Abstract

In natural spruce stands, a change of generation is usually initiated by wind or bark beetle disturbances. We combined semi-temporary monitoring plots, remote sensing, and GIS in order to understand and model these processes. Sub plots, called “active”, were located in areas with a high probability of bark beetle or wind disturbances. The optimal location of these plots is usually at an active forest edge, i.e., the zone of maximal change in bark beetle abundance over time, corresponding to the border between wind-damaged or bark beetle-attacked parts and undisturbed parts of a forest stand. The key variable investigated was tree mortality caused by bark beetles. Other variables were similar to those recorded in traditional forest monitoring. Tree defense indicators (resin flow, phenolic compounds) and reaction of a tree to bark beetle inoculation were measured. Terrestrial data were then combined with remote sensing data. Time series of satellite images were analyzed in order to define the pattern of wind and bark beetle damages. Weather monitoring data were used for predicting bark beetle and water stress development. All of the information was integrated in a GIS-based system and future bark beetle infestations were predicted. In this paper, we review previous studies and conclude that: (1) the hypotheses of habitat selection (non-host volatiles and semiochemical diversity) and location of moderately-stressed host trees are confirmed, although further work about olfactory orientation and host resistance is needed;(2) reactions of trees to bark beetle attack can be predicted by monitoring several parameters, e.g., air temperature and tree physiology; (3) data from ground monitoring can be integrated with GIS and remote sensing systems for bark beetle prognosis and management at the habitat and landscape levels.

The role of geographic distances, of physical barriers to dispersal and of host tree availability on the spatial subdivision of the two species, bark beetle Tomicus piniperda and the pine processionary moth (PPM) Thaumetopoea pityocampa, with different ecological strategies are assessed. The results have shown that the two taxa have contrasting effective dispersal rates per generation and reflect the different selection pressures acting on individual fitness through different strategies of host use.

International audience; Converting fossil-based energy systems into carbon-neutral systems is an essential strategy to reach targets set by the Kyoto Protocol. For nations with a forestry industry, bioenergy based on logging residues or slash harvesting has a huge potential for development. However, forest fuel harvesting may have ecological consequences, notably for saproxylic biodiversity. Indeed, it reduces the volume of deadwood and is likely to alter the deadwood profile. However the consequences of such harvesting on biotic assemblages in temperate forests remains poorly documented. We compared the species richness and composition of saproxylic beetle assemblages among different types of logging residues. We asked if logging residues have a beetle fauna of conservation interest. Samples of logging residues were collected in 60 cutting areas, located in 12 forests from northern and south-eastern France. Our sampling design crossed four main factors describing deadwood type or environmental conditions: tree species (Quercus sp, Fagus sp, Carpinus sp, Picea abies), diameter class (5cm, 10 cm), age class (1 year after logging, more than 5 years after logging) and stand conditions. Four felling types were studied: young improvement cutting, mature improvement cutting, regeneration cut and coppice cutting. On the basis of previous boreal results, we hypothesized that tree species and diameter are the most important variables structuring saproxylic biodiversity. Our results will lead us to discuss the role of slash retention in maintaining the saproxylic biodiversity in temperate forests.

Συγκριτικές μελέτες σε συνθήκες εργαστηρίου διεξήχθησαν με σκοπό την διευκρίνηση των διατροφικών και ωοθετικών προτιμήσεων των ενηλίκων αυτού του εντόμου καθώς και της ανάπτυξης των προνυμφών του στα P. sylvestris και P. pinaster. Η διατροφή και η ωοτοκία βρέθηκαν στατιστικά πιο σημαντικές στο P. sylvestris αλλά καμία διαφορά δεν βρέθηκε στην επιβίωση των προνυμφών στα δύο είδη πεύκου. Οι προνύμφες έφτασαν στην 4η ηλικία νωρίτερα στο P. sylvestris από ότι στο P. pinaster. Τα αποτελέσματα της παρούσης μελέτης ισχυροποιούν τις υποψίες για μια γρήγορη μελλοντική εξάπλωση του νηματώδη σε ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη., Considering the key role of Monochamus galloprovincialis (Olivier) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) in the dispersion of the pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Bührer) Nickle (Nematoda: Aphelenchoidea), in Europe, defining the host spectrum and preference of M. galloprovincialis is of primary importance for forest management. Therefore, comparative studies under laboratory conditions were performed in order to define the feeding and oviposition preferences of M. galloprovincialis adults as well as the larval development on Pinus sylvestris and Pinus pinaster. Both nutrition and oviposition were significantly higher on P. sylvestris. However, no difference was found when comparing larval survival on the two Pinus species even though larvae attended the fourth instar earlier when reared on P. sylvestris than on P. pinaster. The results of this study reinforce the suspicions of a future rapid propagation of the nematode, by M. galloprovincialis, into the Pine forests all over Europe.

International audience; The phylogeography of the bark beetle Ips typographus was assessed using five microsatellite markers. Twenty-eight populations were sampled throughout Europe on the host tree Picea abies. I. typographus showed very low levels of genetic diversity, and the study revealed a lack of genetic structure across Europe. No significant barrier to gene flow was found, even though P. abies has a fragmented distribution. A weak but significant effect of isolation by distance was found. These results suggest a high dispersal capacity of I. typographus, which leads to low genetic differentiation between populations. Its high dispersal capacity is likely to have prevented I. typographus from developing important local adaptations to its host, which would have influenced its genetic structure. The nuclear data was compared to previously published mitochondrial data that showed strong differentiation between Central-Northern European populations and Russian-Baltic populations, and a founder effect in Scandinavia, probably reflecting the postglacial history of I. typographus. Discrepancies between nuclear and mitochondrial markers could be due to the maternal inheritance of mitochondrial DNA, and to sex-biased dispersal in I. typographus. The overall low genetic diversity observed on both markers on a large geographical scale is discussed

Abstract

International audience; Phylogeographic studies are often focused on temperate European species with relict footholds in the Mediterranean region. Past climatic oscillations usually induced range contractions and expansions from refugial areas located in southern Europe, and spatial distribution of genetic diversity show that northward expansions were usually pioneer-like. Actually, few studies have focused on circum-Mediterranean species, which probably were not influenced in the same way by climatic oscillations. We present the phylogeography of the bark beetle Tomicus destruens, which is restricted to the whole Mediterranean basin and the Atlantic coasts of North Africa and Portugal. We systematically sequenced 617 bp of the mitochondrial genes COI and COII for 42 populations (N = 219). Analysis revealed 53 haplotypes geographically structured in two clades, namely eastern and western clades, that diverged during the Pleistocene. A contact zone was identified along the Adriatic coast of Italy. Interestingly, we found contrasting levels of genetic structure within each clade. The eastern group was characterized by a significant phylogeographic pattern and low levels of gene flow, whereas the western group barely showed a spatial structure in haplotype distribution. Moreover, the main pine hosts were different between groups, with the Aleppo-brutia complex in the east and the maritime pine in the west. Potential roles of host species, climatic parameters and geographical barriers are discussed and the phylogeographic patterns are compared to classical models of postglacial recolonization in Europe

Abstract

Ophiostoma ips is a common fungal associate of various conifer-infesting bark beetles in their native ranges and has been introduced into non-native pine plantations in the Southern Hemisphere. In this study, we used 10 microsatellite markers to investigate the population biology of O. ips in native (Cuba, France, Morocco and USA) and non-native (Australia, Chile and South Africa) areas to characterize host specificity, reproductive behaviour, and the potential origin as well as patterns of spread of the fungus and its insect vectors. The markers resolved a total of 41 alleles and 75 haplotypes. Higher genetic diversity was found in the native populations than in the introduced populations. Based on the origin of the insect vectors, the populations of O. ips in Australia would be expected to reflect a North American origin, and those in Chile and South Africa to reflect a European origin. However, most alleles observed in the native European population were also found in the native North American population; only the allele frequencies among the populations varied. This admixture made it impossible to confirm the origin of the introduced Southern Hemisphere (SH) populations of O. ips. There was also no evidence for specificity of the fungus to particular bark beetle vectors or hosts. Although O. ips is thought to be mainly self-fertilizing, evidence for recombination was found in the four native populations surveyed. The higher genetic diversity in the North American than in the European population suggests that North America could be the possible source region of O. ips.
