Abstract

Crop rotations in the northern Great Plains of North America increasingly include corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.). Use of cover crops, while less extensive, is also increasing given their purported agronomic and environmental benefits. To date, soil responses to the inclusion of corn, soybean, and cover crops in rainfed cropping systems have not been well documented in the region. Therefore, soil properties were evaluated 6 years after establishment of three crop rotations (spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–soybean (SW–S), spring wheat–corn–soybean (SW–C–S), and spring wheat–corn–cover crop (SW–C–cc)) each split by no and minimum tillage on a Dark Brown Chernozem near Mandan, ND, USA. Soil responses to treatments were subtle and exclusive to the 0–7.6 cm depth. Soil pH was lower in SW–S than SW–C–cc (5.28 vs. 5.48; P = 0.05), SO4-S was greater under SW–C–cc than SW–C–S (13.4 vs. 11.6 g S kg−1; P = 0.03), exchangeable K was greater under SW–C–S and SW–C–cc than SW–S (0.83 cmol kg−1 vs. 0.52 cmol kg−1; P = 0.05), and water-stable aggregates were greater in SW–S than SW–C–S (26% vs. 19%; P = 0.08). Soil organic carbon (SOC) and total N did not differ among crop rotations or between tillage treatments, while particulate organic matter N was greater under no tillage compared to minimum tillage (P = 0.08). Between 2012 and 2018, soil pH decreased and SOC increased under SW–C–S. Frequent monitoring of near-surface soil conditions in rotations with soybean every other year is recommended. 14 páginas.- 6 figuras.- 53 referencias, Understanding the chemical composition of our planet's crust was one of the biggest questions of the 20th century. More than 100 years later, we are still far from understanding the global patterns in the bioavailability and spatial coupling of elements in topsoils worldwide, despite their importance for the productivity and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we measured the bioavailability and coupling of thirteen macro- and micronutrients and phytotoxic elements in topsoils (3–8 cm) from a range of terrestrial ecosystems across all continents (∼10,000 observations) and in response to global change manipulations (∼5,000 observations). For this, we incubated between 1 and 4 pairs of anionic and cationic exchange membranes per site for a mean period of 53 days. The most bioavailable elements (Ca, Mg, and K) were also amongst the most abundant in the crust. Patterns of bioavailability were biome-dependent and controlled by soil properties such as pH, organic matter content and texture, plant cover, and climate. However, global change simulations resulted in important alterations in the bioavailability of elements. Elements were highly coupled, and coupling was predictable by the atomic properties of elements, particularly mass, mass to charge ratio, and second ionization energy. Deviations from the predictable coupling-atomic mass relationship were attributed to global change and agriculture. 14. The role of conservation agriculture practices in mitigating N2O emissions: A meta-analysis.

Abstract

Conservation agriculture is often assumed to reduce soil N2O emissions. Yet, studies analyzing the specific effect of conservation agriculture practices on N2O emissions give contradictory results. Herein, we synthesized a comprehensive database on the three main conservation agriculture practices (cover crops, diversified crop rotations, and no-till and/or reduced tillage (NT/RT)) to elucidate the role of conservation practices on N2O emissions. Further, we used a random meta-forest approach to identify the most important predictors of the effects of these practices on soil N2O emissions. Averaged across all comparisons, NT/RT significantly decreased soil N2O emissions by 11% (95% CI: –19 to –1%) compared to conventional tillage. The reductions due to NT/RT were more commonly observed in humid climates and in soils with an initial carbon content < 20 g kg–1. The implementation of cover crops and diversified crop rotations led to variable effects on soil N2O emissions. Cover crops were more likely to reduce soil N2O emissions at neutral soil pH, and in soils with intermediate carbon (~20 g kg–1) and nitrogen (~3 g kg–1) contents. Diversified crop rotations tended to increase soil N2O emissions in temperate regions and neutral to alkaline soils. Our results provide a comprehensive predictive framework to understand the conditions in which the adoption of various conservation agriculture practices can contribute to climate change mitigation. Combining these results with a similar mechanistic understanding of conservation agriculture impacts on ecosystem services and crop production will pave the way for a wider adoption globally of these management practices. Soil carbon dioxide (CO2) efflux, crop biomass, and soil organic matter (SOM) pools were monitored over 3 years in an ICL rotation (corn [Zea mays L.]/soybean [Glycine max L.]–spring wheat [Triticum aestivum L.] + cover crop–cover crop) with fall grazing, a conventional cropping system rotation (corn–spring wheat–soybean) and fall grazed and ungrazed mixed‐grass pasture near Mandan, ND. Cropped treatments were under no‐till management. Annual aboveground crop residue biomass C was similar in the ICL and conventional systems, while less in the grazed pasture (4.18, 3.83, and 1.21 Mg C ha−1 year−1 respectively; p = 0.039). Annual soil CO2 efflux was greater in the ICL, grazed, and ungrazed pasture systems than the conventional system (8.05, 8.73, 8.25, and 5.81 Mg C ha−1 year−1, respectively; p < 0.001). Among crop phases in the ICL and conventional cropping systems, cover crops contributed to greater CO2 efflux in the spring and fall. SOM and C mineralization were greater at 0–5 cm in the ICL system compared to the conventional cropping system (6.6% vs. 6.3%, p = 0.028 and 248 vs. 184 mg CO2–C kg−1, p < 0.001, respectively). Interseeded cover crops in ICL systems can contribute increased root respiration and enhanced SOM pools relative to conventional cropping systems under semiarid conditions. 21. Cover Crop Chart: An Intuitive Educational Resource for Extension Professionals

Abstract

Interest in cover crops by agricultural producers has increased the need for information regarding the suitability of crops for addressing different production and natural resource goals. To help address this need, staff at the USDA-ARS Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory developed a decision aid called the Cover Crop Chart (CCC). Visually analogous to the periodic table, the CCC includes information on 46 crop species within a free downloadable Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The CCC serves as a useful educational resource for agriculturalists learning about cover crops for the first time.

Abstract

Phosphorus (P) budgets can be useful tools for understanding nutrient cycling and quantifying the effectiveness of nutrient management planning and policies; however, uncertainties in agricultural nutrient budgets are not often quantitatively assessed. The objective of this study was to evaluate uncertainty in P fluxes (fertilizer/manure application, atmospheric deposition, irrigation, crop removal, surface runoff, and leachate) and the propagation of these uncertainties to annual P budgets. Data from 56 cropping systems in the P‐FLUX database, which spans diverse rotations and landscapes across the United States and Canada, were evaluated. Results showed that across cropping systems, average annual P budget was 22.4 kg P ha−1(range = −32.7 to 340.6 kg P ha−1), with an average uncertainty of 13.1 kg P ha−1(range = 1.0–87.1 kg P ha−1). Fertilizer/manure application and crop removal were the largest P fluxes across cropping systems and, as a result, accounted for the largest fraction of uncertainty in annual budgets (61% and 37%, respectively). Remaining fluxes individually accounted for <2% of the budget uncertainty. Uncertainties were large enough that determining whether P was increasing, decreasing, or not changing was inconclusive in 39% of the budgets evaluated. Findings indicate that more careful and/or direct measurements of inputs, outputs, and stocks are needed. Recommendations for minimizing uncertainty in P budgets based on the results of the study were developed. Quantifying, communicating, and constraining uncertainty in budgets among production systems and multiple geographies is critical for engaging stakeholders, developing local and national strategies for P reduction, and informing policy.
