Abstract

The contributions of meteorology and emissions to air pollutant trends are critical for air quality management, but they have not been fully analyzed, especially in the background area of northern China. Here, we used a machine learning technique to quantify the impacts of meteorological conditions and emissions on PM2.5, NO2, SO2, O3, and CO pollution during 2013–2021 and evaluated their contributions to Clean Air Action policies. The annual effect of the meteorology on PM2.5, NO2, SO2, and CO levels was dominated by the meteorological conditions during the cold season, while that of the O3level largely depended on the meteorological conditions during the warm season. Meteorology-driven anomalies contributed −14.8 to 10.3%, −8.5 to 7.3%, −11 to 7.1%, −7.9 to 6.0%, and −7.4 to 7.3% to the annual mean concentrations of PM2.5, NO2, SO2, O3, and CO during the study period, respectively. The Clean Air Actions have led to a major improvement in the air quality at regional scale, with the reduction of 1.7 μg m−3year−1, 0.2 μg m−3year−1, 1.5 μg m−3year−1, 0.7 μg m−3year−1, and 0.03 mg m−3year−1for PM2.5, NO2, SO2, O3, and CO at background area, respectively, after meteorological correction. Although emissions dominated the long-term variations in pollutants, the meteorological conditions obviously played a positive role during the action periods for pollutants except for O3. Considering the notable effects of the meteorological conditions on air pollution and the interreaction between pollutants, a more comprehensive control strategy should be considered on a broader regional scale.

21. Revealing the sulfur dioxide emission reductions in China by assimilating surface observations in WRF-Chem.

Abstract

The anthropogenic emission of the sulfur dioxide (SO2) over China has significantly declined as the consequence of clean air actions. In this study, we have developed a new emission inversion system based on a Four-Dimensional Local Ensemble Transform Kalman Filter (4D-LETKF) and the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled with Chemistry (WRF-Chem) to dynamically update the SO2 emission grid by grid over China by assimilating the ground-based hourly SO2 observations. Sensitivity tests for the assimilation system have been conducted firstly to tune four system parameters: ensemble size, horizontal and temporal localization lengths, and perturbation size. Our results reveal that the same random perturbation factors used throughout the whole model grids with assimilating observations within about 180 km can efficiently optimize the SO2 emission, whereas the ensemble size has only little effect. The temporal localization by assimilating only the subsequent hourly observations can reveal the diurnal variation of the SO2 emission, which is better than that to update the the magnitude of SO2 emission every 12 hours by assimilating all the observations within the 12-hour window. The inverted SO2 emission over China in November 2016 has declined by an average of 49.4 % since 2010, which is well in agreement with the bottom-up estimation of 48.0 %. Larger reductions of SO2 emission are found over the priori higher source regions such as the Yangtze River Delta (YRD). The simulated SO2 surface mass concentrations using two distinguished chemical reaction mechanisms are both much more comparable to the observations with the newly inverted SO2 emission than those with the priori emission. These indicate that the newly developed emission inversion system can efficiently update the SO2 emissions based on the routine surface SO2 observations. The reduced SO2 emission induces the sulfate and PM2.5 surface concentrations to decrease up to 10 μg m-3 over the center China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

38. Polyaniline/g-C3N4composites as novel media for anticorrosion coatings

Abstract

In this paper, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) was first proposed for the pioneer application of anticorrosion coatings. Original g-C3N4was facilely treated using HNO3and the exfoliated g-C3N4sheets (E-g-C3N4) were fabricated, and then, polyaniline/E-g-C3N4composites (PANI/E-g-C3N4) as novel anticorrosive media were synthesized by chemical oxidative polymerization and devoted to the corrosion protection of coatings. The E-g-C3N4sheets and PANI/E-g-C3N4composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared, thermogravimetric analysis, and transmission electron microscopy. The anticorrosion properties of the samples prepared were investigated by electrochemical measurements including Tafel plots, electrochemical impedance spectra, and open-circuit potential. Accelerated corrosion tests of iron panels coated by PANI/E-g-C3N4were performed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. Anticorrosive mechanism of PANI/E-g-C3N4was discussed in detail. PANI/E-g-C3N4-3 fillers possessed superior corrosion inhibition than individual components on iron coatings, which was due to the synergetic effect of anticorrosion between E-g-C3N4and PANI.
