Abstract

We demonstrate an integral gated mode single photon detector at telecom wavelengths. The charge number of an avalanche pulse rather than the peak current is monitored for single-photon detection. The transient spikes in conventional gated mode operation are canceled completely by integrating, which enables one to improve the performance of single photon detector greatly with the same avalanche photodiode. This method has achieved a detection efficiency of 29.9% at the dark count probability per gate equal to 5.57E-6/gate (1.11E-6/ns) at 1550nm., Comment: word to PDF, 3 pages with 4 figures

Abstract

Arsenic and cadmium pose a potential health risk to human beings via rice grain consumption. In the current study, a pot experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of Br (5 mM and 20 mM) and Se (1 mM) at rice tillering and filling stages on Cd and As accumulation in rice grain and their health risk indices. The results showed that Br or Se applications at different stages of rice improved the photosynthesis, reduce MDA content in flag leaves by 17.41%–38.65%, increased rice biomass and grain yield by 10.50%–29.94% and 10.50%–36.56%, and enhanced grain N and P uptake by 3.25%–34.90%, and 22.98%-72.05%, respectively. Applications of Br and Se effectively decreased Cd and As concentration in rice grain by 31.74%–86.97% and 16.42%–81.13% respectively. Compared to the individual treatment, combined 20 mM Br and 1 mM Se at the filling stage showed the lowest accumulation of As (0.149 mg·kg−1) and Cd (0.105 mg·kg−1) in grain, and its health risk index was below the acceptable limits (HRI < 1). This implies that application of Br and Se at the filling stage is a promising strategy for the safe production of rice in As and Cd co-contaminated regions. In this study, foliar applications of Br and Se at the grain filling and tillering stage demonstrate their effect on As and Cd accumulation. The findings showed that Br and Se resulted in the Se concentration in grains reaching the Se-enriched level, and the accumulation of As and Cd was the lowest. Furthermore, the application of Br and Se decreased lipid peroxidation, promoted N and P uptake, and increased the rate of photosynthesis in the rice plants, which resulted in increasing rice growth and grain yield. 21. An Enhanced Electrokinetic/Waste Fe(OH) 3 Permeable Reactive Barrier System for Soil Remediation in Sulfide Mine Areas.

Abstract

Traditional electrokinetic (EK) technology can remove contaminants from soil, but the efficiency is generally low. This study reports on the combination of enhanced EK and a waste ferric hydroxide (Fe(OH)3) permeable reactive barrier (PRB) for the remediation of soil in sulfide mine areas. Hydroxyethylene diphosphonic acid (HEDP) and FeCl3 were used as a compound chelating agent. The experimental results showed that EK combined with PRB technology (95.32% Cd removal) was more effective than single EK in removing cadmium (Cd) from the contaminated soil, because of the compound chelating agent and PRB filled with sustainable Fe(OH)3 adsorbent. Additionally, the application of PRB in combination with HEDP was able to increase the sulfate removal rate to 96.19%. The accumulated energy consumption of these two systems was 182.4 and 356 kWh/m3, respectively, after EK remediation using PRB. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The developments in the high-power densities and high integration of electronic devices have put forward higher requirements for advanced thermal management materials (TMMs) to meet the rising demand for heat dissipation. However, it has remained a major challenge to achieve significant enhancement of thermal conductivity (TC) of TMMs without compromising their mechanical and dielectric properties. Here, we report a flexible, thermally conductive composite film that contain aramid nanofiber (ANF) and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) decorated with boron nitride (BN), the in-plane TC of which is up to 12 W/mK at 40 wt.% filler contents. Such a high TC is attributed to the bridging role of AgNPs, which greatly reduces the interfacial thermal resistance of composites. At the same time, the as-prepared composite films possess outstanding mechanical strength (>126 MPa), owing to the coupling between the ANF network and the favourable hydrogen bonding interaction between the ANF and the functional BN. Moreover, a low dielectric loss (<0.05), high electrical resistivity (~1014 Ω·cm), and high decomposition temperature (>500°C) are simultaneously achieved for the composite films. Abstract

In this study, maize plant was cultured in soil contaminated with different levels of crude oil. The purpose was to investigate the change of soil properties, leaf physiological and chemical parameters, and phenanthrene content in the leaf. Results showed that soil water content significantly increased when the levels of total petroleum hydrocarbons were 3700&ndash, 17,800 mg/kg in soil, and soil electrical conductivity significantly increased compared with the control. In maize leaf, stomatal length and density, as well as K and Na contents decreased in contaminated treatments compared with the control. Stomatal length has a significant positive correlation with K content in leaf (r = 0.92, p &lt, 0.01), while stomatal density was negatively correlated to the crude oil level in soil (r = &minus, 0.91, p &lt, 0.05). Accumulation of phenanthrene in maize leaf was mainly through the foliar uptake pathway. Phenanthrene concentrations of maize leaf in oil-treated soil were less than that of the control, which exhibited a significant positive relationship with stomatal length (r = 0.98, p &lt, 0.01). This study demonstrated that the stomata structure of maize could be influenced by crude oil and thus possibly controlling the accumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in aerial tissues. Based on these results, controlling stomata movement will be beneficial to phytoremediation of contaminated soil.

Abstract

To improve the Network-on-Chip (NoC) performance, we propose a system-level bandwidth design method customising the bandwidths of the NoC links. In details, we first built a mathematical model to catch the relationship between the NoC commutation latency and the NoC link bandwidth, and then develop a bandwidth allocation algorithm to automatically optimise the bandwidth for each NoC link. The experimental results show that our bandwidth-customising method improves the NoC performance compared to the traditional uniform bandwidth allocation method. Besides, it can also make our NoC to achieve the same communication performance level as the uniform bandwidth NoC but using fewer bandwidth resources, which is beneficial to save the NoC area and power.

Abstract

In this letter, a diode trigger silicon-controlled rectifier (DTSCR) with small diode width is proposed for Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection of the low-voltage integrated circuits. The trigger voltage of DTSCR is adjusted by the width of the diodes which are used to trigger on the SCR device. Experimental data show the trigger voltage increases with decreasing the area of the diodes. The trigger voltage of the DTSCR with small diode width can increase 0.75V compared to that with large diode width. This method can increase the trigger voltage of the DTSCR with reducing the chip area.

Abstract

A Heterojunction bipolar transistor (HBT) trigger Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) device in a 0.35μm Silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS technology is proposed for Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection in this paper. The trigger voltage of the HBT trigger SCR (HTSCR) is decided by the collector-to-emitter breakdown voltage (BV CEO ) of the HBT structure in floating base configuration. Compared to the traditional MLSCRs, the trigger voltage of the fabricated HTSCR can reduce to less 50% of that of the MLSCR. The operational mechanisms of the HTSCR is discussed, and the underlying physical mechanisms critical to the trigger voltage are demonstrated based on transmission line pulsing (TLP) measurement.
