Abstract

This paper discusses the feasibility study on improving the High School Registrar Department office procedure of Caloocan City Business High School. Registrars have a crucial role in enforcing academic policies and providing exceptional services to students. Their work affects every student and part of the institution, so ensuring their efficiency in day-to-day operations is important. The leaders of the Registrar's Department must ensure accurate student records, enforce academic policies, and provide exceptional services while adapting to technological trends and rising standards. This study aims to assist the registrar in mitigating concerns raised by identified problems with current policies and better understand these issues for future effective solutions.   The study used a Qualitative Descriptive Method with the OIC-Registrar's Assistant as the respondent. The researchers conducted interviews and proposed solutions to improve office procedures, such as using email for faster request form processing, adding more assistants, improving facilities, and organizing student files geographically. These solutions will make record-keeping and file management safer and more organized and enhance the competitiveness of Caloocan City Business High School. &nbsp

15. Innovation intermediation in a digital age : Broadening extension service delivery in Ghana

Abstract

Classical extension focuses on linear transfer of technology. Globally, and in Ghana, we have seen attempts to address the linearity of classical extension with the shift to broader service delivery -  extension approaches that include broader facilitation roles for extension staff. From an innovation systems perspective innovation intermediation is suggested for extension organisations to function more effectively and respond to wider agricultural system constraints. This involves three facilitation roles demand articulation, matching demand and supply, and innovation process management. Both public and private extension service providers in Ghana are expanding on the services they deliver. However, these efforts are hampered by human and financial resource constraints. At the same time, there is emphasis on exploring new Information and Communication Technologies’ (ICTs’) potential to improve and upscale extension service delivery. Despite this, there is limited knowledge of new ICTs’ potential and contribution to facilitating innovation intermediation. Considering that new ICTs can enable new ways of connecting people and sharing information this thesis sought to answer the research question: what roles do new ICTs play in supporting innovation intermediation in the Ghanaian extension system? To answer this research question four studies corresponding to the thesis’ empirical chapters were conducted. The studies relate to (1) new ICTs’ capabilities to support communication and networking functions that are relevant to innovation intermediation (chapter 2), (2) the role of new ICTs in supporting innovation intermediation in a public and private extension organisation (chapter 3), (3) the contribution of social media to facilitating open communication spaces to support knowledge sharing and other forms of collaboration involving extension staff and researchers; and (4) farmers’ choices of information sources for managing new pests (chapter 5). Abstract

Informal economies have been growing, in particular, in the developing world. Nearly two-thirds of the world’s employed population earn their livelihoods in the informal economies. The informal economy entrepreneurs provide essential products and services, enhance supply chains, generate employment, and contribute substantially to the economic and social life of communities worldwide. However, the views of informal entrepreneurs have often been marginalized and the issues affecting them are frequently left unobserved in academic or professional debates. Little is known about the informal tourism economy’s characteristics in the existing literatures and so far, no study has estimated the size of the informal tourism economy. Yet, the informal tourism entrepreneurs enter into tourism markets with important skills, qualities, and attributes - in the forms of economic, social, cultural, and dream capitals - which could be utilized more successfully to enable them to contribute to broader economic development initiatives.This PhD-thesis, based on in-depth empirical research, investigates how informal tourism entrepreneurs co-construct their informal tourism sector through their practices. Using an interdisciplinary approach (e.g. mainly sociological and anthropological perspective but also an economic one), this PhD-thesis sees the informal sector as a social system in which people continuously shape and reshape their livelihoods, individually and collectively. More specifically, this PhD-thesis investigates how evolving conditions in the tourism field and beyond simultaneously affect the capital deployment and habitus adaptations of informal tourism entrepreneurs and uses the macroeconomic indicators to estimate the size of the informal tourism economy and its relations to the general economy. Abstract

Potato production is on the rise in developing countries due to its considerable contribution to global food security. The livelihood of millions of smallholder farmers is dependent on this crop. However, various diseases such as bacterial wilt and late blight are primary constraints to potato production. Scholars have been devising different management methods to deal with these and other crop diseases. But the efficacy of most of the recommended integrated disease management methods is limited due to the specific context of smallholder farmers. Even though the importance of considering social and technical dimensions of crop disease management is recognised in the literature, there is a lack of knowledge on how the interplay between social and biophysical conditions aggravate or spread crop diseases. Particularly, information on the management of complex crop diseases that pose a collective risk to the interdependent smallholder farmers is limited. Effective management of crop diseases does not happen in isolation for the broader system, and it requires an improved understanding of the dynamics of social and biophysical conditions and identification of innovations that enhance the management of the diseases. The key aim of this thesis was to examine the social and biophysical factors that explain the widespread of bacterial wilt in potato in Ethiopia and investigate what technical and social innovations could help deal with the disease.In Chapter 2, I identified various actors in the potato innovation system and studied how they understood the problem of bacterial wilt and late blight. The actors did not recognise the interdependency among themselves for effective management of the diseases. The extension system primarily followed a top-down technology transfer approach with limited achievement. Abstract

Different actors, for different reasons, have increasingly questioned how current development models affect distribution, diversity, directionality, and democracy issues within socio-technical systems where the contemporary world meets its basic needs, such as food, energy, and transport. Scholars focused on analyzing agri-food systems' evolution have paid close attention to how directionality interacts with systemic governance to promote specific goals – e.g., to make systems more organized, efficient, or profitable; to make them more environmentally friendly, inclusive, or resilient. Despite valuable critiques and theoretical reflections provided by previous literature regarding directionality and systemic governance, there is a call for 1) sharpening how directionality influences transformative processes; and 2) shedding light on the role of systemic governance in the steerability of directionality. This thesis aims to contribute to these debates by analyzing case studies related to the evolvement of Brazilian pig production from the 1960s to date. The thesis proposes, as one of its key findings, the 'streams of directionality' concept. In doing so, it offers a more fine-grained comprehension of how directionality unfolds in agri-food systems by 1) arguing that the guidance directionality exerts on agri-food systems is multifaceted, and 2) implying that its multifaceted guidance unfolds through different levels and domains. Drawing upon the streams of directionality concept, this thesis offers a double understanding of synchronization in the steering of change. Moreover, it argues that there is a need to pay explicit public policy attention to build systemic governance elements to promote the synchronization or desynchronization of the guiding forces linked to directionality. &nbsp

Abstract

Birthweight is associated with health outcomes across the life course, DNA methylation may be an underlying mechanism. In this meta-analysis of epigenome-wide association studies of 8,825 neonates from 24 birth cohorts in the Pregnancy And Childhood Epigenetics Consortium, we find that DNA methylation in neonatal blood is associated with birthweight at 914 sites, with a difference in birthweight ranging from −183 to 178 grams per 10% increase in methylation (PBonferroni < 1.06 x 10−7). In additional analyses in 7,278 participants, <1.3% of birthweight-associated differential methylation is also observed in childhood and adolescence, but not adulthood. Birthweight-related CpGs overlap with some Bonferroni-significant CpGs that were previously reported to be related to maternal smoking (55/914, p = 6.12 x 10−74) and BMI in pregnancy (3/914, p = 1.13x10−3), but not with those related to folate levels in pregnancy. Whether the associations that we observe are causal or explained by confounding or fetal growth influencing DNA methylation (i.e. reverse causality) requires further research.

Abstract

This publication is the first scoping study aimed at compiling existing evaluation cases in the field of Communication for Development as applied to agricultural and rural development initiatives. It draws on a literature review and 19 cases across Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean comparing evidence of evaluative approaches, methods and outcomes of communication programmes and rural communication services. It also provides clear indications about the need to build evidence that inform policy to advance inclusive rural communication services.

Expecting no solution from the municipality, they decided to take care of it themselves and tackled these two problems with one solution: using the technology of biodigestion to produce energy from municipal food waste - a perfect example of the urban food-waste-energy nexus.

Abstract

Agriculture dominates the Afghan economy, providing an income to 61% of the households. 44% of the labour force is engaged in agriculture and women make up to 65% of this labour force. One of the priorities of the Afghan government is to develop agricultural high-school education, vocational education and training and agricultural extension services. In line with these efforts, the National Agriculture Education College (NAEC) was established in 2011, which provides a two-year teacher training course, targeted at prospective teachers for agricultural high schools (AHS).Even though women participate actively in the agricultural sector, they are underrepresented in agricultural education and extension in Afghanistan. This is also seen at NAEC, where the number of female students remains very low and as a consequence limited female teachers are available for the AHS. This paper analyses the situation at NAEC and explores the alternatives that are currently deployed by NAEC to increase access to agricultural education for women and girls: Targeted recruitment policies to increase the number of girls enrolling at NAEC. This will contribute to more female teachers at the agricultural high schools, thereby setting an example and creating role models for other women and girls. Gender sensitive curricula to prevent gender stereotyping to be reproduced in the schooling system. Distance education for rural girls and women to overcome social and cultural barriers they face in pursuing education.It is realized that the specific needs of girls and women have to be taken into account when designing gender sensitive curricula. Even more in distance education the specific needs of women in agriculture requires consideration. Generally it can be said that developing and designing distance education is a challenge, which is worthwhile to investigate further.

Abstract

Climate change is affecting the livelihoods of rural African populations. In fact, farmers, whose livelihoods depend on agriculture, are likely to bear the brunt of climate change impacts. The extent to which these impacts are felt depends in large part on the extent of adaptation in response to climate change. The aim ofthis paper is to assess Beninese farmers‟ perceptions on climate and adaptation strategies for information and knowledge that may guide decision making and draw the attention on the need to integrate local knowledge in climate adaptation. Focus group discussions and semi-structured interviews were organized with 51 farmers representing diverse farming experiences and farmland positions. In order to make the link between farmers‟ perception on the seasons prediction regarding to plant observation, we identified and observed phenology phases of five Baobab and five cashew plants based on their geographical distribution in the study area. Collected data were analyzed by using the agricultural adaptation and perception model and the dynamic system of knowledge, perception and adaptation. The study shows that farmers have different perceptions of climate change, but at the same time are almost unanimous about the changing of rainfall frequency, which is described as “rain seasons start late and end early”. The study revealed that the Baobab plants flowering phase seems to coincide with the rainy season and confirmed farmers‟ knowledge about good rainy season detecting. The article further lays outthat farmers have developed a range of adaptation strategies, which are situated within the three distinguished spaces; the space of agricultural practices, the space of livelihood diversification, and the space of local culture and learning. The study suggests that understanding farmer‟s perceptions and practices and using them as a starting point for adaptation to climate change could help policy makers to formulate sustainable adaptation strategies.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia has a great potential in the development of digital health technologies. However, several challenges might also arise in hand with the development of telemedicine. Aims: We aimed to conduct a literature review of the use of telemedicine in Indonesia in order to know how the start is, the development, and future considerations of its usage. Methods: From the digital databases of PubMed, Google Scholar, and Neliti (Indonesia's Research Repository), each author completed literature searches of telemedicine in Indonesia from 1985 to 2021. Results: A total of 8 studies were included in current literature review. In 1985-1987, Indonesia undertook the first satellite-based telemedicine. During the early twenty-first century, rapid improvements in information technology have expanded to other industries, including health care through telemedicine. Covid-19 dilemma compels physicians to adopt. Through telemedicine, many is experienced the benefit during the pandemic. However, in developing telemedicine system for the future, the use of telemedicine has several challenges, namely related to human resources, infrastructure and ethical regulations. Conclusion: When telehealth is successfully implemented in Indonesia, it will benefit both the developer and the consumer. Despite the benefits, the challenge of implementing and developing a comprehensive eHealth environment in Indonesia might be seen as tremendous, given that the country is currently developing its infrastructure.
