Abstract

In this paper, we propose SemanticAC, a semantics-assisted framework for Audio Classification to better leverage the semantic information. Unlike conventional audio classification methods that treat class labels as discrete vectors, we employ a language model to extract abundant semantics from labels and optimize the semantic consistency between audio signals and their labels. We verify that simple textual information from labels and advanced pretraining models enable more abundant semantic supervision for better performance. Specifically, we design a text encoder to capture the semantic information from the text extension of labels. Then we map the audio signals to align with the semantics of corresponding class labels via an audio encoder and a similarity calculation module so as to enforce the semantic consistency. Extensive experiments on two audio datasets, ESC-50 and US8K demonstrate that our proposed method consistently outperforms the compared audio classification methods.

11. Dual-array localization of vibroacoustic source for leaks in buried gas pipelines

Abstract

To accurately locate leaks in buried gas pipelines, a dual-array localization method of eigenspace-based DOA estimation was proposed to detect the leak-induced vibroacoustic signals with the ground-mounted accelerometer array, identify the ground markers and obtain the depth of the leak source. The minimum variance distortionless response beamforming algorithm was introduced to conduct spatial filtering for the array signal, so as to eliminate the reverberation interference in the finite experimental space. Under the experimental soil conditions, the frequency of the leak signals ranges from 200 Hz to 700 Hz and the P1 wave speed is 1 108 m/s. After filtering on the reverberation signal, the source directions can be accurately estimated with the arrays at different locations, for which the root mean square error is kept lower than 1° at the SNR of-3 dB. When the leak source is located in front of the second array, the calculation errors of the marker distance and leak source depth are found lower than 0.06 m and 0.04 m respectively at the SNR of-3 dB, and accurate localization can be achieved by properly adjusting the array location. The locating accuracy of the dual-array localization method is higher than that of the single-array locating method, with the localization error reduced by 79.45% on average, which is helpful to identify and verify the microleak points of buried gas pipelines, and ensure the safe operation of pipelines.

Abstract

Cubic hollow-structured NiCo-LDH was synthesized using a solvothermal method. Subsequently, clay-like Ti3C2Tx MXenes were electrostatically self-assembled with NiCo layered double hydroxides (NiCo-LDH) to form composites featuring three-dimensional porous heterostructures. The composites were characterized using SEM, TEM, XRD, XPS, and FT-IR spectroscopy. Ti3C2Tx MXenes exhibit excellent electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity, providing abundant binding sites for NiCo-LDH, thereby promoting an increase in ion diffusion channels. The formation of three-dimensional porous heterostructural composites enhances charge transport, significantly improving sensor sensitivity and response speed. Consequently, the sensor demonstrates excellent electrochemical detection capability for quercetin (Qu), with a detection range of 0.1–20 µM and a detection limit of 23 nM. Additionally, it has been applied to the detection of Qu in natural plants such as onion, golden cypress, and chrysanthemum. The recovery ranged from 97.6 to 102.28%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

28. Advancing the Understanding of Microplastic Weathering: Insights from a Novel Polarized Light Scattering Approach

Abstract

Weathering is a significant process that alters the properties of microplastics (MPs) and consequently affects their environmental behaviors. In this study, we introduced a novel approach based on polarized light scattering technique, which offers advantages in terms of rapid, high-throughput, and submicron-sized detection. This technique was successfully applied to characterize the weathered MPs after a 180-day laboratory simulation of coastal environments. By employing polarization measurements, we obtained a 46-dimensional matrix data set for the weathered MP fragments and subsequently processed them using a backpropagation neural network. The successful extraction of effective polarization pulses confirmed the presence of MP fragments within the size range of 0.2–60 μm, yielding total accuracies for size classification ranging from 78.9 to 86.9%. Furthermore, this technique achieved an overall accuracy of 93.8% in classifying MPs with different weathering degrees and polymer types, revealing polarization parameters associated with size and morphological changes play a dominant role in characterizing the weathering process of MPs. Compared with conventional approaches, the novel polarized light scattering approach holds great promise for rapid, high-throughput, and accurate characterization of MPs with small sizes. The findings of this study provided new insights into how MPs change after long-term weathering in aquatic environments.

30. Identifying Temporal Change in Urban Water Bodies Using OpenStreetMap and Landsat Imagery: A Study of Hangzhou City.

Abstract

As one of the most important ecosystems, the water body is losing water during the rapid development of the city. To understand the impacts on water body change during the rapid urbanization period, this study combines data from the OpenStreetMap platform with Landsat 5/Thematic Mapper images to effectively and accurately identify small urban water bodies. The findings indicate that the trained U-net convolutional neural network (U-Net) water body extraction model and loss function combining Focal Loss and Dice Loss adopted in this study demonstrate high precision in identifying water bodies within the main urban area of Hangzhou, with an accuracy rate of 94.3%. Trends of decrease in water areas with a continuous increase in landscape fragmentation, particularly for the plain river network, were observed from 1985 to 2010, indicating a weaker connection between water bodies resulting from rapid urbanization. Large patches of water bodies, such as natural lakes and big rivers, located at divisions at the edge of the city are susceptible to disappearing during the rapid outward expansion. However, due to the limitations and strict control of development, water bodies, referring to as wetland, slender canals, and plain river networks, in the traditional center division of the city, are preserved well. Combined with the random forest classification method and the U-Net water body extraction model, land use changes from 1985 to 2010 are calculated. Reclamation along the Qiantang River accounts for the largest conversion area between water bodies and cultivated land, constituting more than 90% of the total land use change area, followed by the conversion of water bodies into construction land, particularly in the northeast of Xixi Wetland. Notably, the conversion of various land use types within Xixi Wetland into construction land plays a significant role in the rise of the carbon footprint. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

44. Continued Treatment With Tirzepatide for Maintenance of Weight Reduction in Adults With Obesity: The SURMOUNT-4 Randomized Clinical Trial.

Abstract

Key Points: Question: Does once-weekly subcutaneous tirzepatide with diet and physical activity affect maintenance of body weight reduction in individuals with obesity or overweight? Findings: After 36 weeks of open-label maximum tolerated dose of tirzepatide (10 or 15 mg), adults (n = 670) with obesity or overweight (without diabetes) experienced a mean weight reduction of 20.9%. From randomization (at week 36), those switched to placebo experienced a 14% weight regain and those continuing tirzepatide experienced an additional 5.5% weight reduction during the 52-week double-blind period. Meaning: In participants with obesity/overweight, withdrawing tirzepatide led to substantial regain of lost weight, whereas continued treatment maintained and augmented initial weight reduction. Importance: The effect of continued treatment with tirzepatide on maintaining initial weight reduction is unknown. Objective: To assess the effect of tirzepatide, with diet and physical activity, on the maintenance of weight reduction. Design, Setting, and Participants: This phase 3, randomized withdrawal clinical trial conducted at 70 sites in 4 countries with a 36-week, open-label tirzepatide lead-in period followed by a 52-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled period included adults with a body mass index greater than or equal to 30 or greater than or equal to 27 and a weight-related complication, excluding diabetes. Interventions: Participants (n = 783) enrolled in an open-label lead-in period received once-weekly subcutaneous maximum tolerated dose (10 or 15 mg) of tirzepatide for 36 weeks. At week 36, a total of 670 participants were randomized (1:1) to continue receiving tirzepatide (n = 335) or switch to placebo (n = 335) for 52 weeks. Main Outcomes and Measures: The primary end point was the mean percent change in weight from week 36 (randomization) to week 88. Key secondary end points included the proportion of participants at week 88 who maintained at least 80% of the weight loss during the lead-in period. Results: Participants (n = 670; mean age, 48 years; 473 [71%] women; mean weight, 107.3 kg) who completed the 36-week lead-in period experienced a mean weight reduction of 20.9%. The mean percent weight change from week 36 to week 88 was −5.5% with tirzepatide vs 14.0% with placebo (difference, −19.4% [95% CI, −21.2% to −17.7%]; P <.001). Overall, 300 participants (89.5%) receiving tirzepatide at 88 weeks maintained at least 80% of the weight loss during the lead-in period compared with 16.6% receiving placebo (P <.001). The overall mean weight reduction from week 0 to 88 was 25.3% for tirzepatide and 9.9% for placebo. The most common adverse events were mostly mild to moderate gastrointestinal events, which occurred more commonly with tirzepatide vs placebo. Conclusions and Relevance: In participants with obesity or overweight, withdrawing tirzepatide led to substantial regain of lost weight, whereas continued treatment maintained and augmented initial weight reduction. Abstract

Antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) is a novel therapeutic platform for targeted cancer therapy. Previously, we have demonstrated that miR-146b-5p plays an important role in colorectal cancer progression. However, a safe and effective strategy for delivery of an ASO to its targeted RNA remains as a major hurdle in translational advances. Human umbilical cord mesenchymal cell (hUC-MSC)-derived exosomes were used as vehicles to deliver an anti-miR-146b-5p ASO (PMO-146b). PMO-146b was assembled onto the surface of exosomes (e) through covalent conjugation to an anchor peptide CP05 (P) that recognized an exosomal surface marker, CD63, forming a complex named ePPMO-146b. After ePPMO-146b treatment, cell proliferation, uptake ability, and migration assays were performed, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition progression was evaluated in vitro. A mouse xenograft model was used to determine the antitumor effect and distribution of ePPMO-146b in vivo. ePPMO-146b was taken up by SW620 cells and effectively inhibited cell proliferation and migration. The conjugate also exerted antitumor efficacy in a xenograft mouse model of colon cancer by systematic administration, where PPMO-146b was enriched in tumor tissue.
