We investigated the electronic structure of the enigmatic CeRh$_3$B$_2$ using resonant inelastic scattering and x-ray absorption spectroscopy in combination with $ab$ $initio$ density functional calculations. We find that the Rh 4$d$ states are irrelevant for the high-temperature ferromagnetism and the Kondo effect. We also find that the Ce 4$f$ crystal-field strength is too small to explain the strong reduction of the Ce magnetic moment. The data reveal instead the presence of two different active Ce 4$f$ orbitals, with each coupling selectively to different bands in CeRh$_3$B$_2$. The inter-site hybridization of the |J=5/2,Jz=+/-1/2> crystal-field state and Ce 5$d$ band combined with the intra-site Ce 4$f$-5$d$ exchange creates the strong ferromagnetism, while hybridization between the |J=5/2,Jz=+/-5/2> and the B $sp$ in the $ab$-plane contributes to the Kondo interaction which causes the moment reduction. The search of novel quasi one-dimensional (1D) materials is one of the important aspects in the field of material science. Toroidal moment, the order parameter of ferrotoroidic order, can be generated by a head-to-tail configuration of magnetic moment. It has been theoretically proposed that one-dimensional (1D) dimerized and antiferromagnetic-like spin chain hosts ferrotoroidicity and has the toroidal moment composed of only two antiparallel spins. Here, we report a ferrotoroidic candidate of Ba6Cr2S10 with such a theoretical model of spin chain. The structure consists of unique dimerized face-sharing CrS6 octahedral chains along the c axis. An antiferromagnetic-like ordering at ~10 K breaks both space- and time-reversal symmetries and the magnetic point group of mm'2' allows three ferroic orders in Ba6Cr2S10: (anti)ferromagnetic, ferroelectric and ferrotoroidic orders. Our investigation reveals that Ba6Cr2S10 is a rare ferrotoroidic candidate with quasi 1D spin chain, which can be considered as a starting point for the further exploration of the physics and applications of ferrotoroidicity.

We report the synthesis of a new quasi one-dimensional (1D) iron selenide. Ba9Fe3Se15 was synthesized at high temperature and high pressure of 5.5 GPa and systematically studied via structural, magnetic and transport measurements at ambient and at high-pressures. Ba9Fe3Se15 crystallizes in a monoclinic structure and consists of face-sharing FeSe6 octahedral chains along the c axis. At ambient pressure it exhibits an insulating behavior with a band gap ~460 meV and undergoes a ferrimagnet-like phase transition at 14 K. Under high pressure, a complete metallization occurs at ~29 GPa, which is accompanied by a spin state crossover from high spin (HS) state to low spin (LS) state. The LS appears for pressures P >36 GPa.

The crystal-field ground state wave function of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ has been investigated with linear polarized $M$-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy from 250mK to 250K, thus covering the superconducting ($T_{\text{c}}$=0.6K), the Kondo ($T_{\text{K}}$$\approx$20K) as well as the Curie-Weiss regime. The comparison with full-multiplet calculations shows that the temperature dependence of the experimental linear dichroism is well explained with a $\Gamma_7^{(1)}$ crystal-field ground-state and the thermal population of excited states at around 30meV. The crystal-field scheme does not change throughout the entire temperature range thus making the scenario of orbital switching unlikely. Spectroscopic evidence for the presence of the Ce 4$f^0$ configuration in the ground state is consistent with the possibility for a multi-orbital character of the ground state. We estimate from the Kondo temperature and crystal-field splitting energies that several percents of the higher lying $\Gamma_6$ state and $\Gamma_7^{(2)}$ crystal-field states are mixed into the primarily $\Gamma_7^{(1)}$ ground state. Perovskite-type manganites, which are well-known for their intriguing physical properties such as colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and half metalicity, have been considered as candidate materials for spintronics. However, their ferromagnetic (FM) properties are often suppressed in thin films when the thickness is reduced down to several monolayers (MLs). In order to investigate how the magnetic phases evolve near the paramagnetic (PM)-to-FM phase transition boundary, we have performed temperature-dependent x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) experiments on a La$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$MnO$_3$ (LSMO, $x=0.4$) thin film, whose thickness (8 ML) is close to the boundary between the FM-metallic and the PM-insulating phases. By utilizing the element-selectiveness of XMCD, we have quantitatively estimated the fractions of the PM and superparamagnetic (SPM) phases as well as the FM one as a function of temperature. Room-temperature ferrimagnetism was discovered for the anti-site-disordered perovskite Ca2MnOsO6 with Tc = 305 K. Ca2MnOsO6 crystallizes into an orthorhombic structure with a space group of Pnma, in which Mn and Os share the oxygen-coordinated-octahedral site at an equal ratio without a noticeable ordered arrangement. The material is electrically semiconducting with variable-range-hopping behavior. X-ray absorption spectroscopy confirmed the trivalent state of the Mn and the pentavalent state of the Os. X-ray magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy reveals that the Mn and Os magnetic moments are aligned antiferromagnetically, thereby classifying the material as a ferrimagnet which is in accordance with band structure calculations. It is intriguing that the magnetic signal of the Os is very weak, and that the observed total magnetic moment is primarily due to the Mn. The Tc = 305 K is the second highest in the material category of so-called disordered ferromagnets such as CaRu1-xMnxO3, SrRu1-xCrxO3, and CaIr1-xMnxO3, and hence, may support the development of spintronic oxides with relaxed requirements concerning the anti-site disorder of the magnetic ions.

A new 3d-5d hybridized quadruple perovskite oxide, CaCu3Mn2Ir2O12, was synthesized by high-pressure and high-temperature methods. The Rietveld structure analysis reveals that the compound crystallizes in an AA'3B4O12-type perovskite structure with space group Im-3, where the Ca and Cu are 1:3 ordered at fixed atomic positions. At the B site the 3d Mn and the 5d Ir ions are disorderly distributed due to a rare equal +4 charge states for both of them as determined by X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions among Cu2+, Mn4+, and Ir4+ ions give rise to spin glass behavior, which follows a conventional dynamical slowing down model.

We report the presence of giant spontaneous exchange bias (HSEB) in a hard and soft antiferromagnetic composite of BiFeO3-TbMnO3 (BFO-TMO in 7:3 and 8:2 ratio). The HSEB varies between 5-778Oe, but persists up to room temperature with a maximum near a spin reorientation transition temperature observed from magnetization vs. temperature measurement in Zero-field cooled (ZFC) and Field cooled (FC) modes. Isothermal remnant magnetization measurements at room temperature indicate the presence of an interfacial layer of a 2 dimensional dilute antiferromagnet in a field (2D DAFF). A stable value of the exchange bias has been observed via training effect measurements which signify the role of interfacial exchange coupling in the system. Based on the experimental results we explain the presence of the giant spontaneous exchange bias on the basis of a strong strain-mediated magnetoelectriccoupling induced exchange interaction and the creation of 2D DAFF layer at the interface. Theproperties of this layer are defined by canting and pinning of BFO spins at the interface with TMO due to Fe and Mn interaction. X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) confirms the presence of canted antiferromagnetic ordering of BiFeO3, charge transfer between Mn ions and different magnetically coupled layers which play vital role in getting the exchange bias.

Quaternary Heusler alloys Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Al with varying Cr to Fe ratio $x$ were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The electronic structure and spectroscopic properties were calculated using the full relativistic Korringa-Kohn-Rostocker method with coherent potential approximation to account for the random distribution of Cr and Fe atoms as well as random disorder. Magnetic effects are included by the use of spin dependent potentials in the local spin density approximation. Magnetic circular dichroism in X-ray absorption was measured at the $L_{2,3}$ edges of Co, Fe, and Cr of the pure compounds and the $x=0.4$ alloy in order to determine element specific magnetic moments. Calculations and measurements show an increase of the magnetic moments with increasing iron content. Resonant (560eV - 800eV) soft X-ray as well as high resolution - high energy ($\geq 3.5$keV) hard X-ray photo emission was used to probe the density of the occupied states in Co$_2$Cr$_{0.6}$Fe$_{0.4}$Al., Comment: J.Phys.D_Appl.Phys. accepted

This work reports on structural and magnetic investigations of the Heusler compound Co$_2$FeSi. X-Ray diffraction and M\"o\ss bauer spectrometry indicate an ordered $L2_1$ structure. Magnetic measurements by means of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism and magnetometry revealed that this compound is, currently, the material with the highest magnetic moment ($6 \mu_B$) and Curie-temperature (1100K) in the classes of Heusler compounds as well as half-metallic ferromagnets.

Co$_2$FeSi crystallizes in the ordered L2$_1$ structure as proved by X-ray diffraction and M\"o\ss bauer spectroscopy. The magnetic moment of Co$_2$FeSi was measured to be about $6\mu_B$ at 5K. Magnetic circular dichroism spectra excited by soft X-rays (XMCD) were taken to determine the element specific magnetic moments of Co and Fe. The Curie temperature was measured with different methods to be ($1100\pm20$)K. Doped Heusler compounds Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Al with varying Cr to Fe ratio $x$ were investigated experimentally and theoretically. The electronic structure of the ordered, doped Heusler compound Co$_2$Cr$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$Al ($x=n/4, n=0,1,2,3,4)$ was calculated using different types of band structure calculations. The ordered compounds turned out to be ferromagnetic with small Al magnetic moment being aligned anti-parallel to the 3d transition metal moments. All compounds show a gap around the Fermi-energy in the minority bands. The pure compounds exhibit an indirect minority gap, whereas the ordered, doped compounds exhibit a direct gap. Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) in X-ray absorption spectra was measured at the $L_{2,3}$ edges of Co, Fe, and Cr of the pure compounds and the $x=0.4$ alloy in order to determine element specific magnetic moments. Calculations and measurements show an increase of the magnetic moments with increasing iron content. The experimentally observed reduction of the magnetic moment of Cr can be explained by Co-Cr site-disorder. The presence of the gap in the minority bands of Co$_2$CrAl can be attributed to the occurrence of pure Co$_2$ and mixed CrAl (001)-planes in the $L2_1$ structure. It is retained in structures with different order of the CrAl planes but vanishes in the $X$-structure with alternating CoCr and CoAl planes., Comment: corrected author list

In this work a simple concept was used for a systematic search for new materials with high spin polarization. It is based on two semi-empirical models. Firstly, the Slater-Pauling rule was used for estimation of the magnetic moment. This model is well supported by electronic structure calculations. The second model was found particularly for Co$_2$ based Heusler compounds when comparing their magnetic properties. It turned out that these compounds exhibit seemingly a linear dependence of the Curie temperature as function of the magnetic moment. Stimulated by these models, Co$_2$FeSi was revisited. The compound was investigated in detail concerning its geometrical and magnetic structure by means of X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption and M\"o\ss bauer spectroscopies as well as high and low temperature magnetometry. The measurements revealed that it is, currently, the material with the highest magnetic moment ($6\mu_B$) and Curie-temperature (1100K) in the classes of Heusler compounds as well as half-metallic ferromagnets. The experimental findings are supported by detailed electronic structure calculations.
