Abstract

We demonstrate memory devices based on proton doping and re-distribution in perovskite nickelates (RNiO3, {R=Sm,Nd}) that undergo filling-controlled Mott transition. Switching speeds as high as 30 ns in two-terminal devices patterned by electron-beam lithography is observed. The state switching speed reported here are 300X greater than what has been noted with proton-driven resistance switching to date. The ionic-electronic correlated oxide memory devices also exhibit multi-state non-volatile switching. The results are of relevance to use of quantum materials in emerging memory and neuromorphic computing., Comment: 4 figures

34. The Essential Role of OmpR in Acidithiobacillus caldus Adapting to the High Osmolarity and Its Regulation on the Tetrathionate-Metabolic Pathway.

Abstract

Acidithiobacillus spp. are prevalent in acid mine drainage, and they have been widely used in biomining for extracting nonferrous metals from ores. The osmotic stress generated by elevated concentrations of inorganic ions is a severe challenge for the growth of Acidithiobacillus spp. in the bioleaching process; however, the adaptation mechanism of these bacteria to high osmotic pressure remains unclear. In this study, bioinformatics analysis indicated that the osmotic stress response two-component system EnvZ-OmpR is widely distributed in Acidithiobacillus spp., while OmpRs from Acidithiobacillus spp. exhibited a far more evolutionary relationship with the well-studied OmpRs in E. coli and Salmonella typhimurium. The growth measurement of an Acidithiobacillus caldus (A. caldus) ompR-knockout strain demonstrated that OmpR is essential in the adaptation of this bacterium to high osmotic stress. The overall impact of OmpR on the various metabolic and regulatory systems of A. caldus was revealed by transcriptome analysis. The OmpR binding sequences of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were predicted, and the OmpR box motif in A. caldus was analysed. The direct and negative regulation of EnvZ-OmpR on the tetrathionate-metabolic (tetH) cluster in A. caldus was discovered for the first time, and a co-regulation mode mediated by EnvZ-OmpR and RsrS-RsrR for the tetrathionate intermediate thiosulfate-oxidizing (S4I) pathway in this microorganism was proposed. This study reveals that EnvZ-OmpR is an indispensable regulatory system for the ability of A. caldus to cope with high osmotic stress and the significance of EnvZ-OmpR on the regulation of sulfur metabolism in A. caldus adapting to the high-salt environment. 45. Incidence, causes and risk factors of vision loss in rural Southern China: 6-year follow-up of the Yangxi Eye Study

Abstract

PurposeTo report the 6-year incidence, causes and risk factors for vision loss (visual impairment (VI) and blindness), among elderly adults in rural southern China.MethodsPopulation-based, cohort study. Initiated in 2014, the study recruited participants aged 50 and older using random cluster sampling from Yangxi County. All eligible participants were invited to attend interviews and comprehensive eye examinations at the 6-year follow-up between November 2020 and March 2021. The WHO categories of vision loss were used to define incident cases of VI (3/60≤VA <6/12), moderate-to-severe VI (MSVI) (3/60≤VA<6/18) and blindness (VA <3/60) in the better-seeing eye.ResultsAmong the 5825 baseline participants, 3187 (64.4%) of 4946 surviving subjects participated in the 6-year follow-up. Based on presenting and best-corrected VA, respectively, the crude incidence rate of blindness was 0.8% (95% CI 0.5% to 1.1%) vs 0.3% (95% CI 0.1% to 0.5%), for MSVI 6.7% (95% CI 5.7% to 7.6%) vs 4.6% (95% CI 3.8% to 5.4%) and for any VI 16.1% (95% CI 14.5% to 17.6%) vs 12.9% (95% CI 11.6% to 14.1%). Cataract (48.3%) and refractive errors (44.4%) were the most common causes of vision loss. Factors significantly associated with greater incident vision loss were older age, female sex, less education, living alone and longer axial length (all p<0.05).ConclusionsSubstantial work is still required to reduce avoidable vision loss in rural China. Screening outreach and efforts to improve awareness which target the poorer and less educated are urgently needed to reduce the growing unmet need for eye care due to ageing.

Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the expression of CD146 and its role in proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). Methods: Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay was performed to analyse the expression and relationship of sCD146, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), sVEGFR1 and sVEGFR2 in vitreous specimens from PDR and idiopathic epiretinal membranes (IERM) or idiopathic macular hole patients. The location of CD146 in ERMs was detected by immunofluorescence. The oxygen‐induced retinopathy (OIR) mice model was established and the adeno‐associated virus expressing a shRNA of CD146 (AAV1‐shCD146‐GFP) was administered via intravitreal injection. The effect of AAV1‐shCD146‐GFP was explored by immunofluorescence, Western blot and quantitative real‐time PCR. Results: The levels of sCD146 in vitreous specimens from PDR patients and CD146 in retinas from OIR mice were significantly increased. Immunofluorescence showed that CD146 was co‐located with CD31, VEGF, VEGFR1 and VEGFR2, respectively. Intravitreal injection of AAV1‐shCD146‐GFP could dramatically reduce the formation of neovascularization and non‐perfusion area by inhibiting VEGFR2 phosphorylation. Conclusion: Our results indicated that CD146 was involved in the development of retinal neovascularization via VEGFR2 pathway. Anti‐CD146 may be an innovative or adjuvant therapy, which provides a new direction for the treatment of PDR and other ocular neovascular diseases. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
