11. Remarkable enhancement of thermal conductivity induced by coordination transition in SiO2 thin films.

Abstract

The heat transfer in SiO2 is mainly dominated by phonons, but the void defects and boundary effects in the films cause strong scattering of phonons, resulting in a low thermal conductivity. Herein, we report the SiO2 thin films with prominently enhanced thermal conductivity after high-temperature annealing. Through combined experiments and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulation, we reveal the improvement of thermal conductivity that is originally attributed to coordination transition during the high-temperature annealing. Analysis indicates that a more ordered atom structure and denser grain boundaries could derive from the coordination transition, resulting in the crystallization of grains and defect mending. These behaviors induce a reduction of phonons scattering and increase in mean free path, which lead to nearly twofold enhance in the thermal conductivity to 2.66 Wm−1 K−1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Electrohydrodynamic jet (E‐Jet) printing is a highly promising non‐contact additive manufacturing technology. However, the fast jets generated by E‐Jet may cause droplet accumulation on small curvature features due to the slow motion control achieved by the mechanical stage, leading to a degradation of printed patterns in localized areas. Here, a method is proposed for ultrafast modulation of jet trajectories to achieve finely patterned E‐Jet printing by introducing jet‐deflecting electrodes around the jet, which can continuously transform the jet trajectory with lateral acceleration up to 104 ms−2. This extraordinary acceleration is two orders of magnitude higher than that can be achieved by using mechanical stage motion. Through a combination of numerical calculations and experiments, the effects of electric field parameters on the feature size and kinematic properties of jet droplets are investigated. In addition, deposition errors of <5 µm are fabricated by selecting appropriate working parameters and using UV‐curable adhesives as printing ink. Subsequently, complex micropatterns with feature curvatures <4 µm are successfully printed, demonstrating the consistency and reliability of this electrostatic deflection technique in achieving a uniform droplet deposition pitch. 41. Stability Enhancement of the Platinum Thin-Film Temperature Detector up to 1400 °C by Printing Al₂O₃ Protective Layer

Abstract

Platinum (Pt) resistance temperature detectors (RTDs) are extensively employed as thin-film temperature sensors. However, agglomeration of Pt thin films occurs above 800 °C due to grain boundary grooving on the free surface, ultimately limiting its application at high temperatures. In this work, a Pt RTD was prepared by depositing multilayer Al2O3 protective layer on Pt thin films using electrodynamic jet printing (EJP) technology. The surface morphology and energy-dispersive spectroscopy spectrum of Pt thin films indicated that the voids on the surface are reduced, the grains’ growth is inhibited, and the movement and grooving of grain boundaries are limited. The test results indicate that the Pt RTD has not failed after six cycles of repeated warming and cooling from 800 °C to 1300 °C. After repeated cycles, the initial resistance of the Pt RTD is with a rate of change of less than 0.5%. In addition, the maximum relative deviation of the resistance in a single cycle is less than 1.6%. The Pt RTD with an 18-layer Al2O3 protective layer has undergone 12 cycles without failure, indicating a cycle life exceeding 10 h. Pt RTDs are stable over the range of 25 °C–1400 °C with correlation coefficients ${R}^{{2}}$ greater than 0.999, showing good linear correlation. It can withstand temperatures up to 1440 °C when printed with 18 protective layers. Compared to a Pt RTD without protective layers, the operating temperature is increased by 40%. This advancement provides a viable solution for the high-temperature monitoring of hot-end components in aerospace applications.
