The concept of distributed consensus gained widespread attention following the publication of "Byzantine Generals Problem" by Leslie Lamport in the 1980s. This research topic has been active and extensively studied over the last four decades, particularly since the advent of blockchain technology in 2009. Blockchain technology employs Proof-of-X (PoX) or Byzantine-fault-tolerant (BFT) systems, where all participants follow a protocol to achieve a common state (i.e., consistency) eventually. However, because PoX consensus such as Proof-of-Work is is resource-intensive with high power consumption, most permissioned blockchains employ BFT to achieve consistency. In this article, we provide an introduction to the fundamental principles and history of distributed consensus. We then explore the well-known fault-tolerant state machine replication (SMR) in partially synchronous networks, as well as consensus protocols in asynchronous models and recently proposed DAG-based consensus. Additionally, we examine the relationship between BFT consensus and blockchain technology and discuss the following questions: What is the history and evolution of BFT? Why are BFT protocols designed in the way they are and what core components do they use? What is the connection between BFT and blockchain technology, and what are the driving needs for future BFT research?

Due to the utilization of large antenna arrays at base stations (BSs) and the operations of wireless communications in high frequency bands, mobile terminals often find themselves in the near-field of the array aperture. In this work, we address the signal processing challenges of integrated near-field localization and communication in uplink transmission of an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system, where the BS performs joint near-field localization and signal detection (JNFLSD). We show that JNFLSD can be formulated as a matrix factorization (MF) problem with proper structures imposed on the factor matrices. Then, leveraging the variational inference (VI) and unitary approximate message passing (UAMP), we develop a low complexity Bayesian approach to MF, called UAMP-MF, to handle a generic MF problem. We then apply the UAMP-MF algorithm to solve the JNFLSD problem, where the factor matrix structures are fully exploited. Power saving is a main pillar in the operation of wireless communication systems. In this paper, we investigate cloud radio access network (C-RAN) capability to reduce power consumption based on the user equipment (UE) requirement. Aiming to save the long-term C-RAN energy consumption, an optimization problem is formulated to manage the downlink power without degrading the UE requirement by designing the power offset parameter. Considering stochastic traffic arrivals at UEs, we first formulate the problem as a Markov decision process (MDP) and then set up a dual objective optimization problem in terms of the downlink throughput and power. To solve this optimization problem, we develop a novel static deep Q-learning (SDQL) algorithm to maximize the downlink throughput and minimize the downlink power. In our proposed algorithm, we design multi-Q-tables to simultaneously optimize power reductions of activated RRHs by assigning one Q-table for each UE. To maximize the accumulative reward in terms of the downlink throughput loss and power reduction, our proposed algorithm performs power reductions of activated RRHs through continuous environmental interactions. Simulation results1 show that our proposed algorithm enjoys a superior average power reduction compared to the activation and sleep schemes, and enjoys a low computational complexity.

Machine learning has been considered a promising approach for indoor localization. Nevertheless, the sample efficiency, scalability, and generalization ability remain open issues of implementing learning-based algorithms in practical systems. In this paper, we establish a zero-shot learning framework that does not need real-world measurements in a new communication environment. Specifically, a graph neural network that is scalable to the number of access points (APs) and mobile devices (MDs) is used for obtaining coarse locations of MDs. Based on the coarse locations, the floor-plan image between an MD and an AP is exploited to improve localization accuracy in a floor-plan-aided deep neural network. To further improve the generalization ability, we develop a synthetic data generator that provides synthetic data samples in different scenarios, where real-world samples are not available. We implement the framework in a prototype that estimates the locations of MDs. Experimental results show that our zero-shot learning method can reduce localization errors by around $30$\% to $55$\% compared with three baselines from the existing literature.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with multiple antennas have recently been explored to improve capacity in wireless networks. However, the strict energy constraint of UAVs, given their simultaneous flying and communication tasks, renders the exploration of energy-efficient multi-antenna techniques indispensable for UAVs. Meanwhile, lens antenna subarray (LAS) emerges as a promising energy-efficient solution that has not been previously harnessed for this purpose. In this paper, we propose a LAS-aided multi-antenna UAV to serve ground users in the downlink transmission of the terahertz (THz) band, utilizing rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) for effective beam division multiplexing. We formulate an optimization problem of maximizing the total system spectral efficiency (SE). This involves optimizing the UAV's transmit beamforming and the common rate of RSMA. By recasting the optimization problem into a Markov decision process (MDP), we propose a deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG)-based resource allocation mechanism tailored to capture problem dynamics and optimize its variables. Moreover, given the UAV's frequent mobility and consequential system reconfigurations, we fortify the trained DDPG model with a meta-learning strategy, enhancing its adaptability to system variations. Numerically, more than 20\% energy efficiency gain is achieved by our proposed LAS-aided multi-antenna UAV equipped with 4 lenses, compared to a single-lens UAV. Simulations also demonstrate that at a signal-to-noise (SNR) of 10 dB, the incorporation of RSMA results in a 22\% SE enhancement over conventional orthogonal beam division multiple access. Furthermore, the overall system SE improves by 27\%, when meta-learning is employed for fine-tuning the conventional DDPG method in literature.

Traffic intersections present significant challenges for the safe and efficient maneuvering of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). This research proposes an innovative roadside unit (RSU)-assisted cooperative maneuvering system aimed at enhancing road safety and traveling efficiency at intersections for CAVs. We utilize RSUs for real-time traffic data acquisition and train an offline reinforcement learning (RL) algorithm based on human driving data. Evaluation results obtained from hardware-in-loop autonomous driving simulations show that our approach employing the twin delayed deep deterministic policy gradient and behavior cloning (TD3+BC), achieves performance comparable to state-of-the-art autonomous driving systems in terms of safety measures while significantly enhancing travel efficiency by up to 17.38% in intersection areas. This paper investigates guesswork over ordered statistics and formulates the complexity of ordered statistics decoding (OSD) in binary additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels. It first develops a new upper bound of guesswork for independent sequences, by applying the Holder's inequity to Hamming shell-based subspaces. This upper bound is then extended to the ordered statistics, by constructing the conditionally independent sequences within the ordered statistics sequences. We leverage the established bounds to formulate the best achievable decoding complexity of OSD that ensures no loss in error performance, where OSD stops immediately when the correct codeword estimate is found. We show that the average complexity of OSD at maximum decoding order can be accurately approximated by the modified Bessel function, which increases near-exponentially with code dimension. We also identify a complexity saturation threshold, where increasing the OSD decoding order beyond this threshold improves error performance without further raising decoding complexity. In addressing wireless networked control systems (WNCS) subject to unexpected packet loss and uncertainties, this paper presents a practical Model Predictive Control (MPC) based control scheme with considerations of of packet dropouts, latency, process noise and measurement noise. A discussion of the quasi-static Rayleigh fading channel is presented herein to enhance the realism of the underlying assumption in a real-world context. To achieve a desirable performance, the proposed control scheme leverages the predictive capabilities of a direct multiple shooting MPC, employs a compensation strategy to mitigate the impact of wireless channel imperfections. Instead of feeding noisy measurements into the MPC, we employ an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) to mitigate the influence of measurement noise and process disturbances. Finally, we implement the proposed MPC algorithm on a simulated Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV) and conduct a series of experiments to evaluate the performance of our control scheme across various scenarios. Through our simulation results and comparative analyses, we have substantiated the effectiveness and improvements brought about by our approach through the utilization of multiple metrics.

Mounting a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) on an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) holds promise for improving traditional terrestrial network performance. Unlike conventional methods deploying passive RIS on UAVs, this study delves into the efficacy of an aerial active RIS (AARIS). Specifically, the downlink transmission of an AARIS network is investigated, where the base station (BS) leverages rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA) for effective interference management and benefits from the support of an AARIS for jointly amplifying and reflecting the BS's transmit signals. Considering both the non-trivial energy consumption of the active RIS and the limited energy storage of the UAV, we propose an innovative element selection strategy for optimizing the on/off status of RIS elements, which adaptively and remarkably manages the system's power consumption. To this end, a resource management problem is formulated, aiming to maximize the system energy efficiency (EE) by jointly optimizing the transmit beamforming at the BS, the element activation, the phase shift and the amplification factor at the RIS, the RSMA common data rate at users, as well as the UAV's trajectory. Due to the dynamicity nature of UAV and user mobility, a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm is designed for resource allocation, utilizing meta-learning to adaptively handle fast time-varying system dynamics. Simulations indicate that incorporating an active RIS at the UAV leads to substantial EE gain, compared to passive RIS-aided UAV. We observe the superiority of the RSMA-based AARIS system in terms of EE, compared to existing approaches adopting non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA).

Network slicing (NS) is a promising technology that supports diverse requirements for next-generation low-latency wireless communication networks. However, the tampering attack is a rising issue of jeopardizing NS service-provisioning. To resist tampering attacks in NS networks, we propose a novel optimization framework for reliable NS resource allocation in a blockchain-secured low-latency wireless network, where trusted base stations (BSs) with high reputations are selected for blockchain management and NS service-provisioning. For such a blockchain-secured network, we consider that the latency is measured by the summation of blockchain management and NS service-provisioning, whilst the NS reliability is evaluated by the BS denial-of-service (DoS) probability. To satisfy the requirements of both the latency and reliability, we formulate a constrained computing resource allocation optimization problem to minimize the total processing latency subject to the BS DoS probability. To efficiently solve the optimization, we design a constrained deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithm, which satisfies both latency and DoS probability requirements by introducing an additional critic neural network. The proposed constrained DRL further solves the issue of high input dimension by incorporating feature engineering technology. In this paper, we develop a deep learning-based bandwidth allocation policy that is: 1) scalable with the number of users and 2) transferable to different communication scenarios, such as non-stationary wireless channels, different quality-of-service (QoS) requirements, and dynamically available resources. To support scalability, the bandwidth allocation policy is represented by a graph neural network (GNN), with which the number of training parameters does not change with the number of users. To enable the generalization of the GNN, we develop a hybrid-task meta-learning (HML) algorithm that trains the initial parameters of the GNN with different communication scenarios during meta-training. Next, during meta-testing, a few samples are used to fine-tune the GNN with unseen communication scenarios. Simulation results demonstrate that our HML approach can improve the initial performance by $8.79\%$, and sampling efficiency by $73\%$, compared with existing benchmarks. After fine-tuning, our near-optimal GNN-based policy can achieve close to the same reward with much lower inference complexity compared to the optimal policy obtained using iterative optimization.

This paper designs a graph neural network (GNN) to improve bandwidth allocations for multiple legitimate wireless users transmitting to a base station in the presence of an eavesdropper. To improve the privacy and prevent eavesdropping attacks, we propose a user scheduling algorithm to schedule users satisfying an instantaneous minimum secrecy rate constraint. Based on this, we optimize the bandwidth allocations with three algorithms namely iterative search (IvS), GNN-based supervised learning (GNN-SL), and GNN-based unsupervised learning (GNN-USL). We present a computational complexity analysis which shows that GNN-SL and GNN-USL can be more efficient compared to IvS which is limited by the bandwidth block size. Numerical simulation results highlight that our proposed GNN-based resource allocations can achieve a comparable sum secrecy rate compared to IvS with significantly lower computational complexity. Furthermore, we observe that the GNN approach is more robust to uncertainties in the eavesdropper's channel state information, especially compared with the best channel allocation scheme.

This paper proposes a blockchain-secured deep reinforcement learning (BC-DRL) optimization framework for {data management and} resource allocation in decentralized {wireless mobile edge computing (MEC)} networks. In our framework, {we design a low-latency reputation-based proof-of-stake (RPoS) consensus protocol to select highly reliable blockchain-enabled BSs to securely store MEC user requests and prevent data tampering attacks.} {We formulate the MEC resource allocation optimization as a constrained Markov decision process that balances minimum processing latency and denial-of-service (DoS) probability}. {We use the MEC aggregated features as the DRL input to significantly reduce the high-dimensionality input of the remaining service processing time for individual MEC requests. Our designed constrained DRL effectively attains the optimal resource allocations that are adapted to the dynamic DoS requirements. We provide extensive simulation results and analysis to} validate that our BC-DRL framework achieves higher security, reliability, and resource utilization efficiency than benchmark blockchain consensus protocols and {MEC} resource allocation algorithms.

This paper focuses on the frozen set design for precoded polar codes decoded by the successive cancellation list (SCL) algorithm. We propose a novel frozen set design method, whose computational complexity is low due to the use of analytical bounds and constrained frozen set structure. We derive new bounds based on the recently published complexity analysis of SCL decoding with near maximum-likelihood (ML) performance. To predict the ML performance, we employ the state-of-the-art bounds relying on the code weight distribution. The bounds and constrained frozen set structure are incorporated into the genetic algorithm to generate optimized frozen sets with low complexity. The connected and autonomous systems (CAS) and auto-driving era is coming into our life. To support CAS applications such as AI-driven decision-making and blockchain-based smart data management platform, data and message exchange/dissemination is a fundamental element. The distributed message broadcast and forward protocols in CAS, such as vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET), can suffer from significant message loss and uncertain transmission delay, and faulty nodes might disseminate fake messages to confuse the network. Therefore, the consensus mechanism is essential in CAS with distributed structure to guaranteed correct nodes agree on the same parameter and reach consistency. However, due to the wireless nature of CAS, traditional consensus cannot be directly deployed. This article reviews several existing consensus mechanisms, including average/maximum/minimum estimation consensus mechanisms that apply on quantity, Byzantine fault tolerance consensus for request, state machine replication (SMR) and blockchain, as well as their implementations in CAS. To deploy wireless-adapted consensus, we propose a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG)-based message structure to build a non-equivocation data dissemination protocol for CAS, which has resilience against message loss and unpredictable forwarding latency. Finally, we enhance this protocol by developing a two-dimension DAG-based strategy to achieve partial order for blockchain and total order for the distributed service model SMR.

The diffusion coefficient of heavy quarks in the deconfined medium is examined in this research using a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) trained with data from relativistic heavy ion collisions involving heavy flavor hadrons. The CNN is trained using observables such as the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of non-prompt $J/\psi$ from B-hadron decay in different centralities, where B meson evolutions are calculated using the Langevin equation and the Instantaneous Coalescence Model. The CNN outputs the parameters characterizing the temperature and momentum dependence of the heavy quark diffusion coefficient. By inputting the experimental data of non-prompt $J/\psi$ $(R_{AA}, v_2)$ from various collision centralities into multiple channels of the well-trained network, we derive the values of the diffusion coefficient parameters. Additionally, We evaluate the uncertainty in determining the diffusion coefficient by taking into account the uncertainties present in the experimental data $(R_{AA}, v_2)$, which serve as inputs to the deep neural network., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

The two-dimensional transition metal carbide/nitride family (MXenes) has garnered significant attention due to their highly customizable surface functional groups. Leveraging modern material science techniques, the customizability of MXenes can be enhanced further through the construction of associated heterostructures. As indicated by recent research, the Mo2CTx/NiS heterostructure has emerged as a promising candidate exhibiting superior physical and chemical application potential. The geometrical structure of Mo2CTx/NiS heterostructure is modeled and 6 possible configurations are validated by Density Functional Theory simulations. The variation in functional groups leads to structural changes in Mo2CTx/NiS interfaces, primarily attributed to the competition between van der Waals and covalent interactions. The presence of different functional groups results in significant band fluctuations near the Fermi level for Ni and Mo atoms, influencing the role of atoms and electron's ability to escape near the interface. This, in turn, modulates the strength of covalent interactions at the MXenes/NiS interface and alters the ease of dissociation of the MXenes/NiS complex. Notably, the Mo2CO2/NiS(P6_3/mmc) heterostructure exhibits polymorphism, signifying that two atomic arrangements can stabilize the structure. Cyclocarbon molecules are critical in understanding the carbon structure formation and the nature of the interaction between carbon atoms. In cyclocarbons, light elements such as H, O and N may interplay with rings to form doped cyclocarbon molecules. Such molecules show unique optical properties that have never been reported before. In this study, density functional theory with a tuned PBE functional (39% HF exchange) is employed to study the ground and excited states of a cyclo[18] carbon molecule (C18) and its doped variants C18M (M = H, Be, B, N, and O). The doping is shown to either make the UV-Vis spectra of C18 blue- or red-shifted depending on the spin brought by the dopant. Furthermore, introducing extra-atoms is found to cause the emergence of a new set of infrared modes in the structure under investigation. Finally, applying the molecular dynamic simulations enables one to observe the terahertz characteristics of C18M with frequencies up to 1.5 THz due to the propagation of a particular pattern along the carbon ring., Comment: 10 pages,5 figures,1 table

Geometry plays a significant role in monocular 3D object detection. It can be used to estimate object depth by using the perspective projection between object's physical size and 2D projection in the image plane, which can introduce mathematical priors into deep models. However, this projection process also introduces error amplification, where the error of the estimated height is amplified and reflected into the projected depth. It leads to unreliable depth inferences and also impairs training stability. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel Geometry Uncertainty Propagation Network (GUPNet++) by modeling geometry projection in a probabilistic manner. This ensures depth predictions are well-bounded and associated with a reasonable uncertainty. The significance of introducing such geometric uncertainty is two-fold: (1). It models the uncertainty propagation relationship of the geometry projection during training, improving the stability and efficiency of the end-to-end model learning. (2). It can be derived to a highly reliable confidence to indicate the quality of the 3D detection result, enabling more reliable detection inference. Experiments show that the proposed approach not only obtains (state-of-the-art) SOTA performance in image-based monocular 3D detection but also demonstrates superiority in efficacy with a simplified framework., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

Protein-ligand structure prediction is an essential task in drug discovery, predicting the binding interactions between small molecules (ligands) and target proteins (receptors). Recent advances have incorporated deep learning techniques to improve the accuracy of protein-ligand structure prediction. Nevertheless, the experimental validation of docking conformations remains costly, it raises concerns regarding the generalizability of these deep learning-based methods due to the limited training data. In this work, we show that by pre-training on a large-scale docking conformation generated by traditional physics-based docking tools and then fine-tuning with a limited set of experimentally validated receptor-ligand complexes, we can obtain a protein-ligand structure prediction model with outstanding performance. Specifically, this process involved the generation of 100 million docking conformations for protein-ligand pairings, an endeavor consuming roughly 1 million CPU core days. The proposed model, HelixDock, aims to acquire the physical knowledge encapsulated by the physics-based docking tools during the pre-training phase. HelixDock has been rigorously benchmarked against both physics-based and deep learning-based baselines, demonstrating its exceptional precision and robust transferability in predicting binding confirmation. In addition, our investigation reveals the scaling laws governing pre-trained protein-ligand structure prediction models, indicating a consistent enhancement in performance with increases in model parameters and the volume of pre-training data. Moreover, we applied HelixDock to several drug discovery-related tasks to validate its practical utility. HelixDock demonstrates outstanding capabilities on both cross-docking and structure-based virtual screening benchmarks.

This paper investigates the optimization of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in an integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) system. \red{To meet the demand of growing number of devices, power domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is considered. However, traditional NOMA with a large number of devices is challenging due to large decoding delay and propagation error introduced by successive interference cancellation (SIC). Thus, OMA is integrated into NOMA to support more devices}. We formulate a max-min problem to optimize the sensing beampattern \red{with constraints on communication rate}, through joint power allocation, active beamforming and RIS phase shift design. To solve the non-convex problem with a non-smooth objective function, we propose a low complexity alternating optimization (AO) algorithm, where a closed form expression for the intra-cluster power allocation (intra-CPA) is derived, and penalty and successive convex approximation (SCA) methods are used to optimize the beamforming and phase shift design. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of improving minimum beampattern gain (MBPG) compared with other baselines. Furthermore, the trade-off between sensing and communication is analyzed and demonstrated in the simulation results.

This paper established a novel multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communication network, in the presence of full-duplex (FD) transmitters and receivers with the assistance of dual-side intelligent omni surface. Compared with the traditional IOS, the dual-side IOS allows signals from both sides to reflect and refract simultaneously, which further exploits the potential of metasurfaces to avoid frequency dependence, and size, weight, and power (SWaP) limitations. By considering both the downlink and uplink transmissions, we aim to maximize the weighted sum rate, subject to the transmit power constraints of the transmitter and the users and the dual-side reflecting and refracting phase shifts constraints. However, the formulated sum rate maximization problem is not convex, hence we exploit the weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) approach, and tackle the original problem iteratively by solving two sub-problems. For the beamforming matrices optimizations of the downlink and uplink, we resort to the Lagrangian dual method combined with a bisection search to obtain the results. Furthermore, we resort to the quadratically constrained quadratic programming (QCQP) method to optimize the reflecting and refracting phase shifts of both sides of the IOS. In addition, we introduce the case without a dual-side IOS for comparison. Simulation results validate the efficacy of the proposed algorithm and demonstrate the superiority of the dual-side IOS.

As an emerging concept, the Metaverse has the potential to revolutionize the social interaction in the post-pandemic era by establishing a digital world for online education, remote healthcare, immersive business, intelligent transportation, and advanced manufacturing. The goal is ambitious, yet the methodologies and technologies to achieve the full vision of the Metaverse remain unclear. In this paper, we first introduce the three infrastructure pillars that lay the foundation of the Metaverse, i.e., human-computer interfaces, sensing and communication systems, and network architectures. Then, we depict the roadmap towards the Metaverse that consists of four stages with different applications. To support diverse applications in the Metaverse, we put forward a novel design methodology: task-oriented design, and further review the challenges and the potential solutions. Generative AI (GAI) models have been rapidly advancing, with a wide range of applications including intelligent networks and mobile AI-generated content (AIGC) services. Despite their numerous applications and potential, such models create opportunities for novel security challenges. In this paper, we examine the challenges and opportunities of GAI in the realm of the security of intelligent network AIGC services such as suggesting security policies, acting as both a ``spear'' for potential attacks and a ``shield'' as an integral part of various defense mechanisms. First, we present a comprehensive overview of the GAI landscape, highlighting its applications and the techniques underpinning these advancements, especially large language and diffusion models. Then, we investigate the dynamic interplay between GAI's spear and shield roles, highlighting two primary categories of potential GAI-related attacks and their respective defense strategies within wireless networks. A case study illustrates the impact of GAI defense strategies on energy consumption in an image request scenario under data poisoning attack. Our results show that by employing an AI-optimized diffusion defense mechanism, energy can be reduced by 8.7%, and retransmission count can be decreased from 32 images, without defense, to just 6 images, showcasing the effectiveness of GAI in enhancing network security.

In this paper, we propose an efficient decoding algorithm for short low-density parity check (LDPC) codes by carefully combining the belief propagation (BP) decoding and order statistic decoding (OSD) algorithms. Specifically, a modified BP (mBP) algorithm is applied for a certain number of iterations prior to OSD to enhance the reliability of the received message, where an offset parameter is utilized in mBP to control the weight of the extrinsic information in message passing. By carefully selecting the offset parameter and the number of mBP iterations, the number of errors in the most reliable positions (MRPs) in OSD can be reduced by mBP, thereby significantly improving the overall decoding performance of error rate and complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can approach the maximum-likelihood decoding (MLD) for short LDPC codes with only a slight increase in complexity compared to BP and a significant decrease compared to OSD. Specifically, the order-(m-1) decoding of the proposed algorithm can achieve the performance of the order-m OSD.

For cyber-physical systems in the 6G era, semantic communications connecting distributed devices for dynamic control and remote state estimation are required to guarantee application-level performance, not merely focus on communication-centric performance. Semantics here is a measure of the usefulness of information transmissions. Semantic-aware transmission scheduling of a large system often involves a large decision-making space, and the optimal policy cannot be obtained by existing algorithms effectively. In this paper, we first investigate the fundamental properties of the optimal semantic-aware scheduling policy and then develop advanced deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms by leveraging the theoretical guidelines. Complicated S-Au interaction patterns in thiolate-protected gold nanoclusters (TP-AuNCs) are important in the formation of versatility among clusters. In this study, the ELFnet, a novel convolutional neural network (CNN) model is trained and tested to bridge the electron localization function (ELF) images and the bond lengths. As believed to be a successful bond describer, a dataset of 3959 ELF images is obtained out of Density Functional Theory (DFT) simulations, followed by a series of model architecture and hyperparameter exploration. The ELFnet with its best performance shows its correct feature extraction ability to gain insights in the prediction of bond lengths. Besides, the ELFnet also possess 3 different "ELF reading modes" which inspires other possibilities in understanding ELF images. The ELFnet serves as an "ELF-ruler" to give precise bond type labels (or the predicted bond lengths). Such ELF-ruler measured bond types represent a particular bond when distorted by external factors with a quantitative indicator. With the help of such an ELF-ruler, the classification of chemical bonds in general may be extended to more precise types.

Although developing artificial enzymes has made great progress, there is still a gap between artificial enzymes and natural enzymes in catalytic performance. Designing and constructing efficient artificial biocatalysts is extremely desirable because of their high stability, low cost and easy storage. Here, we report a synthesized amino-functionalized graphene quantum dots-based manganese single atom catalyst (SAC) Mn-N4, which exhibits POD-, CAT, SOD-like activities, especially the superior SOD-like activity. Recent studies have reported Mn-based SAzymes, however, the multi-enzyme mimicking catalytic mechanisms for Mn-N4 are not comprehensive and in-depth enough. Therefore, we combine density functional theory (DFT) calculations and machine learning (ML) to validate the performance of the multi-enzyme mimicking activities. The DFT simulations show that Mn-N4 owns a highly effective SOD in the "one-side adsorption" with a very low energy barrier of 0.077 eV, which can be attributed to variation of the preferred spin states of Mn-O2.- system and its "spin flip-collection lock" in the SOD-like catalytic procedure. Furthermore, spin related charge distributions on Mn-N4 configurations by machine learning (ML) analysis suggest that the pattern of spin and natural charge/valence electron distribution will exhibit similarity in the structures of multiple intermediate steps of multi-enzyme mimicking activities. This work not only puts forward the catalytic mechanisms of Mn-N4 SAzymes, but also provides essential guidance for future design of highly performance artificial enzymes.

Grant-free random access is promising for massive connectivity with sporadic transmissions in massive machine type communications (mMTC), where the hand-shaking between the access point (AP) and users is skipped, leading to high access efficiency. In grant-free random access, the AP needs to identify the active users and perform channel estimation and signal detection. Conventionally, pilot signals are required for the AP to achieve user activity detection and channel estimation before active user signal detection, which may still result in substantial overhead and latency. In this paper, to further reduce the overhead and latency, we explore the problem of grant-free random access without the use of pilot signals in a millimeter wave (mmWave) multiple input and multiple output (MIMO) system, where the AP performs blind joint user activity detection, channel estimation and signal detection (UACESD). We show that the blind joint UACESD can be formulated as a constrained composite matrix factorization problem, which can be solved by exploiting the structures of the channel matrix and signal matrix. Leveraging our recently developed unitary approximate message passing based matrix factorization (UAMP-MF) algorithm, we design a message passing based Bayesian algorithm to solve the blind joint UACESD problem. Extensive simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the blind grant-free random access scheme.

Remote state estimation of large-scale distributed dynamic processes plays an important role in Industry 4.0 applications. In this paper, we focus on the transmission scheduling problem of a remote estimation system. First, we derive some structural properties of the optimal sensor scheduling policy over fading channels. Then, building on these theoretical guidelines, we develop a structure-enhanced deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework for optimal scheduling of the system to achieve the minimum overall estimation mean-square error (MSE). In particular, we propose a structure-enhanced action selection method, which tends to select actions that obey the policy structure. This explores the action space more effectively and enhances the learning efficiency of DRL agents. Furthermore, we introduce a structure-enhanced loss function to add penalties to actions that do not follow the policy structure. The new loss function guides the DRL to converge to the optimal policy structure quickly. Our numerical experiments illustrate that the proposed structure-enhanced DRL algorithms can save the training time by 50% and reduce the remote estimation MSE by 10% to 25% when compared to benchmark DRL algorithms. In addition, we show that the derived structural properties exist in a wide range of dynamic scheduling problems that go beyond remote state estimation., Comment: Paper submitted to IEEE. Rate-Splitting Multiple Access (RSMA) has recently found favour in the multi-antenna-aided wireless downlink, as a benefit of relaxing the accuracy of Channel State Information at the Transmitter (CSIT), while in achieving high spectral efficiency and providing security guarantees. These benefits are particularly important in high-velocity vehicular platoons since their high Doppler affects the estimation accuracy of the CSIT. To tackle this challenge, we propose an RSMA-based Internet of Vehicles (IoV) solution that jointly considers platoon control and FEderated Edge Learning (FEEL) in the downlink. Specifically, the proposed framework is designed for transmitting the unicast control messages within the IoV platoon, as well as for privacy-preserving FEEL-aided downlink Non-Orthogonal Unicasting and Multicasting (NOUM). Given this sophisticated framework, a multi-objective optimization problem is formulated to minimize both the latency of the FEEL downlink and the deviation of the vehicles within the platoon. To efficiently solve this problem, a Block Coordinate Descent (BCD) framework is developed for decoupling the main multi-objective problem into two sub-problems. Then, for solving these non-convex sub-problems, a Successive Convex Approximation (SCA) and Model Predictive Control (MPC) method is developed for solving the FEEL-based downlink problem and platoon control problem, respectively. Our simulation results show that the proposed RSMA-based IoV system outperforms the conventional systems.

In this work, we propose a novel decoding algorithm for short block codes based on an edge-weighted graph neural network (EW-GNN). The EW-GNN decoder operates on the Tanner graph with an iterative message-passing structure, which algorithmically aligns with the conventional belief propagation (BP) decoding method. In each iteration, the "weight" on the message passed along each edge is obtained from a fully connected neural network that has the reliability information from nodes/edges as its input. Compared to existing deep-learning-based decoding schemes, the EW-GNN decoder is characterised by its scalability, meaning that 1) the number of trainable parameters is independent of the codeword length, and 2) an EW-GNN decoder trained with shorter/simple codes can be directly used for longer/sophisticated codes of different code rates. In this paper, we investigate signal detection in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems with hardware impairments, such as power amplifier nonlinearity and in-phase/quadrature imbalance. To deal with the complex combined effects of hardware imperfections, neural network (NN) techniques, in particular deep neural networks (DNNs), have been studied to directly compensate for the impact of hardware impairments. However, it is difficult to train a DNN with limited pilot signals, hindering its practical applications. In this work, we investigate how to achieve efficient Bayesian signal detection in MIMO systems with hardware imperfections. Characterizing combined hardware imperfections often leads to complicated signal models, making Bayesian signal detection challenging. To address this issue, we first train an NN to "model" the MIMO system with hardware imperfections and then perform Bayesian inference based on the trained NN. Modelling the MIMO system with NN enables the design of NN architectures based on the signal flow of the MIMO system, minimizing the number of NN layers and parameters, which is crucial to achieving efficient training with limited pilot signals. We then represent the trained NN with a factor graph, and design an efficient message passing based Bayesian signal detector, leveraging the unitary approximate message passing (UAMP) algorithm. The implementation of a turbo receiver with the proposed Bayesian detector is also investigated. Extensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed technique delivers remarkably better performance than state-of-the-art methods.

Wireless networked control system (WNCS) connecting sensors, controllers, and actuators via wireless communications is a key enabling technology for highly scalable and low-cost deployment of control systems in the Industry 4.0 era. Despite the tight interaction of control and communications in WNCSs, most existing works adopt separative design approaches. This is mainly because the co-design of control-communication policies requires large and hybrid state and action spaces, making the optimal problem mathematically intractable and difficult to be solved effectively by classic algorithms. In this paper, we systematically investigate deep learning (DL)-based estimator-control-scheduler co-design for a model-unknown nonlinear WNCS over wireless fading channels. In particular, we propose a co-design framework with the awareness of the sensor's age-of-information (AoI) states and dynamic channel states. We propose a novel deep reinforcement learning (DRL)-based algorithm for controller and scheduler optimization utilizing both model-free and model-based data. An AoI-based importance sampling algorithm that takes into account the data accuracy is proposed for enhancing learning efficiency. We also develop novel schemes for enhancing the stability of joint training. Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed joint training algorithm can effectively solve the estimation-control-scheduling co-design problem in various scenarios and provide significant performance gain compared to separative design and some benchmark policies., Comment: This work has been submitted to the IEEE for possible publication. To achieve reliable and efficient transmissions in free-space optical (FSO) communication, this paper designs a new protograph low-density parity-check (PLDPC) coded generalized spatial multipulse position modulation (GSMPPM) system over weak turbulence channels. Specifically, we investigate the PLDPC code, generalized space shift keying (GSSK) modulation, and MPPM constellation. First, we propose a type of novel GSMPPM constellations that intelligently integrates the GSSK into MPPM, referred to as asymmetric dual-mode (ADM) constellations, so as to improve the performance of the PLDPC-coded GSMPPM system. Furthermore, exploiting a protograph extrinsic information transfer (PEXIT) algorithm, we construct a type of improved PLDPC code, referred to as I-PLDPC code, which outperforms the existing PLDPC codes over weak turbulence channels. Analytical and simulation results show that the proposed ADM constellations and the proposed I-PLDPC code can obtain noticeable performance gains over their counterparts. We consider matrix factorization (MF) with certain constraints, which finds wide applications in various areas. Leveraging variational inference (VI) and unitary approximate message passing (UAMP), we develop a Bayesian approach to MF with an efficient message passing implementation, called UAMPMF. With proper priors imposed on the factor matrices, UAMPMF can be used to solve many problems that can be formulated as MF, such as non negative matrix factorization, dictionary learning, compressive sensing with matrix uncertainty, robust principal component analysis, and sparse matrix factorization. Extensive numerical examples are provided to show that UAMPMF significantly outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in terms of recovery accuracy, robustness and computational complexity., Comment: Submitted for possible publication

In this paper, we propose an efficient ordered-statistics decoding (OSD) algorithm with an adaptive Gaussian elimination (GE) reduction technique. The proposed decoder utilizes two decoding conditions to adaptively remove GE in OSD. The first condition determines whether GE could be skipped in the OSD process by estimating the decoding error probability. Then, the second condition is utilized to identify the correct decoding result during the decoding process without GE. The proposed decoder can break the ``complexity floor'' in OSD decoders introduced by the GE overhead. Simulation results advise that when compared with the latest schemes in the literature, the proposed approach can significantly reduce the decoding complexity at high SNRs without any degradation in the error-correction capability., Comment: 5 figs, 6 pages

This paper reviews the potential channel decoding techniques for ultra-reliable low-latency communications (URLLC). URLLC is renowned for its stringent requirements including ultra-reliability, low end-to-end transmission latency, and packet-size flexibility. These requirements exacerbate the difficulty of the physical-layer design, particularly for the channel coding and decoding schemes. To satisfy the requirements of URLLC, decoders must exhibit superior error-rate performance \black{and} low decoding complexity. \black{Also, it is desired that decoders be universal} to accommodate various coding schemes. This paper provides a comprehensive review and comparison of different candidate decoding techniques for URLLC in terms of their error-rate performance and computational complexity for structured and random short codes.
