Abstract

The nucleus of the radioisotope thorium-229 (${}^{229}$Th) features an isomer with an exceptionally low excitation energy that enables direct laser manipulation of nuclear states. For this reason, it is a leading candidate for use in next-generation optical clocks. This nuclear clock will be a unique tool, amongst others, for tests of fundamental physics. While first indirect experimental evidence for the existence of such an extraordinary nuclear state is significantly older, the proof of existence has been delivered only recently by observing the isomer's electron conversion decay and its hyperfine structure in a laser spectroscopy study, revealing information on the isomer's excitation energy, nuclear spin and electromagnetic moments. Further studies reported the electron conversion lifetime and refined the isomer's energy. In spite of recent progress, the isomer's radiative decay, a key ingredient for the development of a nuclear clock, remained unobserved. In this Letter, we report the detection of the radiative decay of this low-energy isomer in thorium-229 (${}^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th). By performing vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopy of ${}^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th incorporated into large-bandgap CaF${}_2$ and MgF${}_2$ crystals at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, the photon vacuum wavelength of the isomer's decay is measured as 148.71(42) nm, corresponding to an excitation energy of 8.338(24) eV. This value is in agreement with recent measurements, and decreases the uncertainty by a factor of seven. The half-life of ${}^{229\mathrm{m}}$Th embedded in MgF${}_2$ is determined to be 670(102) s. The observation of the radiative decay in a large-bandgap crystal has important consequences for the design of a future nuclear clock and the improved uncertainty of the energy eases the search for direct laser excitation of the atomic nucleus.

Abstract

Stable and unstable isotopes of the heavy noble gas xenon find use in various medical applications. However, apart from $^{133}$Xe, used for Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography, radioactive isotopes of xenon are currently complicated to obtain in small quantities. With the GAMMA-MRI project in mind, we investigated a thermal sublimation generator of the long-lived excited state (isomer) $^{131 \textrm{m}}$Xe. This production method utilized the decay of $^{131}$I, obtained commercially from a hospital supplier in the form of Na131I powder. Heat treatments of the Na $^{131}$I powder and cryogenic trapping of released $^{131 \textrm{m}}$Xe allowed us to collect up to 88% of the produced xenon. Our method provides an isomeric mixture of $^{131 \textrm{m}}$Xe and $^{131}$Xe. With improvements in scalability and chemical purification, this method could be a cost-effective source of $^{131 \textrm{m}}$Xe for small-scale experiments.

15. Development of the ISOLDE Decay Station and γ spectroscopic studies of exotic nuclei near the N=20 'Island of Inversion'

Abstract

The main topic of my PhD Thesis is related to nuclear structure studies of neutron-rich nuclei following the beta-decay of 34Mg isotopes produced at the ISOLDE facility of CERN and measured using one of the newest permanent experimental setups, the ISOLDE Decay Station (IDS). I will also describe this setup and some of developments I contributed to during the three years spent as a PhD Student at CERN. This Thesis is divided into 6 chapters: The first chapter contains a description of the radioactive ion-beam production techniques with an emphasis on the ISOL technique and an overview of the capabilities of the ISOLDE facility of CERN. The second chapter is dedicated to the IDS setup, its capabilities and development since the first experimental campaign in 2014. The GEANT4 simulations of IDS are the subject in the third chapter, which cover mainly the HPGe detectors, the core detection system of IDS, and a possible improvement related to reducing the large background present in the high energy region of the HPGe detectors. In the fourth chapter some theoretical aspects will be discussed related to shape coexistence in nuclei with an emphasis on the N=20 “Island of Inversion” together with the physical motivation for studying the 34Al and 34Si isotopes. The fifth chapter presents the experimental setup and results from the IS530 experiment at ISOLDE, CERN, during which the beta-decay of 34Mg was studied. The interpretation of the experimental results and a comparison with state-of-the-art shell-model calculations will be discussed in the sixth chapter followed by conclusions and outlook.

16. Analysis algorithm for digital data used in nuclear spectroscopy

Abstract

Data obtained from digital acquisition systems used in nuclear spectroscopy experiments must be converted by a dedicated algorithm in or- der to extract the physical quantities of interest. I will report here the de- velopment of an algorithm capable to read digital data, discriminate between random and true signals and convert the results into a format readable by a special data analysis program package used to interpret nuclear spectra and to create coincident matrices. The algorithm can be used in any nuclear spectroscopy experimental setup provided that digital acquisition modules are involved. In particular it was used to treat data obtained from the IS441 experiment at ISOLDE where the beta decay of 80Zn was investigated as part of ultra-fast timing studies of neutron rich Zn nuclei. The results obtained for the half-lives of 80Zn and 80Ga were in very good agreement with previous measurements. This fact proved unquestionably that the conversion algorithm works. Another remarkable result was the improvement of 80Ga level scheme but this makes the object of a future publication and will not be detailed here.

Abstract

WOS: 000414625700003, In the EXILL campaign a highly efficient array of high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors was operated at the cold neutron beam facility PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) to carry out nuclear structure studies, via measurements of gamma-rays following neutron-induced capture and fission reactions. The setup consisted of a collimation system producing a pencil beam with a thermal capture equivalent flux of about 10(8) ns(-1)cm(2) at the target position and negligible neutron halo. The targetwas surrounded by an array of eight to ten anti-Compton shielded EXOGAMClover detectors, four to six anti-Compton shielded large coaxial GASP detectors and two standard Clover detectors. For a part of the campaign the array was combined with 16 LaBr3:(Ce) detectors from the FATIMA collaboration. The detectorswere arranged in an array of rhombicuboctahedron geometry, providing the possibility to carry out very precise angular correlation and directional-polarization correlation measurements. The triggerless acquisition system allowed a signal collection rate of up to 6 x 10(5) Hz. The data allowed to set multi-fold coincidences to obtain decay schemes and in combination with the FATIMA array of LaBr3:(Ce) detectors to analyze half-lives of excited levels in the pico-to microsecond range.
