1. Burn-in Test and Thermal Performance Evaluation of Silicon Photomultipliers for the JUNO-TAO Experiment

Abstract

This study evaluates more than 4,000 tiles made of Hamamatsu visual-sensitive silicon photomultipier (SiPM), each with dimensions of 5 $\times$ 5 cm$^2$, intended for the central detector of the Taishan Anti-neutrino Observatory (TAO), a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) aimed at measuring the reactor anti-neutrino energy spectrum with unprecedented energy resolution. All SiPM tiles underwent a room temperature burn-in test in the dark for two weeks, while cryogenic testing analyzed the thermal dependence of parameters for some sampled SiPMs. Results from these comprehensive tests provide crucial insights into the long-term performance and stability of the 10 square meters of SiPMs operating at -50{\deg}C to detect scintillation photons in the TAO detector. Despite some anomalies awaiting further inspection, all SiPMs successfully passed the burn-in test over two weeks at room temperature, which is equivalent to 6.7 years at -50{\deg}C. Results are also used to guide optimal SiPM selection, configuration, and operation, ensuring reliability and sustainability in reactor neutrino measurements. 2. Multipartite entanglement serves as a faithful detector for quantum phase transitions

Abstract

We investigate quantum phase transitions in various spin chain systems using the multipartite entanglement measure $\tau_{SEF}$ based on the monogamy inequality of squared entanglement of formation. Our results demonstrate that $\tau_{SEF}$ is more effective and reliable than bipartite entanglement or bipartite correlation measures such as entanglement of formation, von Neumann entropy, and quantum discord in characterizing quantum phase transitions. $\tau_{SEF}$ not only detects critical points that may go unnoticed by other detectors but also avoids the issue of singularity at non-critical points encountered by other measures. Furthermore, by applying $\tau_{SEF}$, we have obtained the phase diagram for the XY spin chain with three and four interactions and discovered a new quantum phase.

Abstract

We report a study of isoelectronic chemical substitution in the recently discovered quantum critical ferromagnet CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$. Upon silicon-doping, the ferromagnetic ordering temperature of CeRh$_6$(Ge$_{1-x}$Si$_x$)$_4$ is continuously suppressed, and no transition is observed beyond $x_c$$\approx$0.125. Non-Fermi liquid behavior with $C/T \propto$log($T^*/T$) is observed close to $x_c$, indicating the existence of strong quantum fluctuations, while the $T$-linear behavior observed upon pressurizing the parent compound is absent in the resistivity, which appears to be a consequence of the disorder induced by silicon doping. Our findings provide evidence for the role played by disorder on the unusual ferromagnetic quantum criticality in CeRh$_6$Ge$_4$, and provides further evidence for understanding the origin of this behavior.

Abstract

JUNO is a 20-kton liquid scintillator detector aiming to determine the neutrino mass ordering, precisely measure the oscillation parameters, detect the astrophysical neutrinos and search for exotic physics. It is designed to reach an energy resolution of 3% at 1 MeV with the highest ever PMT coverage, using two types of 20 inch phototubes: MCP-PMT from NNVT and dynode-PMT from Hamamatsu. In this article, the gain and charge response of the MCP and dynode PMTs are investigated with the study of JUNO Central Detector prototype. The linearity of the MCP-PMT charge output is measured too to check the effect of a long tail on its charge spectrum.

We present the numerical tool DECaNT (Diffusion of Excitons in Carbon NanoTubes) that simulates exciton transport in thin films of carbon nanotubes. Through a mesh of nanotubes generated using the Bullet Physics C++ library, excitons move according to an ensemble Monte Carlo algorithm, with the scattering rates that account for tube chirality, orientation, and distance. 12. Current-induced four-state magnetization switching by spin-orbit torques in perpendicular ferromagnetic trilayers

Abstract

We demonstrated current-induced four-state magnetization switching in a trilayer system using spin-orbit torques. The memory device contains two Co layers with different perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, separated by a space layer of Pt. Making use of the opposite spin current at the top and bottom surface of the middle Pt layer, magnetization of both Co layers can be switched oppositely by the spin-orbit torques with different critical switching currents. By changing the current pulse forms through the device, the four magnetic states memory was demonstrated. Our device provides a new idea for the design of low power and high density spin-orbit torque devices.

Abstract

A general feature of unconventional superconductors is the existence of a superconducting dome in the phase diagram as a function of carrier concentration. For the simplest iron-based superconductor FeSe (with transition temperature Tc ~ 8 K), its Tc can be greatly enhanced by doping electrons via many routes, even up to 65 K in monolayer FeSe/SiTiO3. However, a clear phase diagram with carrier concentration for FeSe-derived superconductors is still lacking. Here, we report the observation of a series of discrete superconducting phases in FeSe thin flakes by continuously tuning carrier concentration through the intercalation of Li and Na ions with a solid ionic gating technique. Such discrete superconducting phases are robust against the substitution of Se by 20% S, but are vulnerable to the substitution of Fe by 2% Cu, highlighting the importance of the iron site being intact. Abstract

Biomass can reflect crop growth and nutritional status. Focusing on winter wheat as the study subject, this research processed canopy hyperspectral data from various growth stages using fractionalorder differentiation (FOD) and continuous wavelet transform. The correlation between the data and biomass was analyzed, FOD spectra and wavelet energy coefficients with strong correlations were identified, and biomass models for estimating wheat during various growth stages were constructed through optimal subset regression (OSR) and support vector machine (SVM) approaches. Through the analysis of the modeling and verification results--in terms of the coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), normalized RMSE, and other indicators--the optimal biomass estimation models for all growth stages and the growth stages with the highest accuracy were determined. The OSR and SVM models showed the highest modeling and validation R2 values of 0.92 and 0.88, respectively, while the average showed values of 0.84 and 0.71, respectively, indicating an excellent overall biomass estimation performance. The average modeling and validation R2 values at the flowering and filling stages were 0.89, 0.88 and 0.86, 0.84, respectively, demonstrating comparable biomass estimation accuracies between these two growth stages, which was higher than that at the jointing and booting stages. Thus, flowering and filling are the best growth stages for estimation. The FOD-based OSR model provided a higher estimation accuracy for the jointing and filling stages, while the FOD-based SVM model yielded for the booting and flowering stages. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The large-scale distribution of neutral hydrogen in the Universe will be luminous through its 21 cm emission. Here, for the first time, we use the auto-power spectrum of 21 cm intensity fluctuations to constrain neutral hydrogen fluctuations at z~0.8. Our data were acquired with the Green Bank Telescope and span the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1 over two fields totalling ~41 deg. sq. and 190 h of radio integration time. The dominant synchrotron foregrounds exceed the signal by ~10^3, but have fewer degrees of freedom and can be removed efficiently. Even in the presence of residual foregrounds, the auto-power can still be interpreted as an upper bound on the 21 cm signal. Our previous measurements of the cross-correlation of 21 cm intensity and the WiggleZ galaxy survey provide a lower bound. Through a Bayesian treatment of signal and foregrounds, we can combine both fields in auto- and cross-power into a measurement of Omega_HI b_HI = [0.62^{+0.23}_{-0.15}] * 10^{-3} at 68% confidence with 9% systematic calibration uncertainty, where Omega_HI is the neutral hydrogen (HI) fraction and b_HI is the HI bias parameter. Abstract

We calculate real-space static correlation functions related to basic entities of the one-dimensional Hubbard model, which emerge from the exact Bethe-ansatz solution. These entities involve complex rearrangements of the original electrons. Basic ingredients are operators related to unoccupied, singly occupied with spin up or spin down and doubly occupied sites. The spatial decay of their correlation functions is determined using an approximate mean-field-like approach based on the Zou-Anderson transformation and DMRG results for the half-filled case. In this letter, 21 cm intensity maps acquired at the Green Bank Telescope are cross-correlated with large-scale structure traced by galaxies in the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. The data span the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1 over two fields totaling ~41 deg. sq. and 190 hours of radio integration time. The cross-correlation constrains Omega_HI b_HI r = [0.43 \pm 0.07 (stat.) \pm 0.04(sys.)] x 10^-3, where Omega_HI is the neutral hydrogen HI fraction, r is the galaxy-hydrogen correlation coefficient, and b_HI is the HI bias parameter. This is the most precise constraint on neutral hydrogen density fluctuations in a challenging redshift range. Abstract

With the growth of industrialization, the global manufacturing industry is continually evolving and reforming in the direction of intelligence and green production. Industrial robots have replaced human workers because of the benefit of production efficiency. However, the large-scale application of robots requires a large amount of energy consumption and generates a large amount of CO2, which will lead to energy waste and environmental pollution. In addition, in term of performing some particular tasks, current robot technology cannot achieve the same level of intelligence as human. Therefore, the design trend of assembly lines in industry has shifted from traditional configuration to human-robot collaboration to achieve higher productivity and flexibility. This paper investigates the human-robot collaboration (HRC) assembly line balancing problem, taking cycle time and carbon emission as primary and secondary objectives. A new mixed-integer programming model that features a cross-station design is formulated. A particle swarm algorithm (PSO) with two improvement rules is designed to solve the problems. The comparative experiments on ten benchmark datasets are conducted to assess the performance of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results indicate that the improved particle swarm algorithm is superior to the other two heuristics: simulated annealing (SA) and the late acceptance hill-climbing heuristic (LAHC). The rapid propagation of the International Baccalaureate (IB) in the East and Southeast Asian region, together with the continuing globalisation of education, has generated implementational opportunities and challenges for teachers within the IB network of schools. Based on semi-structured interviews with teachers and school leaders across 15 IB Diploma Programme (DP) schools within the three milieus of Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore, the study explored how DP's expansion fuelled ambiguities and inconsistencies in programme policy, which impacted on professional cultures and assessments. The analysis highlights the overreliance on the voluntary contribution of teachers and external examiners in supporting professional development and assessments as well as the connection of assessments to anxiety and dissonance in teachers. Abstract

The Global Consortium for the Classification of Fungi and fungus-like taxa is an international initiative of more than 550 mycologists to develop an electronic structure for the classification of these organisms. The members of the Consortium originate from 55 countries/regions worldwide, from a wide range of disciplines, and include senior, mid-career and early-career mycologists and plant pathologists. The Consortium will publish a biannual update of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa, to act as an international scheme for other scientists. Notes on all newly published taxa at or above the level of species will be prepared and published online on the Outline of Fungi website (https://www.outlineoffungi.org/), and these will be finally published in the biannual edition of the Outline of Fungi and fungus-like taxa. Comments on recent important taxonomic opinions on controversial topics will be included in the biannual outline. For example, 'to promote a more stable taxonomy in Fusarium given the divergences over its generic delimitation', or 'are there too many genera in the Boletales?' and even more importantly, 'what should be done with the tremendously diverse 'dark fungal taxa?' There are undeniable differences in mycologists' perceptions and opinions regarding species classification as well as the establishment of new species. Given the pluralistic nature of fungal taxonomy and its implications for species concepts and the nature of species, this consortium aims to provide a platform to better refine and stabilise fungal classification, taking into consideration views from different parties. In the future, a confidential voting system will be set up to gauge the opinions of all mycologists in the Consortium on important topics. Abstract

We present the numerical tool DECaNT (Diffusion of Excitons in Carbon NanoTubes) that simulates exciton transport in thin films of carbon nanotubes. Through a mesh of nanotubes generated using the Bullet Physics C++ library, excitons move according to an ensemble Monte Carlo algorithm, with the scattering rates that account for tube chirality, orientation, and distance. We calculate the diffusion tensor from the position–position correlation functions and analyze its anisotropy and dependence on the film composition, morphology, and defect density. Abstract

Response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to predict optimum conditions for extraction of flavonoid from Coreopsis tinctoria Nutt. A central composite design (CCD) was used to monitor the effect of extraction temperature, extraction time, and water-to-material ratio on yield of total flavonoids. The optimal extraction conditions were obtained as water-to-material ratio of 55 ml g−1, extraction temperature of 80 °C and extraction time of 70 minutes. Under these conditions, the average total flavonoids yield, according to the mass of raw material, was 9.0 ± 0.6 %, which corresponds to the predicted value of 8.9 %. Thus, the extraction method was applied successfully to extract total flavonoids from C. tinctoria.

Abstract

Avoiding the major disruption is of paramount importance in future reactor-level devices, for which understanding the disruption mechanism is essential. In this work, MHD instabilities and related dynamic interactions during the major disruption have been investigated in the ohmically heated plasmas in the HL-2A tokamak. It is reported that the interaction between a kind of edge-oscillating-mode (EOM) perturbation and a rotating m/n = 2/1 tearing mode (TM) inside the plasma plays an important role in inducing the mode locking and the subsequent disruption. The EOM perturbation is oscillating in the laboratory frame, which is proposed to be originally generated by the penetrated error field at the plasma edge and is modulated by the rotating 2/1 TM mode. Before mode locking, the 2D electron cyclotron emission imaging shows that the momentary coupling of the EOM and the 2/1 mode can be decoupled each other and the mode structure does not alter significantly. After the mode locking, the EOM and the 2/1 mode expand and couple each other and induce the heat transfer from the core to the edge. The influence of the TM instability and the EOM perturbation on surrounding plasmas prior to the mode locking has also been presented. The results deepen our understanding of the disruption dynamics related to the external field perturbations, especially in the presence of TMs inside the plasma. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
