The 3rd edition of the international summer school “Close-range Sensing Techniques in Alpine terrain” took place in Obergurgl, Austria, in June 2019. This article reports on results from the training and seminar activities and the outcome of student questionnaire survey. Comparison between the recent edition and the past edition in 2017 shows no significant differences on the level of satisfaction on organizational and training aspects. Gender balance was present both in candidates and in the outcome of selections. Selection was based on past research activities and on topic relevance. The majority of trainees were therefore doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers, but also motivated master students participated. The training took place through keynotes, lectures, seminars, in the field with hands-on surveys followed by data analysis in the lab, and teamwork for preparing a final team presentation over different assignments.

We discriminated different successional forest stages, forest degradation, and land use classes in the Tapajós National Forest (TNF), located in the Central Brazilian Amazon. We used full polarimetric images from ALOS/PALSAR-2 that have not yet been tested for land use and land cover (LULC) classification, neither for forest degradation classification in the TNF. Our specific objectives were: (1) to test the potential of ALOS/PALSAR-2 full polarimetric images to discriminate LULC classes and forest degradation; (2) to determine the optimum subset of attributes to be used in LULC classification and forest degradation studies; and (3) to evaluate the performance of Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) supervised classifications to discriminate LULC classes and forest degradation. PALSAR-2 images from 2015 and 2016 were processed to generate Radar Vegetation Index, Canopy Structure Index, Volume Scattering Index, Biomass Index, and Cloude?Pottier, van Zyl, Freeman?Durden, and Yamaguchi polarimetric decompositions. To determine the optimum subset, we used principal component analysis in order to select the best attributes to discriminate the LULC classes and forest degradation, which were classified by RF. Based on the variable importance score, we selected the four first attributes for 2015, alpha, anisotropy, volumetric scattering, and double-bounce, and for 2016, entropy, anisotropy, surface scattering, and biomass index, subsequently classified by SVM. Individual backscattering indexes and polarimetric decompositions were also considered in both RF and SVM classifiers. Yamaguchi decomposition performed by RF presented the best results, with an overall accuracy (OA) of 76.9% and 83.3%, and Kappa index of 0.70 and 0.80 for 2015 and 2016, respectively. The optimum subset classified by RF showed an OA of 75.4% and 79.9%, and Kappa index of 0.68 and 0.76 for 2015 and 2016, respectively. RF exhibited superior performance in relation to SVM in both years. Polarimetric attributes exhibited an adequate capability to discriminate forest degradation and classes of different ecological succession from the ones with less vegetation cover. Automatic feature matching is a crucial step in Structure-from-Motion (SfM) applications for 3D reconstruction purposes. From an historical perspective we can say now that SIFT was the enabling technology that made SfM a successful and fully automated pipeline. SIFT was the ancestor of a wealth of detector/descriptor methods that are now available. Various research activities have tried to benchmark detector/descriptors operators, but a clear outcome is difficult to be drawn. This paper presents an ISPRS Scientific Initiative aimed at providing the community with an educational open-source tool (called PhotoMatch) for tie point extractions and image matching. Several enhancement and decolorization methods can be initially applied to an image dataset in order to improve the successive feature extraction steps. Then different detector/descriptor combinations are possible, coupled with different matching strategies and quality control metrics. Examples and results show the implemented functionality of PhotoMatch which has also a tutorial for shortly explaining the implemented methods.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o desempenho dos classificadores digitais SVM e K?NN para a classificação orientada a objeto em imagens Landsat?8, aplicados ao mapeamento de uso e cobertura do solo da Alta Bacia do Rio Piracicaba?Jaguari, MG. A etapa de pré?processamento contou com a conversão radiométrica e a minimização dos efeitos atmosféricos. Em seguida, foi feita a fusão das bandas multiespectrais (30 m) com a banda pancromática (15 m). Com base em composições RGB e inspeções de campo, definiramse 15 classes de uso e cobertura do solo. Para a segmentação de bordas, aplicaram-se os limiares 10 e 60 para as configurações de segmentação e união no aplicativo ENVI. A classificação foi feita usando SVM e K?NN. Ambos os classificadores apresentaram elevados valores de índice Kappa (k): 0,92 para SVM e 0,86 para K?NN, significativamente diferentes entre si a 95% de probabilidade. Uma significativa melhoria foi observada para SVM, na classificação correta de diferentes tipologias florestais. A classificação orientada a objetos é amplamente aplicada em imagens de alta resolução espacial; no entanto, os resultados obtidos no presente trabalho mostram a robustez do método também para imagens de média resolução espacial.

In order to reach the goal of reliably solving Earth monitoring tasks, automated and efficient machine learning methods are necessary for large-scale scene analysis and interpretation. A typical bottleneck of supervised learning approaches is the availability of accurate (manually) labeled training data, which is particularly important to train state-of-the-art (deep) learning methods. We present SemCity Toulouse, a publicly available, very high resolution, multi-spectral benchmark data set for training and evaluation of sophisticated machine learning models. The benchmark acts as test bed for single building instance segmentation which has been rarely considered before in densely built urban areas. Additional information is provided in the form of a multi-class semantic segmentation annotation covering the same area plus an adjacent area 3 times larger. The data set addresses interested researchers from various communities such as photogrammetry and remote sensing, but also computer vision and machine learning.
