We report absolute high-resolution vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) photoabsorption cross-sections of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) in the photon energy range 5.0-10.8 eV (248-115 nm). The molecular spectrum and electronic structure have been comprehensively investigated together with quantum chemical calculations, providing geometries, bond lengths, vertical excitation energies and oscillator strengths. The major electronic excitations have been assigned to valence and Rydberg transitions which are also accompanied by vibrational excitation assigned to degenerate stretching, v3t2 and degenerate deformation v4t2 modes. The rather complex nuclear dynamics along the degenerate deformation mode, v4t2, have been thoroughly investigated by Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) method. The relevant Jahn-Teller distortion operative within the lowest-lying electronic excited-state is shown here for the first time in order to yield a weak absorption feature at 6.156 eV. Further calculations on the potential energy curves for the singlet excited-states along the C-Cl stretching coordinate show the relevance of efficient C-Cl bond excision.

Phys.1975, 10, 235-259, noting new fragment anions from time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The branching ratios obtained from the negative ions formed in K + SF6 collisions, in a wide energy range from 10.7 up to 213.1 eV in the centre-of-mass frame, show that the main anion is assigned to SF5- and contributing to more than 70% of the total ion yield, followed by the non-dissociated parent anion SF6- and F-. In a recent Letter,1 a set of minor inconsistencies have been found in the main body text and in the Supporting Information files; these are now thoroughly corrected. In the charge transfer process, if we add the potassium ionization energy, OH- is expected at 7.68 eV. The reactions threshold was obtained assuming no excess energy (E#), yet momentum conservation of the dissociating partners may impact on the lighter fragment kinetic energy, thus shifting the energy to a higher value. We note a difference of ~1.1 eV for the energy loss data, which is certainly plausible given the kinetic-energy release distribution of H- in Figure S3. Thus, from the appearance energy (AE) in the H2O energy loss spectrum (Figure 2) at ?E ˜ 8.8 eV, one can obtain the HO-H bond dissociation energy (BDE) by taking the potassium ionization energy and the data from Table S4,2 i.e., D(HO-H) = AE(OH-) - IE(K) + EA(OH) - E#, yielding therefore D(HO-H) = 5.19 ± 0.20 eV which is in good agreement with the values 5.15 eV (118.81 ± 0.07 kcal/ mol)3 and 5.17 eV.4 Following the same approach for D2O, the energy loss spectrum shows a threshold feature at ?E ˜ 9.0 eV. We obtain for the first time the DO-D bond dissociation energy to be D(DO-D) = 5.28 ± 0.20 eV. In D2O the DO-D energy value is slightly higher than the O-D bond dissociation energy (5.176 eV5), which is in agreement with its analogue H2O. Page 5366, right column, last paragraph; “Electronic state spectroscopy...” reads as follows: The electronic state spectroscopy of H2O/D2O was thoroughly discussed from the experimental K+ energy loss spectra obtained, from which the DO-D bond dissociation energy has been obtained for the first time to be 5.28 ± 0.20 eV. ¦ SUPPORTING INFORMATION Enthalpies of formation (?fHg°) in reactions 2a.1-2b.2 and 4a.1-4b.2 are actually enthalpies of reaction (?Hr). Table S2 decimal places for O- and OH- from H2O have been corrected; they now read 12.08 ± 0.20 and 7.80 ± 0.20.

H2O/D2O negative ion time-of-flight mass spectra from electron transfer processes at different collision energies with neutral potassium yield OH-/OD-, O-, and H-/D-. The branching ratios show a relevant energy dependence with an important isotope effect in D2O. Electronic state spectroscopy of water has been further investigated by recording potassium cation energy loss spectra in the forward scattering direction at an impact energy of 205 eV (lab frame), with quantum chemical calculations for the lowest-lying unoccupied molecular orbitals in the presence of a potassium atom supporting most of the experimental findings. The DO-D bond dissociation energy has been determined for the first time to be 5.41 ± 0.10 eV. The collision dynamics revealed the character of the singly excited (1b2-1) molecular orbital and doubly excited states in such K-H2O and K-D2O collisions.

In this study, we present a complete set of electron scattering cross-sections from 1-Methyl-5-Nitroimidazole (1M5NI) molecules for impact energies ranging from 0.1 to 1000 eV. This information is relevant to evaluate the potential role of 1M5NI as a molecular radiosensitizers. The total electron scattering cross-sections (TCS) that we previously measured with a magnetically confined electron transmission apparatus were considered as the reference values for the present analysis. Elastic scattering cross-sections were calculated by means of two different schemes: The Schwinger multichannel (SMC) method for the lower energies (below 15 eV) and the independent atom model-based screening-corrected additivity rule with interferences (IAM-SCARI) for higher energies (above 15 eV). The latter was also applied to calculate the total ionization cross-sections, which were complemented with experimental values of the induced cationic fragmentation by electron impact. Double differential ionization cross-sections were measured with a reaction microscope multi-particle coincidence spectrometer. Using a momentum imaging spectrometer, direct measurements of the anion fragment yields and kinetic energies by the dissociative electron attachment are also presented. Cross-sections for the other inelastic channels were derived with a self-consistent procedure by sampling their values at a given energy to ensure that the sum of the cross-sections of all the scattering processes available at that energy coincides with the corresponding TCS. This cross-section data set is ready to be used for modelling electron-induced radiation damage at the molecular level to biologically relevant media containing 1M5NI as a potential radiosensitizer. Nonetheless, a proper evaluation of its radiosensitizing effects would require further radiobiological experiments.

In this Review, we present a comparative study between electron and positron scattering cross sections from CO2 molecules over a broad impact energy range (0.1-5000 eV). For electron scattering, new total electron scattering cross sections (e-TCS) have been measured with a high resolution magnetically confined electron beam transmission system from 1 to 200 eV. Dissociative electron attachment processes for electron energies from 3 to 52 eV have been analyzed by measuring the relative O- anion production yield. In addition, elastic, inelastic, and total scattering cross section calculations have been carried out in the framework of the Independent Atom Model by using the Screening Corrected Additive Rule, including interference effects (IAM-SCARI). Based on the previous cross section compilation from Itikawa ( J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data, 2002, 31, 749-767) and the present measurements and calculations, an updated recommended e-TCS data set has been used as reference values to obtain a self-consistent integral cross section data set for the elastic and inelastic (vibrational excitation, electronic excitation, and ionization) scattering channels. A similar calculation has been carried out for positrons, which shows important differences between the electron scattering behavior: e.g., more relevance of the target polarization at the lower energies, more efficient excitation of the target at intermediate energies, but a lower total scattering cross section for increasing energies, even at 5000 eV. This result does not agree with the charge independence of the scattering cross section predicted by the first Born approximation (FBA). However, we have shown that the inelastic channels follow the FBA's predictions for energies above 500 eV while the elastic part, due to the different signs of the scattering potential constituent terms, remains lower for positrons even at the maximum impact energy considered here (5000 eV). As in the case of electrons, a self-consistent set of integral positron scattering cross sections, including elastic and inelastic (vibrational excitation, electronic excitation, positronium formation, and ionization) channels is provided. Again, to derive these data, positron scattering total cross sections based on a previous compilation from Brunger et al. ( J. Phys. Chem. Ref. Data, 2017, 46, 023102) and the present calculation have been used as reference values. Data for the main inelastic channels, i.e. direct ionization and positronium formation, derived with this procedure, show excellent agreement with the experimental results available in the literature. Inconsistencies found between different model potential calculations, both for the elastic and inelastic collision processes, suggest that new calculations using more sophisticated methods are required.

The geometrical effect of chlorine atom positions in polyatomic molecules after capturing a low-energy electron is shown to be a prevalent mechanism yielding Cl2-. In this work, we investigated hexachlorobenzene reduction in electron transfer experiments to determine the role of chlorine atom positions around the aromatic ring, and compared our results with those using ortho-, meta- and para-dichlorobenzene molecules. This was achieved by combining gas-phase experiments to determine the reaction threshold by means of mass spectrometry together with quantum chemical calculations. We also observed that Cl2- formation can only occur in 1,2-C6H4Cl2, where the two closest C-Cl bonds are cleaved while the chlorine atoms are brought together within the ring framework due to excess energy dissipation. These results show that a strong coupling between electronic and C-Cl bending motion is responsible for a positional isomeric effect, where molecular recognition is a determining factor in chlorine anion formation.

This novel work reports nimorazole (NIMO) radiosensitizer reduction upon electron transfer in collisions with neutral potassium (K) atoms in the lab frame energy range of 10-400 eV. The negative ions formed in this energy range were time-of-flight mass analyzed and branching ratios were obtained. Assignment of different anions showed that more than 80% was due to the formation of the non-dissociated parent anion NIMO•- at 226 u and nitrogen dioxide anion NO2- at 46 u. The rich fragmentation pattern revealed that significant collision induced the decomposition of the 4-nitroimidazole ring, as well as other complex internal reactions within the temporary negative ion formed after electron transfer to neutral NIMO. Other fragment anions were only responsible for less than 20% of the total ion yield. Additional information on the electronic state spectroscopy of nimorazole was obtained by recording a K+ energy loss spectrum in the forward scattering direction (θ ≈ 0°), allowing us to determine the most accessible electronic states within the temporary negative ion. Quantum chemical calculations on the electronic structure of NIMO in the presence of a potassium atom were performed to help assign the most significant lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals participating in the collision process. Electron transfer was shown to be a relevant process for nimorazole radiosensitisation through efficient and prevalent non-dissociated parent anion formation.

In this study, novel experimental total electron detachment cross sections for O2- collisions with benzene molecules are reported for the impact energy range (10-1000 eV), as measured with a transmission beam apparatus. By analysing the positively charged species produced during the collision events, relative total ionisation cross sections were derived in the incident energy range of 160-900 eV. Relative partial ionisation cross sections for fragments with m/z ≤ 78 u were also given in this energy range. We also confirmed that heavier compounds (m/z > 78 u) formed for impact energies between 550 and 800 eV. In order to further our knowledge about the collision dynamics governing the fragmentation of such heavier molecular compounds, we performed molecular dynamics calculations within the framework of the Density Functional Theory (DFT). These results demonstrated that the fragmentation of these heavier compounds strongly supports the experimental evidence of m/z = 39-42, 50, 60 (u) cations formation, which contributed to the broad local maximum in the total ionisation observed from 550 to 800 eV. This work reveals the reactivity induced by molecular anions colliding with hydrocarbons at high energies, processes that can take place in the interstellar medium under various local conditions.

High-accuracy molecular force field models suited for hot gases and plasmas are not as abundant as those geared toward ambient pressure and temperature conditions. Here, we present an improved version of our previous electron-density based force field model that can now account for polarization effects by adjusting the atomic valence electron contributions to match ab initio calculated Mulliken partial charges. Using a slightly modified version of the Hohenberg–Kohn theorem, we also include an improved theoretical formulation of our model when applied to systems with degenerate ground states. We present two variants of our polarizable model, fitted from ab initio reference data calculated at CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ and CCSD(T)/CEP-31G levels of theory, that both accurately model water dimer interaction energies. Further improvements include the additional interaction components with fictitious non-spherically symmetric, yet atom-centered, electron densities and fitting the exchange and correlation coefficients against analytical expressions. The latter removes all unphysical oscillations that are observed in the previous non-polarizable variant of our force field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Superoxide anions colliding with benzene molecules at impact energies from 200 to 900 eV are reported for the first time to form massive complexes. With the aid of quantum chemistry calculations, we propose a mechanism in which a sudden double ionization of benzene and the subsequent electrostatic attraction between the dication and the anion form a stable covalently bonded C6H6O2+ molecule, that evolves towards the formation of benzene-diol conformers. These findings lend support to a model presenting a new high energy anion-driven chemistry as an alternative way to form complex molecules.

Multiphoton ionization (MPI) of alkyl iodides (RI, R = CnH2n+1, n = 1–4) has been investigated with femtosecond laser pulses centered at 800 and 400 nm along with photoelectron imaging detection. In addition, the ultraviolet (UV)–vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) absorption spectra of gas-phase RIs have been measured in the photon energy range of 5–11 eV using the VUV Fourier transform spectrometer at the VUV DESIRS beamline of the synchrotron SOLEIL facility. The use of high-laser-field strengths in matter–radiation interaction generates highly non-linear phenomena, such as the Stark shift effect, which distorts the potential energy surfaces of molecules by varying both the energy of electronic and rovibrational states and their ionization energies. The Stark shift can then generate resonances between intermediate states and an integer number of laser photons of a given wavelength, which are commonly known as Freeman resonances. Here, we study how the molecular structure of linear and branched alkyl iodides affects the UV–VUV absorption spectrum, the MPI process, and the generation of Freeman resonances. The obtained results reveal a dominant resonance in the experiments at 800 nm, which counter-intuitively appears at the same photoelectron kinetic energy in the whole alkyl iodide series. The ionization pathways of this resonance strongly involve the 6p(2E3/2) Rydberg state with different degrees of vibrational excitation, revealing an energy compensation effect as the R-chain complexity increases. Quantum chemical calculations for the lowest-lying unoccupied molecular orbitals in the presence of a potassium atom are performed to support the experimental findings. Apart from the role of the different resonances participating in the formation of different anions, the role of higher-lying electronic-excited states of Rydberg character are noted.
