19. Use of synchrotron radiation in plastics analysis

Abstract

We demonstrate the application of synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) in measuring the thermodynamic properties of polymer blends. The polymers under investigation consist of poly(cyclohexyl acrylate) (PCHA) blended with the ortho and meta isomer of poly(bromostyrene) (P2BrS, P3BrS). Measurements of the absolute scattered intensity enable the determination of the second derivative of the Gibbs free energy of mixing with respect to the concentration, the location of the spinodal temperature, and the Flory-Huggins χ-parameter.

Abstract

We use synchrotron small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), calorimetry and cloud point measurements to investigate the thermodynamic of mixing in blends of poly(cyclohexyl acrylate) with the ortho and meta isomer of poly(bromostyrene) [P2BrS, P3BrS]. PCHA is miscible with P2BrS and P3BrS with lower critical solution temperature (LCST). Measurements of the absolute scattered intensity enable determination of the Flory-Huggins χ-parameter within the framework of the de Gennes random phase approximation. The following order is observed: χ(PCHA/P2BrS)

37. Chirality effect of single-wall carbon nanotubes on field emission.

Abstract

The chirality effect of an opened-end single-wall carbon nanotube on field emission is studied by using the tunneling theory with the tight-binding approximation. The characteristic of the emission-current line density versus field is found to be dependence on the chirality of nanotubes. A metallic tube has a line density higher than that of a semiconducting one. Also, for semiconducting tubes, a tube of larger chiral angle has a line density higher than that of smaller chiral angle; a zigzag semiconducting tube has a smallest line density among the others. Further, the Fowler–Nordheim plots may have a nonlinear behavior in high current region. Finally, at temperature T<1000 K, the emission current is almost independent of temperature. 38. SANS STUDY OF ASPHALTENE AGGREGATION

Abstract

The colloidal properties of asphaltenes affects their solubility, reactivity and transport properties. We have been investigating the molecular basis for the aggregation of asphaltenes in toluene through the use of Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS), in which the hydrogen nucleus provides the strongest scatterer, and the contrast may be varied by deuterium replacement. The measured intensity curves can be fitted with a elongated particle. Both radius of gyration and molecular weight are significantly decreased upon increasing. temperature, indicating a disaggregation rather than a conformational change mechanism. Thus, the "true" molecular weight of asphaltenes is much less that that measured at room temperature, and appears to be ≤6000. The internal structure is probably complex enough so that a simple description in terms of colloidal or micellar structures is not granted.
