Disperse ferrite is generally embedded in lightweight steel, yet exhibits decent performance, thereby prompting a question: can heterogeneous design optimize it? Here, two representative structures, featured with discontinuous fibrous and dispersed ferrite separately embedded in the austenite matrix, were constructed as examples to address the issue. A heterostructure with fibrous ferrite shows a remarkable product (49 GPa·%) of ultimate strength and total elongation, standing out among other lightweight steels. Superior strength-ductility synergy is primarily attributed to hetero-deformation-induced strengthening and hardening. Abundant hetero-interactions imparted by phase boundaries, dense slip bands in austenite and dislocation networks inside ferrite serve as underlying physical mechanisms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The strength of ultra-low carbon maraging stainless steels can be significantly enhanced by precipitating nanoscale intermetallic secondary phases. Retained or reversed austenite in the steel can improve its toughness, which is key to achieving an ideal combination of strength and toughness. Ti and Al are often used as cost-effective strengthening elements in maraging stainless steels but the synergistic toughening and strengthening mechanisms of Ti and Al have not been studied. To investigate the synergistic toughening and strengthening mechanisms of Ti and Al in Co-free maraging stainless steels, this paper focuses on the microstructure and mechanical properties of three alloys: Fe-12Cr-11Ni-1.7Al-0.5Ti (Steel A), Fe-12Cr-11Ni-0.5Ti (Steel B), and Fe-12Cr-11Ni-1.7Al (Steel C). The impact of Ti and Al on the microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermodynamic simulations. The relationship between microstructure, strength, and toughness is also discussed. The results indicated that Steel A, containing both Al and Ti, exhibited the highest strength level after solution treatment at 900 °C, with an ultimate tensile strength reaching 1571 MPa after aging at 540 °C. This is attributed to the simultaneous precipitation of spherical β-NiAl and rod-shaped η-Ni3Ti phases. Steel B, with only Ti, formed a significant amount of Ni-rich reversed austenite during aging, reducing its ultimate tensile strength to 1096 MPa. Steel C, with only Al, showed a high strength–toughness combination, which was achieved by forming dispersive nano-sized intermetallic precipitates of β-NiAl in the martensitic matrix with a slight amount of austenite. A novel non-magnetic Fe-21Cr-15Ni-5Mn-2Mo austenitic stainless steel with high strength and plasticity has been developed. The microstructure and liquid helium temperature (4.2 K) tensile properties of the top and bottom samples of large-size forged flat steel after solution treatment at 1090 °C were investigated. The results showed that the average grain size of the bottom sample (48.0 ± 6.7 μm) was smaller than that of the top sample (58.8 ± 15.3 μm), and the MX precipitates and Z phases were distributed in the matrix of the samples. The 4.2 K strengths of the samples at the top and bottom were high, and large amounts of annealing twin boundaries played a certain role in strengthening. After cryogenic tensile testing, large amounts of deformation twins, stacking faults, and dislocations were generated inside the austenite grains of both samples, which helped the material to obtain higher plasticity and strength. The top and bottom samples possessed excellent synergies of strength and plasticity at 4.2 K, and the 4.2 K tensile properties of the top sample were as follows: ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 1850 MPa, yield strength (YS) of 1363 MPa, and elongation (EL) of 26%. The tested steel is thus believed to meet the requirements of combined excellent strength and plasticity within a deep cryogenic environment, and it would be a promising material candidate for manufacturing superconducting coil cases to serve in new generation fusion engineering. Electrochemistry methods were used to investigate the influence of pH on the passive film and corrosion behavior of ultrahigh strength AM355 stainless steel in chloride-containing media. Analysis of the Pourbaix diagram indicates that AM355 stainless steel exhibits higher corrosion resistance in natural and near-natural environments than that in acidic and alkaline conditions. Electrochemistry measurements and composition analysis of the passive film show that pitting potential increased due to the enhanced repassivation capacity of AM355 stainless steel with increasing pH. The mixed MnS/oxide inclusions are the main pitting sensitive locations under all conditions. Morphological observations and energy-dispersive spectroscopy showed that the influence of the gap between the martensitic laths is significant with increasing pH. The inclusions, element concentrations, and microstructures weaken the resistance of ultrahigh-strength martensitic AM355 stainless steel against corrosion. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

The effect of manufacturing parameters on mechanical and corrosion resistance is investigated using tensile tests and electrochemical experiments for selective laser‐melted 15‐5PH stainless steel. The results demonstrate that when laser power is decreased to 150 W and scanning speed increased to 1400 mm s−1, manufacturing defects increase. Plasticity and corrosion resistance reduce significantly. Cracks mainly originate from manufacturing defects and extend along the interface between molten pools. Corrosion occurs near manufacturing defects. Finally, the most suitable laser energy density is 130 J mm−3 for 15‐5PH stainless steel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
