However, its role in regulating metabolic processes, inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance in STZ-induced T2DM remains unclear. Hence, a comprehensive understanding of how oltipraz ameliorates diabetes, particularly inflammation and oxidative stress, is imperative.Methods: The negative control (NC), T2DM model (T2DM), and T2DM models treated with oltipraz (OLTI) and metformin (MET) were constructed. The RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) was performed on the pancreatic tissues. H&E staining was conducted on the liver and pancreatic tissues. The intraperitoneal glucose tolerance test (IPGTT), blood glucose and lipids, inflammatory factors, and oxidative stress indexes were measured. qPCR and Western blotting examined the nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (Nrf2)/ hemoglobin-1 (HO-1) signaling pathway, cell apoptosis-related genes, and Reg3g levels. Immunofluorescence (IF) analysis of the pancreas was performed to measure insulin secretion.Results: A total of 256 DEGs were identified in OLTI_vs_T2DM, and they were mainly enriched in circadian rhythm, cAMP, AMPK, insulin, and MAPK signaling pathways. Moreover, Reg3g exhibits reduced expression in T2DM_vs_NC, and elevated expression in OLTI_vs_T2DM, yet remains unchanged in MET_vs_T2DM. OLTI reduced fasting blood glucose and alleviated T2DM-induced weight loss. It improved blood glucose and insulin resistance, decreased blood lipid metabolism, reduced inflammation and oxidative stress through the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway, mitigated pancreatic and liver tissue injury, and enhanced pancreatic β-cell insulin secretion. OLTI exhibited anti-apoptosis effects in T2DM. Moreover, OLTI exhibits superior antioxidant activity than metformin.Conclusion: In summary, OLTI improves blood glucose and insulin resistance, decreases blood lipid metabolism, reduces inflammation and apoptosis, suppresses oxidative stress through the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway, mitigates pancreatic and liver tissue injury, and enhances pancreatic β-cell insulin secretion, thereby mitigating T2DM symptoms. The study investigated the effects of violin note B7 (Violin), double bass note E1 (Bass) and Mozart’s Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major, K. 448 (Mozart), on laying hens in terms of the production performance, egg quality and physiological characteristics. Metasurfaces have recently opened up applications in the quantum regime, including quantum tomography and the generation of quantum entangled states. With their capability to store a vast amount of information by utilizing the various geometric degrees of freedom of nanostructures, metasurfaces are expected to be useful for processing quantum information. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a programmable metasurface capable of performing quantum algorithms using both classical and quantum light with single photons. Our approach encodes multiple programmable quantum algorithms and operations, such as Grover’s search algorithm and the quantum Fourier transform, onto the same metalens array on a metasurface. A spatial light modulator selectively excites different sets of metalenses to carry out the quantum algorithms, while the interference patterns captured by a single-photon camera are used to extract information about the output state at the selected output directions. Our programmable quantum metasurface approach holds promising potential as a cost-effective means of miniaturizing components for quantum computing and information processing.

This study investigated the effect of Phyllanthus emblica leaves and branches mixture (PE) on growth performance, oxidative status and intestinal characteristics in broilers, as well as the in vitro antioxidant potential of PE extract (PEE). As the result of in vitro evaluation, the PEE had a total phenolic compound content of 95.5 ± 2.75 mg of Gallic acid equivalent/g dry weight (DW), and a total flavonoid content of 3.04 ± 0.06 mg of quercetin equivalent/g DW. The PEE exhibited significant antioxidant activity through various mechanisms, including chelation of ferrous iron, reducing power, scavenging 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals, inhibition of liposome peroxidation and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). A total of 320 Ross 308 broilers were randomly allocated into four groups: control, basal diet supplemented with 0.5%, 1%, 2% PE. Each group was fed for 35 d. The results showed that the group fed with 0.5% PE had significantly better weight gain, and improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) compared to the control group. Moreover, each PE group significantly reduced coliform and Clostridium perfringens in the ileum and caecum. Additionally, PE group with 0.5% concentration had significantly higher villus height in the jejunum compared to the other group. Furthermore, compared to the control group, each PE group had significantly lower levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and higher levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in the serum. In the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of chickens, each PE group showed significantly higher mRNA levels of antioxidant-regulated genes, including Nrf2, GST, GCLC, SOD1 and HO-1. In contrast, the expression levels of NOX1 and ROMO1 genes were significantly lower. In conclusion, the inclusion of 0.5% PE in the basal diet could have a positive impact on the growth performance of broilers by modulating intestinal characteristics and oxidative status.

Two-photon interference is an important effect that is tightly related to the quantum nature of light. Recently, it has been shown that the photon bunching from the Hong–Ou–Mandel (HOM) effect can be used for quantum imaging in which sample properties (reflection/transmission amplitude, phase delay, or polarization) can be characterized at the pixel-by-pixel level. In this work, we perform Jones matrix imaging for an unknown object based on two-photon interference. By using a reference metasurface with panels of known polarization responses in pairwise coincidence measurements, the object’s polarization responses at each pixel can be retrieved from the dependence of the coincidence visibility as a function of the reference polarization. The post-selection of coincidence images with specific reference polarization in our approach eliminates the need in switching the incident polarization and thus parallelized optical measurements for Jones matrix characterization. The parallelization in preparing input states, prevalent in any quantum algorithms, is an advantage of adopting two-photon interference in Jones matrix imaging. We believe our work points to the usage of metasurfaces in biological and medical imaging in the quantum optical regime.

Introduction: Tooth agenesis is a type of dental anomaly in which individuals are missing teeth due to developmental failure as a result of genetic or environmental factors. With approximately one fourth of the population missing ≥1 third molar, tooth agenesis is considered a common dental anomaly. However, the severity of tooth agenesis can range from a missing single tooth to multiple teeth. When suffering from severe tooth agenesis, the patient's health and social relationships are often affected. Case Presentation: The patient in this report congenitally lost 11 teeth and suffered from compromised esthetics and impaired chewing function. In such a severe tooth agenesis case, interdisciplinary treatments involving orthodontics, periodontics, and prosthodontics were engaged to reconstruct the ideal biology, function, and esthetics for the patient. With an interdisciplinary approach, the periodontist played an important role in the rehabilitation of the edentulous regions with implants in combination with various hard and soft tissue augmentation procedures. In addition, the patient with severe tooth agenesis presented with additional dental anomalies. The periodontist, therefore, had to collaborate with other specialists to provide early detection and intervention to avoid future complications, such as the management of infraoccluded ankylosed deciduous molars and aberrant frenum. The patient at the end of treatment had a good occlusion with improved function and esthetics. Conclusion: This case report describes the interdisciplinary treatment approach used and points out the role of periodontists in the treatment of a patient with severe tooth agenesis. ABSTRACT: This study aims to determine the effects of normal and angel wing on morphological and histological characteristics of white Roman geese. Angel wing is a torsion of a wing at the carpometacarpus all the way down to the end, stretching outward away from the body lateral. In this study, 30 geese were raised for observing the whole appearance, including stretched wings and morphologies of defeathered wings at 14 wk old. A group of 30 goslings was raised to observe the feature of conformation development of wing bones from 4 to 8 wk old by X-ray photography. The results show that normal wing on angles of the metacarpals and radioulnar bones has a trend greater than the angel wing group (P = 0.927) at the age of 10 wk. According to 64-slice images of computerized tomography scanner on a group of 10-wk-old geese, the interstice at the carpus joint of the angel wing was larger than that of the normal wing. The slight to moderate dilated space of the carpometacarpal joint was found in the angel wing group. In conclusion, the angel wing is torqued outward away from the body laterals at the carpometacarpus and has a slight to moderate dilated space in the carpometacarpal joint. The normal wing geese exhibited an angel that is 9.24% greater than those of angel wing geese at the age of 14 wk (130 vs. 118.5°).

We investigate the scattering properties of coupled parity-time (PT) symmetric chiral nanospheres with scattering matrix formalism. The exceptional points, i.e., spectral singularities at which the eigenvalues and eigenvectors simultaneously coalesce in the parameter space, of scattering matrix can be tailored by the chirality of the nanospheres. We also calculate the scattering, absorption and extinction cross sections of the PT-symmetric chiral scatter under illumination by monochromatic left- and right-circularly polarized plane waves. We find that the scattering cross section of the nanostructures exhibits an asymmetry when the plane waves are incident from the loss and gain regions, respectively, especially in the broken phase, and the optical cross section exhibits circular dichroism, i.e., differential extinction when the PT-symmetric scatter is endowed with chirality. In particular, under illumination by linearly polarized monochromatic plane waves without intrinsic chirality, the ellipticity of scattered fields in the forward direction, denoting the chirality of light, becomes larger when the scatter is in the PT-symmetry-broken phase. Our findings demonstrate that the gain and loss can control the optical chirality and enhance the chiroptical interactions and pave the way for studying the resonant chiral light–matter interactions in non-Hermitian photonics.

Metasurfaces with ultrathin artificial structures have attracted much attention because of their unprecedented capability in light manipulations. The recent development of metasurfaces with controllable responses opens up new opportunities in various applications. Moreover, metasurfaces composed of twisted chiral structures can generate asymmetric responses for opposite incidence, leading to more degrees of freedom in wave detections and controls. However, most past studies had focused on the amplitude responses, not to mention using bi-directional phase responses, in the characterization and light manipulation of chiral metasurfaces. Here, we report a birefringent interference approach to achieve a controllable asymmetric bi-directional transmission phase from planar chiral metasurface by tuning the orientation of the metasurface with respect to the optical axis of an add-on birefringent substrate. To demonstrate our approach, we fabricate planar Au sawtooth nanoarray metasurface and measure the asymmetric transmission phase of the metasurface placed on a birefringent sapphire crystal slab. The Au sawtooth metasurface-sapphire system exhibits large oscillatory behavior for the asymmetric transmission phase with the tuning parameter. We confirm our experimental results by Jones matrix calculations using data obtained from full-wave simulations for the metasurface. Our approach in the characterization and light manipulation of metasurfaces with controllable responses is simple and nondestructive, enabling new functionalities and potential applications in optical communication, imaging, and remote sensing.

Objective Wheat bran (WB) was co-fermented with Aspergillus oryzae and phytase (Phy) to determine whether co-fermentation improve WB phosphorus and fiber utilization in Isa-brown layers. Methods A total of 112 Isa brown layer were randomly divided into 7 treatments with 8 replicates per a treatment and 2 hens per a replicate. The treatments included basal diet (control), basal diet supplemented with 250 unit/kg Phy (control+Phy), diet with 10% WB (10% WB), diet with 5% WB and 250 unit/kg Phy (5% WB+Phy) diet with 10% WB and 250 unit/kg Phy (10% WB+Phy), diet with 5% fermented WB supplemented with molasses and phy (PCFWH) and 125 unit/kg Phy (5% PCFWH), and diet with 10% PCFWH (10% PCFWH). The intestinal microbial population, intestinal morphology, serum antioxidant enzyme activities, and excreta phosphorus content were assessed. Results In PCFWH, spore counts, protease activity, xylanase activity, and ferulic acid were 8.50 log/g dry matter (DM), 190 unit/g DM, 120 unit/g DM, and 127 μg/g, respectively. Xylobiose and xylotriose were released in PCFWH, while they were not detectable in WB. Antioxidant capacity was also enhanced in PCFWH compared to WB. The 10% WB+Phy and 10% PCFWH groups produced higher egg mass, but hens fed 5% WB+Phy had the lowest amount of feed intake. Eggs from 10% PCFWH had better eggshell weight, eggshell strength, and eggshell thickness. Birds fed with 10% PCFWH also had higher serum superoxide dismutase and catalase activities. Compare to control, 10% PCFWH significantly reduced excreta phosphorus content. Conclusion Diet inclusion of 10% PCFWH improved egg quality, antioxidant status, and excreta phosphorus content of laying hens.

The ability of chiral media to differentiate circularly polarized light is conventionally characterized by circular dichroism (CD) which is based on the difference in the absorption of the incident light for different polarizations. Thus, CD probes the bulk properties of chiral media. Here, we introduce a new approach termed as circular phase-dichroism that is based on the surface properties and is defined as the difference of the reflection phase for different circularly polarized incident lights in characterizing chiral media. As a demonstration, we measure the reflection phase from planar chiral sawtooth metasurface for circularly polarized light in the visible range using a simple Fabry Perot interference technique. The measured circular phase-dichroism is also crosschecked by conventional CD measurement of the transmitted light and by full-wave simulations. Our results demonstrate the potential applications of circular phase-dichroism in sensing and metasurface characterizations.

Bananas are one of the most popular fruits worldwide, producing over 100 million tons in 2013. Banana peel, a byproduct that represents 40% of the entire banana’s weight, is rich in bioactive compounds and has a high antioxidant capacity. Therefore, the aim of this study is to use banana peel powder (BPP) as an antioxidant broiler feed additive. The bioactive compound and antioxidant capacity of BPP were determined. The results showed that BPP contained 872.7 GAE/100 g DM of total phenolic content, and gallocatechin was detected at a concentration of 91 mg/100 g DM, and BPP’s ferrous chelating ability, ferric ion reducing ability power, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging capacity indicated its high antioxidant capacity. A total of 216 one-day-old Ross 308 female broiler chicks were randomly assigned to one of four groups that received the basal diet supplemented with 0% (control), 0.5%, 1%, or 2% dry BPP for 35 d. The results showed that the 0.5% BPP-supplemented group had increased serum SOD activity and lowered serum malondialdehyde levels, while the liver mRNA expression of Nrf2, SOD, CAT, GPx, and HO-1 were upregulated in the 0.5% and 1% BPP-supplemented groups. In conclusion, the current study shows that BPP has a potent antioxidant capacity and dietary supplementation with 0.5% BPP enhances antioxidative status, suggesting that BPP has potential as an antioxidant feed additive.Highlights Banana peel has abundant bioactive compounds and antioxidant capacity. Banana peel enhance the antioxidant status of broilers by up-regulating Nrf2/ARE associated genes. Banana peel has potential as an antioxidant feed additive in broiler chickens.
