The capture of changes in dynamic systems, especially ordinary differential equations (ODEs), is an important and challenging task, with multiple applications in biomedical research and other scientific areas. This article proposes a fast and mathematically rigorous online method, called ODE-informed MAnifold-constrained Gaussian process Inference for Change point detection(O-MAGIC), to detect changes of parameters in the ODE system using noisy and sparse observation data. O-MAGIC imposes a Gaussian process prior to the time series of system components with a latent manifold constraint, induced by restricting the derivative process to satisfy ODE conditions. To detect the parameter changes from the observation, we propose a procedure based on a two-sample generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) test that can detect multiple change points in the dynamic system automatically. O-MAGIC bypasses conventional numerical integration and achieves substantial savings in computation time. By incorporating the ODE structures through manifold constraints, O-MAGIC enjoys a significant advantage in detection delay, while following principled statistical construction under the Bayesian paradigm, which further enables it to handle systems with missing data or unobserved components. O-MAGIC can also be applied to general nonlinear systems. Simulation studies on three challenging examples: SEIRD model, Lotka-Volterra model and Lorenz model are provided to illustrate the robustness and efficiency of O-MAGIC, compared with numerical integration and other popular time-series-based change point detection benchmark methods.

Classifier models are prevalent in natural language processing (NLP), often with high accuracy. Yet in real world settings, human-in-the-loop systems can foster trust in model outputs and even higher performance. Selective Prediction (SP) methods determine when to adopt a classifier's output versus defer to a human. Previous SP approaches have addressed how to improve softmax as a measure of model confidence, or have developed separate confidence estimators. One previous method involves learning a deferral model based on engineered features. We introduce a novel joint-training approach that simultaneously optimizes learned representations used by the classifier module and a learned deferral policy. Our results on four classification tasks demonstrate that joint training not only leads to better SP outcomes over two strong baselines, but also improves the performance of both modules.

Computational capability often falls short when confronted with massive data, posing a common challenge in establishing a statistical model or statistical inference method dealing with big data. While subsampling techniques have been extensively developed to downsize the data volume, there is a notable gap in addressing the unique challenge of handling extensive reliability data, in which a common situation is that a large proportion of data is censored. In this article, we propose an efficient subsampling method for reliability analysis in the presence of censoring data, intending to estimate the parameters of lifetime distribution. Moreover, a novel subsampling method for subsampling from severely censored data is proposed, i.e., only a tiny proportion of data is complete. The subsampling-based estimators are given, and their asymptotic properties are derived. The optimal subsampling probabilities are derived through the L-optimality criterion, which minimizes the trace of the product of the asymptotic covariance matrix and a constant matrix. Efficient algorithms are proposed to implement the proposed subsampling methods to address the challenge that optimal subsampling strategy depends on unknown parameter estimation from full data. The prevalent high intrinsic absorption in the crystalline state of phase-change materials (PCMs), typically leads to a decline in modulation efficiency for phase-change metasurfaces, underutilizing their potential for quasi-continuous phase-state tuning. This research introduces a concise design approach that maximizes the exploitation of the quasi-continuous phase transition properties of PCM, achieving high-efficiency spatial light modulation. By optimizing the metasurface design, the phase modulation process is strategically localized in a low crystallization ratio state, significantly reducing the impact of material absorption on modulation efficiency. Utilizing GSST as an example, numerical simulations demonstrate a minimum reflectance of 46.5% at the target wavelength of 1550 nm, with a phase modulation depth of 246.6{\deg}. The design is fruther extended to dynamic polarization modulation by incorporating structural anisotropy, enabling independent control of amplitude and phase modulation in orthogonal polarization directions. This strategy not only circumvents the efficiency limitations of crystalline states but also harnesses the full potential of PCMs for multifunctional photonic applications.

Chalcogenide material-based integrated photonic devices have garnered widespread attention due to their unique wideband transparency. Despite their recognized CMOS compatibility, the fabrication of these devices relies predominantly on lithography techniques. However, chalcogenide thin films are highly susceptible to oxidation, necessitating customized process flows and complex protective measures during lithography. These requirements are hardly compatible with current commercial CMOS manufacturing platforms designed for silicon photonics, significantly limiting the practical applications of chalcogenide photonic devices. In this work, we ingeniously exploit the ease of oxidation of chalcogenide materials, presenting a novel laser-induced localized oxidation technique for spatial patterning on chalcogenide thin films, enabling concise lithography-free fabrication of chalcogenide integrated photonic devices. Using Sb2S3 as an example, we experimentally demonstrate localized multi-level oxidation with a sizable overall refractive index contrast of 0.7 at near-infrared, featuring a high spatial resolution of 0.6 um. Based on this technique, multiple integrated photonic devices are demonstrated, showing versatile functionalities, including color printing at visible and metasurface-based spatial light modulation at near-infrared regions. Leveraging the inherent phase-change property of Sb2S3, an active Fresnel zone plate, enabling switchable beam focusing, is further demonstrated, indicating the feasibility of concise fabrication of active photonic devices. Our work offers a brand-new modulation dimension for chalcogenide materials and provides a significantly simplified approach for realizing chalcogenide-integrated photonic devices.

Highly efficient acousto-optic modulation plays a vital role in the microwave-to-optical conversion. Herein, we demonstrate a hybrid thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) racetrack micro-ring acousto-optic modulator (AOM) implemented with low-loss chalcogenide (ChG) waveguide. By engineering the electrode configuration of the interdigital transducer, the double-arm micro-ring acousto-optic modulation is experimentally confirmed in nonsuspended ChG loaded TFLN waveguide platform. Varying the position of blue-detuned bias point, the half-wave-voltage-length product VpaiL of the hybrid TFLN micro-ring AOM is as small as 9 mVcm. Accordingly, the acousto-optic coupling strength is estimated to be 0.48 Hz s1/2 at acoustic frequency of 0.84 GHz. By analyzing the generation of phonon number from the piezoelectric transducer, the microwave-to-optical conversion efficiency is calculated to be 0.05%, approximately one order of magnitude larger than that of the state-of-the-art suspended counterpart. Efficient microwave-to-optical conversion thus provides new opportunities for low-power-consumption quantum information transduction using the TFLN-ChG hybrid piezo-optomechanical devices.

Self-homodyne coherentsystem exhibits its potential to reduce the power consumption ofthe receiver-side digital signal processing (Rx-DSP) by deliveringthe local oscillator (LO) from the transmitter. However, anautomatic polarization controller (APC) is inevitable in the remoteLO link to avoid polarization fading, resulting in additional costsTo address the polarization fading issue, a simplified self.homodyne coherent system is proposed enabled by Alamouticoding in this paper. Benefiting from the Alamouti coding betweentwo polarizations, a polarization-insensitive receiver onlyincluding a 3dB coupler, a 90o Hybrid, and two balancedphotodiodes (BPDs)is sufficient for reception. Meanwhile, theAPC in the LO link is needless, simplifying the receiver structuresignificantly. Besides, the digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM)technique is also adopted to relax the computational complexity ofthe chromatic dispersion compensation (CDC), which is one of thedominant power consumption modules in Rx-DSP. The security issues of passive optical networks (PONs) have always been a concern due to broadcast transmission. Physical-layer security enhancement for the coherent PON should be as significant as improving transmission performance. In this paper, we propose the advanced encryption standard (AES) algorithm and geometric constellation shaping four-level pulse amplitude modulation (GCS-PAM4) pilot-based key distribution for secure coherent PON. The first bit of the GCS-PAM4 pilot is used for the hardware-efficient carrier phase recovery (CPR), while the second bit is utilized for key distribution without occupying the additional overhead. The key bits are encoded by the polar code to ensure error-free distribution. Frequent key updates are permitted for every codeword to improve the security of coherent PON. The experimental results of the 200-Gbps secure coherent PON using digital subcarrier multiplexing with 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation show that the GCS-PAM4 pilot-based key distribution could be error-free at upstream transmission without occupying the additional overhead and the eavesdropping would be prevented by AES algorithm at downstream transmission. Point-to-multi-point (PtMP) optical networks become the main solutions for network-edge applications such as passive optical networks and radio access networks. Entropy-loading digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) is the core technology to achieve low latency and approach high capacity for flexible PtMP optical networks. However, the high peak-to-average power ratio of the entropy-loading DSCM signal limits the power budget and restricts the capacity, which can be reduced effectively by clipping operation. In this paper, we derive the theoretical capacity limitation of the flexible PtMP optical networks based on the entropy-loading DSCM signal. Meanwhile, an optimal clipping ratio for the clipping operation is acquired to approach the highest capacity limitation. Based on an accurate clipping-noise model under the optimal clipping ratio, we establish a three-dimensional look-up table for bit-error ratio, spectral efficiency, and link loss. Based on the three-dimensional look-up table, an optimization strategy is proposed to acquire optimal spectral efficiencies for achieving a higher capacity of the flexible PtMP optical networks., Comment: The paper has been submitted to the IEEE Transactions on Communications

We propose a method named AudioFormer,which learns audio feature representations through the acquisition of discrete acoustic codes and subsequently fine-tunes them for audio classification tasks. Initially,we introduce a novel perspective by considering the audio classification task as a form of natural language understanding (NLU). Leveraging an existing neural audio codec model,we generate discrete acoustic codes and utilize them to train a masked language model (MLM),thereby obtaining audio feature representations. Furthermore,we pioneer the integration of a Multi-Positive sample Contrastive (MPC) learning approach. This method enables the learning of joint representations among multiple discrete acoustic codes within the same audio input. In our experiments,we treat discrete acoustic codes as textual data and train a masked language model using a cloze-like methodology,ultimately deriving high-quality audio representations. Notably,the MPC learning technique effectively captures collaborative representations among distinct positive samples. Our research outcomes demonstrate that AudioFormer attains significantly improved performance compared to prevailing monomodal audio classification models across multiple datasets,and even outperforms audio-visual multimodal classification models on select datasets. Specifically,our approach achieves remarkable results on datasets including AudioSet (2M,20K),and FSD50K,with performance scores of 53.9,45.1,and 65.6,respectively. Beyond 100G passive optical networks (PONs) will be required to meet the ever-increasing traffic demand in the future. Coherent optical technologies are the competitive solutions for the future beyond 100G PON but also face challenges such as the high computational complexity of digital signal processing (DSP). A high oversampling rate in coherent optical technologies results in the high computational complexity of DSP. Therefore, DSP running in a non-integer-oversampling below 2 samples-per-symbol (sps) is preferred, which can not only reduce computational complexity but also obviously lower the requirement for the analog-to-digital converter. In this paper, we propose a non-integer-oversampling DSP for meeting the requirements of coherent PON. The proposed DSP working at 9/8-sps and 5/4-sps oversampling rates can be reduced by 44.04% and 40.78% computational complexity compared to that working at the 2-sps oversampling rate, respectively. Moreover, a 400-Gb/s-net-rate coherent PON based on digital subcarrier multiplexing was demonstrated to verify the feasibility of the non-integer-oversampling DSP. There is almost no penalty on the receiver sensitivity when the non-integer-oversampling DSP is adopted. The capacity and capacity-achieving distribution for intensity-modulation and direct-detection (IM-DD) fiber-optic channels is theoretically investigated. Different from coherent fiber-optic channels, we indicate that the capacity-achieving distribution of IM-DD systems should be discussed separately in two cases: 1) IM-DD systems without optical amplifier, which are constrained in peak power; 2) IM-DD systems with optical amplifier, which are the average power constraint (APC) system. For the two models, the maximum mutual information achieving distribution, instead of the maximum input entropy achieving distribution, is numerically computed by the iterative Blahut-Arimoto (BA) algorithm. For the IM-DD system under peak power constraint (PPC), a dynamic-assignment BA algorithm is applied to find the capacity-achieving distribution with minimum cardinality. It is observed that the maximum difference between the minimum input cardinality and capacity is around 0.8 bits. For a fixed support input cardinality, although the observed shaping gain is small and only appears in low peak-signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) regions in the PPC IM-DD system, the probabilistic shaping technique can also be used to introduce rate adaptation to the system by adjusting the shaping and FEC overheads since the capacity-achieving distribution is symmetric. In the IM-DD system under APC, a modified BA algorithm is investigated to solve for the capacity and capacity-achieving distribution, and a significant shaping gain is observed. For PAM8 and PAM16 modulation formats, 0.294 bits/symbol and 0.531 bits/symbol shaping gain can be obtained at the SNR of 20dB. Furthermore, since the capacity-achieving distribution is asymmetric in this case, a practical discussion of the PS technique is also presented.

Because of the widespread existence of noise and data corruption, recovering the true regression parameters with a certain proportion of corrupted response variables is an essential task. Methods to overcome this problem often involve robust least-squares regression, but few methods perform well when confronted with severe adaptive adversarial attacks. In many applications, prior knowledge is often available from historical data or engineering experience, and by incorporating prior information into a robust regression method, we develop an effective robust regression method that can resist adaptive adversarial attacks. First, we propose the novel TRIP (hard Thresholding approach to Robust regression with sImple Prior) algorithm, which improves the breakdown point when facing adaptive adversarial attacks. Then, to improve the robustness and reduce the estimation error caused by the inclusion of priors, we use the idea of Bayesian reweighting to construct the more robust BRHT (robust Bayesian Reweighting regression via Hard Thresholding) algorithm. We prove the theoretical convergence of the proposed algorithms under mild conditions, and extensive experiments show that under different types of dataset attacks, our algorithms outperform other benchmark ones. Finally, we apply our methods to a data-recovery problem in a real-world application involving a space solar array, demonstrating their good applicability., Comment: 22 pages

Partial differential equations (PDEs) are widely used for the description of physical and engineering phenomena. Some key parameters involved in PDEs, which represent certain physical properties with important scientific interpretations, are difficult or even impossible to measure directly. Estimating these parameters from noisy and sparse experimental data of related physical quantities is an important task. Many methods for PDE parameter inference involve a large number of evaluations for numerical solutions to PDE through algorithms such as the finite element method, which can be time-consuming, especially for nonlinear PDEs. In this paper, we propose a novel method for the inference of unknown parameters in PDEs, called the PDE-Informed Gaussian Process (PIGP) based parameter inference method. Through modeling the PDE solution as a Gaussian process (GP), we derive the manifold constraints induced by the (linear) PDE structure such that, under the constraints, the GP satisfies the PDE. For nonlinear PDEs, we propose an augmentation method that transforms the nonlinear PDE into an equivalent PDE system linear in all derivatives, which our PIGP-based method can handle. The proposed method can be applied to a broad spectrum of nonlinear PDEs. The PIGP-based method can be applied to multi-dimensional PDE systems and PDE systems with unobserved components. Like conventional Bayesian approaches, the method can provide uncertainty quantification for both the unknown parameters and the PDE solution. The PIGP-based method also completely bypasses the numerical solver for PDEs. The proposed method is demonstrated through several application examples from different areas.

Broadband Kerr combs with a flat comb spectral profile are expected in a number of applications, such as high-capacity optical communication. Here, we propose novel concentric dual-ring microresonators (DRMs) for advanced dispersion engineering to tailor the comb spectral profile. The dispersion can be flexibly engineered not only by the cross-section of the DRMs, but also by the gap between concentric dual-ring microresonators, which provides a new path to geometrically control the spectral profile of the soliton Kerr combs. An octave-spanning dissipative Kerr soliton comb with superior spectral flatness has been achieved numerically, covering from the telecommunication band to the mid-infrared (MIR) band region with a -40 dB bandwidth of 1265 nm (99.82 THz). Our results are promising to fully understand the nonlinear dynamics in hybrid modes in DRMs, which helps control broadband comb formation., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Timing recovery is critical for synchronizing the clocks at the transmitting and receiving ends of a digital coherent communication system. The core of timing recovery is to determine reliably the current sampling error of the local digitizer so that the timing circuit may lock to a stable operation point. Conventional timing phase detectors need to adapt to the optical fiber channel so that the common effects of this channel, such as chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD), on the timing phase extraction must be understood. Here we exploit the cyclostationarity of the optical signal and derive a model for studying the CD and PMD effect. We prove that the CD-adjusted cyclic correlation matrix contains full information about timing and PMD, and the determinant of the matrix is a timing phase detector immune to both CD and PMD. We also obtain other results such as a completely PMD-independent CD estimator, etc. Our analysis is supported by both simulations and experiments over a field implemented optical cable.

Dynamic polarization control (DPC) is beneficial for many optical applications. It uses adjustable waveplates to perform automatic polarization tracking and manipulation. Efficient algorithms are essential to realizing an endless polarization control process at high speed. However, the standard gradientbased algorithm is not well analyzed. Here we model the DPC with a Jacobian-based control theory framework that finds a lot in common with robot kinematics. We then give a detailed analysis of the condition of the Stokes vector gradient as a Jacobian matrix. We identify the multi-stage DPC as a redundant system enabling control algorithms with null-space operations. An efficient, reset-free algorithm can be found. We anticipate more customized DPC algorithms to follow the same framework in various optical systems.

Research suggests "write-to-learn" tasks improve learning outcomes, yet constructed-response methods of formative assessment become unwieldy with large class sizes. This study evaluates natural language processing algorithms to assist this aim. Six short-answer tasks completed by 1,935 students were scored by several human raters, using a detailed rubric, and an algorithm. Results indicate substantial inter-rater agreement using quadratic weighted kappa for rater pairs (each QWK > 0.74) and group consensus (Fleiss Kappa = 0.68). Additionally, intra-rater agreement was estimated for one rater who had scored 178 responses seven years prior (QWK = 0.89). With compelling rater agreement, the study then pilots cluster analysis of response text toward enabling instructors to ascribe meaning to clusters as a means for scalable formative assessment., Comment: 6 pages
