9. An implementation of web-based mastery learning system

Abstract

For the learning of consecutive courses, student's learning outcome may be affected by learning performance of previous course. In other words, if student does not learn something well, say integer addition in mathematics, then poor learning performance of following consecutive course, say integer multiplication can be expected. Bloom has advocated the concept of mastery learning in 1968, and claimed that giving sufficient learning time and good quality of instruction, almost every student could learn everything taught by teacher well. In this manner, if student gets mastery at every learning unit, then he (or she) may solve problem stated above. The most important part of mastery learning is remedial learning. In remedial learning, teaching units will be tailored to meet each individual student's need. It will put a lot of burden on teacher if students who need remedial learning are not a few. In this study, a web-based mastery learning system is introduced to make remedial learning processes practical and persuasive. A pilot has been done on an Institute of Technology in Taiwan. The result showed that web-based mastery learning system proposed in this study is acceptable by students. Abstract

Due to the maturing of Internet technology, the adaptive testing can be utilized in the web-based environment and the examinee can take the test anywhere and any time. The purpose of the research is to apply item response theory (IRT), adaptive testing theory and web-service technique to construct an XML format itembank and a system of webbased adaptive testing (WAT) by the framework of three-tiered client server distance testing.

Abstract

Thinking is as important as learning. It is one of important and effective learning approaches by recording and reflecting student's own learning attitude and learning performance and referring to others' learning portfolio daily. Although many of students know this approach, but seldom of them put this approach into action owing to the problem of preserving content of reflection and learning portfolio. In this paper, a networked learning reflection mechanism based on blog service is presented. Students can make their learning reflection and view others' with ease. An experiment was conducted at an Institute of Technology upon system completion. The experimental results show that there is a positive correlation between students' learning performance and attitude of learning reflection. It reveals that students who have better learning performance tend to make more reflection on their learning. More than 80% of students express this mechanism has positive affection on their learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

48. A traveling memory based upon location-based services and social network sites

Abstract

Traveling is a favorite leisure activity. People always take notes, photos, or videos to remember while traveling. But few of them make travel records completely and continuously. One possible reason is that it is difficult to record, in meticulous detail, traveling; another one is that tourists lack proper tools to facilitate collecting and organizing traveling records. The popularity of smart mobile devices provides a convenient approach for organizing travel records. In this paper, a traveling memory (TM), based upon location-based services and social network sites is introduced. It adopts check-in service in Facebook to let travelers easily collect travel information, and then upload to the TM application. With this application, travelers can select, organize, and share their traveling information. Upon completion of system development, the system usability scale approach was adopted to evaluate system usability. The result shows that travelers have favorable responses to the system.
