The copper metaborate CuB2O4 (CBO) has been studied within the parametric space of magnetic field (B) and temperature (T), showing a series of distinct phases, including commensurate and incommensurate magnetic orders, as well as magnetic soliton phases. However, no single study has simultaneously demonstrated all these phases. This work presents the first comprehensive construction of the complex B vs T phase diagram for B = 0-9 T (B perpendicular to the c axis) and T = 0.1-25 K, utilizing thermodynamic probes, magnetic measurements, and neutron scattering on a single batch of CBO crystals. Our findings elucidate new magnetic phases and regimes. First-principles calculations help to gain a deeper and intricate understanding of this complex phase diagram. The emergence of various phases within such a narrow B and T regime is attributed to two primary mechanisms: the delicate competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, and the weak exchange and superexchange interactions within and between the Cu(A) and Cu(B) sublattices. This competition also leads to a magnetically frustrated ground state at absolute zero where the total magnetic entropy release from high to low temperatures is only 0.76Rln2, lower than Rln2 expected for copper spin 1/2. Taking CBO as an example, the present work elucidates the mechanisms underlying the formation of complex magnetic phases.

Using high-resolution extreme ultraviolet resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (EUVRIXS) spectroscopy at Cu M-edge, we observed the doping dependent spectral shifts of inter-orbital (dd) excitations of YBa_2Cu_3O_(7-x) and La_(2-x)Sr_xCuO_4. With increasing hole doping level from undoped to optimally doped superconducting compositions, the leading edge of dd excitations is found to shift towards lower energy loss in a roughly linear trend that is irrespective to the cuprate species. The magnitude of energy shift can be explained by including a 0.15 eV Coulomb attraction between Cu 3d_(x^2-y^2) electrons and the doped holes on the surrounding oxygens in the atomic multiplet calculations. The consistent energy shift between distinct cuprate families suggests that this inter-site Coulomb interaction energy scale is relatively material-independent, and provides an important reference point for understanding charge density wave phenomena in the cuprate phase diagram., Comment: 29 pages; 8 figures. Recent quasi-2D systems with judicious exploitation of the atomic monolayer or few-layer architecture exhibit unprecedented physical properties that challenge the conventional wisdom on the condensed matter physics. Here we show that the infinite layer SrCuO2 (SCO), a topical cuprate Mott insulator in the bulk form, can manifest an unexpected metallic state in the quasi-2D limit when SCO is grown on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. Hard x-ray core-level photoemission spectra demonstrate a definitive Fermi level that resembles the hole doped metal. Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy also reveals features analogous to those of a hole doped Mott insulator. Based on these results, we conclude that the hole doping does not occur at the interfaces between SCO and STO; instead, it comes from the transient layers between the chain type and the planar type structures within the SCO slab. We study the transport of surface electrons on superfluid helium through a microchannel structure in which the charge flow splits into two branches, one flowing straight and one turned at 90 degrees. According to Ohm law, an equal number of charges should flow into each branch. However, when the electrons are dressed by surface excitations (ripplons) to form polaron-like particles with sufficiently large effective mass, all the charge follows the straight path due to momentum conservation. This surface-wave induced transport is analogous to the motion of electrons coupled to surface acoustic waves in semiconductor 2DEGs., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Rare-earth based lasing action in GaN semiconductor at the telecommunication wavelength of 1.5 micron has been demonstrated at room temperature. We have reported the stimulated emission under the above bandgap excitation from Er doped GaN epilayers prepared by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Using the variable stripe technique, the observation of the stimulated emission has been demonstrated through characteristic features of threshold behavior of emission intensity as functions of pump intensity, excitation length, and spectral linewidth narrowing. Using the variable stripe setup, the optical gain up to 75 cm-1 has been obtained in the GaN:Er epilayers. The near infrared lasing from GaN semiconductor opens up new possibilities for extended functionalities and integration capabilities for optoelectronic devices., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Phase separation of metallic and antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating phases in alkaline iron selenides (AxFe2-ySe2) continues to attract intense interest because the relationship between two peculiar features probably is a key to clarifying the pairing mechanism of AxFe2-ySe2 superconductors. Here we report that the 3D visualizations of nano-scale phase separation in (Na0.32K0.68)0.95Fe1.75Se2 single crystals are revealed by hybrid focused-ion-beam scanning electron microscopy and the superconducting paths are fully percolative in 3D. Moreover, the phase-related ultrafast dynamics in (Na0.32K0.68)0.95Fe1.75Se2 is studied by dual-color pump-probe spectroscopy. The anomalous changes in the electron and acoustic phonon components of transient reflectivity change ({\Delta}R/R) identify two characteristic temperatures T*~100 K (the onset temperature of coupling between nano-metallic and AFM phases) and TH~230 K (the onset temperature of metallic-interface-phase). An energy-transfer channel between the nano-metallic and AFM phases is inferred. We present transport measurements in a quasi-1D system of surface electrons on liquid helium confined in a 101-$\mu$m long and 5-$\mu$m wide microchannel where an electrostatic potential with periodicity of $1$-$\mu$m along the channel is introduced. In particular, we investigate the influence of such a potential on the nonlinear transport of quasi-1D Wigner Solid (WS) by varying the amplitude of the periodic potential in a wide range. At zero and small values of amplitude, quasi-1D WS in microchannel shows expected features such as the Bragg-Cherenkov scattering of ripplons and reentrant melting. As the amplitude of potential increases, the above features are strongly suppressed. This behavior suggests loss of the long-range positional order in the electron system, which is reminiscent of the re-entrant melting behaviour due to the lateral confinement of WS in the channel.

We present a new study of the nonlinear transport of a two-dimensional electron crystal on the surface of liquid helium confined in a 10 micrometer-wide channel in which the effective length of the crystal can be varied from 10 to 215 micrometers. At low driving voltages, the moving electron crystal is strongly coupled to deformation of the liquid surface arising from resonant excitation of surface capillary waves, ripplons, while at higher driving voltages the crystal decouples from the deformation. We find strong dependence of the decoupling threshold of the driving electric field acting on the electrons, on the size of the crystal. In particular, the threshold electric field significantly decreases when the length of the crystal becomes shorter than 25 micrometers. We explain this effect as arising from weakening of surface deformations due to radiative loss of resonantly-excited ripplons from an electron crystal of finite size, and we account for the observed effect using an instructive analytical model., Comment: 5 figures

V2O3 famously features all four combinations of paramagnetic vs antiferromagnetic, and metallic vs insulating states of matter in response to %-level doping, pressure in the GPa range, and temperature below 300 K. Using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations of magnetic interactions, we have mapped and analyzed the inelastic magnetic neutron scattering cross section over a wide range of energy and momentum transfer in the chromium stabilized antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic insulating phases (AFI & PI). Our results reveal an important magnetic frustration and degeneracy of the PI phase which is relieved by the rhombohedral to monoclinic transition at $T_N=185$ K due to a significant magneto-elastic coupling. This leads to the recognition that magnetic frustration is an inherent property of the paramagnetic phase in $\rm (V_{1-x}Cr_x)_2O_3$ and plays a key role in suppressing the magnetic long range ordering temperature and exposing a large phase space for the paramagnetic Mott metal-insulator transition to occur., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

Large-scale optoelectronics integration is strongly limited by the lack of efficient light sources, which could be integrated with the silicon complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. Persistent efforts continue to achieve efficient light emission from silicon in the extending the silicon technology into fully integrated optoelectronic circuits. Here, we report the realization of room-temperature stimulated emission in the technologically crucial 1.5 micron wavelength range from Er-doped GaN multiple-quantum wells on silicon and sapphire. Employing the well-acknowledged variable stripe technique, we have demonstrated an optical gain up to 170 cm-1 in the multiple-quantum well structures. The observation of the stimulated emission is accompanied by the characteristic threshold behavior of emission intensity as a function of pump fluence, spectral linewidth narrowing and excitation length. The demonstration of room-temperature lasing at the minimum loss window of optical fibers and in the eye-safe wavelength region of 1.5 micron are highly sought-after for use in many applications including defense, industrial processing, communication, medicine, spectroscopy and imaging. As the synthesis of Er-doped GaN epitaxial layers on silicon and sapphire has been successfully demonstrated, the results laid the foundation for achieving hybrid GaN-Si lasers providing a new pathway towards full photonic integration for silicon optoelectronics., Comment: 23 pages, 3 figures

We report the quantum efficiency of photoluminescence processes of Er optical centers as well as the thermal quenching mechanism in GaN epilayers prepared by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. High resolution infrared spectroscopy and temperature dependence measurements of photoluminescence intensity from Er ions in GaN under resonant excitation excitations were performed. Data provide a picture of the thermal quenching processes and activation energy levels. By comparing the photoluminescence from Er ions in the epilayer with a reference sample of Er-doped SiO2, we find that the fraction of Er ions that emits photon at 1.54 micron upon a resonant optical excitation is approximately 68%. This result presents a significant step in the realization of GaN:Er epilayers as an optical gain medium at 1.54 micron., Comment: Scientific Reports, 2016

Despite the widespread use of silicon in modern technology, its peculiar thermal expansion is not well-understood. Adapting harmonic phonons to the specific volume at temperature, the quasiharmonic approximation, has become accepted for simulating the thermal expansion, but has given ambiguous interpretations for microscopic mechanisms. To test atomistic mechanisms, we performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments from 100-1500K on a single-crystal of silicon to measure the changes in phonon frequencies. Our state-of-the-art ab initio calculations, which fully account for phonon anharmonicity and nuclear quantum effects, reproduced the measured shifts of individual phonons with temperature, whereas quasiharmonic shifts were mostly of the wrong sign. Surprisingly, the accepted quasiharmonic model was found to predict the thermal expansion owing to a fortuitous cancellation of contributions from individual phonons.

Inelastic neutron scattering at high momentum transfers (i.e. $Q\ge20$ {\AA}) or DINS provides direct observation of the momentum distribution of light atoms, making it a powerful probe for studying single-particle motions in liquids and solids. The quantitative analysis of DINS data requires an accurate knowledge of the instrument resolution function $R_{i}({Q},E)$ at each $Q$ and energy transfer $E$, where the label $i$ indicates whether the resolution was experimentally observed $i={obs}$ or simulated $i=sim$. Here, we describe two independent methods for determining the total resolution function $R_{i}({Q},E)$ of the ARCS neutron instrument at the Spallation Neutron Source, Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The first method uses experimental data from an archetypical system (liquid $^4$He) studied with DINS, which are then numerically deconvoluted using its previously determined intrinsic scattering function to yield $R_{obs}({Q},E)$. The second approach uses accurate Monte Carlo simulations of the ARCS spectrometer, which account for all instrument contributions, coupled to a representative scattering kernel to reproduce the experimentally observed response $S({Q},E)$. Using a delta function as scattering kernel, the simulation yields a resolution function $R_{sim}({Q},E)$ with comparable lineshape and features as $R_{obs}({Q},E)$, but somewhat narrower due to the ideal nature of the model. Using each of these two $R_{i}({Q},E)$ separately, we extract characteristic parameters of liquid $^4$He such as the intrinsic linewidth $\alpha_2$ (which sets the atomic kinetic energy $\langle K\rangle\sim\alpha_2$) in the normal liquid and the Bose-Einstein condensate parameter $n_0$ in the superfluid phase. The extracted $\alpha_2$ values agree well with previous measurements, independently of which $R_i(Q,y)$ is used to analyze the data.

The nematic order (nematicity) is considered one of the essential ingredients to understand the mechanism of Fe-based superconductivity. In most Fe-based superconductors (pnictides), nematic order is reasonably close to the antiferromagnetic order. In FeSe, in contrast, a nematic order emerges below the structure phase transition at T_s = 90 K with no magnetic order. The case of FeSe is of paramount importance to a universal picture of Fe-based superconductors. The polarized ultrafast spectroscopy provides a tool to probe simultaneously the electronic structure and the magnetic interactions through quasiparticle dynamics. Here we show that this approach reveals both the electronic and magnetic nematicity below and, surprisingly, its fluctuations far above Ts to at least 200 K. The quantitative pump-probe data clearly identify a correlation between the topology of the Fermi surface (FS) and the magnetism in all temperature regimes, thus providing profound insight into the driving factors of nematicity in FeSe and the origin of its uniqueness., Comment: Supplementary Information included

Recent developments in high-temperature superconductivity highlight a generic tendency of the cuprates to develop competing electronic (charge) supermodulations. While coupled to the lattice and showing different characteristics in different materials, these supermodulations themselves are generally conceived to be quasi-two-dimensional, residing mainly in individual CuO2 planes, and poorly correlated along the c-axis. Here we observed with resonant elastic x-ray scattering a distinct type of electronic supermodulation in YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films grown epitaxially on La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO). This supermodulation has a periodicity nearly commensurate with four lattice constants in-plane, eight out-of-plane, with long correlation lengths in three dimensions. It sets in far above the superconducting transition temperature and competes with superconductivity below this temperature for electronic states predominantly in the CuO2 plane. High energy vibrational scattering in the binary systems UC and US is measured using time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. A clear set of well-defined peaks equally separated in energy is observed in UC, corresponding to harmonic oscillations of the light C atoms in a cage of heavy U atoms. The scattering is much weaker in US and only a few oscillator peaks are visible. We show how the difference between the materials can be understood by considering the neutron scattering lengths and masses of the lighter atoms. Monte Carlo ray tracing is used to simulate the scattering, with near quantitative agreement with the data in UC, and some differences with US. The possibility of observing anharmonicity and anisotropy in the potentials of the light atoms is investigated in UC. Overall the observed data is well accounted for by considering each light atom as a single atom isotropic quantum harmonic oscillator., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

Doping at the rare-earth site by divalent alkaline-earth ions in perovskite lattice has witnessed a variety of magnetic and electronic orders with spatially correlated charge, spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Here, we report an antisite disorder driven spontaneous exchange bias effect as a result of hole carrier (Sr2+) doping in La2-xSrxCoMnO6 (0 < x < 1) double perovskites. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy have evidenced an increase in disorder with the increase of Sr content up to x = 0.5 and thereby decreases from x = 0.5 to 1. X-ray absorption spectroscopy has revealed that only Co is present in mixed valent Co2+ and Co3+ states with Sr doping to compensate the charge neutrality. Magnetotransport is strongly correlated with the increase of antisite disorder. The antisite disorder at the B-site interrupts the long-range ferromagnetic order by introducing various magnetic interactions and instigates reentrant glassy dynamics, phase separation and canted type antiferromagnetic behavior with the decrease of temperature. This leads to novel magnetic microstructure with unidirectional anisotropy that causes spontaneous exchange bias effect that can be tuned with the amount of antisite disorder., Comment: 22 pages, 9 figs

We report direct evidence of two mechanisms responsible for the excitation of optically active Er3+ ions in GaN epilayers grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. These mechanisms, resonant excitation via the higher-lying inner 4f shell transitions and band-to-band excitation of the semiconductor host, lead to narrow emission lines from isolated and the defect-related Er centers. However, these centers have different photoluminescence spectra, decay dynamics, and excitation cross sections. The isolated Er optical center, which can be excited by either mechanism, has the same decay dynamics, but possesses a much higher cross-section under band-to-band excitation. In contrast, the defect-related Er center can only be excited through band-to-band excitation but has the largest cross-section. These results explain the difficulty in achieving gain in Er doped GaN and indicate new approaches for realization of optical amplification, and possibly lasing, at room temperature.

Studies to date on ferromagnet/d-wave superconductor heterostructures focus mainly on the effects at or near the interfaces while the response of bulk properties to heterostructuring is overlooked. Here we use resonant soft x-ray scattering spectroscopy to reveal a novel c-axis ferromagnetic coupling between the in-plane Cu spins in YBa$_2$ Cu$_3$ O$_{7-x}$ (YBCO) superconductor when it is grown on top of ferromagnetic La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ MnO$_3$ (LCMO) manganite layer. This coupling, present in both normal and superconducting states of YBCO, is sensitive to the interfacial termination such that it is only observed in bilayers with MnO_2but not with La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ interfacial termination. Such contrasting behaviors, we propose, are due to distinct energetic of CuO chain and CuO$_2$ plane at the La$_{0.7}$ Ca$_{0.3}$ and MnO$_2$ terminated interfaces respectively, therefore influencing the transfer of spin-polarized electrons from manganite to cuprate differently. Our findings suggest that the superconducting/ferromagnetic bilayers with proper interfacial engineering can be good candidates for searching the theorized Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) state in cuprates and studying the competing quantum orders in highly correlated electron systems., Comment: Please note the change of the title. We present sharp magnetization jumps and field induced irreversibility in magnetization in multiferroic Y2CoMnO6. Appearance of magnetic relaxation and field sweep rate dependence of magnetization jumps resemble the martensite like scenario and suggests the coexistence of E*-type antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic phases at low temperatures. In Y2CoMnO6, the critical field required for the sharp jump can be increased or decreased depening on the magnitude and direction of the cooling field; this is remarkably different from manganites or other metamagnetic materials where the critical field increases irrespective of the direction of the field cooling. The cooling field dependence on the sharp magnetization jumps has been described by considering exchange pinning mechanism at the interface, like in exchange bias model.

The total spectral weight \textit{S} of the emergent low-energy quasipaticles in high-temperature superconductors is explored by x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In order to examine the applicability of the Hubbard model, regimes that cover from zero doping to overdoping are investigated. In contrast to mean field theory, we found that \textit{S} deviates from linear dependence on the doping level \textit{p}. The slope of \textit{S} versus \textit{p} changes continuously throughout the whole doping range with no sign of saturation up to \textit{p} = 0.23. Therefore, the picture of Zhang-Rice singlet remains intact within the most prominent doping regimes of HTSC's., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

This study shows that a terahertz (THz) wave can be generated from the (001) surface of cleaved Bi$_{\textrm{2}}$Se$_{\textrm{3}}$ and Cu-doped Bi$_{\textrm{2}}$Se$_{\textrm{3}}$ single crystals using 800 nm femtosecond pulses. The generated THz power is strongly dependent on the carrier concentration of the crystals. An examination of the dependence reveals the two-channel free carrier absorption to which Dirac fermions are indispensable. Dirac fermions in Bi$_{\textrm{2}}$Se$_{\textrm{3}}$ are significantly better absorbers of THz radiation than bulk carriers at room temperature. The doping series Eu1-xCaxCoO3-d provides a rather peculiar way to study the spin-state transition in cobalt-based complex oxides since partial substitution of Eu3+ ions by Ca2+ ions does not increase the mean valence state of cobalt but is accompanied by appearance of oxygen vacancies in the ratio d \sim x/2. In the parent compound EuCoO3, the low spin (LS)-high spin (HS) transition takes place at temperatures so high that the chemical decomposition prevents its direct observation. The substitution of Eu3+ for Ca2+ in this system shifts the LS-HS transition to lower temperatures. The energy gap associated with this transition in octahedrally-coordinated Co3+ ions changes from 1940 K in EuCoO3 to 1540 K in Eu0.9Ca0.1CoO2.95 and 1050 K in Eu0.8Ca0.2CoO2.9. Besides, each O2- vacancy reduces the local coordination of two neighboring Co3+ ions from octahedral to pyramidal thereby locally creating magnetically active sites which couple into dimers. These dimers at low temperatures form another gapped magnetic system with very different energy scale, D~3 K, on the background of intrinsically non-magnetic lattice of octahedrally-coordinated low-spin Co3+ ions., Comment: 15 pages

We measure the branching fractions of $B^{0} \to J/\psi \eta^{(}{}'{}^{)}$ decays with the complete Belle data sample of $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The results for the branching fractions are: ${\cal B}(B^{0} \to J/\psi \eta)=(12.3 \pm ^{1.8}_{1.7} \pm 0.7) \times 10^{-6}$ and ${\cal B}(B^{0} \to J/\psi\eta') < 7.4 \times 10^{-6}$ at 90% confidence level. The chromium(II) orthophosphate {\alpha}-Cr3(PO4)2 is a weak ferrimagnet with the Curie temperature TC = 29 K confirmed by a \lambda-type peak in specific heat. Dominant antiferromagnetic interactions in this system are characterized by the Weiss temperature {\Theta} = - 96 K, indicating an intermediate frustration ratio |{\Theta}|/TC ~ 3. In its magnetically ordered states {\alpha}-Cr3(PO4)2 exhibits a remarkable sequence of temperature-induced magnetization reversals sensitive to the protocol of measurements, i.e. either field-cooled or zero-field-cooled regimes. The reduction of the effective magnetic moment 4.5 {\mu}B/Cr2+, as compared to the spin-only moment 4.9 {\mu}B/Cr2+, cannot be ascribed to the occurence of the low-spin state in any crystallographic site of the Jahn-Teller active 3d4 Cr2+ ions. X-ray absorption spectra at the K-edge indicate divalent chromium and unravel the high-spin state of these ions at the L2,3-edges. Weak ferrimagnetism and multiple magnetization reversal phenomena seen in this compound could be ascribed to incomplete cancellation and distortion of partial spontaneous magnetization functions of Cr2+ in its six crystallographically inequivalent positions., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures

Quasiparticle dynamics of FeSe single crystals revealed by dual-color transient reflectivity measurements ({\Delta}R/R) provides unprecedented information on Fe-based superconductors. The amplitude of fast component in {\Delta}R/R clearly tells a competing scenario between spin fluctuations and superconductivity. Together with the transport measurements, the relaxation time analysis further exhibits anomalous changes at 90 K and 230 K. The former manifests a structure phase transition as well as the associated phonon softening. The latter suggests a previously overlooked phase transition or crossover in FeSe. The electron-phonon coupling constant {\lambda} is found to be 0.16, identical to the value of theoretical calculations. The comprehensive low-temperature specific heat C(T) data identify both an isotropic s-wave and an extended s-wave order parameters coexisting in a superconducting single crystal FeSe with Tc=8.11 K. The isotropic gap {\Delta}0=1.33 meV on the hole Fermi sheets and the extended s-wave gap {\Delta}={\Delta}e(1+\alpha*cos2_theta) with {\Delta}e=1.13 meV and \alpha=0.78 on the electron Fermi sheets. The extended s-wave is rather anisotropic but the low energy quasiparticle excitations demonstrate no sign of the accidental nodes. The coefficient \gamma(H) manifesting the quasiparticle contribution to C is a non-linear function of the applied magnetic field H in the mixed state in accord with the anisotropic multi-order parameters., Comment: 4 figures, 2 tables. We report on Gd ion implantation and magnetic characterization of GaN films on sapphire substrates and of bare sapphire and Si substrates to shed light on the mechanism underlying the induced magnetism upon Gd ion implantation. For all three hosts, giant magnetic moments per Gd ion were observed at temperatures of 5 through 300 K. The maximum moment per Gd in GaN was 1800 mu_B, while the moments in Gd-implanted Si and sapphire were only slightly smaller. The apparent induced ferromagnetic response was found to be metastable, disappearing after on the order of 50 days at room temperature, except for the implanted sapphire. {\ss}-pyrochore KOs2O6, which shows superconductivity below ~ 9.7K, has been converted into KxOs2O6 (x < 2/3 - 1/2) electrochemically to show spin glass-like behavior below ~ 6.1K. Room temperature sample surface potential versus charge transfer scan indicates that there are at least two two-phase regions for x between 1 and 0.5. Rattling model of superconductivity for the title compound has been examined using electrochemical potassium de-intercalation. The significant reduction of superconducting volume fraction due to minor potassium reduction suggests the importance of defect and phase coherence in the rattling model. The comprehensive study of the temperature dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals a dynamical spectral weight $\alpha$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO). Large spectral weight changes for both the Upper Hubbard band and the Zhang-Rice band due to dynamics of holes are experimentally found in the underdoped regime. A large value of $\alpha \geq 0.3$ is indispensable to describing XAS of YBCO with the conservation of states. The value of $\alpha$ is linearly proportional to the pseudogap temperature in the underdoped regime, but becomes smaller as the doping level goes to the undoped limit. A complete phase diagram of Zn substituted quantum quasi-two-dimensional helimagnet LiCu2O2 has been presented. Helical ordering transition temperature (T_h) of the original LiCu2O2 follows finite size scaling for less than ~ 5.5% Zn substitution, which implies the existence of finite helimagnetic domains with domain boundaries formed with nearly isolated spins. Higher Zn substitution > 5.5% quenches the long-range helical ordering and introduces an intriguing Zn level dependent magnetic phase transition with slight thermal hysteresis and a universal quadratic field dependence for T_c (Zn > 0.055,H). The magnetic coupling constants of nearest-neighbor (nn) J1 and next-nearest-neighbor (nnn) J2 (alpha=J2/J1) are extracted from high temperature series expansion (HTSE) fitting and N=16 finite chain exact diagonalization simulation. We have also provided evidence of direct correlation between long-range helical spin ordering and the magnitude of electric polarization in this spin driven multiferroic material.

Colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) and electroresistance (CER) induced by the electric field in spinel multiferroic CdCr2S4 are reported. It is found that a metal-insulator transition (MIT) in CdCr2S4 is triggered by the electrical field. In magnetic fields, the resistivity of CdCr2S4 responds similarly to that of CMR manganites. Combing previous reports, these findings make CdCr2S4 the unique compound to possess all four properties of the colossal magnetocapacitive (CMC), colossal electrocapacitive (CEC), CER, and CMR. Phase diagram of Na$_x$CoO$_2$ (x $\gtrsim$ 0.71) has been reinvestigated using electrochemically fine tuned single crystals. Both phase separation and staging phenomena as a result of sodium multi-vacancy cluster ordering have been found. Phase separation phenomenon is observed in the narrow ranges of 0.76 $\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 0.82 and 0.83 $\lesssim$ x $\lesssim$ 0.86. While x = 0.820 shows A-type antiferromagnetic (A-AF) ordering below 22K, x = 0.833 is confirmed to have a magnetic ground state of A-AF ordering below $\sim$8K and is only reachable through slow cooling. In addition, x = 0.859 is found to be responsible for the highest A-AF transition temperature at about 29K. Staging model based on ordered stacking of multi-vacancy layers is proposed to explain the hysteretic behavior and A-AF correlation length for x $\sim$ 0.82-0.86., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures, to be published in PRB
