Abstract

Many modern nanofabrication and imaging techniques require an ultra-quiet environment to reach optimal resolution. Isolation from ambient vibrations is often achieved by placing the sensitive instrument atop a massive block that floats on air springs and is surrounded by acoustic barriers. Because typical building noise drops off above 120 Hz, it is advantageous to raise the flexural resonance frequencies of the inertia block and instrument far above 120 Hz. However, it can be challenging to obtain a high fundamental frequency of the floating block using a simple rectangular design. Here we design, construct, and characterize a vibration isolation system with a cylindrical inertia block, whose lowest resonance frequency of 249 Hz shows good agreement between finite element analysis simulation and directly measured modes. Our simulations show that a cylindrical design can achieve higher fundamental resonance frequency than a rectangular design of the same mass., Comment: accepted to Review of Scientific Instruments

42. Urinary interferon‐γ‐induced protein‐10/creatinine ratio as a predictor of severe paediatric infections: A prospective pilot study.

Aim Methods Results Conclusion This prospective pilot study evaluated urinary interferon‐γ‐induced protein‐10 (IP‐10)/creatinine and tumour necrosis factor‐related apoptosis‐inducing ligand (TRAIL)/creatinine ratios as non‐invasive biomarkers for distinguishing bacterial from viral infections and assessing disease severity in febrile children.The study involved 85 febrile children and 29 healthy controls, measuring urinary IP‐10/creatinine and TRAIL/creatinine ratios to determine their diagnostic utility.Both ratios were significantly elevated in infected patients compared to controls. The IP‐10/creatinine ratio effectively assessed disease severity in the overall cohort and subgroups (AUC: 0.7324, 0.7192, 0.7277; p < 0.05). Serum C‐reactive protein showed limited discriminatory ability in viral infections (AUC = 0.5385, p = 0.7257). Differentiation between bacterial and viral infections using IP‐10/creatinine approached significance (p = 0.082). No significant differences in biomarker levels were observed across pathogens.The urinary IP‐10/creatinine ratio shows promise as a biomarker for assessing paediatric infection severity, particularly when traditional markers are less effective. Abstract

This study aimed to develop a maker spirit problem – based learning (PBL) innovation and entrepreneurship course and explore its impact on students' learning effectiveness. A mixed research method was adopted for this study, in which qualitative and quantitative data were collected for inductive analysis. The research subjects comprised 49 students who took the 'Innovation and Entrepreneurship Course' at a university of science and technology. Further, an 18-week experimental teaching activity was implemented, in which the 'Maker Spirit – PBL Innovation and Entrepreneurship Course' was innovatively developed. Results revealed that most students showed significant positive learning effectiveness in two levels, namely 'innovation and entrepreneurship', and 'maker practice', after the experimental teaching. Therefore, five major implementation points of the 'Maker Spirit – PBL Innovation and Entrepreneurship Course' were proposed to provide references for future implementations and applications in the teaching field.
