Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) affects the occurrence and survival outcome of various malignant disorders. The study aimed to evaluate the survival outcome of head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) patients with or without HBV infection. Methods: This study included patients with HNSCC who visited Taichung Veterans General Hospital from 2007 to 2015. HBV infection was defined by hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) seropositivity. By propensity score matching, we compared survival outcomes, including progression‐free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS), among patients with or without HBV infection. Results: The prevalence of HBV infection in our cohort was 12.3%. Among the 1,015 patients included in the matched analysis, a higher risk of baseline liver cirrhosis (11.3% vs. 3.4%, p < 0.001) and initial hepatic dysfunction (10.8% vs. 5.4%, p = 0.005) rates were observed than those without HBV infection at baseline. The 5‐year OS was 43.1% and 53.2% (p < 0.001) and the 5‐year PFS was 37.4% and 42.3% (p = 0.007) in patients with and without HBV infection, respectively. The incidence of subsequent hepatic dysfunction showed no difference between patients with and without HBV infection (29.6% vs. 26.8%, p = 0.439). Conclusions: Patients with HNSCC and HBV infection were younger and had a higher risk of cirrhosis compared to those without HBV infection. Perennial grass mixtures established on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) lands can be an important source of feedstock for bioenergy production. This study aimed to evaluate management practices for optimizing the quality of bioenergy feedstock and stand persistence of grass‐legume mixtures under diverse environments. A 5‐year field study (2008–2012) was conducted to assess the effects of two harvest timings (at anthesis vs after complete senescence) and three nitrogen (N) rates (0, 56, 112 kg N ha−1) on biomass chemical compositions (i.e., cell wall components, ash, volatiles, total carbon, and N contents) and the feedstock energy potential, examined by the theoretical ethanol yield (TEY) and the total TEY (i.e., the product of biomass yield and TEY, L ha−1), of cool‐season mixtures in Georgia and Missouri and a warm‐season mixture in Kansas. The canonical correlation analysis (CCA) was used to investigate the effect of vegetative species transitions on feedstock quality. Although environmental variations (mainly precipitation) greatly influenced the management effect on chemical compositions, the delayed harvest after senescence generally improved feedstock quality. In particular, the overall cell wall concentrations and TEY of the warm‐season mixtures increased by approximately 7%. Additional N supplies improved the total TEY of both mixtures by ~1.6–4.2 L ha−1 per 1.0 kg N ha−1 input but likely lowered the feedstock quality, particularly for the cool‐season mixture. The cell wall concentrations of cool‐season mixture reduced by approximately 3%–6%. The CCA results indicated that the increased legume compositions (under low N input) likely enhanced lignin but reduced ash concentrations. Recently introduced photoperiod-sensitive (PS) biomass sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) needs to be investigated for their yield potential under different cultivation environments with reasonable nitrogen (N) inputs. The objectives of this study were to (1) evaluate the biomass yield and feedstock quality of four sorghum hybrids with different levels of PS ranging from very PS (VPS) hybrids and to moderate PS (MPS) hybrids, and (2) determine the optimal N inputs (0~168 kg N ha−1) under four environments: combinations of both temperate (Urbana, IL) and subtropical (College Station, TX) regions during 2018 and 2019. Compared to TX, the PS sorghums in central IL showed higher yield potential and steady feedstock production with an extended day length and with less precipitation variability, especially for the VPS hybrids. The mean dry matter (DM) yields of VPS hybrids were 20.5 Mg DM ha−1 and 17.7 Mg DM ha−1 in IL and TX, respectively. The highest N use efficiency occurred at a low N rate of 56 kg N ha−1 by improving approximately 33 kg DM ha−1 per 1.0 kg N ha−1 input. Approximately 70% of the PS sorghum biomass can be utilized for biofuel production, consisting of 58-65% of the cell-wall components and 4-11% of the soluble sugar. This study demonstrated that the rainfed temperate area (e.g., IL) has a great potential for the sustainable cultivation of PS energy sorghum due to their observed high yield potential, stable production, and low N requirements. Open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR) is susceptible to environmental variables which can become sources of errors for gas quantification. In this study, we assessed the effects of water vapour, temperature, path length, and wind speed on quantitative uncertainties of nitrous oxide (N2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2) derived from OP-FTIR spectra. The presence of water vapour in spectra underestimated N2O mole fractions by 3 % and 12 %, respectively, from both lab and field experiments using a classical least squares (CLS) model when the reference and sample spectra were collected at the same temperature (i.e. 30 ∘ C). Differences in temperature between sample and reference spectra also underestimated N2O mole fractions due to temperature broadening and the increased interferences of water vapour in spectra of wet samples. Changes in path length resulted in a non-linear response of spectra and bias (e.g. N2O and CO2 mole fractions were underestimated by 30 % and 7.5 %, respectively, at the optical path of 100 m using CLS models). For N2O quantification, partial least squares (PLS) models were less sensitive to water vapour, temperature, and path length and provided more accurate estimations than CLS. Open-path Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (OP-FTIR) has often been used to measure hazardous or trace gases from hot point sources (e.g. volcano, industrial, or agricultural facilities) but seldom used to measure greenhouse gases (GHGs) from field-scale sources (e.g. agricultural soils). Closed-path mid-IR laser-based N2O , nondispersive-IR CO2 analysers, and OP-FTIR were used to measure concentrations of N2O and CO2 at a maize cropping system during 9–19 June 2014. To measure N2O and CO2 concentrations accurately, we developed a quantitative method of N2O/CO2 analysis that minimized interferences from diurnal changes of humidity and temperature. Two chemometric multivariate models, classical least squares (CLS) and partial least squares (PLS), were developed. This study evaluated various methods to generate the single-beam background spectra and different spectral regions for determining N2O and CO2 concentrations from OP-FTIR spectra. A standard extractive method was used to measure the actual path-averaged concentrations along an OP-FTIR optical path in situ, as a benchmark to assess the feasibilities of these quantitative methods. Within an absolute humidity range of 5000–20 000 ppmv and a temperature range of 10–35 ∘ C, we found that the CLS model underestimated N2O concentrations (bias =-4.9±3.1 %) calculated from OP-FTIR spectra, and the PLS model improved the accuracy of calculated N2O concentrations (bias =1.4±2.3 %). The bias of calculated CO2 concentrations was -1.0±2.8 % using the CLS model. These methods suggested that environmental variables potentially lead to biases in N2O and CO2 estimations from OP-FTIR spectra and may help OP-FTIR users avoid dependency on extractive methods of calibrations. In this paper, a hierarchical prosody model (HPM)-based method for Mandarin spontaneous speech is proposed. First, an HPM is designed for describing relations among acoustic features of utterances, linguistic features of texts, and prosodic tags representing the underlying hierarchical prosodic structures of utterances. Subsequently, a sequential optimization algorithm is employed to train the HPM based on a large conversational speech corpus, the Mandarin Conversational Dialogue Corpus (MCDC), which features orthographic transcriptions and prosodic event annotations. In this unsupervised training method, all utterances of the MCDC are labeled with two types of prosodic tags, namely, break and prosodic states, automatically and simultaneously. After training, the HPM parameters are examined to identify critical prosodic properties of Mandarin spontaneous speech, which are then compared with their counterparts in the read-speech HPM. The prosodic tags on the studied utterances enable mapping of various prosodic events onto the hierarchical prosodic structures of the utterances. Prosodic analyses of some disfluent events are conducted using the prosodic tags affixed to the MCDC. Finally, an application of the HPM to assist in Mandarin spontaneous-speech recognition is discussed. Significant relative error rate reductions of 9.0%, 9.2%, 15.6%, and 7.3% are obtained for base-syllable, character, tone, and word recognition, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights • Cell adhesion and distribution are controlled by the composition of alginate/PCL fibers. • Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are enriched by alginate and composite fibers. • Cells from composite fibers with low ratio of PCL exhibited improved CSC property. Abstract Cancer stem cells (CSCs) are potential platforms to high-throughput screen anti-cancer drugs. However, they are difficult to isolate from cancer cells. Therefore, we proposed to fabricate 3-D scaffolds for CSC enrichment. Alginate is a biocompatible polysaccharide with poor cell adhesion, whereas polycaprolactone (PCL) is relative cell adhesive. These two materials were coelectrospun as composite scaffolds. Cells collected from alginate and composite fibers demonstrated high stemness, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, invasion, drug resistance, and angiogenesis. Interestingly, cells collected from composite fibers with low ratio of PCL were significantly improved their CSC properties compared to those from pure alginate fibers because few PCL fibers spatially separated cell populations to concentrate CSCs. These results suggested that alginate fibers effectively enriched CSCs and composite fibers created an uneven microenvironment to regulate cell morphology and distribution, by which cell-cell interaction was thus manipulated. We prepared two types of thin film, a NiCrMn resistive thin film was prepared using direct current and radio frequency magnetron co-sputtering from Ni 0.6 Cr 0.4 casting alloy and manganese targets. A NiCrMnZr resistive thin film was prepared based on the optimum NiCrMn film composition, which was made using direct current and radio frequency magnetron co-sputtering from NiCrMn casting alloy and zirconium targets. The electrical properties and microstructures of the resistive films under different annealing temperatures were investigated. The results indicated that the NiCr film resistivity can be enhanced by adding manganese. When the annealing temperature was set to 300 °C, the NiCrMn films exhibited a resistivity ~400 μΩ-cm with the smallest temperature coefficient of resistance of −6.6 ppm/°C. For NiCrMnZr films, there are some Ni 7 Zr 2 Nano crystalline phases observed when the annealing temperature was set to 400 °C. However, the NiCrMnZr film annealed at 300 °C still has an amorphous structure by transmission electron microscopy analysis. NiCrMn films with 16.7 at.% Zr exhibited the smallest temperature coefficient of resistance (+53 ppm/°C) with the resistivity ∼510 μΩ-cm after annealing at 300 °C in air. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although traumatic brain injury (TBI) occurs in a very short time, the biological consequence of a TBI, such as Alzheimer's disease, may last a lifetime. To date, effective interventions are not available to improve recovery from a TBI. Herein we aimed to ascertain whether recovery of neurosurgical high-frequency irreversible electroporation (HFIRE) injury in brain tissues can be accelerated by 7,8-dihydroxyflavone (7,8-DHF). The HFIRE injury was induced in the right parietal cortex of 8 adult healthy and neurologically intact male dogs. Two weeks before HFIRE injury, each dog was administered orally with or without 7,8-DHF (30 mg/kg) once daily for consecutive 2 weeks (n = 4 for each group). The values of blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption, brain edema, and cerebral infarction volumes were measured. The concentrations of beta-amyloid, interleukin-1β, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α in the cerebrospinal fluid were measured biochemically. The BBB disruption, brain edema, infarction volumes, and maximal cross-section area caused by HFIRE injury in canine brain were significantly attenuated by 7,8-DHF therapy (P < 0.0001). Additionally, 7,8-DHF significantly reduced the HFIRE-induced cerebral overproduction of beta-amyloid and proinflammatory cytokines in the cerebrospinal fluid (P < 0.0001) in dogs with HFIRE. Recovery of neurosurgical HFIRE injury in canine brain tissues can be accelerated by 7,8-DHT via ameliorating BBB disruption as well as cerebral overproduction of both beta-amyloid and proinflammatory cytokines. Heat stroke is characterized by hyperthermia, systemic inflammation, and multiple organ failure including arterial hypotension. This definition can be fulfilled by a rat model of heat stroke used in the present study. Anesthetized animals were exposed to heat exposure (43 °C for 70 min) and then returned to room temperature (26 °C) for recovery. One hour before heat exposure, an intraperitoneal dose of quercetin (30 mg/kg) or vehicle (normal saline 1 ml/kg) was administered to the experimental groups of rats. Additional injection was administered immediately after the onset of heat stroke. Immediately after the onset of heat stroke. Vehicle-treated rats displayed (i) hyperthermia; (ii) suppressed left ventricular function; (iii) decreased contents of cardiac total antioxiant capacity (e.g., superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase); (iv) increased contents of cardiac oxidative capacity malondialdehyde and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances; (v) increased cardiac levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6; and (vi) decreased cardiac levels of an anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 10. Histopathologic and survival observation provided supportive evidence for biochemical analyses. These heat stroke reactions all can be significantly attenuated by quercetin therapy. Our data suggest that quercetin therapy might improve outcomes of heat stroke in rats by attenuating excessive hyperthermia as well as myocardial injury. Background Mesenchymal stem cell ( MSC) transplantation has been reported to improve neurological function following neural injury. Many physiological and molecular mechanisms involving MSC therapy-related neuroprotection have been identified. Methods A review is presented of articles that pertain to MSC therapy and diverse brain injuries including stroke, neural trauma, and heat stroke, which were identified using an electronic search (e.g., PubMed), emphasize mechanisms of MSC therapy-related neuroprotection. We aim to discuss neuroprotective mechanisms that underlie the beneficial effects of MSCs in treating stroke, neural trauma, and heatstroke. Results MSC therapy is promising as a means of augmenting brain repair. Cell incorporation into the injured tissue is not a prerequisite for the beneficial effects exerted by MSCs. Paracrine signaling is believed to be the most important mediator of MSC therapy in brain injury. The multiple mechanisms of action of MSCs include enhanced angiogenesis and neurogenesis, immunomodulation, and anti-inflammatory effects. Microglia are the first source of the inflammatory cascade during brain injury. Cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6, are significantly produced by microglia in the brain after experimental brain injury. The proinflammatory M1 phenotype of microglia is associated with tissue destruction, whereas the anti-inflammatory M2 phenotype of microglia facilitates repair and regeneration. MSC therapy may improve outcomes of ischemic stroke, neural trauma, and heatstroke by inhibiting the activity of M1 phenotype of microglia but augmenting the activity of M2 phenotype of microglia. Conclusion This review offers a testable platform for targeting microglial-mediated cytokines in clinical trials based upon the rational design of MSC therapy in the future. MSCs that are derived from the placenta provide a great choice for stem cell therapy. Downlink broadcast in LTE-Advanced-(LTE-A) and WiMAX-based relay networks is a crucial service for multimedia delivery. Currently, most research effort goes into devising efficient resource allocation mechanisms to achieve more efficient resource utilization. However, spatial reuse, which is an important technique in improving transmission capacity, has received little attention in the literature. Thus, in this work, we investigate ways of achieving more efficient resource allocation in wireless relay networks via spatial reuse. We first formulate a joint spatial reuse and resource allocation problem as an integer linear programming (ILP) model. We then consider a grouping mechanism in which relay stations (RSs) are grouped together if they do not interfere with each other's transmission signal. RSs in the same group can thus utilize spatial reuse by using the same set of resources to broadcast data. Because of the high computational complexity of the ILP model, we propose a two-phase heuristic solution. In the first phase, the enhanced-resource diminishing principle approach is employed to determine the number of resources required by the base station and a set of selected RSs. In the second phase, a max-coloring algorithm is employed to organize the selected RSs into broadcast groups and then assign the required resources to each group by exploring the maximum advantage of spatial reuse. To investigate the potential treatment evolution and outcome improvement, we retrospectively compared clinical characteristics, therapeutic strategies, treatment responses, and overall survival (OS) in patients diagnosed and treated with lymphoma-associated HLH between 2004–2012 (n = 30) and 2013–2021 (n = 26). Our study showed that the clinical characteristics of lymphoma-associated HLH did not substantially change over the past two decades. However, more patients diagnosed in 2013–2021 were tested for Epstein–Barr virus than those diagnosed in 2004–2012 (69.3% vs. 33.3%; p = 0.021). In addition, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status 3–4 (hazard ratio (HR): 5.38; 95% confidence intervals (CI): 2.49–11.61; p < 0.001) and jaundice (HR: 2.91; 95% CI: 1.37–6.18; p = 0.006) were poor prognostic factors for lymphoma-associated HLH. With a comparable response rate of lymphoma treatment, patients treated in 2013–2021 had a numerically greater median OS than those treated in 2004–2012 (23.6 ± 19.8 vs. 9.7 ± 4.5 months). However, the difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.334). In conclusion, early diagnosis and tailored treatments that balance efficacy and adverse events remain the key to obtaining a better outcome in lymphoma-associated HLH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: The synthesis of Li/Al layered double hydroxide (LDH) within the ternary system of LiOH–Al–H2O was investigated to determine the feasibility of a one-step synthetic process and the optimal yield composition for the process. The dissolution of Al metal in LiOH solutions was spontaneous and resulted in the generation of H2 gas and heat. Pure Li/Al LDH precipitate was obtained when the Al/Li molar ratio was between 0.1 and 2 and was independent of the LiOH concentration. The yield of Li/Al LDH was correlated with the initial amounts of LiOH and Al in the system and inversely correlated to the quantity of water. However, the Al metal could not be completely dissolved if there was not enough water content due to its consumption in the reaction. The optimal yield of Li/Al LDH, as defined by the efficient conversion from Al and LiOH to Li/Al LDH, was obtained with a LiOH concentration=3molkg−1 and an Al/Li molar ratio=2. The reaction mechanism involves the dissolution of the Al metal in LiOH and the formation of aluminate ions in solution. The aluminate ion and the hydrated Li+ ion subsequently form an ion pair, and the polarizing effect of the Li+ on the water in its hydration shell leads to the acid hydrolysis of the aluminate ion and the formation of Li/Al LDH. This study demonstrated a synthetic process for Li/Al LDH with a high anion exchange capacity. This synthetic process will have additional economical and environmental benefits if recycled Al metal can be used in the synthesis and the evolved hydrogen gas and heat from the process can be further utilized. The radio resource allocation problem in wireless networks is a major research issue because the resource is scarce, and it must be shared among multiple network components. In this paper, we consider the resource allocation problem in downlink broadcast services in IEEE 802.16j WiMAX networks, where the objective is to serve as many mobile stations (MSs) as possible with the given resource budget. Solving the problem is not trivial because allocating different amounts of resources to the multihop relay base station (MR-BS) and relay stations (RSs) yields different network topologies and, thus, diverse routing paths from the MR-BS to the MSs. Existing approaches only provide inflexible heuristic resource allocation strategies or solutions based on a limited network scenario. More significantly, they focus on single-level relay networks (i.e., an RS can only relay data for MSs, not for other RSs). However, in practice, RSs can relay traffic from other RSs, and the resource allocation could be more efficient. This motivates us to formalize the problem as a multilevel broadcast receipt maximization (ML-BRM) problem. We show that the problem is NP-complete and propose a multilevel utility-based resource allocation (ML-URA) mechanism to solve the ML-BRM problem. In addition, we present a computation reduction mechanism that reduces the running time of the ML-URA substantially. The performance evaluation via simulations shows that the proposed ML-URA can serve more MSs than existing approaches, and the derived solution is very close to the optimum under different network scenarios and resource budgets. Abstract: We evaluated the effect of plasma hyperosmolality on behavioral thermoregulation in mice, using a new experimental system. The system consisted of Plexiglas box (dimensions: 50×12×19cm) with five computer-controlled Peltier boards (dimensions: 10×10cm) at the bottom. Experiments were conducted in two different settings of the system. An operant behavior setting: each board was first set to 39°C, and the right-end board was changed to 20°C for 1min when a mouse moved to a specific position. A temperature mosaic setting: each board was randomly set to 15°C, 22°C, 28°C, 35°C, or 39°C with a 6-min interval, but each board temperature was different from the others at a given time point. Mice were injected subcutaneous (s.c.) isotonic or hypertonic saline (154mM (IS group) or 2,500mM (HS group), 10ml/kg body wt), and exposed to either setting for 90min. In the operant setting, the HS group showed fewer operant behavior counts than the IS group (11±5 and 25±4 counts, respectively; P<0.05) with greater increase in body temperature (1.6±0.4°C vs. 0.0±0.2°C, respectively; P<0.05). In the mosaic setting, the HS group selected the board temperature of 35°C more frequently than the other temperatures (P<0.05) with the same increase in body temperature. These results may suggest that plasma hyperosmolality modulates behavioral thermoregulatory response to heat and induce regulated hyperthermia. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The quality of ultrasonic images is usually influenced by speckle noises and the temporal decorrelation of the speckle patterns. Most traditional motion estimation algorithms are not suitable for speckle tracking in medical ultrasonic images which usually have a low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). This paper proposes a new motion estimation algorithm that is designed for assessing the dense velocity fields of soft tissue motion in a sequence of ultrasonic B-mode images. We design a hierarchical maximum a posteriori estimator together with an adaptive feature weighted mechanism to estimate the motion field from an ultrasonic image sequence. The proposed method was compared with several existing motion estimation methods via a series of experiments with synthetic speckle image sequences. Performance was also tested on in vivo ultrasonic images. The experimental results show that motion can be assessed with better accuracy than other methods for synthetic speckle images and a good correspondence with clinicians’ observations has also been achieved for clinical ultrasonic images. Informed by Kaplan's general theory of deviant behavior it was hypothesized that adolescents characterized by deviant identities who developed negative self-feelings would decrease deviant behavior over time if the youths were bonded to the conventional social order but not if the youths were not bonded to the conventional social order. For adolescents not characterized by deviant identities, the development of negative self-feelings would increase deviant behavior over time regardless of the level of conventional social bonding. The hypotheses were explored using data from youth ( n =1019) tested during early adolescence and re-tested 3 years later. Ordinary least square regression models estimated the effects of negative self-feelings on later deviant behaviors controlling for earlier deviant behavior, gender, race/ethnicity, and father's education. The model was estimated separately for each of four subgroups: deviant identity/high social bonding; deviant identity/low social bonding; non-deviant identity/high social bonding; and non-deviant identity/low social bonding. As hypothesized, negative self-feelings anticipated significant decreases in deviant behavior for the deviant identity/high social bonding group, but were unrelated to deviant behavior in the deviant identity/low social bonding group; and negative self-feelings anticipated increased deviant behavior in the two non-deviant identity groups regardless of the level of social bonding. Informed by a general theory of deviant behavior, it was hypothesized that the positive effect of negative self-feelings on later deviant behavior would be observed only for youth who are not characterized by a deviant identity. Data from a panel of youths tested during early adolescence and retested 3 years later (N = 1,041) were used to estimate structural equations models. As hypothesized, for youths without a deviant identity, negative self-feelings had both direct and indirect (via contemporary deviant behavior) positive effects on later deviant behavior. For youths characterized by deviant identities, however, no overall effect of negative self-feelings on deviant behavior was observed due to the operation of countervailing effects. Nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from agricultural soil are substantially influenced by nitrogen (N) and field management practices. While routinely soil chambers have been used to measure emissions from small plots, measuring field-scale emissions with micrometeorological methods has been limited. This study implemented a backward Lagrangian stochastic (bLS) technique to simultaneously and near-continuously measure N2O emissions from four adjacent fields of approximately 1 ha each. A scanning open-path Fourier-transform infrared spectrometer (OP-FTIR), edge-of-field gas sampling and measurement, locally measured turbulence, and bLS emissions modeling were integrated to measure N2O emissions from four adjacent fields of maize production using different management in 2015. The maize N management treatments consisted of 220 kg NH3-N ha−1 applied either as one application in the fall after harvest or spring before planting or split between fall after harvest and spring before planting. The field preparation treatments evaluated were no-till (NT) and chisel plow (ChP). This study showed that the OP-FTIR plus bLS method had a minimum detection limit (MDL) of ±1.2 µg m−2 s−1 (3σ) for multi-source flux measurements. The average N2O emission of the four treatments ranged from 0.1 to 2.3 µg m−2 s−1 over the study period of 01 May to 11 June after the spring fertilizer application. The management of the full-N rate applied in the fall led to higher N2O emissions than the split-N rates applied in the fall and spring. Based on the same N application, the ChP practice tended to increase N2O emissions compared with NT. Advection of N2O from adjacent fields influenced the estimated emissions; uncertainty (1σ) in emissions was 0.5 ± 0.3 µg m−2 s−1 if the field of interest received a clean measured upwind background air, but increased to 1.1 ± 0.5 µg m−2 s−1 if all upwind sources were advecting N2O over the field of interest. Moreover, higher short-period emission rates (e.g., half-hour) were observed in this study by a factor of 1.5~7 than other micrometeorological studies measuring N2O-N loss from the N-fertilized cereal cropping system. This increment was attributed to the increase in N fertilizer input and soil temperature during the measurement. We concluded that this method could make near-continuous "simultaneous" flux comparisons between treatments, but further studies are needed to address the discrepancies in the presented values with other comparable N2O flux studies. The common plant derived flavonoid exhibits strong anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory activities; however, its effects in heat stroke remain unknown. The study aimed to investigate the cardioprotective effects of myricetin on heat stroke induced acute myocardial injury as well as lethality in rats and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Myocardial injury was induced by subjecting the anesthetized rats to a high ambient temperature of 43 °C for 70 min. An intragastrical dose of myricetin (5−25 mg/kg body weight) was given to rats once per day for one week prior to the start of heat stress. Heat shock protein 72 antibodies was given intraperitoneally to rats 24 h before the start of heat stress. Myocardial injury severity was estimated by determing myocardial damage scores, myocardial injury indicators, myocardial oxidative and inflammatory factors. Western blot analysis was used for cardiac expression of heat shock protein (HSP)72. Significant (P < 0.05) up-regulation of HSP-72 after chronic administration of myricetin coincided with significant (P < 0.05) reduction in hyperthermia, hypotension, cardiac inflammatory and oxidative damage and lethality. Inhibition of HSP-72 showed a significant (P < 0.05) reversal in the cardiaprotection as well as survival. Our results indicate that myricetin diminishes myocardial injury as well as lethality in heat stroke by up-regulating HSP-72 and show promise as a novel prevention therapeutic for heat stroke. Oxytocin (OT) has been reported to have a protective effect in lipopolysaccharide-induced experimental acute lung injury (ALI). However, its role in heat stroke-related ALI has never been investigated. Herein, we aimed to explore the therapeutic effects and potential mechanism of action of OT on heat-induced ALI. Rats were treated with OT 60 min before the start of heat stress (42 °C for 80 min). Twenty minutes after the termination of heat stress, the effects of OT on lung histopathological changes, edema, acute pleurisy and the bronchoalveolar fluid levels of inflammatory cytokines and indicators of ischemia, cellular damage, and oxidative damage were assessed. We also evaluated the influence of OT pretreatment on heat-induced hypotension, hyperthermia, ALI score, and death in a rat model of heat stroke. The results showed that OT significantly reduced heat-induced lung edema, neutrophil infiltration, hemorrhage score, myeloperoxidase activity, ischemia, and the levels of inflammatory and oxidative damage markers in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. The survival assessment confirmed the pathophysiological and biochemical results. An OT receptor antagonist (L-368,899) was administered 10 min before the OT injection to further demonstrate the role of OT in heat-induced ALI. The results showed that OT could not protect against the aforementioned heat stroke responses in rats treated with L-368,899. Interestingly, OT treatment 80 min after the start of heat shock did not affect survival. Background: Owing to the shortage of hematopoietic stem cells from matched sibling donors (MSD) and matched unrelated donors (MUD), the number of patients undergoing haploidentical allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo‐HSCT) has rapidly increased. Despite a comparable overall survival (OS) and leukemia‐free survival using this approach, some evidence suggests that haploidentical allo‐HSCT recipients have a higher incidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, though this has not been clearly established. Methods: This study retrospectively compared the cumulative incidence of CMV DNAemia, 2‐year OS, and leukemia‐free survival rates in acute leukemia patients with MSD (n = 41), MUD (n = 18), and haploidentical donor allografts (n = 21). Results: The cumulative incidences of CMV DNAemia at day 180 in the MSD, MUD, and haploidentical groups were 39.0, 55.6, and 85.7%, respectively (P < 0.000). As less than 50% of patients in the MSD group were detected to have CMV DNAemia, the median time to CMV DNAemia detection in patients allografted with MSD could not be obtained. However, it was 42 and 29 days, respectively, for the MUD and haploidentical groups. Multivariate analysis revealed that haploidentical allo‐HSCT (MSD vs. haploidentical: HR: 0.26; 95% CI: 0.09‐0.78; P = 0.017) and age (HR: 1.03; 95% CI: 1.01‐1.06; P = 0.011) increased CMV infection. Finally, MSD, MUD, and haploidentical allo‐HSCT provided comparable 2‐year OS rates (52.1%, 65.5%, and 65.6%; P = 0.425) and 2‐year leukemia‐free survival rates (67.1%, 68.3%, and 80.7%, P = 0.837). Conclusion: The CMV incidence was higher for haploidentical allo‐HSCT than for MSD and MUD allo‐HSCT; this could be explained by graft‐versus‐host disease prophylaxis by multiple immunosuppressants. Pregnant women are vulnerable to heat stroke reactions caused by high environmental temperatures. Heat intolerance is associated with hypothalamic impairment. Here, we aim to ascertain whether pregnancy causes heat intolerance by inducing hypothalamic impairment in mice. In the heated groups, mice were exposed to whole body heating (WBH; 41.2 °C for 1 h) in an environment-controlled chamber. Then, they were returned to normal room temperature (26 °C) immediately after WBH. In the hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO 2 T) groups, mice were exposed to 100% O 2 at 2.0 atm absolute (ATA) for 4 h immediately post-WBH. Mice that survived after 4 h of WBH were considered survivors. Here, we show that when pregnant mice underwent non-HBO 2 T (21% O 2 at 1.0 ATA for 4 h) after WBH, the survival rate was 4/20, and the core temperature at 4 h post-WBH was 31.2 ± 0.2 °C. Both the survival rate and core temperature of HBO 2 T pregnant mice (10/10 and 35.2 ± 0.3 °C, respectively) were significantly greater than those in non-HBO 2 T pregnant mice. Compared to non-HBO 2 T heated mice, the HBO 2 T heated mice exhibited lower neurological severity scores, reduced hypothalamic neuronal damage, fewer apoptotic cells, reduced multiorgan damage scores, and lower hypothalamic levels of proinflammatory cytokines and nitrogen and oxygen radical species. Compared to non-HBO 2 T heated mice, the HBO 2 T-treated heated mice had significantly higher hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity (evidenced by higher serum levels of both adrenocorticotrophic hormone and corticosterone). In conclusion, pregnancy induces heat intolerance by inducing hypothalamic impairment in mice. Background: Adjuvant chemotherapy is recommended as the standard treatment for patients with stage II/III resected gastric cancer. However, it is unclear whether older patients also benefit from an adjuvant chemotherapy strategy. This study aimed to investigate the clinical impact of adjuvant chemotherapy in older patients with stage II/III gastric cancer. Methods: This retrospective, real-world study analyzed 404 patients with stage II/III gastric cancer visited at our institute between January 2009 and December 2019. The clinical characteristics and outcomes of patients aged 70 years or older who received adjuvant chemotherapy were compared with those who did not receive this type of treatment. Propensity score analysis was performed to mitigate selection bias. Results: Of the 404 patients analyzed, 179 were aged 70 years or older. Fewer older patients received adjuvant chemotherapy than did younger patients (60.9% vs. 94.7%, respectively; P < 0.001). Among patients aged 70 years or older, those who received adjuvant chemotherapy had improved disease-free survival (DFS) (5-year DFS rate, 53.1% vs. 30.4%; P < 0.001) and overall survival (OS) (5-year OS rate, 68.7% vs. 52.1%; P = 0.002) compared to those who did not receive adjuvant chemotherapy. A similar survival benefit was observed in the propensity-matched cohort. Multivariate analysis showed that more advanced stage was associated with poorer OS. Receipt of adjuvant chemotherapy was independently associated with a decreased hazard of death (hazard ratio (HR), 0.37; 95% confidence intervals (CI), 0.20–0.68; P = 0.002). High-mountain sickness is characterized by brain and pulmonary edema and cognitive deficits. The definition can be fulfilled by a rat model of high-altitude exposure (HAE) used in the present study. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO2T) and to determine the underlying mechanisms. Rats were subjected to an HAE (9.7% O2 at 0.47 absolute atmosphere of 6,000 m for 3 days). Immediately after termination of HAE, rats were treated with HBO2T (100% O2 at 2.0 absolute atmosphere for 1 hour per day for 5 consecutive days) or non-HBO2T (21% O2 at 1.0 absolute atmosphere for 1 hour per day for 5 consecutive days). As compared to non-HAE+non-HBO2T controls, the HAE+non-HBO2T rats exhibited brain edema and resulted in cognitive deficits, reduced food and water consumption, body weight loss, increased cerebral inflammation and oxidative stress, and pulmonary edema. HBO2T increased expression of both hippocampus and lung heat shock protein (HSP-70) and also reversed the HAE-induced brain and pulmonary edema, cognitive deficits, reduced food and water consumption, body weight loss, and brain inflammation and oxidative stress. Decreasing the overexpression of HSP-70 in both hippocampus and lung tissues with HSP-70 antibodies significantly attenuated the beneficial effects exerted by HBO2T in HAE rats. Our data provide in vivo evidence that HBO2T works on a remodeling of brain/lung to exert a protective effect against simulated high-mountain sickness via enhancing HSP-70 expression in HAE rats. Abstract: Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the cardioprotective effects of melatonin on heat stroke (HS) induced acute myocardial infarction in rats and to explore the underlying mechanisms. Methods: Myocardial injury was induced by subjecting the anaesthetized rats to a high ambient temperature of 43°C for 70 min. Such a high ambient temperature caused hyperthermia, hypotension and myocardial injury in rats. Rats were treated with melatonin (3 mg/kg) intravenously one hour before and followed by an additional dose immediately after heat stress. Key findings: At the onset of HS, animals displayed myocardial injury evidenced by increased levels of cardiac damage indicators (e.g. total lactate dehydrogenase, cardiac troponin I and creatine kinase‐MB), increased cardiac damage scores and suppressed left ventricular performance. Animals with HS also had increased cardiac oxidative stress evidenced by increased levels of lipid peroxidation (e.g. increased thiobarbituric acid reactive substances) and decreased levels of antioxidant enzymes (e.g. superoxide dismutase, catalase and reduced glutathione) and activated inflammation (e.g. increased levels of interleukin‐6 and tumour necrosis factor‐α). Pretreatment with melatonin significantly reversed the HS‐induced myocardial injury, cardiac oxidative stress and cardiac inflammation. This paper is to explore the relationship between banks’ performance and their nonperforming loans (NPLs). The banks’ performance through a network production process structure with NPLs is developed. With increasing NPLs in recent years, the quality of lending assets is a key significant and influencing factor for banks’ operational risk. The research methodology is to integrate the radial and nonradial measures of efficiency into the network production process framework with NPLs; this study utilizes network epsilon-based measure model to evaluate the banking industry performance. In addition, the key characteristics of the bank industry including those of financial holding companies and privatized government banks are needed to be figured out and to provide insight into what causes imperfectly competitive conditions for some banks. The results demonstrate that the banking sector grew consistently in three aspects of operation: operating performance, profitability performance, and risk management in the last five years of the subject period. These results showed that the overall banking sector was capable of pursuing growth in both operations and profits while accounting for risk management. Background: Palliative chemotherapy is the preferred standard of care for patients with metastatic gastric cancer (mGC). It remains uncertain whether older patients with mGC would benefit from palliative chemotherapy. This study aimed to investigate the clinical impact of palliative chemotherapy in older patients with mGC. Methods: This single-institute, retrospective, and real-world study included 428 patients with mGC between January 2009 and December 2019. Among them, 306 who received palliative chemotherapy were further stratified into 2 groups according to age: ≤70 (n = 236) and >70 (n = 70) years. The clinical demographics, outcomes, and hematologic toxicities of chemotherapy were compared between the 2 groups. Prognostic factors were determined using the Cox proportional hazards model. Results: Of the screened 428 patients, older patients had worse overall survival (OS) than younger patients. Among patients who received chemotherapy (n = 306), patients aged >70 and ⩽70 years had comparable progression-free survival (PFS) and OS. The incidence of severe hematologic toxicity was similar between the 2 groups. The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of 2 or more metastatic sites, elevated carbohydrate antigen 19-9 level, high neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and undergoing palliative gastrectomy were independent prognostic factors for OS. Notably, age >70 years was not a significant factor for poor OS. Conclusions: Older age of >70 years might not be considered an obstacle to administering palliative chemotherapy to patients with mGC. Dasatinib and quercetin (D & Q) have demonstrated promise in improving aged-related pathophysiological dysfunctions in humans and mice. Herein we aimed to ascertain whether the heat stress (HS)-induced cognitive deficits in aged or even young adult male mice can be reduced by D & Q therapy. Before the onset of HS, animals were pre-treated with D & Q or placebo for 3 consecutive days every 2 weeks over a 10-week period. Cognitive function, intestinal barrier permeability, and blood-brain barrier permeability were assessed. Compared to the non-HS young adult male mice, the HS young adult male mice or the aged male mice had significantly lesser extents of the exacerbated stress reactions, intestinal barrier disruption, endotoxemia, systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, blood-brain barrier disruption, hippocampal inflammation and oxidative stress, and cognitive deficits evaluated at 7 days post-HS. All the cognitive deficits and other syndromes that occurred in young adult HS mice or in aged HS mice were significantly attenuated by D & Q therapy (P < 0.01). Compared to the young adult HS mice, the aged HS mice had significantly (P < 0.01) higher severity of cognitive deficits and other related syndromes. First, our data show that aged male mice are more vulnerable to HS-induced cognitive deficits than those of the young adult male mice. Second, we demonstrate that a combination of D and Q therapy attenuates cognitive deficits in heat stressed aged or young adult male mice via broad normalization of the brain-gut-endotoxin axis function. Miscanthus × giganteus (Miscanthus) is a warm-season perennial grass grown for bioenergy feedstock production. Nitrogen (N) fertilizer management is crucial for the sustainability of Miscanthus production. In our two-year study (2018 and 2019), we investigated the role of vegetation indices (VIs) in evaluating N fertilization (0 N, 56 N, 112 N, and 168 N kg ha−1) impacts on Miscanthus biomass yield and stand health. The flight campaigns were conducted early, middle, and late during the summer growing season. Among the VIs, mid-summer growing season NDRE provided the best prediction of fresh biomass (R2 = 0.87 and 0.97) and dry biomass (R2 = 0.89 and 0.97) in 2018 and 2019, respectively. The VIs generally showed that it was possible to distinguish between 0 N and 168 N treatments, but neither 0 N and 56 N kg ha−1 nor 112 N and 168 N kg ha−1 could be separated. The results from this study highlight the importance of moderate application of N (112 kg N ha−1) in improving and maintaining the stand health and biomass yield of Miscanthus over time and suggest that mid-summer growing season VIs, NDRE in particular, can be useful for assessment of Miscanthus stand health and biomass yield. Testicular hyperthermia has been noted in men who work in high ambient temperatures. Scrotal temperatures above the normal range caused germ cell loss in the testes and resulted in male subfertility. In adult male rats, exercising at a higher environmental temperature (36 °C with relative humidity of 50%, 52 min) caused exertional heat stroke (EHS) characterized by scrotal hyperthermia, impaired sperm quality, dysmorphology in testes, prostates and bladders, and erectile dysfunction. Here, we aim to ascertain whether hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning (HBOP: 100% O 2 at 2.0 atm absolute [ATA] for 2 h daily for 14 days consequently before the onset of EHS) is able to prevent the problem of EHS-induced sterility, testes, prostates, and bladders dysmorphology and erectile dysfunction. At the end of exertional heat stress compared to normobaric air (NBA or non-HBOP) rats, the HBOP rats exhibited lower body core temperature (40 °C vs. 43 °C), lower scrotal temperature (34 °C vs. 36 °C), lower neurological severity scores (2.8 vs. 5.8), higher erectile ability, (5984 mmHg-sec vs. 3788 mmHg-sec), higher plasma testosterone (6.8 ng/mL vs. 3.5 ng/mL), lower plasma follicle stimulating hormone (196.3 mIU/mL vs. 513.8 mIU/mL), lower plasma luteinizing hormone (131 IU/L vs. 189 IU/L), lower plasma adrenocorticotropic hormone (5136 pg/mL vs. 6129 pg/mL), lower plasma corticosterone (0.56 ng/mL vs. 1.18 ng/mL), lower sperm loss and lower values of histopathological scores for epididymis, testis, seminal vesicle, prostate, and bladder. Abstract: Aim: 99mTc-HL91 (Prognox, GE-Healthcare) was the first nonnitro-aryl-based radiotracer for evaluating hypoxic fraction in neoplasm, stroke and myocardium infarction regions. However, the high hydrophilicity of 99mTc-HL91 might hamper its penetration into cells. In this study, we prepared a new ligand 4,4,11,11-tetramethyl- 5,10-diazatetradecane- 3,12-dionedioxime (HL91-ET) with higher lipophilicity but structurally similar compared with that of HL91. The chemical and biological characterizations of 99mTc-HL91-ET as a scintigraphic probe for hypoxia were performed with a stroke-bearing mouse model. Materials and Methods: HL91-ET was synthesized and formulated with stannous chloride and buffer to afford kits. After mixing with 99mTc-pertechnetate, 99mTc-HL91-ET can be prepared in high yield and high radiochemical purity (both >96%). The partition coefficient of 99mTc-HL91-ET was determined in n-octanol/PBS system. Cellular uptake assays under normoxic and hypoxic conditions were performed in an oxygen-controlled CO2 incubator. Brain stroke in the mouse model was induced by the electrocautery of the middle cerebral artery. After intravenous injection of 99mTc-HL91-ET into the Balb/c mouse suffering brain stroke, small-animal SPECT images were acquired at designated time points and autoradiography of the brain slides was conducted. Parallel studies of 99mTc-HL91 were also conducted at the same conditions for comparison. Results: The higher partition coefficient of 99mTc-HL91-ET (0.294±0.007) indicated higher lipophlicity compared with that of 99mTc-HL91 (0.089±0.005). The 99mTc-HL91-ET preparation was stable at ambient temperature for 24h. Cellular uptake assay showed that 99mTc-HL91-ET was less selectively retained in hypoxic cells than 99mTc-HL91. The target-to-normal brain ratios derived from the autoradiograms of the brains of stroke mice were 1.31±0.02 and 17.47±0.10 (n=3), respectively, at 2h post injection of 99mTc-HL91-ET and 99mTc-HL91. Conclusions: This study revealed that 99mTc-HL91-ET, though with higher lipophilicity than 99mTc-HL91, did not suggest better specific accumulation in hypoxic cells or tissues than 99mTc-HL91. The uptake mechanism of 99mTc-HL91 was at least not solely by passive diffusion. Lipophilicity should not be the major consideration in designing HL91-derivatives for hypoxia imaging. The association of exertional heat stroke (EHS) and testicular morphological changes affecting sperm quality, as well as the association of EHS and hypothalamic changes affecting sexual behavior, has yet to be elucidated. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of EHS on fertility, erectile function, and testicular morphology in male rats. Animals were exercised at higher room temperature (36 ℃ relative humidity 50%) to induce EHS, characterized by excessive hyperthermia, neurobehavioral deficits, hypothalamic cell damage, systemic inflammation, coagulopathy, and multiple organ injury. In particular, EHS animals had erectile dysfunction (as determined by measuring the changes of intracavernosal pressure and mean arterial pressure in response to electrical stimulation of cavernous nerves). Rats also displayed testicular temperature disruption, poorly differentiated seminiferous tubules, impaired sperm quality, and atrophy of interstitial Leydig cells, Sertoli cells, and peri-tubular cells in the testicular tissues accompanied by no spermatozoa and broken cells with pyknosis in their seminal vesicle and prostatitis. These EHS effects were still observed after 3 days following EHS onset, at least. Our findings provide a greater understanding of the effect of experimentally induced EHS on masculine sexual behavior, fertility, stress hormones, and morphology of both testis and prostate. We aimed to elucidate the role of cortical and hippocampal dendritic spines on neurological deficits associated with hippocampal microgliosis, hippocampal neurogenesis, and neuroinflammation in mice with cortical compact impact (CCI) injury. In the present study, we found that CCI reduced spatial memory mean latency (10 s. vs 50 s) and motor dysfunction (130 s. vs 150 s.) in mice, as determined by Morris water maze and rotarod test, respectively. Golgi staining of cortical pyramidal neurons revealed that, compared to the controls, the CCI group treated with vehicle solution had significantly lower values of dendritic order (or dendritic branch number) (4.0 vs 6.2), total spine length (400 μm vs 620 μm) and spine density (40 spines/μm vs 60 spines/μm), but had significantly higher values of dendritic beading (40 beadings/mm vs 20 beadings/mm). Additionally, Sholl analysis showed that, compared to controls, the CCI + NS group mice had significantly lower values of dendritic intersections (1.0 vs 2.0). Immunofluorescence assay also revealed that, compared to controls, the CCI + NS group mice had significantly higher values of the newly formed hippocampal cells (1250/mm2 vs 1000/mm2) but significantly lower values of dendritic order (2.0 branch # vs 4.2 branch #), total spine length (180 μm vs 320 μm) and intersection (1.0 vs 3.0). The CCI + NS group mice further showed significantly higher numbers of microglia in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus and higher concentrations of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the cerebrospinal fluids. All the CCI-induced spatial memory (40 s) and motor (150 s) dysfunction, deranged dendritic and spine morphology of cortical pyramidal neurons or hippocampal newly formed cells, hippocampal microgliosis, and central neuroinflammation were all significantly reduced by melatonin administration during post-CCI. Simultaneously, melatonin therapy caused an enhancement in the compensatory hippocampal neurogenesis and neurotrophic growth factors (e.g., doublecortin-1) and compensatory central anti-inflammatory cytokines. Our results indicate that melatonin attenuates the spatial memory and motor deficits via the modification of cortical and hippocampal dendritic spine morphology, hippocampal microgliosis and neurogenesis, and neuroinflammation in mice with traumatic brain injury. A self-assembled mesoporous silica sphere templating process was developed to create hierarchical continuous porous coral reef like N-doped carbon nanostructures on stainless steel meshes as bifunctional electrodes for ultrahigh performance lithium ion based energy storage devices. If used as a cathode for LICs, it generated a high specific capacity of 125 mAh g−1 at 0.1 A g−1. The LICs assembled from using the electrode as both the cathode and anode, exhibited a high energy density of 145 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1.4 kW kg−1 and maintained an energy density of 58 Wh kg−1 under an ultrahigh power density of 27.3 kW kg−1, among the top tie of the state-of-the-art LICs. The cycling stability of the LIC was outstanding with a 85% capacity retention after 5000 cycle operations at 5 A g−1. Background: Despite previous evidence for a potent inflammatory response after a traumatic brain injury (TBI), it is unknown whether exercise preconditioning (EP) improves outcomes after a TBI by modulating inflammatory responses.Methods: We performed quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR) to quantify the genes encoding 84 cytokines and chemokines in the peripheral blood and used ELISA to determine both the cerebral and blood levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6). We also performed the chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay to evaluate the extent of nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB) binding to the DNA elements in the IL-6 promoter regions. Also, we adopted the Western blotting assay to measure the cerebral levels of heat shock protein (HSP) 70, synapsin I, and β-actin. Finally, we performed both histoimmunological and behavioral assessment to measure brain injury and neurological deficits, respectively.Results: We first demonstrated that TBI upregulated nine pro-inflammatory and/or neurodegenerative messenger RNAs (mRNAs) in the peripheral blood such as CXCL10, IL-18, IL-16, Cd-70, Mif, Ppbp, Ltd, Tnfrsf 11b, and Faslg. In addition to causing neurological injuries, TBI also upregulated the following 14 anti-inflammatory and/or neuroregenerative mRNAs in the peripheral blood such as Ccl19, Ccl3, Cxcl19, IL-10, IL-22, IL-6, Bmp6, Ccl22, IL-7, Bmp7, Ccl2, Ccl17, IL-1rn, and Gpi. Second, we observed that EP inhibited both neurological injuries and six pro-inflammatory and/or neurodegenerative genes (Cxcl10, IL-18, IL-16, Cd70, Mif, and Faslg) but potentiated four anti-inflammatory and/or neuroregenerative genes (Bmp6, IL-10, IL-22, and IL-6). Prior depletion of cerebral HSP70 with gene silence significantly reversed the beneficial effects of EP in reducing neurological injuries and altered gene profiles after a TBI. A positive Pearson correlation exists between IL-6 and HSP70 in the peripheral blood or in the cerebral levels. In addition, gene silence of cerebral HSP70 significantly reduced the overexpression of NF-κB, IL-6, and synapsin I in the ipsilateral brain regions after an EP in rats.Conclusions: TBI causes neurological deficits associated with stimulating several pro-inflammatory gene profiles but inhibiting several anti-inflammatory gene profiles of cytokines and chemokines. 7,8-Dihydroxyflavone (DHF) mimicks the physiological action of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Since local BDNF delivery to the injured spinal cord enhanced diaphragmatic respiratory function, we aimed to ascertain whether DHF might have similar beneficial effects after Brown-Sequard Syndrome in a rat model of spinal cord lateral hemisection (HX) at the 9th thoracic (T9) vertebral level. Three sets of adult female rats were included: sham+vehicle group, T9HX+vehicle group and T9HX+DHF group. On the day of surgery, HX+DHF group received DHF (5 mg/kg) while HX+vehicle group received vehicle. Neurobehavioral function, morphology of motor neurons innervating the tibialis anterior muscle and the transmission in descending motor pathways were evaluated. Adult female rats received T9 HX had paralysis and loss of proprioception on the same side as the injury and loss of pain and temperature on the opposite side. We found that, in this model of Brown-Sequard syndrome, reduced cord dendritic arbor complexity, reduced cord motoneuron numbers, enlarged cord lesion volumes, reduced motor evoked potentials, and cord astrogliosis and microgliosis were noted after T9HX. All of the above-mentioned disorders showed recovery by Day 28 after surgery. Therapy with DHF significantly accelerated the electrophysiological, histological and functional recovery in these T9HX animals. Our data provide a biological basis for DHF as a neurotherapeutic agent to improve recovery after a Brown-Sequard syndrome. Hyperosmolality in extracellular fluid in humans attenuates autonomic thermoregulation in heat, such as sweating and blood flow in the skin. However, exercise training minimizes the attenuation. The aim of the present study was to clarify the influence of hyperosmolality on thermal perception and to assess the training effect of exercise. Ten sedentary (SED) and 10 endurance-trained (TR) healthy young men were infused with 0.9% (normal saline [NS]) or 3% NaCl (hypertonic saline [HS]) for 120 min on two separate days. After infusion for 20 min, heat stimulus to the skin of the whole body was produced by a gradual increase in hot water-perfused suit temperature (33 °C, 36 °C, and 39 °C), which was first used in the normothermic condition and then in the mild hyperthermic condition (0.5–0.6 °C increase in esophageal temperature) and controlled by immersion of the lower legs in a water bath at 34.5 °C and 42 °C, respectively. Thermal sensation and comfort were rated at the time of each thermal condition. Plasma osmolality increased by ~ 10 mosmL/kg·H 2 O in the HS trial. In the mild hyperthermic condition, increases in sweat rate and cutaneous vascular conductance were lower in the HS than in the NS trial in both the SED and TR groups ( p < 0.05). In the SED group, thermal sensation in the mild hyperthermic condition was lower in the HS than in the NS trial ( p < 0.05); there was no significant difference between the trials in the TR group. We first explore whether aircraft noise (AN) induces cognitive deficit via inducing oxidative damage in multiple vital organs including intestines, hearts and hippocampus tissues. Second, we explore whether the AN-induced cognitive deficits and inflammatory and oxidative damage to multiple organs can be alleviated by Astaxanthin (AX) pretreatment. Cognitive deficits were induced by subjecting the mice to AN 2 h daily for 7 consecutive days. An intragastrical dose of AX emulsifier (at the dose of daily feed intake [6 g] of a mouse three times weekly) was given to mice for consecutive 8 weeks prior to the start of AN. Cognitive functions were evaluated by using passive avoidance apparatus, Y-maze, Morris water maze and novel recognition test. Intestinal permeability was determined by measuring the intestinal clearance of fluorescein-isothiocyante. Evans Blue extravasation assay was used to measure the permeability of blood-brain-barrier. Inflammatory and oxidative damage to multiple organs were determined by measuring several pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress indicators in intestines; hearts and hippocampus. Mice treated with AN displayed exacerbated stress reactions, cognitive deficits, gut barrier hyperpermeability, increased upload of lipopolysaccharide translocation, systemic pro-inflammatory cytokines overproduction, blood-brain-barrier hyperpermeability, hippocampal neuroinflammation and increased levels of oxidative stress indicators in intestine, heart and hippocampus. All of the above-mentioned disorders caused by AN were significantly (P < 0.05) reversed by AX. Our data indicate that AX pretreatment alleviates cognitive deficits in aircraft noised mice by attenuating inflammatory and oxidative damage to intestines, hearts and hippocampal tissues. Objective: We studied the effects of tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) on the fever, increased plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and increased hypothalamic levels of glutamate, hydroxyl radicals and prostaglandin-E (PGE) induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Materials and methods: The microdialysis probes were stereotaxically and chronically implanted into the hypothalamus of rabbit brain for determining extracellular levels of glutamate, hydroxyl radials, and PGE. In addition, both the body core temperature and plasma levels of TNF-α were measured. Results: All the body core temperature, plasma levels of TNF-α, and hypothalamic levels of glutamate, hydroxyl radicals, and PGE were up-graded by an intravenous dose of LPS (2 μg/kg). Pretreatment with intravenous TMP (10-40 mg/kg) or intracerebroventricular TMP (130 μg in 20 μl per animal) 1 h before LPS administration significantly attenuated the LPS-induced fever as well as the increased hypothalamic levels of glutamate, hydroxyl radicals, and PGE. LPS-induced fever could also be attenuated by intravenous or intracerebroventricular TMP 1 h after LPS injection. Conclusion: TMP preconditioning may cause its antipyretic action by reducing plasma levels of TNF-α as well as hypothalamic levels of glutamate, hydroxyl radicals, and PGE in rabbits. Rats place their tails underneath their body trunks when cold (tail-hiding behavior). The aim of the present study was to determine whether this behavior is necessary to maintain body temperature. Male Wistar rats were divided into 'fed' and '42-h fasting' groups. A one-piece tail holder (8.4 cm in length) that prevented the tail-hiding behavior or a three-piece tail holder (2.8 cm in length) that allowed for the tail-hiding behavior was attached to the tails of the rats. The rats were exposed to 27°C for 180 min or to 20°C for 90 min followed by 15°C for 90 min with continuous body temperature and oxygen consumption measurements. Body temperature decreased by −1.0 ± 0.1°C at 15°C only in the rats that prevented tail-hiding behavior of the 42-h fasting group, and oxygen consumption increased at 15°C in all animals. Oxygen consumption was not different between the rats that prevented tail-hiding behavior and the rats that allowed the behavior in the fed and 42-h fasting groups under ambient conditions. To our knowledge, little evidence is available about effects of aircraft noise (AN), a non-chemical stressor, on cognitive function. Again, it is unknown whether or not the heat stress (HS)-induced cognitive deficits can be exacerbated by AN. The adult male mice were assigned to four groups: group 1 mice exposed to non-HS (24–26 °C 2 h daily for 4 consecutive days) and white noise (WN) (2 h daily for 4 consecutive days), group 2 mice exposed to WN and HS (32–34 °C 2 h daily for 4 consecutive days), group 3 mice exposed to AN and non-HS (2 h daily for 4 consecutive days) and group 4 mice exposed to AN and HS (2 h daily for consecutive 4 days). Cognitive function were determined by passive avoidance, Y-maze, Morris water maze, and novel object recognition tests. Gut barrier and blood-brain-barrier (BBB) permeability, upload of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) translocation, systemic and central inflammation, and stress reactions were examined. Heat stressed mice displayed both increased stress reactions and learning and memory loss. Heat stress also caused gut barrier hyperpermeability, increased upload of LPS translocation, systemic inflammation, BBB disruption and hippocampal neuroinflammation. Aircraft noise stressed mice did not display systemic inflammation but caused gut barrier hyperpermeability, increased upload of LPS translocation, increased stress reactions, BBB disruption, hippocampal neuroinflammation and cognitive deficits. Aircraft noise exposure further exacerbated the heat stress-induced cognitive deficits and its complications. Our data suggest that AN, like HS, causes cognitive impairments via similar mechanisms in male mice.
