Abstract Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a common cancer that causes millions of deaths worldwide each year. At present, numerous studies have confirmed that intestinal microbes play a crucial role in the process of CRC. Additionally, studies have shown that CRC can be divided into several consensus molecular subtypes (CMS) based on tumor gene expression, and CRC microbiomes have been reported related to CMS. However, most previous studies on intestinal microbiome of CRC have only compared patients with healthy controls, without classifying of CRC patients based on intestinal microbial composition. Results In this study, a CRC cohort including 339 CRC samples and 333 healthy controls was selected as the discovery set, and the CRC samples were divided into two subgroups (234 Subgroup1 and 105 Subgroup2) using PAM clustering algorithm based on the intestinal microbial composition. IntroductionThis study examined the impact of biochar application on agricultural productivity and greenhouse gas emissions in irrigated regions of northern Xinjiang. The objective of this study was to assess the impact of nitrogen fertilizer and biochar levels on soil respiration rate, enzyme activity, and spring wheat yield.Materials and methodsThe experiment employed a randomized block design comprising two nitrogen fertilizer levels (N1: 300 kg·hm-2 and N2: 255 kg·hm-2) and four biochar levels (B0: 0 kg·hm-2, B1: 10×103 kg·hm-2, B2: 20×103 kg·hm-2, and B3: 30×103 kg·hm-2). This resulted in eight groups (N1B0, N1B1, N1B2, N1B3, N2B0, N2B1, N2B2, and N2B3), each replicated three times.Results and discussionThe findings indicated that the N2B2 group exhibited a reduction in soil CO2 emissions, with a cumulative decrease of 4.42% in CO2 emissions compared to the N2B0 control. The application of biochar and/or nitrogen fertilizer, particularly in combination, was observed to increase soil urease, sucrase, and catalase activities. The N2B2 group exhibited a spring wheat yield of 8301.35 kg·hm-2, representing a 22.1% increase over the N1B0 group. This improvement was attributed to the capacity of biochar to regulate soil water content variability, stabilize soil aggregate composition, mitigate organic carbon mineralization, and reduce farmland carbon emissions. Furthermore, biochar’s nitrogen fixation provided essential nutrients for soil microorganisms, thereby enhancing enzymatic reactions and promoting crop growth.ConclusionIn conclusion, the N2B2 regime was determined to be the optimal approach for spring wheat cultivation in irrigated regions of northern Xinjiang, resulting in enhanced crop productivity and the mitigation of carbon emissions. Nevertheless, further investigation of its long-term impact on farmland is recommended.

Abstract Background Studies have found that high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels are linked to a variety of diseases. However, evidence for the relationship between stress urinary incontinence (SUI) and HDL-C remain limited. Methods 590 eligible women were enrolled. Basic characteristic, gynecological examinations and blood sampling were collected. The examination of the possible link between HDL-C and SUI was done using univariate and multivariate logistic regression. Feature importance ranking and Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were performed to further evaluate the association between HDL-C and SUI in women. Results A significant association was found between HDL-C and SUI in women, revealing higher HDL-C levels were related to a lower risk of SUI (OR 0.238; 95%CI: 0.091–0.623; P

Abstract Metastasis accounts for the majority of cases of cancer recurrence and death in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Farnesoid X Receptor (FXR) is a bile acid nuclear receptor that was recently found to be upregulated in NSCLC tissues. However, whether and how FXR regulates NSCLC metastasis remains unclear. In the present study, it was found that FXR promoted the migration, invasion, and angiogenic ability of NSCLC cells in vitro, and increased NSCLC metastasis in a mouse model in vivo. Mechanistic investigation demonstrated that FXR specifically bound to the promoters of IL-6ST and IL-6 genes to upregulate their transcription, thereby leading to activation of the Jak2/STAT3 signaling pathway, which facilitated tumor migration, invasion, and angiogenesis in NSCLC. Notably, Z-guggulsterone, a natural FXR inhibitor, significantly reduced FXRhigh NSCLC metastasis, and decreased the expression of FXR, IL-6, IL-6ST, and p-STAT3 in the mouse model. Clinical analysis verified that FXR was positively correlated with IL-6, IL-6ST and p-STAT3 expression in NSCLC patients, and was indicative of a poor prognosis. Collectively, these results highlight a novel FXR-induced IL-6/IL-6ST/Jak2/STAT3 axis in NSCLC metastasis, and a promising therapeutic means for treating FXRhigh metastatic NSCLC.

Background and purpose: The Bushenyiqi decoction (BYD), a contemporary prescription of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has been observed to significantly ameliorate asthma symptoms in patients based on clinical observations. Although multi-component and multi-target characteristics are important attributes of BYD treatment, its pharmacological effect on asthma and the underlying mechanism of action remain unclear.Method: Network pharmacology: the asthma-related genes were retrieved from the GeneCards and OMIM database. The active constituents of BYD and their corresponding target genes were collected from the TCMSP database. The underlying pathways associated with overlapping targets between BYD and asthma were identified through GO (Gene Ontology) and KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) enrichment analysis. Experimental validation: pulmonary function tests, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), Hematoxylin and eosin (HE), periodic acid-Schiff (PAS), and Masson’s trichrome stainings were conducted to validate the efficacy of BYD in ameliorating airway inflammation in allergic asthma mice. Western blot (WB) and molecular docking were performed to confirm the involvement of the underlying pathway in BYD treatment of asthma.Results: The results of animal experiments demonstrated that BYD may improve airway responsiveness and suppress airway inflammation in allergic asthma mice. The network pharmacological analysis revealed the involvement of 11 potentially key active components, 9 potential key targets, and the phosphatidylinositol3 kinase-RAC-α serine/threonine-protein kinase (PI3K/AKT) signaling pathway in the mechanism of action of BYD for asthma treatment. Our findings have confirmed that BYD effectively alleviated airway inflammation by targeting interleukin 6 (IL-6), epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), and hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF1A), with quercetin, kaempferol, and luteolin performing as the pivotal active constituents. BYD may potentially reduce inflammatory cell infiltration in lung tissues by regulating the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway.Conclusion: In conclusion, the integration of network pharmacology and biological experiments has demonstrated that key constituents of BYD, such as quercetin, kaempferol, and luteolin, exhibit targeted effects on IL-6, EGFR, and HIF1A in combating asthma-related inflammation through inhibition of the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. The findings of this investigation provide evidence supporting the effectiveness of TCM’s “bushenyiqi” therapy in asthma management, as corroborated by contemporary medical technology.

Picture in online customer reviews conveys detailed product information to help potential customers make purchase decisions, which is an important form of digital data. Therefore, understanding the predictors of picture sharing in online customer reviews is crucial for retail businesses to achieve digital transformation strategies for competitive advantage, high quality service and sustainable performance. By analyzing 6211 online customer reviews of 16 products crawled from the famous online shopping site JD.com in China, this study tests the effects of reviewer rank (who), product type (what), time interval (when), review device (where), consumption satisfaction (why), and the level of involvement (how) on whether customers sharing picture and picture count in online customer reviews based on the 5W1H analysis framework. The results show that: (1) with or without picture and picture count both influence the helpfulness of online customer reviews; (2) product type, time interval, review device, consumption satisfaction and the level of involvement significantly affect whether consumers share picture; and (3) review device, consumption satisfaction and the level of involvement significantly affect picture count. The findings can help managers manage picture reviews to improve business performance.

Context Fibraurea recisa Pierre. (Menispermaceae) (FR) is a traditional Chinese medicine known as “Huangteng.” The total alkaloids of FR (AFR) are the main active ingredients. However, the pharmacological effects of AFR in the treatment of depression have not been reported.Objectives This study investigates the antidepressant effects of AFR by network pharmacology and verification experiments.Materials and methods Compound-Target-Pathway (C-P-T) network of FR and depression was constructed through network pharmacology. In vitro, HT-22 cells were treated with corticosterone (CORT) solution (0.35 mg/mL), then AFR (0.05 mg/mL) solution and inhibitor AZD6244 (14 μM/mL) or BAY11-7082 (10 μM/mL) were added, respectively. The cell viability was detected by CCK-8. In vivo, C57BL/6 mice were divided into 5 groups, namely the normal group, the CUMS group, the AFR (400 mg/kg) group, and the 2 groups that were simultaneously administered the inhibitory group AZD6244 (8 mg/kg) and BAY11-7082 (5 mg/kg). Western blotting was used to assess the expression level of the proteins.Results AFR could protect HT-22 cells from CORT-induced damage and increase the cell viability from 49.12 ± 3.4% to 87.26 ± 1.5%. Moreover, AFR significantly increased the levels of BDNF (1.3, 1.4-fold), p-ERK (1.4, 1.2-fold) and p-CERB (1.6, 1.3-fold), and decreased the levels of NLRP3 (11.3%, 31.6%), ASC (19.2%, 34.2%) and caspase-1 (18.0%, 27.6%) in HT-22 cells and the hippocampus, respectively.Discussion and conclusions AFR can improve depressive-like behaviours and can develop drugs for depression treatment. Further studies are needed to validate its potential in clinical medicine.

Ultrasound (US) is considered as a secure external stimulation for different biomedical applications because it is non-invasive, non-toxic and it brings no radiation pollution. Compared with traditional ultrasonography application, US has now attracted more and more attention for cancer therapy. It treats cancer in deeper tissues because it penetrates far than light does. New types of nanomaterials have been developed for US triggered cancer therapy. The study on emerging cancer therapeutic modality triggered by US is also increasing, e.g., high intensity-focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy, sonodynamic therapy (SDT), and US-mediated drug delivery. The research on current advances in nanomaterials-based and US-triggered cancer treatments have been discussed in detail in this review, especially the underlying mechanisms for better therapeutic effectiveness. Furthermore, challenges and prospective in the evolution of nanomaterials for the US-based cancer therapy fields were also explained. It is anticipated that our manifestation in this expanding discipline will aid in the advancement of US-based basic research and therapeutic applications.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), such as programmed death-1 (PD-1), programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1), cytotoxic T lymphocyte antigen 4 (CTLA-4) antibodies, etc, have revolutionized cancer treatment strategies, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). While these immunotherapy agents have achieved durable clinical benefits in a subset of NSCLC patients, they bring in a variety of immune-related adverse events (irAEs), which involve cardiac, pulmonary, gastrointestinal, endocrine and dermatologic system damage, ranging from mild to life-threatening. Thus, there is an urgent need to better understand the occurrence of irAEs and predict patients who are susceptible to those toxicities. Herein, we provide a comprehensive review of what is updated about the clinical manifestations, mechanisms, predictive biomarkers and management of ICI-associated toxicity in NSCLC. In addition, this review also provides perspective directions for future research of NSCLC-related irAEs.

Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a major public health problem, and gut microbiota dysbiosis has been implicated in the emergence of T2D in humans. Dietary interventions can indirectly influence the health status of patients with type 2 diabetes through their modulatory effects on the intestinal microbiota. In recent years, fecal microbiota transplantation is becoming familiar as a new medical treatment that can rapidly improve intestinal health. We conducted a 90-day controlled open-label trial to evaluate the health improvement ability of a specially designed diet, and the diet combined with fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). According to our study, both diet and diet plus FMT treatments showed great potential in controlling blood glucose and blood pressure levels. Sequencing the V4 region of 16S rRNA gene on the Illumina MiniSeq platform revealed a shift of intestinal microbial community in T2D patients, and the changes were also observed in response to the treatments. FMT changed the gut microbiota more quickly than diet. Beneficial bacterium, such as Bifidobacterium, increased along the study and was negatively correlated with blood glucose, blood pressure, blood lipid and BMI. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB), Bilophila and Desulfovibrio, decreased significantly after treatment, showed a positive correlation with blood glucose indices. Thus, the specially designed diet is beneficial to improve blood glucose control in diabetic patients, it also showed the potential to reverse dyslipidemia and dysarteriotony.

BackgroundImmune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have changed the treatment pattern of advanced and metastatic NSCLC. A series of ICI based therapies have emerged in the first-line treatment field, but the comparative efficacy was unclear.MethodWe searched multiple databases and abstracts of major conference proceedings up to Apri1, 2022 for phase III randomised trials of advanced driver-gene wild type NSCLC patients receiving first-line therapy. Outcomes analyzed included progression free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and et al.ResultsThirty-two double-blind RCTs were included, involving 18,656 patients assigned to 22 ICI-based first-line regimens. A series of ICI regiments (including ICI plus chemotherapy), ICI monotherapy, doublet ICIs, doublet ICIs plus chemotherapy) emerged, and showed significant PFS and OS benefit than chemotherapy and chemotherapy + bevacizumab (BEV) for advanced wild-type NSCLC. In comprehensive terms of PFS, chemoimmunotherapy (CIT) were significantly more effective than ICI monotherapy and doublet ICIs. In terms of OS for patients with non-squamous NSCLC, pembrolizumab containing CIT was associated with a median rank of the best regimens, and followed by Atezolizumab+BEV based CIT; while for OS in patients with squamous NSCLC, Cemiplimab and sintilimab based CIT were the most effective regimens. For more than 2 years follow-up, the atezolizumab, pembrolizumab, nivolumab and durvalumab containing ICI therapy all provide a durable long-term OS benefit over chemotherapy and BEV + chemotherapy.ConclusionsThe findings of the present NMA represent the most comprehensive evidence, which might suggest or provide basis for first-line ICI therapy decision for advanced NSCLC patients without oncogenic driver mutations.

ObjectivesTo assess the benefit of a bariatric surgery in four artificial intelligence-identified metabolic (AIM) subtypes of obesity with respect to the improvement of glucometabolism and the remission of diabetes and hyperinsulinemia.MethodsThis multicenter retrospective study prospectively collected data from five hospitals in China from 2010 to 2021. At baseline 1008 patients who underwent a bariatric surgery were enrolled (median age 31 years; median BMI 38.1kg/m2; 57.40% women) and grouped into the four AIM subtypes. Baseline and follow-up data (506 and 359 patients at 3- and 12-month post-surgery) were collected for longitudinal effect analysis.ResultsOut of the four AIM subgroups, hypometabolic obesity (LMO) group was characterized by decompensated insulin secretion and high incidence of diabetes (99.2%) pre-surgery. After surgery, 62.1% of LMO patients with diabetes achieved remission, lower than the other three subgroups. Still, the bariatric surgery significantly reduced their blood glucose (median HbA1c decreased by 27.2%). The hypermetabolic obesity-hyperinsulinemia (HMO-I) group was characterized by severe insulin resistance and high incidence of hyperinsulinemia (87.8%) pre-surgery, which had been greatly alleviated post-surgery. For both metabolic healthy obesity (MHO) and hypermetabolic obesity-hyperuricemia (HMO-U) groups who showed a relatively healthy glucometabolism pre-surgery, rate of glucometabolic comorbidities improved moderately post-surgery.ConclusionIn terms of glucometabolism, the four AIM subtypes of patients benefited differently from a bariatric surgery, which significantly relieved hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia for the LMO and HMO-I patients, respectively. The AIM-based subtypes may help better inform clinical decisions on bariatric surgery and patient counseling pertaining to post-surgery outcomes.

More and more cancer-associated genes (CAGs) are being identified with the development of biological mechanism research. Integrative analysis of protein-protein interaction (PPI) networks and co-expression patterns of these genes can help identify new disease-associated genes and clarify their importance in specific diseases. This study proposed a PPI network and co-expression integration analysis model (PRNet) to integrate PPI networks and gene co-expression patterns to identify potential risk causative genes for pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PAAD). We scored the importance of the candidate genes by constructing a high-confidence co-expression-based edge-weighted PPI network, extracting protein regulatory sub-networks by random walk algorithm, constructing disease-specific networks based on known CAGs, and scoring the genes of the sub-networks with the PageRank algorithm. The results showed that our screened top-ranked genes were more critical in tumours relative to the known CAGs list and significantly differentiated the overall survival of PAAD patients. These results suggest that the PRNet method of ranking cancer-associated genes can identify new disease-associated genes and is more informative than the original CAGs list, which can help investigators to screen potential biomarkers for validation and molecular mechanism exploration.

Abstract Chronic lung diseases represent a largely global burden whose pathogenesis remains largely unknown. Research increasingly suggests that epigenetic modifications, especially DNA methylation, play a mechanistic role in chronic lung diseases. DNA methylation can affect gene expression and induce various diseases. Of the caveolae in plasma membrane of cell, caveolin‐1 (Cav‐1) is a crucial structural constituent involved in many important life activities. With the increasingly advanced progress of genome‐wide methylation sequencing technologies, the important impact of Cav‐1 DNA methylation has been discovered. The present review overviews the biological characters, functions, and structure of Cav‐1; epigenetic modifications of Cav‐1 in health and disease; expression and regulation of Cav‐1 DNA methylation in the respiratory system and its significance; as well as clinical potential as disease‐specific biomarker and targets for early diagnosis and therapy.

Excessive nitrogen fertilizer usage in agricultural often leads to negative ecological and production gains. Alterations in the physical and chemical properties and microbial community structure of agricultural soils are both the cause and consequence of this process. This study explored the perturbation of soil properties and microorganisms in agricultural soils by different nitrogen levels. Soil total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and total potassium decreased in the shallow soil layer with decreasing nitrogen. Changes in nitrogen affected soil organic matter, pH, bulk density, and water content. However, a moderate reduction in nitrogen did not cause significant yield loss; the increased nitrogen use efficiency was the main reason, attributed to the available phosphorus and potassium. Short-term changes in nitrogen had limited effects on soil microbial community structure. Bacteria were more susceptible to perturbation by nitrogen changes. Nitrogen reduction increased the relative abundance of MND1 (1.21%), RB41 (1.96%), and Sphingomonas (0.72%) and decreased Dongia (0.3%), Chaetomium (0.41%), and Penicillium (0.5%). Nitrogen reduction significantly increased the bacteria functional composition of aerobic ammonia oxidation (4.20%) and nitrification (4.10%) and reduced chemoheterotrophy (2.70%) and fermentation (4.08%). Available phosphorus specifically drove bacterial community structure variation in the shallow soil layers of moderate nitrogen reduction treatments. Steroidobacter, RB41, Gemmatimonas, Ellin6067, Haliangium, and Sphingomonas were the main component nodes in this community structure. These results provide insights into the study of nitrogen and microorganisms in agricultural soils.

The poor performance of single-gene lists for prognostic predictions in independent cohorts has limited their clinical use. Here, we employed a pathway-based approach using embedded biological features to identify reproducible prognostic markers as an alternative. We used pathway activity score, sure independence screening, and K-means clustering analyses to identify and cluster colorectal cancer patients into two distinct subgroups, G2 (aggressive) and G1 (moderate). The differences between these two groups with respect to survival, somatic mutation, pathway activity, and tumor-infiltration by immunocytes were compared. These comparisons revealed that the survival rates in the G2 subgroup were significantly reduced compared to that in the G1 subgroup; further, the mutational burden rates in several oncogenes, including KRAS, DCLK1, and EPHA5, were significantly higher in the G2 subgroup than in the G1 subgroup. The enhanced activity of the critical pathways such as MYC and epithelial-mesenchymal transition may also lead to the progression of colorectal cancer. Taken together, we established a novel prognostic classification system that offers meritorious insights into the hallmarks of colorectal cancer.

Recently, many studies have investigated the role of gene-signature on the prognostic assessment of breast cancer (BC), however, the tumor heterogeneity and sequencing noise have limited the clinical usage of these models. Pathway-based approaches are more stable to the perturbation of certain gene expression. In this study, we constructed a prognostic classifier based on survival-related pathway crosstalk analysis. We estimated pathway’s deregulation scores (PDSs) for samples collected from public databases to select survival-related pathways. After pathway crosstalk analysis, we conducted K-means clustering analysis to cluster the patients into G1 and G2 subgroups. The survival outcome of the G2 subgroup was significantly worse than the G1 subgroup. Internal and external dataset exhibits high consistency with the training dataset. Significant differences were found between G2 and G1 subgroups on pathway activity, gene mutation, immune cell infiltration levels, and in particular immune cells/pathway’s activities were significantly negatively associated with BC patient’s outcomes. In conclusion, we established a novel classifier reflecting the overall survival risk of BC and successfully validated its clinical usage on multiple BC datasets, which could offer clinicians inspiration in formulating the clinical treatment plan.

Muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) is the most common urinary system carcinoma associated with poor outcomes. It is necessary to develop a robust classification system for prognostic prediction of MIBC. Recently, increasing omics data at different levels of MIBC were produced, but few integration methods were used to classify MIBC that reflects the patient’s prognosis. In this study, we constructed an autoencoder based deep learning framework to integrate multi-omics data of MIBC and clustered samples into two different subgroups with significant overall survival difference (P = 8.11 × 10-5). As an independent prognostic factor relative to clinical information, these two subtypes have some significant genomic differences. Remarkably, the subtype of poor prognosis had significant higher frequency of chromosome 3p deletion. Immune decomposition analysis results showed that these two MIBC subtypes had different immune components including macrophages M1, resting NK cells, regulatory T cells, plasma cells, and naïve B cells. Hallmark gene set enrichment analysis was performed to investigate the functional character difference between these two MIBC subtypes, which revealed that activated IL-6/JAK/STAT3 signaling, interferon-alpha response, reactive oxygen species pathway, and unfolded protein response were significantly enriched in upregulated genes of high-risk subtype. We constructed MIBC subtyping models based on multi-omics data and single omics data, respectively, and internal and external validation datasets showed the robustness of the prediction model as well as its ability of prognosis (P < 0.05 in all datasets). Finally, through bioinformatics analysis and immunohistochemistry experiments, we found that KRT7 can be used as a biomarker reflecting MIBC risk.

Summary: Dysregulated immune cell responses have been linked to the severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but the specific viral factors of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) were currently unknown. Herein, we reveal that the Immunoglobulin-like fold ectodomain of the viral protein SARS-CoV-2 ORF7a interacts with high efficiency to CD14+ monocytes in human peripheral blood, compared to pathogenic protein SARS-CoV ORF7a. The crystal structure of SARS-CoV-2 ORF7a at 2.2 Å resolution reveals three remarkable changes on the amphipathic side of the four-stranded β-sheet, implying a potential functional interface of the viral protein. Importantly, SARS-CoV-2 ORF7a coincubation with CD14+ monocytes ex vivo triggered a decrease in HLA-DR/DP/DQ expression levels and upregulated significant production of proinflammatory cytokines, including IL-6, IL-1β, IL-8, and TNF-α. Our work demonstrates that SARS-CoV-2 ORF7a is an immunomodulating factor for immune cell binding and triggers dramatic inflammatory responses, providing promising therapeutic drug targets for pandemic COVID-19.

High-throughput antibody sequencing allows in-depth insights into human antibody repertoires. To investigate the characteristics of antibody repertoires in patients with chronic HBV infection, we performed Illumina sequencing and IMGT/HighV-QUEST analysis of B lymphocytes from healthy adults and the HBV carriers with high or low level of viral replication. The comparative study revealed high levels of similarity between the IgM and IgG repertoires of the HBV carriers and the healthy adults, including the somatic mutations in V regions, the average CDR3 length, and the occurrence of junctional modifications. Nevertheless, the diversity of the unique clones decreased and some clusters of unique clones expanded in the IgM repertoire of chronic HBV carriers (CHB) compared with healthy adults (HH) and inactive HBV carriers (IHB). Such difference in clone diversity and expansion was not observed in the IgG repertoires of the three populations. More shared antibody clones were found between the IgM repertoires of IHB and HH than that found between CHB and HH (7079 clones vs. 2304 clones). Besides, the biased used IGHD genes were IGHD2-2 and IGHD3-3 in CHB library but were IGHD3-10 and IGHD3-22 in IHB and HH library. In contrast, for IgG repertories, the preferred used VDJ genes were similar in all the three populations. These results indicated that low level of serum HBV might not induce significant changes in BCR repertoires, and high level of HBV replication could have more impacts on IgM repertories than IgG repertoires. Taken together, our findings provide a better understanding of the antibody repertoires of HBV chronically infected individuals.

Abstract Background Few studies have investigated the associations between outdoor air pollution and outpatient visits for respiratory diseases (RDs) in general population. Methods We collected daily outpatient data of primary RDs from five hospitals in Jinan during January 2012 and December 2016, as well as daily measurements of air pollutants from the Jinan Environmental Monitoring Center and daily meteorological variables from the China Meteorological Data Sharing Service System. A generalized additive model (GAM) with quasi-Poisson regression was constructed to estimate the associations between daily average concentrations of outdoor air pollutants (PM2.5,PM10, SO2, NO2, CO and O3) and daily outpatient visits of RDs after adjusting for long-time trends, seasonality, the “day of the week” effect, and weather conditions. Subgroup analysis stratified by gender, age group and the type of RDs was conducted. Results A total of 1,373,658 outpatient visits for RDs were identified. Increases of 10 μg/m3 in PM2.5, PM10, NO2, CO and O3 were associated with0.168% (95% CI, 0.072–0.265%), 0.149% (95% CI, 0.082–0.215%), 0.527% (95% CI, 0.211–0.843%), 0.013% (95% CI, 0.003–0.023%), and 0.189% (95% CI, 0.032–0.347%) increases in daily outpatient visits for RDs, respectively. PM2.5 and PM10 showed instant and continuous effects, while NO2, CO and O3 showed delayed effects on outpatient visits for RDs. In stratification analysis, PM2.5 and PM10 were associated with acute RDs only. Conclusions Exposure to outdoor air pollutants including PM2.5, PM10, NO2, CO and O3 associated with increased risk of outpatient visits for RDs.

Ground-level ozone (O3) pollution has been widely concerned in the world, particularly in the cities of Asia, including China. Elevated O3 concentrations have potentially influenced growth and nutrient cycling of trees in urban forest. The decomposition characteristics of urban tree litters under O3 exposure are still poorly known. Ginkgo biloba is commonly planted in the cities of northern China and is one of the main tree species in the urban forest of Shenyang, where concentrations of ground-level O3 are very high in summer. Here, we hypothesized that O3 exposure at high concentrations would alter the decomposition rate of urban tree litter. In open-top chambers (OTCs), 5-year-old G. biloba saplings were planted to investigate the impact of elevated O3 concentration (120 ppb) on changes in nutrient contents and decomposition rate of leaf litters. The results showed that elevated O3 concentration significantly increased K content (6.31 ± 0.29 vs 17.93 ± 0.40, P < 0.01) in leaves of G. biloba, significantly decreased the contents of total phenols (2.82 ± 0.93 vs 1.60 ± 0.44, P < 0.05) and soluble sugars (86.51 ± 19.57 vs 53.76 ± 2.40, P < 0.05), but did not significantly alter the contents of C, N, P, lignin and condensed tannins, compared with that in ambient air. Furthermore, percent mass remaining in litterbags after 150 days under ambient air and elevated O3 concentration was 56.0% and 52.8%, respectively. No significant difference between treatments was observed in mass remaining at any sampling date during decomposition. The losses of the nutrients in leaf litters of G. biloba showed significant seasonal differences regardless of O3 treatment. However, we found that elevated O3 concentration slowed down the leaf litter decomposition only at the early decomposition stage, but slightly accelerated the litter decomposition at the late stage (after 120 days). This study provides our understanding of the ecological processes regulating biogeochemical cycles from deciduous tree species in high-O3 urban area.

With the application of Baudier-Lancien-Schlumprecht’s theorem, we finally show that every nonempty bounded closed convex subset of a Banach space has the fixed point property for continuous affine mappings if it uniformly embeds into the Tsirelson space T⁎.

BACKGROUND: Primary graft dysfunction (PGD) is the main cause of early morbidity and mortality after lung transplantation. Previous studies have yielded conflicting results for PGD risk factors. Herein, we carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature to identify recipient-related clinical risk factors associated with PGD development. METHOD: A systematic search of electronic databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane CENTRAL, and Scopus) for studies published from 1970 to 2013 was performed. Cohort, case-control, or cross-sectional studies that examined recipient-related risk factors of PGD were included. The odds ratios (ORs) or mean differences (MDs) were calculated using random-effects models. RESULT: Thirteen studies involving 10042 recipients met final inclusion criteria. From the pooled analyses, female gender (OR 1.38, 95% CI 1.09 to 1.75), African American (OR 1.82, 95%CI 1.36 to 2.45), idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) (OR 1.78, 95% CI 1.49 to 2.13), sarcoidosis (OR 4.25, 95% CI 1.09 to 16.52), primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH) (OR 3.73, 95%CI 2.16 to 6.46), elevated BMI (BMI≥25 kg/m2) (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.26 to 2.64), and use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) (OR 2.29, 95%CI 1.43 to 3.65) were significantly associated with increased risk of PGD. Age, cystic fibrosis, secondary pulmonary hypertension (SPH), intra-operative inhaled nitric oxide (NO), or lung transplant type (single or bilateral) were not significantly associated with PGD development (all P>0.05). Moreover, a nearly 4 fold increased risk of short-term mortality was observed in patients with PGD (OR 3.95, 95% CI 2.80 to 5.57). CONCLUSIONS: Our analysis identified several recipient related risk factors for development of PGD. The identification of higher-risk recipients and further research into the underlying mechanisms may lead to selective therapies aimed at reducing this reperfusion injury.

Accurate electric power demand forecasting plays a key role in electricity markets and power systems. The electric power demand is usually a non-linear problem due to various unknown reasons, which make it difficult to get accurate prediction by traditional methods. The purpose of this paper is to propose a novel hybrid forecasting method for managing and scheduling the electricity power. EEMD-SCGRNN-PSVR, the proposed new method, combines ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD), seasonal adjustment (S), cross validation (C), general regression neural network (GRNN) and support vector regression machine optimized by the particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSVR). The main idea of EEMD-SCGRNN-PSVR is respectively to forecast waveform and trend component that hidden in demand series to substitute directly forecasting original electric demand. EEMD-SCGRNN-PSVR is used to predict the one week ahead half-hour’s electricity demand in two data sets (New South Wales (NSW) and Victorian State (VIC) in Australia). Experimental results show that the new hybrid model outperforms the other three models in terms of forecasting accuracy and model robustness.
