Abstract: The dative alternation has been extensively studied in the world’s languages, and the meanings of the verbs participating in the alternation have been shown to play a key role in determining its argument realization options. The present paper presents a multiple distinctive collexeme analysis approach to the dative alternation in Mandarin Chinese, which involves a choice of one of five functionally similar alternants, and it does so by also discussing several ways to improve how this has been done statistically in most previous analyses. Linguistically, we identify the core semantic differences of the five constructions based on which verbs statistically prefer to occur in which pattern, focusing on semantic potential and direction of transfer. Methodologically, this study contributes to the slowly growing body of studies that use collexeme strengths that are not only less related to frequency than the traditional methods (i.e., association is measured in a less diluted way) and that are directional (i.e., we can focus on one direction of association from the verb to the construction).

China has become second only to America in scientific publications. However, it is not clear whether China has also become a power in social sciences as it has in natural sciences, and pertinent research is still scarce. The present study reports on a bibliometric investigation into China’s development of linguistics research from 2003 to 2012. The bibliometric information of SSCI publications by researchers from Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau was retrieved from the Web of Science. Indices such as the number of publications, impact factors, publication citations, and publications in high-impact and popular journals were examined. Results showed that the numbers of publications in linguistics journals from all the four regions had significantly increased in the decade examined. Meanwhile, Hong Kong was the leading region of linguistics research in China. Taiwan was ranked second and had achieved the most remarkable progress from 2003 to 2010. However, it was surpassed from 2011 by Mainland China, which had also made remarkable progress in linguistics research in the decade. Macau had seen its significant improvement while its increase was the least amongst the four regions. Reasons for China’s rapid progress in linguistics research are explained and suggestions for future research are also proposed. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

White spot syndrome virus (WWSV) has become one of the most widespread causes of mortality in commercial shrimp farming. In the present study, we used PCR to determine the shrimp infectious dose 50% endpoint (SID50 ml-1) of a Chinese isolate of WSSV in 5 different sizes of pathogen-free Litopenaeus vannamei inoculated intramuscularly. The lethal dose 50% endpoint (LD50 ml-1) was also determined from the percentage of dead shrimp. The LD50 ml-1 for 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 cm shrimp were 104.68, 105.7, 106.70, 107.75, and 108.81, respectively, and the SID50 ml-1 were 104.68, 105.70, 106.90, 107.75, and 108.94, respectively. There was no significant difference between the LD50 ml-1 and SID50 ml-1 for each shrimp size, which indicated that all infected shrimp died. The lethal and infectious titer decreased about 1 log10 as shrimp size decreased 1 grade. These data clearly indicate that adult shrimp were more susceptible to WSSV than juvenile shrimp. The horizontal comparison showed that the amount of virus in the shrimp organs increased over the experimental period. The vertical comparison showed that virus quantity was lowest in the organs of 10 cm shrimp and highest in 2 cm shrimp, which indicates that the smaller shrimp had higher levels of viral replication. Hence, the optimal size for WSSV challenge in shrimp inoculated intramuscularly was 2 cm. The determination of virus titers in different sizes of shrimp represents a step towards creating strategies to reduce the negative impacts of WSSV in the aquaculture industry.
