditious synthesis of COFs without compromising their inherent properties is exceedingly appealing from the viewpoint of cost, time, and energy footprint. To overcome the sluggishness of the synthesis, considerable efforts have been invested in the rapid synthesis of high-quality COFs through innovations in energy source, catalyst, solvent, monomer, nucleation, and workup activation, leading to a drastic reduction of reaction time from multiple days to a few hours, and even to seconds in some cases. In this contribution, we provide a comprehensive overview of the advances in expediting the synthesis science of COFs. Though a nascent effort, six prevalent strategies have been identified for the rapid synthesis of COFs, which have led to intriguing applications in a diverse range of areas including gas adsorption, separation, heterogeneous catalysis, environmental remediation, and photodynamic therapy. We also outline the major challenges and perspectives on the future directions empowered by expeditious COF synthesis.

Ordered interlayer stacking is intrinsic in two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D COFs) and has strong implications on COF's optoelectronic properties. Reversible interlayer sliding, corresponding to shearing of 2D layers along their basal plane, is an appealing dynamic control of both structures and properties, yet it remains unexplored in the 2D COF field. Herein, we demonstrate that the reversible interlayer sliding can be realized in an imine-linked tetrathiafulvalene (TTF)-based COF TTF-DMTA. The solvent treatment induces crystalline phase changes between the proposed staircase-like sql net structure and a slightly slipped eclipsed sql net structure. The solvation-induced crystallinity changes correlate well with reversible spectroscopic and electrical conductivity changes as demonstrated in oriented COF thin films. In contrast, no reversible switching is observed in a related TTF-TA COF, which differs from TTF-DMTA in terms of the absence of methoxy groups on the phenylene linkers. This work represents the first 2D COF example of which eclipsed and staircase-like aggregated states are interchangeably accessed via interlayer sliding, an uncharted structural feature that may enable applications such as chemiresistive sensors.

Membrane-based separations can mitigate the capital- and energy-intensive challenges associated with traditional thermally driven processes. To further push the boundary of gas separations, mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have been extensively exploited; however, identifying an optimal nanofiller to boost the separation performance of MMMs beyond Robeson permeability-selectivity upper bounds remains an ongoing challenge. Here, a new class of MMMs based on pyrazine-fused crystalline porous graphitic frameworks (PGFs) is reported. At a loading of 6 wt % PGFs, the MMMs surpass the current H2/CH4 Robeson upper bound, ideally suited for applications such as H2 regeneration. In addition, the fabricated MMMs exhibit appealing CO2 separation performance, closely approaching the current Robeson upper bounds for CO2 separation. Compared with the pristine polymeric membranes, the PGF-based MMMs display a record-high enhancement of gas permeability over 120% while maintaining intrinsic gas selectivities. Highlighting the crucial role of the crystallinity of nanofillers, this study demonstrates a facile and effective approach in formulating high-performance MMMs, complementing state-of-the-art membrane formation processes. The design principles open the door to energy-efficient separations of gas mixtures with enhanced productivity compatible with the current membrane manufacturing.

Porous graphitic framework (PGF) is a two-dimensional (2D) material that has emerging energy applications. An archetype contains stacked 2D layers, the structure of which features a fully annulated aromatic skeleton with embedded heteroatoms and periodic pores. Due to the lack of a rational approach in establishing in-plane order under mild synthetic conditions, the structural integrity of PGF has remained elusive and ultimately limited its material performance. Here, we report the discovery of the unusual dynamic character of the C=N bonds in the aromatic pyrazine ring system under basic aqueous conditions, which enables the successful synthesis of a crystalline porous nitrogenous graphitic framework with remarkable in-plane order, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction studies and direct visualization using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The crystalline framework displays superior performance as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries, outperforming the amorphous counterparts in terms of capacity and cycle stability. Insertion of well-defined, evenly spaced nanoscale pores into the two-dimensional (2D) layers of graphene invokes exciting properties due to the modulation of its electronic band gaps and surface functionalities. A bottom-up synthesis approach to such porous graphitic frameworks (PGFs) is appealing but also remains a great challenge. The current methods of building covalent organic frameworks rely on a small collection of thermodynamically reversible reactions. Such reactions are, however, inadequate in generating a fully annulated aromatic skeleton in PGFs. With the discovery of dynamic pyrazine formation, we succeeded in applying this linking chemistry to obtain a crystalline PGF material, which has displayed high electrical conductivity and remarkable performance as a cathode material for lithium-ion batteries. We envision that the demonstrated success will open the door to a wide array of fully annulated 2D porous frameworks, which hold immense potential for clean energy applications. The growing interest in two-dimensional imine-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) is inspired by their crystalline porous structures and the potential for extensive π-electron delocalization. The intrinsic reversibility and strong polarization of imine linkages, however, leads to insufficient chemical stability and optoelectronic properties. Developing COFs with improved robustness and π-delocalization is highly desirable but remains an unsettled challenge. Here we report a facile strategy that transforms imine-linked COFs into ultrastable porous aromatic frameworks by kinetically fixing the reversible imine linkage via an aza-Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction. The as-formed, quinoline-linked COFs not only retain crystallinity and porosity, but also display dramatically enhanced chemical stability over their imine-based COF precursors, rendering them among the most robust COFs up-to-date that can withstand strong acidic, basic and redox environment. Owing to the chemical diversity of the cycloaddition reaction and structural tunability of COFs, the pores of COFs can be readily engineered to realize pre-designed surface functionality.

Organic dyes are widely used in many important areas, but they also bring many issues for water pollution. To address the above issues, a reconstructed kaolinite hybrid compound (γ-AlOOH@A-Kaol) was obtained from raw kaolinite (Kaol) in this work. The product was then characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (ATR-FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the absorption properties of γ-AlOOH@A-Kaol for congo red were further studied. The results demonstrated that flower-like γ-AlOOH with nanolamellae were uniformly loaded on the surface of acid-treated Kaol with a porous structure (A-Kaol). In addition, the surface area (36.5 m2/g), pore volume (0.146 cm3/g), and pore size (13.0 nm) of γ-AlOOH@A-Kaol were different from those of A-Kaol (127.4 m2/g, 0.127 cm3/g, and 4.28 nm, respectively) and γ-AlOOH (34.1 m2/g, 0.315 cm3/g, and 21.5 nm, respectively). The unique structure could significantly enhance the sorption capacity for congo red, which could exceed 1000 mg/g. The reasons may be ascribed to the abundant groups of -OH, large specific surface area, and porous structure of γ-AlOOH@A-Kaol. This work provides an efficient route for comprehensive utilization and production of Kaol-based compound materials that could be used in the field of environmental conservation. In the context of global climate change, the low-carbon city pilot policy has become an important strategy to promote green development. Based on the panel data from 257 prefecture-level and above cities in China, this study utilized the Super-Efficiency SBM (Slacks-Based Measure) to measure the land green use efficiency and analyzes the impact of the policy on adjacent non-pilot cities using a difference-in-differences model. The findings indicate that the implementation of low-carbon pilot policies can significantly improve the land green use efficiency in adjacent non-pilot cities, which can be primarily ascribed to the spillover effect and catfish effect. A heterogeneity analysis further revealed the positive effects of the policies in the eastern region and non-resource-based cities. This study provides valuable references for relevant legal provisions on environmental regulation and for continuously monitoring and evaluating the policy effects to achieve sustainable development goals.
