2. Improved Projection-free Online Continuous Submodular Maximization

Abstract

We investigate the problem of online learning with monotone and continuous DR-submodular reward functions, which has received great attention recently. To efficiently handle this problem, especially in the case with complicated decision sets, previous studies have proposed an efficient projection-free algorithm called Mono-Frank-Wolfe (Mono-FW) using $O(T)$ gradient evaluations and linear optimization steps in total. However, it only attains a $(1-1/e)$-regret bound of $O(T^{4/5})$. In this paper, we propose an improved projection-free algorithm, namely POBGA, which reduces the regret bound to $O(T^{3/4})$ while keeping the same computational complexity as Mono-FW. Instead of modifying Mono-FW, our key idea is to make a novel combination of a projection-based algorithm called online boosting gradient ascent, an infeasible projection technique, and a blocking technique. Furthermore, we consider the decentralized setting and develop a variant of POBGA, which not only reduces the current best regret bound of efficient projection-free algorithms for this setting from $O(T^{4/5})$ to $O(T^{3/4})$, but also reduces the total communication complexity from $O(T)$ to $O(\sqrt{T})$.

3. Real-Time Ground Fault Detection for Inverter-Based Microgrid Systems

Abstract

Ground fault detection in inverter-based microgrid (IBM) systems is challenging, particularly in a real-time setting, as the fault current deviates slightly from the nominal value. This difficulty is reinforced when there are partially decoupled disturbances and modeling uncertainties. The conventional solution of installing more relays to obtain additional measurements is costly and also increases the complexity of the system. In this paper, we propose a data-assisted diagnosis scheme based on an optimization-based fault detection filter with the output current as the only measurement. Modeling the microgrid dynamics and the diagnosis filter, we formulate the filter design as a quadratic programming (QP) problem that accounts for decoupling partial disturbances, robustness to non-decoupled disturbances and modeling uncertainties by training with data, and ensuring fault sensitivity simultaneously. To ease the computational effort, we also provide an approximate but analytical solution to this QP. Additionally, we use classical statistical results to provide a thresholding mechanism that enjoys probabilistic false-alarm guarantees. Finally, we implement the IBM system with Simulink and Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method through simulations., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

Background: Urinary incontinence is a urinary disorder in which urine leaks out involuntarily. This disorder seriously affects the quality of life of patients. For patients with mild incontinence, conservative treatment and medication may be the ideal treatment modality, but for patients with severe incontinence, an artificial urinary sphincter is currently a better treatment option. Methods: In order to design an ideal artificial urinary sphincter, this article first searched and collected literature based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses searched strategy by selecting specific subject terms and reviewed the artificial urinary sphincters that are currently in the research stage based on different activation methods. Results: In response to the deficiencies of the existing artificial urinary sphincter, this article discusses the future optimization of the artificial urinary sphincter from three aspects: individual improvement of the artificial urinary sphincter, engineering design elements, and optimization of the artificial urinary sphincter manufacturing process. Conclusions: The manufacture of an idealized artificial urinary sphincter capable of meeting clinical needs is of great importance to improve the quality of life of patients. Abstract

The accumulation of mine tailings on Earth, generated from the extraction, processing, and utilization of mineral resources, is a serious environmental challenge. The importance of the recovery of valuable elements and rare-earth elements, together with the economic benefits of precious and base metals, is a strong incentive to develop sustainable methods to recover metals from tailings. Currently, researchers are attempting to improve the efficiency of valuable elements and rare-earth elements recovery from tailings using bioleaching, a more sustainable method compared to traditional methods. In this work, we report the research status of the application of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (At. ferrooxidans) anaerobic reduction in tailings disposal. Recent advances in the anaerobic characteristics of At. ferrooxidans recovery process and technical difficulties are further described. We found that current research has made significant progress in anaerobic recovery. This is of great significance for the development of bioleaching technologies and industrial production of heavy metals in tailings. Finally, based on the perspectives and directions of this review, the present study can act as an important reference for the academic participants involved in this promising field. 19. Fast discontinuous phase unwrapping based on orientation diagram transformation

Abstract

The phase discontinuity caused by the geometric mutation has always been a challenging problem in phase unwrapping. To solve this problem, a fast discontinuous phase unwrapping algorithm based on orientation and transformation was proposed. In the proposed algorithm, the structure tensor of the image was used to estimate the orientation of the wrapped phase diagram. The reliable weight coefficient diagram obtained from transformation and difference calculation of the orientation diagram was taken as the weight of the weighted least square method, and used the preprocessed conjugate gradient method to solve iteratively. This algorithm could quickly find the discontinuous regions, and performed a separate phase unwrapping in the discontinuous regions, which had good recognition and unwrapping effect. The principle and implementation steps of the algorithm were described in detail, and the algorithm was verified by simulation and experimental data. The experimental results show that the root mean square error of phase unwrapping is 0.36, which proves that this algorithm can quickly and accurately unwrap the discontinuous wrapped phase.

Abstract

Energy borrowing (EB) technique has been proposed recently to improve the performance of wireless communications, which also decreases the burden of the smart grid (SG). To further reduce the burden of SG, we propose an energy depositing (ED) strategy. Specifically, the energy harvesting (EH) device can deposit its unused energy in the SG for decreasing the burden of SG, and it also can extract the deposited energy with additional amount of energy as incentive. An EB-and-ED structure is also proposed to promote a more energy-efficient wireless system. This paper focuses on the ED process, a joint optimization of both ED policy and power scheduling for maximizing the system throughput has been formulated. The simulation results using real solar irradiance data confirm the effectiveness of the proposed ED strategy.
